3 Truths and a Lie by Lisa Gardner
(Detective D.D. Warren #7.5)
With this short story we get a couple of hours in the life of D.D. Warren as she psyches herself up for a difficult challenge that she feels is way above her ability to perform. She is about to stand in front of authors of thrillers and give a 50 minute class on what it's actually like to be a homicide detective. The story does some thrill writer name dropping (someone by the name of Slaughter, for instance) and D.D. draws the crowd in by making the case she talks about being a competition to see who can find out the lie in this 3 truths and a lie homicide. A seedy motel, a hooker, and a sawed off leg is involved in this puzzler. I enjoy these short stories between the novels as they usually give an opportunity for some humor amongst the mayhem.

3 Truths and A Lie is truly a very short story but I couldn’t help being captivated and wanting to know the mystery. What mystery you asked? Well D.D. Warren is one of my favorite female detectives she is a total badass. If you’ve read some of Lisa Gardner’s books you will know why. You will fall in love with D.D’s character. This book was no different it was a really great short story that I couldn’t stop reading.
Detective D.D. Warren takes an assignment she wasn’t thrilled about but her husband the blood splatter expert Alex Wilson had convinced her to do it. When she is usually busy solving crimes on this short story she has a total different assignment; to teach at least one hundred thriller writers about her job, to provide them with the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. She had only fifthly minutes to teach her blood eager students and she wanted to make it worth their time. Boy was it worth it?! Yes it was I was so captured by her story that I felt like one of the student sitting in front of her picturing the crime scene she was describing trying to answer her questing and figuring out what a detective would do to solve this crime and who the killer was. I was fascinated with this story and her attitude of course i love her.

She figured the best way to keep her class awake was to tell them about the most shocking true case she had to solve. I don’t want to give out the details because it’s so short that I will be giving away the book and it’s so good not to read it. D.D. educates her classroom how to solve a murder the right way by providing them step by steps details of what a real murder case is handled under her authority. She made her classroom guess all the clues and at the end I was so shocked that I didn’t figure out what the lie was bahaha. I should have known but I was just like the writers sitting hungry to try to figure out what she was saying. It truly was a good book that kept me on the edge of my bed. Now I feel the need to get more of this writer. She teases you with the first two chapters of her new book coming out on February of next year and boy do I want to get my hands on that book right now?! Yes I do. To all my romance readers this book may not be for you as it is a suspense thriller with no romance.

Detective Sergeant D. D. Warren is asked to do a presentation to a group of thriller writers about police procedure. When she turns and faces the room, D. D. abandons her plan and decides to tell a story about a recent, bizarre case and ask the group to figure out the three truths and a lie.
I’m not a fan of novellas but this one was pretty clever. It’s too short for me to provide more details without spoiling it for other readers but what I can share is I was just as engaged as the group in that conference room and enjoyed how she singled out some of my favorite, real life authors. I attempted to guess the answers, too, and the narrator brought a level of wit that made this fun.

Detective D.D. Warren and her husband, Alex, are taking a “vacation” in Wisconsin as featured guest speakers at the Writers’ Police Academy. As a bonus they get to hobnob with popular thriller writers, and attend the other work-shops for free. D.D.’s a little nervous; really a day in the life of a homicide detective is not nearly as exciting as the fictional mysteries they write. D.D. decides to regale them with one of the most bizarre mysteries of her career involving “seedy motel, a hooker, and a dismembered leg”. With that lead in she has her class (and me) riveted to the pages as she goes through the crime and uncovers the murderer.
3 Truths and a Lie was a fast, fun, Forensic Files type of mystery. Real life authors Karin Slaughter, Kathy Reiches, and Joe Finder make an “appearance” with Joe showing off his knowledge of Locard’s principal. D.D. managed to keep her audience on the edge of their seats until the last reveal.
I revel in every scene where Alex and D.D. are featured. I was a huge fan of their romance even though their relationship has usually taken a back seat to the mystery of the stories. There was a short exchange, but it was nice to see them still solid together as a married couple. They went through some rough times in the last book, Fear Nothing, because of D.D.’s injury.
You don’t need to read the previous books in the series to enjoy this short story. The audio copy is FREE on Audible right now! I listened to it after reading the e-copy because I adore the narrator, Kirsten Potter, and because this short story was that good. Both e-copy and audio version includes the first 2 chapters of Lisa Gardner’s next mystery featuring D.D. Warren, Find Her . I’ll be reading that soon!

D.D. has fifty mintues to 'teach' aspiring thriller writers on the art of being a detective. She chooses a great scenario to put to the writers, and she has great banter in the back and forth in answering the questions and posing the many possibiliites.
It was interesting how she explains how her team work well together, and have their own shining moments, like getting information without warrants and having the gift of the gab when it comes to questioning suspects, and ably assessing the medical scenarios they may come across. It shows the tightness of her crew, with Phil and Neil. I love how DD works a crowd, she is controlled, smart, and in this arena she is quite the performer.
A very short novella which I tried to source from the library, and in the end had to remind myself I do own a Kindle. I just missed the mention of her injury, she was very badly injured in the preceeding book. I thought this worth a mention.
I have number 8 sitting here ready to be devoured, I love this series; and probably moreso the character development, particularly that of Detective D.D Warren!

Wow, this story had me hooked from the start. I don’t think I have ever been so completely enthralled by a short story.

This was a really good short story. I was completely focused on the story and felt like I was one of the people in the room as she was giving the lecture. I just had to know what happened in that hotel room! There was a preview for another book at the end of the download so the story was actually pretty short but very worthwhile.

This was very short, but had enough compelling details where I flew right through it. Loved that Detective D.D. Warren is visiting a crime writer's convention and author Lisa Gardner has several of my favorite writers in the crowd, including Karin Slaughter!
I have just one more -- 9.5 -- and then I will have read the entire D.D. Warren series. I hope there are more coming in the future!

