this volume was the concluding arc to yona and the pirates trying to help a small port town who are under the control of a tyrant running a human trafficking operation.

“And Yona is human too. No one can stop themselves from falling in love.”

i love seeing yona just continue to reclaim her own agency and just become more of a badass each installment. look at my katniss everdeen wow. i just love yona so much, but i also loved seeing all the dragons come together, learn to work together, and want to continue to choose each other and yona.

and wow at finally being reunited with su-won and get a glimpse into what he has been up to (while also seeing the cover of vol. 8 and quaking)! also, the love potion chapter at the end of this... hak, we are all rooting for youuuuuu !!

content and trigger warnings: captivity, human trafficking, battle, violence, gore, blood

Our princess shocked everyone by taking down the final enemy of the arc! She did not remain the pampered princess she was for her friends.

Yona is on the dawn of fire. 🔥

And of course, I would not forget the happenings about the love potion and Hak's feelings about Yona. 🤭

3.5 stars.
This was the best volume so far in my opinion. Yona toughens up and stands her ground to fight an evil villain who was charged with human trafficking. Yona defeats him and surprises everyone as she shows her fierce and courageous side.
Besides that, I got to see the Green Dragon a bit more and he's agreed to accompany Yona and her friends on the journey to find all the dragons.
It was definitely thrilling to read about.

Despite the last chapter being weird for me personally (please no romance from the dragons, *especially* Gija because his heart is so pure and feel he didn't deserve that *cries*), this was an excellent volume! I found myself saying "Yes! FINALLY something is happening!" once I saw the volume started out with a bang and really saw Yona shine for more than a panel or two, but consecutive pages. With that, I really continue to appreciate the mangaka's art. I LOVE the fierceness of many of the expressions and was especially surprised by the winning move by our red-haired princess.

The story with Jaeha continues to be an interesting one. He's not my favorite dragon out of the three we've met so far, but I do like him and found I was relieved by his reasonings of joining the "crew." Since I desperately wanted him to always be a pirate, I personally felt at peace with his decision and not upset about moving forward in the story in regards to him specifically.

However, the biggest thing that made me laugh(?!) is the appearance of Su-won because I was glued to that entire scene. Apparently he is what I need more of because I felt a shift in me when he showed up! LOL! Truly never expected I would ever feel that way! Ha!

This is the first time I can really say I enjoyed ALL of a volume (minus the finally chapter) for ALL the characters, not just anyone who WASN'T Yona. I'm feeling more hopeful in regards to reading more volumes and hope we get more Sinha because I TOTALLY fangirled when he showed up in an EPIC (but brief *sobs*) moment during battle. YOU GO SINHA!!

Battle of Awa. Yun gets captured, Yona is in peril before Jaeha and Sinha show up. Yona ends up killing someone. The town celebrates and she runs into Su-Won the morning after. She then leaves and Jaeha joins. Ends with a comedy chapter about a love potion white dragon scale.

El capítulo final extra es genial XD. Me he hecho reír mucho. Va sobre las propiedades de una escama del dragón blanco! 💧

4.25 ⭐️ rounded done. This is definitely the end of a minor story arc and had some funny moments. Jaeha is getting a little on my nerves because he feels like such a caricature but that love potion scene at the end was pretty funny. Also some good growth for our girl Yona in this one.

The way Yun and Yona infiltrated onto the ship of this awful organization, and how the end of human (women) trafficking was portrayed, was just- ✨✨✨

Yun was the epitome of bravery in this volume; we see that he’s also starting to open up to the group, which is also very heartwarming hehe🤧

Yona is turning more and more into a badass with each upcoming volume, and I am living for it✨

The beginning of chapter 39 was wild😳 She should have nonetheless used the sword lmao

Su-Won who?? Fuck that guy😤

And now, waiting for the 8th volume to arrive so that I could continue obsessing over this manga😭😂

This was a good one :) Jaeha is not my favorite character, but he has his moments at least. It was nice to see Yona more involved with stuff. Started the 8th volume already, and I'm excited because I'm getting close to being done with the material that was covered in the anime. So it'll be nice to get new info now :)) Anxious to see what direction this'll go in, and I know it's still not finished yet either. Really hoping we'll have less if Su-won xD But I know that's probably not likely any time soon lol

Su-won, who makes a brief reappearance in this volume, is consistently one of the most interesting characters. Despite my dislike of him, he's clearly conflicted in his feelings, not just for Yona, but for what he has done. Even as he believes in what he's doing, he seems to regret it, and when he learns who has killed Kum-ji, I expect that his conflict will only grow.

Okay, this volume was SO INTENSE on a number of levels—battle wise, emotional wise, every other thing in between wise—the level of feels was just all over the place! I loved it! Because we all love when a book emotional wrecks us…

Poor Yona goes through more emotional turmoil then she has been for awhile, and I felt so bad for her. And Su-Won has got to be one of THE MOST confusing villains I’ve ever met which is prompts to the mangaka because most of the time I just don’t get him while also seeing his point in some ways kinda, sorta, maybe?!? The dude’s just confusing!

The action was amazing, and I can’t wait to see how this looks in the anime (I haven’t seen these episodes yet). And the last chapter is just pure comedy, yet slightly uncomfortable and embarrassing for those involved gold. 🤣🤣🤣

Though I’m with Hak, like seriously Yun what kind of battle do you use a love potion in? Though that could make for a funny and interesting twist… 🤔

Content: mild swearing; violence and blood (nothing over PG-13); asking for and drinking of booze; a male character takes his shirt off (nothing more); some suggestive comments/hints; a girl starts to take off her outer dress in front of men (she’s not paying attention) but is covered/stopped by someone; a love potion is taken that immediately makes one fall in love with the first person they see male, female, or…squirrel (this is played as comedy as none of the characters involved have romantic feelings for each other)

I still love the story but Jaeha’s too much of a creep in these introductory chapters. I really hope the tone changes a bit with his character in regards to Yona as the series progresses!

