Christmas Gifts

Rate this book
CHRISTMAS GIFTS brings together three previously published and long out-of-print novellas, each on the theme of Christmas gifts that will last forever because the gift, in essence, is love. In "The Best Christmas Ever" a boisterous house party is in progress and all the children when asked are eager to tell what they want for Christmas. But one man feels sad, for his young child has not spoken since her mother died and he does not know if the gifts he has bought her will be what she really wants. Unknown to him her one fervent wish is for the new mother for Christmas, and when she sees one of the guests she knows who that will be. But the lady concerned has an unhappy history with the child's father. In "The Porcelain Madonna" a gentleman becomes involved with helping an impoverished lady, who thinks of everyone's happiness but her own. However, he has seen her gaze with longing at a porcelain madonna well beyond her means displayed in a shop window. In "The Surprise Party" a man and woman who are antagonistic to each other find themselves landed with the care over Christmas of children who are related to each of them. They quarrel over which of them should undertake the task. It is not a happy situation until the children teach them the true meaning of Christmas and of love and they discover that they can do it together.

THE SURPRISE PARTY.
5 stars. I LOVED this.
60 pages full of love, basically.
I don't know how she does it, but Mary Balogh has to be using some kind of magic to make me fall in love with her MCs and the three little ones in such a short book, giving me ALL THE FEELS.
Did I mention that I loved this?
No? Well, let me tell you. I loved this. So very much.

I usually don't enjoy novellas, because I fail to feel a connection in a story that hasn't even 100 pages - but Mary Balogh is one of the few exceptions. I adore her novellas!

THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER - 4 stars.
Sweet novella, not one of the author's best in my opinion, but nevertheless entertaining and enjoyable.

THE PORCELAIN MADONNA - 4 stars.
Not very realistic, but full of christmas spirit that leads a bitter and cynical earl to love.

THE SURPRISE PARTY - 4,5 stars.
Mary Balogh is a master at short novellas full of feelings. In this one the nieces and the nephew are main characters alongside their aunt and uncle falling in love (again).
Beautiful.

Mary Balogh has sent us all an early Christmas gift this year, with this anthology of three classic novellas. (She has also published a similar anthology, Christmas Miracles.) Actually, as she enters her thirtieth year of writing historical romance, I tend to think that Mary Balogh's mere presence in the world is a sort of gift. I have read about two-thirds of her books and have yet to encounter a stinker. It's very exciting for those of us who prefer ebooks that she has been digitizing many of her out-of-print books.

The three novellas in this collection date back to the 1990s and have long been out-of-print. They are unashamedly sentimental and full of snow, children, sleigh rides, presents, and love. As Ms Balogh recently wrote on her blog:
We expect good things of the Christmas season. We expect peace and goodwill and the warmth and closeness of family celebrating together. We expect love and joy. We expect, in fact, all the elements we look for in a good romance. What better marriage can there be than that between Christmas and romance?

In this blog posting, Ms Balogh also delivered a lesson that other authors of Christmas stories should take to heart:
Perhaps the best thing I learned from the writing of those novellas was that the stories could be far more effective if Christmas was an essential element and the story happened as it did because it was Christmas and not just because by pure chance it occurred late in December.

This lesson, I think, is what makes Balogh's plethora of Christmas novellas so successful. Even readers with Scroogish tendencies (that would be me) can find themselves experiencing the joy of the season.

I haven't said anything about the plots, as the book blurb above does a fine job of previewing each story. My favorite has to be “The Best Christmas Ever,” where a motherless girl picks as her new mother a lady completely unsuitable for her father. And then there's “The Surprise Party,” where the needs of three orphaned children help two people overcome the bitterness they have have felt toward one another for years. But then, I also liked “The Porcelain Madonna,” in which the Earl of Bah Humbug learns about the Christmas spirit from a penniless young woman. Oh, never mind, I can't really pick a favorite. All three are sweet, sentimental, utterly delightful, and guaranteed to deliver the best that Christmas has to offer.

Christmas Gifts and Christmas Miracles are specially priced at US$ 1.99 during the month of December. So why not click on the link above and give yourself a gift.