What an excellent short story!
Detective D.D. Warren has 50 minutes to educate a class of bloodthirsty thriller writers on the ways of actual police work. She chooses to describe, to the writers, one of her most gruesome cases.
Ms. Gardner includes actual famous thriller writers in her class which I found to be an awesome addition to the story.
I would have loved to be in that classroom!

My Rating: 4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ quirky and fun with typical Gardner writing…top notch!!!
Of the three short DD Warren stories this was my fave, I really liked the quirky case, I liked that DD was speaking at a thriller convention, honestly I thought this would be lame but it was cool. I liked the name dropping Gardner did.
It was interesting and I wasn’t sure how she was going to wrap it up in the 49 pages that this book is. But as it turns out it was just enough… I didn’t guess who the baddie was which is fun and I was engaged the whole time.
I really enjoy a good short story but they have to be good because you can only do so much with under 50 pages so you better make them worthwhile… out of the three shorties this one is by far the best and the one I would recommend.

This is one of my go to authors. I have had this short story for a while and finally got to it. I loved the format of it. D.D.Warren was speaking to a group of mystery writers. Gardner ended up telling the story through D.D. telling a story to the writers. Gardner gave a shout out to some popular suspense writers which was cool. Great stroy, told well! Recommended.

Not being familiar with Lisa Gardner's character Detective D.D Warren, this was a great place to start. It's out of order within the sequence of the series, but because it's a short story it's not attached to any specific. I enjoyed this a lot. Great character in a bite size plot.

I liked this short mystery story more than I anticipated considering that I am unfamiliar with the series. So it was a pleasant surprise to find that it is set in Boston with some excursions into a suburb I know well!
Kirsten Potter did a good job narrating. I will have to try some more D.D. Warren books...

Not a big fan of novellas, but I liked this one better than most. Boston detective DD Warren is convinced by her husband to speak to mystery writers at a symposium. She recounts a case involving a dead man in a seedy hotel, missing a leg, which is discovered on a bed of dry ice in the bathroom. The dead guy had a long time obsession with this leg, which he felt was not his. Weird.

DD Warren is giving a 55 minute class on correct police procedure to a bunch of criminal fiction writers, including Kathy Reichs, Karin Slaughter, Joe Finder, etc. She tells them at the very first there will be 3 truths and a lie and they have to figure out what is what from the real case that she had worked on. Not giving out any more than this - it's a quick and good read.
This doesn't happen very often, but 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

Warren is a Boston Sergeant Detective who gets to share her experiences with a class of writers. Writers who attend the Writer's Police Academy, which I'd love to attend one day. It is up to DD to lead authors like Karin Slaughter, Joe Finder, and Kathy Reichs in a discussion, while tempting them with a game of Three Truths and a Lie.
Can DD keep a class of eager writers entertained for 50 minutes? Can DD come up with an entertaining and puzzling case without them guessing what the truths are and what the lie is? DD will tell the story of case involving a dead man, a dismembered leg, and a seedy motel room. It is DD jobs to get the writers involved in the discussion and see which parts of the story are truth and which are lies.
If you have followed my reviews for any length of time, you know that DD is, my opinion, one of the best female heroines in the Mystery, Thriller Genre. Even though this novella is short, it gets to the heart of who DD is, and how she ends up solving one of the more bizarre cases in recent memory. Audible provided this story for free and it was cute. Detective D.D. Warren gives a lecture to a group of crime writers, and she does it by telling the story of one particular dead body and how it was solved.
It was super short (about an hour) and was entertaining. Also, I correctly guessed the bad guy, and I always like feeling smart, even if I'm only smarter than a fictional room full of crime writers.
It was very well narrated by Kirsten Potter, and it was a fun hour spent listening while walking my dog.

This short story was written from the perspective of DD as she attends a crime writers convention to give a lecture on real police detective work. It felt very surreal as I imagined Gardner's fictional detective walking around and interacting with actual crime fiction authors like Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reichs! The story itself was a classic 'locked room' mystery and kept me guessing until the end.

Lisa Gardner is one of my favorite authors and I've read every one of her novels and it wasn't that this short story was bad but I didn't enjoy it much. Out of every book I've read by Mrs. Gardner this one is my least favorite. Of course I'm still going to read her next novel though.

My first GARDNER and I picked it up just because I needed something short! And of course now I have another thriller writer whose books I'd end up collecting😏
The short tale is about an interaction/interview between a detective and a group of thriller/mystery writers where the former lets them on a case, gives them the details and asks them to predict who the murderer is.

The short tale is about an interaction/interview between a detective and a group of thriller/mystery writers where the former lets them on a case, gives them the details and asks them to predict who the murderer is.

Interesting little novella in which D.D. Warren lectures a class of thriller writers that includes some well known names in the writing world like "Slaughter". This was intriguing, but very short. I enjoyed the format of D.D. using a past case to "teach" a class while charging the class to figure out the "lie" in her presentation.

Listened to this without knowing it was book 7.5 in a series. Now I need to read all the D.D. Warren books. Good stuff!

Lisa Gardner has produced some of my favorite fictional characters and right at the top of the list is Boston detective, D.D. Warren. In this novella, D.D and husband, Alex are attending a fiction mystery- thriller writing workshop. D. D decides to talk about one of her team's strangest cases and challenges her audience to discover the 'three truths and a lie."
I really enjoyed that Gardner included authors like Karin Slaughter and Kathy Reichs and showcase the realm of authors who like to write a particular genre of books. Most readers don't appear to like novellas, but I really enjoy the trend. Now to count down the days until the new Lisa Gardner book!
