I live in Oklahoma, but grew up in Laramie, Wyoming. My first book, "Mask of the Wizard," was published in 1985 when I was in college, and is followed by "Veil of Shadow" and "The Hidden Temple." These are adventure fantasies, sword and sorcery-style. My second fantasy trilogy, "The Winged Assassin" series, was written under the influence of the Arabian Nights, Mary Renault's books, Michael Moorcook, and my love for ancient history. All six books came out when I was in my twenties. Raising two kids, teaching college, and lots of community theater happened after that! More recently, "The Wendigo Border" by Catherine Montrose came out in 1995, a contemporary dark fantasy set in Laramie. I'm writing a new epic trilogy and a young adult series currently, and hope to see them in print in the next few years.

Much of what I have said about the Winged Assassin could be repeated here. Plotting is fine and pace good but Ms Cooke's writing is obnoxiously dull, her characters sadly lacking and many points could have been developed much better.

This second volume of the trilogy, though, shows a little more care: the main character is better rounded and I managed to find him nearly endearing; the author seems also to decide that he is homosexual, after all, and she pays a little more attention to his love for Sasha.

A trilogy to pick up only if you are interested in gay-themed fantasy fiction and you find the three volumes in some second hand book store for a very low price.

Nothing earth-shattering here, as fantasies go, but I enjoyed it a lot. The situation the main character is in, with loyalties to three different countries when he just wants to live his life and go his own way, is a nicely constructed dilemma.