An enjoyable set of 3 novellas which have long been out of print. One of the things Mary Balogh does so well in her Christmas stories, whether full length novels or short stories, is to incorporate the "spirit of Christmas" almost as if it's a separate character. Unlike so many seasonal stories which perhaps have a bit of snow and sprigs of holly in them, these stories wouldn't work if they were set at any other time of the year.

Yes, maybe they're a little overly sentimental - but if there's no room for sentimentality at Christmas, I don't know when there is.

I love Mary Balogh's short stories, they are always so emotional, and these ones all about Christmas were just lovely. I loved the first two, and the third one I liked very well. A lovely way to get into the spirit of Christmas.

"The Best Christmas Ever"
A young girl who hasn't spoken since witnessing her mother's death by drowning wishes for a new mama for Christmas and just so happens to select her father's first love for that honor. This second chance romance is rather bland, and it's hard to have a strong attachment to the ship when he's so cruel (think Wentworth pre-letter) to her at the outset with no apology to come. It's okay, I guess, but not my kind of romance at all, what with the cheesiness of the child's Christmas wish on top of it all.

"The Porcelain Madonna"
This story feels like A Christmas Carol in a lot of ways, though admittedly missing the ghost aspect. A jaded man is feeling very bah humbug about the holiday until he meets a Pollyanna-ish lady and an incorrigible street urchin. The story's sweet, a bit too sweet for my tastes, but I was amused by the Hallmark Christmas romance feeling to it.

"The Surprise Party"
Of the three stories, I enjoyed this one the most. There's a bit more sass in this second chance romance, though the back story is admittedly not well explained. Still, I like the dynamic between the hero and heroine, and the Christmas romping is quite fun. This is the only story where the heroine isn't rather meek as well, which I appreciate.

What is it about Christmas stories that there are moppets central to all of them? Clearly not my holiday. ;)

Glad to say that my five star rating from Dec 2015 has held up upon re-read. I love these little stories. There are three and each one takes approx a hour 40 min (according to my Kindle) to read. These are true Christmas themed stories, not like some that might mention that it is Christmastime but little else feels like Christmas.

All the stories have a Christmas theme, (well obviously 😁) but aside from that, each one is centered on a child/ children as the focus of the adults in each story.

Story 1 The Best Christmas Ever

Little Anna was just adorable 🥰 she just wants a new mother.
(A second chance trope)

Story 2 The Porcelain Madonna

Charlie is a wonderful charming bridge that helps the couple come together.

Story 3 The Surprise Party

Caroline and her brother and sister are lonely, neglected orphans who need the love of parents.
( A Second chance trope)

Very lovely and satisfying collection of novellas for Christmas! ❤️

Sweet Christmas Stories

This book contains three short stories that were previously published in Signet Regency Christmas anthologies in the 1990s.

THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER -- Edwin Gwent, Viscount Radbrook has a five year old daughter who hasn't spoken in the two years since her mother's death. What she wants most for Christmas is a new mother. She has picked out Emma Milford. A potential romance between Edwin and Emma is complicated because they have a history together -- 9 years ago she rejected Edwin's suit. I liked this short story. The best ones of these are where there is a pre-existing relationship because of the short time period involved. I loved how these two adults interacted with Edwin's daughter and the little girl is incredibly cute. Even though the story was short, I thought the relationship between Edwin and Emma was sweet. Rating: 4 stars.

PORCELAIN MADONNA -- Cynical Darcy Austin, Earl of Kevern is walking down Bond street when he spies a woman looking in a window. When he sees that she is about to be robbed by a young boy, he comes to her aid. Julie Bevan insists that the potential thief be forgiven. Darcy finds himself drawn into the lives of Julie and the young boy despite this determination. The story itself was sweet and the characters were interesting, but the short time period in which these characters know one another made the quick romance a little difficult to accept. Rating: 3 stars.

THE SURPRISE PARTY -- Ursula, Lady Carlyle is a widow who is notified that her brother has died and left three children orphaned. She comes to claim them and encounters Timothy, Viscount Morsey who is the brother of the children's mother. As the two attempt to bring some spirit of Christmas to these children, they unwillingly draw closer. This is complicated by the fact that years ago Ursula and Timothy had been betrothed to one another. This story worked for me because of the existing relationship between these two. I did feel that this would have been a better story if it were longer. I did like the relationship between the characters and the children. I think the highlights of this story are the strong integration of the Christmas theme and the cute children. Rating: 3.5 stars.