Check out more manga and graphic novel reviews @ Perspective of a Writer...

This is a review of volumes 7-8 which I read together back to back. See the plot section for my thoughts on the individual volumes.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Soo-won who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

Yona of the Dawn vol 7 starts reintroducing us to Su-won and so we see that with only 1 more dragon to find we will be returning to the new emperor and his plans for the nation. This is a cusp issue where a story arc is too long to fit in the volume and it ends at the beginning of the next... These are fun volumes since Mizujo Kusanagi explains in an aside that at readers' request she is drawing fun comedy chapters that incorporate all the characters that travel with Yona.

This takes us into Yona of the Dawn vol 8 where sure enough we are back to Su-won's POV. At the start of the volume I rolled my eyes and groaned to myself... but then when I started reading it I became really engrossed in what the mangaka was telling up about Su-won... I really loved meeting the Earth general and his wife! He had the same skepticism I did and like him I was won over... Now who do I vote for?!

The tension is well and truly present with Yona of the Dawn vol 7-8 and that is because Su-won is back for sure! The way he was reintroduced into the story was fascinating and was the start to that tension... Then when we are won over to his side with the dishes mock war game the questions start racing through your mind... Will Yona be able to remain strong in the face of her love? Can she put his betrayal behind her if it means happiness for her people... and herself?

I really think the art is getting better and better... When Yona and Su-won meet again... GAH THE ART IS GORGEOUS!! Like this was the scene that made me well and truly a fan of the mangaka's art and I won't be swayed again. It maybe that as she draws these characters over and over she becomes her confident and can drawn quicker and that shows in the art. For sure I know the screens are better and Yona of the Dawn has become a series I have to purchase!!

The thing about Su-won is that I think he chose the harder path... He knew he had to do something for his father's empire... It was going to seed in the worst way and he could have woed Yona and gotten it back the old-fashioned way... marriage but he wanted to be true to his father's legacy and do it the way HE would have done it if he lived. He really betrayed Yona with the best intentions for his people. And poor Hak! This is a guy he admired... yet he can't agree with his methods...

Yona of the Dawn vol 7-8 gets this story going!! YAY! We are back with the betrayer... Su-won the new emperor... And he can be a really nice guy! He really wasn't selling Yona a song when they were younger... And we get to meet some new characters that are fun to follow around! I'm looking forward to meeting other generals of the kingdom now that I've met the earth one.

**Mild Spoilers of a chapter in Yona of the Dawn vol 7.**

As a writer I don't really agree with how the group meets the yellow dragon. I mean a chapter is a little swift!? We couldn't get a fun volume where there is a comedy of errors?! Or meeting his couldn't be worked into the next story arc and combined? It's just so lazy and unlike this mangaka. So my conclusion as a writer is that she must have plans to explore his back history and nature more in future story arcs. She must have realized we NEEDED to get back to Su-won and get the story started!!

⋆ ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Authenticity
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Tension
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Plot
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Art

Yona twisted her ankle on the boat so she’s injured but they knock out the guard but these other guards trap them & Yoon has to protect Yona & reveals he’s a boy pirate & they’re going to kill him on deck & Yona manages to light the firework to signal to the pirates where they are - they’re about to kill her when Jae-Ha arrives OMGG PIRATE BABY along with Shin-ah - they get to the ship Kum-Ji’s on & find him rowing away in a smaller boat & Jae-Ha goes after him & ruins their boat but falls in the water & Yona SHOOTS THE BASTARD DEAD. HER FIRST KILL!! Much to Hak’s everlasting shock i’m sure haha.

So the whole town is grateful to them & everyone gets drunk together & it’s a crazy ass celebration.
BTW when are we gonna see more of Soo-Won & his whole deal?
And speaking of that devil, Yona goes for a walk in town & RUNS INTO SOO-WON OMG WHAT - he’s there investigating the illegal business Kum-Ji was involved in & it shocked to find out Yona’s alive & knows Hak’s been protecting her - he thought she’d died at those cliffs where they fell and met Yoon & Ik-soo -so anyway, Yona goes for Soo-Won’s knife & he stops her, saying he can’t die right now because there’s something he must do & says goodbye & leaves her
She doesn’t tell Hak about Soo-Won when he finds her but they’re moving onto the next place - Jae-Ha isn’t there (but he damn well will be i’ll bet)
But Captain Gi-Gan gives her the remaining Senjusou to take with her - she’s really like a kick-ass mom & Yona starts crying aww - they go & Shin-Ah discovers Jae-Ha who claims he’s got free time so he’ll travel with them & do as he pleases but he still claims to not be following the destiny of the dragons. Mhmm.
Moon’s given a scale of Hakuryuu when leaving the town of Awa & supposedly the scale works as a love potion, which Kija needs to be enlightened about CUTE BOY & Jae-Ha teases if Kija would like to use it on Yona LOLOL - Jae-Ha licks the scale & pretends he’s in love with Kija…but seriously, they had a few weird moments hehe pretty boys - anyway, Jae-Ha dissolves the love potion scale in water & leaves it out when Shin-ah chases it & OMG KIJA COMES ALONG & DRINKS THE WATER NOT KNOWING & turns & sees Yona OMG LOL (WOULD’VE BEEN HILARIOUS IF HE SAW JAE-HA) - Yona’s over it the next morning LOL & kind of flattered he tried seducing her so passionately HAHHAA - and the scale came from Kija’s grandma hahahah they were gonna try using it on him but he left with Yona LMFAOOOO
