4 stars! What a fabulous third installment! As someone who struggled with book two, I'm so pleased with The Case for Jaime. Book 4 cannot come soon enough!

The characters in this novel are truly remarkable. Charlotte and Jamie are one of a kind. I believe I have yet to find a set of characters in a young adult contemporary novel that are more well-rounded, developed, and self-aware. It's so refreshing to follow two characters so raw and realistic with captivating internal monologue and a powerful relationship between the two. Brittany Cavallaro is an immensely talented author and I cannot wait to see where she takes this story in the final installment.
As A Study in Charlotte and The Last of August both are told entirely from Jamie's perspective, I ADORED the introduction of Charlotte's POV. The story felt finally complete, even though I don't believe anything was previously missing.
I will note that this novel is less plot-driven compared to the first two installments. I found this story to be a tad more mellow (though it does not lack action scenes) and the mystery was not as strong as the previous books. That being said, due to the fabulous characterization, I couldn't be any less bothered by it. It's still an engaging story.
The Charlotte Holmes series is absolutely fantastic. If you have yet to start it, I would HIGHLY recommend.

You guys, the brilliance of this book. Where do I start. Okay. Let’s start with fact that we get a Charlotte Holmes POV for much of the book. Charlotte is one of the most incredible characters ever to appear in YA.
She is genius, hilarious, sardonic, perfectly flawed and vulnerable. I would gladly read another 50 novels with her in them. Jamie is the most perfect best friend and foil for Charlotte.
I really think Brittany Cavallaro is the Tana French of YA. She writes these gripping, intricate plots that tick like a Swiss watch, all rendered in these perfect, crackling sentences. She’s a published poet, and it shows.
If you love the great worldbuilding of sci-fi or fantasy, you’ll love this series. If you love the voice and emotional intensity of contemporary, you’ll love this series. If you love the twists and turns of mystery, you’ll love this series. It truly has something for everyone.
Do yourselves a solid and pick it up. Pick up the first two books in the series if you haven’t. You’ll thank me.

“being a woman with a contrary opinion does not render me hysterical.”
these books sadly seem to be deteriorating in how much i’m enjoying them as the series goes on, which truly upsets me. that doesn’t by any means equal that this one is bad, but actually quite the opposite; i just have so much love for these stories and characters that makes me just want them to be as exciting as possible, which surely can’t always be the case.
nevertheless, i just would truly DIE for charlotte and jamie. it’s been quite some time since i’ve been so incredibly attached to a set of characters. that goes along with the fact that this book was very character-driven compared to the previous two installments. the lack of plot used to bore and lowkey annoy me in the beginning, but i ended up not minding it as much after half of the book, since brittany cavallaro’s writing of the characters just improves with every! single! book!

I love love this series! I started it because of I am a fan of any retake on Holmes and Watson and within the end of the first book I bought the second and waited impatiently for this third book! I love the characters in this series. Even the villains are amusing. I cannot wait for more books in this series!!!!!

this book was probably my least favourite from the series, i write this with tears in my eyes from betraying my love jamie
okay but for real WHY THE HECK WAS CHARLOTTE AND JAMIE SEPARATED FOR THE MAJORITY OF THIS BOOK??? like theyre sherlock and watson THEY NEED EACH OTHER TO BREATHE, this was truly saddening
but also, the chapters that they were together were so bloody good and fjdlkajflka their friendship/relationship/detectiveship is just written so well and realistic. they screw up and get upset at each other but theyre literally so far gone they would die for each other.
sounds like true love to me 👌
i definitely enjoyed finding all those references from the show now that im reading with this knowledge wink emoji wink emoji i know how to waste my time more like it
i just really found the first half of the book to be tedious. i would read chapters and chapters and absorb almost nothing bc well, nothing really happened and i KNOW IM SUPPOSED TO OVERLOOK THESE KIND OF STUFF BUT I SORTA COULDNT
but the second half was epic and i screamed at every plot twist and yes i love brittany cavallaro
and i love my baby jamie ??? how ?? is ?? he ?? so ?? perfect ??
THE EPILOGUE HAD ME GRINNING FOR 20 FULL PAGES, theyre so cute gahhh
i want book 4 :(

I just love Jamie and Charlotte so much. I love the complexity of these characters and their relationship. I didn't like this installment as much as the second book but I still absolutely loved it. I liked a lot of the relationship conflict in this book, but I thought the mystery wasn't as exciting (that's not to say that it isn't good; I still had a great time reading). I'm beyond excited that there's going to be a fourth book. I need more of this in my life. Ugh, I just love it so much. PLS READ THIS SERIES. I know the concept sounds weird, but IT. IS. SO. GOOD.

