Osprey Men at Arms #95

The Boxer Rebellion

Rate this book
In the year 1900, an unprecedented co-operation occurred between the eight major military powers of the world. For more than a year military and naval personnel from Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia and the United States fought together against a common enemy. That enemy was a society whose goal was the extermination of all 'foreign devils' in China – the I Ho Ch'uan, or Righteous Harmonious Fists, better known to the West as the Boxers. This engaging account, packed with original photographs and full colour artwork, tells the story of this unique occurrence in military history.

"In the year 1900, an unprecedented alliance occurred between the eight major military powers of the world. Never before, and never since, has there been such an alliance. For more than a year military and naval personnel from Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United States fought together against a common enemy. That common enemy was a society whose goal was the extermination of all 'foreign devils' in China - the Boxers."

That paragraph pretty much says it all, and if one were to watch the old American film '55 Days at Peking' one could get basically the same story, with the usual Hollywood embellishments, of course!

This rather short book is typical of the Osprey 'Man-at-Arms' series. It gives you as much information as can be squeezed between the covers of a 40 page book. But don't let that number fool you. There is a lot of information here. Actually, it is a little of everything. What I enjoy the most are the illustrations and the full color renderings that the commissioned artist supplies to support the text. By the way, sometimes you can buy the originals from the artist!

This series of books, while probably intended for history buffs, wargamers, and reenactor's, will complement any collection of books on a historic period, much like the secret spice added to your favorite dish.

These books are not always cheap and are very much sought after. Some popular ones have been reprinted almost every other year since their first publication. Others can be bought on Amazon for maybe $5 US used or over $1000 new. How much does that come out to per page? A lot!