No one writes Christmas-themed historical romance quite like Mary Balogh. Her stories are filled with quintessential second chances, healing battered souls and wounded hearts, resolving misunderstandings and overcoming obstacles, which would have been impossible if they didn't happen at Christmas. They never fail to remind me of the things that make it the most wonderful time of the year.

The Best Christmas Ever: a little girl's wish for a new mother reunites her widowed father with his long-lost love. Their youthful attachment had ended badly - the heroine chose duty over their happiness - and the last thing the hero wants it to reopen old wounds. But, of all the women at the house party, his daughter picks the heroine at first sight and refuses to be detached from her side. The emotional upheaval that put the father through was most affecting. I particularly enjoyed the scene, in which the hero and heroine talked about their past and found a way to build a future together.

The Porcelain Madonna: this one should probably come with a trigger warning. Historical romance rarely does justice to the trauma the hero carries within, but this story manages to convey his pain without unnecessary melodrama. And a chance encounter with a raggamuffin and an impoverished gentlewoman, who insists on seeing the best in people, turns his life around. When they join forces to help the boy's family, which had fallen on hard times, the heroine's selfless actions break through the shell of his cynicism, restoring his faith in love and happiness.

The Surprise Party: the hero and heroine would have gotten married if their siblings' elopement didn't break up their engagement. Both carry a grudge and are forced to bury the hatchet to care for their orphaned nieces and nephew. The children play a crucial role in rekindling this romance, giving the hero and heroine an excuse to build a family they were planning when they had fallen in love years ago.

I'm so glad I found this delightful anthology. Each story is the the rekindling of a past love and the coming together of a family with lots of enchanting children. I loved that Ms. Balogh gave children a POV. It turly enriched my reading experience. I highly recommend this book to all who enjoy traditional regency romances. Happy reading!

All of trem were nice. I like how all of them had a perspective from a child. The first one was really cute, to the parenthood point of view, because I did not feel the love from the couple, no ily from any of them and that made me kinda disappointed, but the girl was the cutest.
The second one had everything to be good, all about Christmas magic and second chances, but it was ruined when he said ily and she didn’t (c’mon!), but a good story not considering this part.
The third was awesome. I’d definitely read a hole book just about this one. I’m not a big fan of old couples who have a second shot (I like to get to know the characters from the begging, no past that I don’t know about), but this story was perfect. The couple was so deeply in love and in love with the children that my heart almost melted. This one made the rate of the book go higher.

I’m feeling like Christmas in July lol.

I found all but one of these short stories to be kind of meh. The last one, "Surprise Party" was cute. I've read this author before and really enjoyed her novels. But I think here, with the stories being so short, the characters felt kind of flat. For example the second story was a bit silly, never getting what the female character thinks- and she's so perfect. The male character asks to marry her within two days of meeting her and rediscovering the joy of Christmas. Like, it was like a Hallmark movie ending.

But I started this last year around Christmas and never finished it or could get into it. I kind of had to push myself through this one to be honest. That said it does have a cute premise.

These are three Christmas novellas by Ms Balogh.

Each of the stories tell of people who find the true meaning of Christmas and find that meaning is filled with all kinds of love.

Each of the stories include children and families and in each of them the characters are finding the joy of Christmas.

Ms Balogh is a master at creating characters who are complete people. And she also provides plots which take the reader to the happy ending by way of heart melting events.

I enjoyed this anthology very much. I do not believe that there is another author who is more capable of pulling me into a story and giving me such a warm feeling of happiness at the ending.

Sweet

Very sweet almost treacly short stories celebrating Christmas with all the warm fuzziness associated with the season. Might need to see a dentist afterwards. Children figure prominently in each of the 3 stories and they tug your heart strings. My favorite was the "Porcelain Madonna" with a sweet, steadfast heroine and broken hero.
All of the stories had almost immediate resolutions since they were short stories that requires a suspension of belief but the theme had me nostalgic for peace on earth and goodwill to all men.
Would I read it again? Probably not.