Pros:
- complicated relationships: I love the relationships in this series, all of them are really messy and complex and I think that it makes them all so interesting. Jamie/Charlotte obviously have a messy dynamic, but I also love the relationship between Milo and Charlotte, and Leander and James a lot.
- realistic depictions of trauma: A lot of this book is dealing with the outcomes of the trauma the characters have experienced and I really like how realistic it is? Jamie is dealing with his PTSD through most of this book and I think it was good how so much time was put into exploring how doing all these things these kids do has an affect on you, especially if you're a teenager. Anyway I just feel like I don't see this in YA enough and I'm living for it
- Jamie and Charlotte: I LOVE THEM. I WOULD DIE FOR THEM. MY BABIES. I loved how their relationship developed in this and the angst was like .. so good.
Cons
- the plot: where .. was it? Nothing really happened in this book until the last 100 pages and it showed. The relationships and character development didn't really make up for the fact literally NOTHING WAS HAPPENING the entire time
- the villain / twist was predictable: The things involving the villain & their plan was so predictable. I also thought their whole monologue / motivations was so ... "moustache twisting villainy" which was annoying after I thought The Last of August did a good job of complicating the villains

SHIT FUCK DAMN. this was something else. really. like the plot was pretty shit but there was something else to it that had me CHOKING. let's discuss:
1. jamie & charlotte are obviously the reason i read these books and they were at their best level of angst. it wasn't that much of "will they won't they" so much as "let's desperately try to find a way to make this work even though we're not saying we love each other it's so obviously clear" and a bitch was here for it. so. damn. here. for it.
2. the fcking pLoT tWiSt boi!!! it was sincerely the best one in the entire series. i was shaken to my core and it was just very well done. like the overall pace of this book was all over the place but that twist almost made up for it
overall i am going to re-read that epilogue everyday until i am post-menopausal and am growing chin hairs. and even then i'll probably keep reading the epilogue. i'm a dumb bitch, and that hasn't changed the entire time i've been alive. night night

All these mystery books are the reason why I have trust issues.

This series is seriously taking a deep sea dive in regards of my reading taste.
The positive:
- Because Charlotte and Jamie BARELY spend any actual real time together in this book there was a lot less of the unnecessary and honestly badly written "sexual" tension (aka Jamie staring/thinking/dreaming of Charlotte in "romantically" ways and apparent interest that is both creepy and honestly... what?? Why?) so that was okay.
- It wasn't 500 pages long so it was over pretty fast.
the negative AKA a lot of the same as the first AND second book:
- Jamie is again a suspect of something
- Jamie is again blamed for things
- Jamie is again hurt
- Charlotte is again a druggie
- Charlotte is again using Jamie
- The relationship between those two is really horrendously toxic in the worst way and i HATE that it is constantly pushed towards the romantic side when they are BARELY working as friends. WHY?
- That all side characters are just in this book for the small moments where there needed to be someone else in it and thats it. No real developments, no real plot lines for them
- no actual mystery, instead very juvenile "pranks"
- More of the same suspects and more of the same bad guys
- not a great ending

I really enjoyed my reread of the first book, i still had issues with the first book but enjoyed the writing and the characters okay in the first book.
The second book already felt like i mess without actual plot and basically just the same plot points of the first book rehashed after scrambling them up.
This book felt even more like that. And the story split between Jamie and Charlotte didn't help the story, plot or developments of any kind AT ALL.
I am disappointed.
It wasn't good for me, and that makes me sad because it could have been. There are those little moments where it is clear that Cavallaro has the ideas, but it seems like she doesn't think she should step out of her writing comfort zone she created with the first book.
For me a mystery book series needs new "villains", new cases and interested developments to keep me interesting. Not a constant repeat of what i really read.
So sadly this did not work for me -clearly.
I do think that if you don't mind reading very, very similar stories and don't mind not having character developments and bad relationships this will be a good read for you.
I do hope that if/when Cavallaro writes the next book she will finally venture a bit out of the same old and try something new to make it a bit more interesting again.

I should have skipped this, but I was hoping that maybe, just maybe Cavallaro could pivot this series. With talk of a fourth book coming out I wanted something interesting out there in the world of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson. Instead this Young Adult pastiche in the world of Sherlock Holmes is lacking across the board. We somehow have no development of Charlotte and Jamie, there are no real deductions to be made, we still have Charlotte and Jamie in a toxic friendship and we get to see Jamie's father in his own messed up relationship with a Holmes.
"The Case for Jamie" is the third book in the Charlotte Holmes series. Told in first person points of view by Jamie and Charlotte this time you have back and forth chapters with the not dynamic duo before they finally get to confront another Moriarty.
Jamie is feeling lost and angry after the events of "The Last of August". He is rightfully over the Holmes family and a year later is settled back in school with a girlfriend. FYI, Jamie treats his girlfriend appallingly and at this point I am wondering if he is a undercover MRA or what. There is no there there this time. Jamie is asked to help find Charlotte by his uncle and father because reasons. I am thinking they are alluding to the fact that Jamie is in love or was in love with her or something. Instead of Jamie actually pushing back on this BS he does eventually get involved and becomes a suspect (again) when a series of pranks goes on.
Charlotte and her POV chapters were pretty freaking soulless. I hate her entire family. I know these people are mythical and all, but when Charlotte recounts being told her mother was disappointed that she was raped cause she thought Charlotte could handle herself better, her brother making excuses about how nothing is his fault, and her father is just an absent asshole. There is nothing interesting about the Holmes besides all of them seem to be devoid of feelings. Charlotte is focused on keeping Jamie safe (again) and tracking down another Moriarty.
There is nothing to say about the secondary characters. They are not well developed at all. I didn't like Jamie's father and started to hate Charlotte's uncle. There seemed to be some repercussions for Jamie's father at the end of the book, and once again Jamie barely seems to care.
I honestly felt for August's family. He was a good person who had his life ruined because he romantically rejected Charlotte. Then her brother killed him. He is mentioned multiple times throughout this book, but I felt like no one really gave a damn he was dead and should not be.
The writing was okay, the flow was slow. I think this book was hampered by having alternating chapters between Jamie and Charlotte. Charlotte just recaps things in her chapters that readers should already know about.
The ending was whatever. We have Jamie and Charlotte reunited again and I just don't care enough to read if there is a fourth book.

I just love this series so dearly. Jamie is a top hero for me, and the stories just draw me in in the most addictive way. I still haven't gotten that 5 star feel for me yet...and I have hope that the final book might give me that, but either way this series is a strong win for me and just what the doctor ordered.
Still could use more of that peril, though lol. Sorry not sorry.

5/5 STARS!
I am super happy to give this book 5 stars, especially after the not-so-great second book. But the final book in the Charlotte Holmes series completely lived up to the high expectations put in place by book one.
All the qualms I had with the second book (confusing writing, confusing plot, confusing choices made by characters) were completely cleared up. The writing was tight and fast-paced once more, and the storyline was intricate and full of twists without being confusing in the slightest. The plot was so full of new revelations that I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole time; it was almost like a reading a thriller in places!
And best of all, Jamie and Charlotte had SO much character development. I absolutely loved how in this book readers got both Jamie and Charlotte's point of view, and the alternating chapters worked so well. I identified with and liked Charlotte so much more after reading from her POV. The alternating viewpoints allowed the plot to move forward with zero confusion, while still allowing for complex character evolution.
Based on the greatness of the first and last book, I highly recommend this series to fans of YA mystery or Sherlock Holmes retellings! Even with the meandering second book, the series as a whole is worth it.
I am super happy to give this book 5 stars, especially after the not-so-great second book. But the final book in the Charlotte Holmes series completely lived up to the high expectations put in place by book one.
All the qualms I had with the second book (confusing writing, confusing plot, confusing choices made by characters) were completely cleared up. The writing was tight and fast-paced once more, and the storyline was intricate and full of twists without being confusing in the slightest. The plot was so full of new revelations that I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole time; it was almost like a reading a thriller in places!
And best of all, Jamie and Charlotte had SO much character development. I absolutely loved how in this book readers got both Jamie and Charlotte's point of view, and the alternating chapters worked so well. I identified with and liked Charlotte so much more after reading from her POV. The alternating viewpoints allowed the plot to move forward with zero confusion, while still allowing for complex character evolution.
Based on the greatness of the first and last book, I highly recommend this series to fans of YA mystery or Sherlock Holmes retellings! Even with the meandering second book, the series as a whole is worth it.

Okay, first of all I loved that we got way more of Charlotte's point of view in this book. Usually it's been 1 or 2 chapters, but this was about half and I enjoy seeing into her mind. Charlotte is so smart and her deductions are fascinating, but she also struggles with relationships and has been through some trauma so she sometimes spirals and needs outside help. She and Jamie haven't seen each other for a year at the start of this, since what happened with August. I got a bit confused with the time skips and didn't always know if we were in the past or not.
The case was fun and we finally got to see Lucien! I am looking forward to the final book to see how everything plays out and if Charlotte and Jamie end up together or not.

Both Charlotte and Jamie are dealing with the actions of the Holmes' family from The Last of August. They haven't seen each other for over a year and are both struggling to put the past behind them. Jamie can't help but compare his new girlfriend to Charlotte and Charlotte desperately misses her only friend. Seeing them as separate people was a new experience and I think they really needed the time to heal. But they must be reunited since Lucien Moriarty is out to get the Holmes's. And the best way to get to Charlotte is through Jamie Watson.
Leander and James Sr attempt to draw Jamie out of his funk (I'm not even sure what to call it). Simultaneously Charlotte is trying not to miss him and they're both being pulled/pushed together by the forces that be. I really enjoyed the dual perspectives. Normally, we get mostly Jamie, but this time there was a pretty even switch off and I really enjoyed that. It made it easier to get to know Charlotte and see she's actually a person rather than some of the ideals Jamie had made her into.
Interestingly enough this book doesn't start with a murder, but other petty crimes that Jamie is being framed for. Lucien Moriarty has come for his revenge and Charlotte and Jamie are the center of that. This was such a fast paced book with a bunch of things happening. They didn't always seem related but by the end, I saw how everything tied together. The emails at the end were absolutely adorable and I need more of those.

It's an interesting series and I'll never truly hate anything that's about Sherlock Holmes in any way but the writing was not pulling me in at all(especially Jamie's chapters - he's pretty high mighty with his emotions). And the fact that I'm not at all scrambling to get to the final book shows my true feelings.
The "will they won't they" was very frustrating to read and probably part of my problem in getting into it. Any type of Watson and Holmes duo should be seen as great friends, no matter the gender.
It's was an okay read, and an interesting series, but not what I'm feeling at the moment. Maybe next year I can finish book four and be content.

This book was a bit different from the others in the series so far as it didn’t really have a main mystery to be solved but I still really liked it! The ever-changing relationship between Holmes and Watson is always an interesting dynamic and I love how things ended up in this one.
I love how Cavallaro uses multiple plot lines that converge into one. The pacing was really well done and I liked some of the expansion of characters that we got in this story. I’m really interested to see where things go in the final book!

When you lose interest in a series but you love making bad decisions and keep on when you know it only goes down from here.
The Case for Jamie picks up a year after the last one left off in the shocking death of August Moriarty. Jamie and Charlotte haven't talked at all. While Jamie just tries to get through his senior year at Sherringford, Charlotte is on the run after Lucien Moriarty. Either though neither are looking to team up again, strange things start happening that make it clear someone wants them to. Someone who wants them to suffer.
Ignoring that (if I ever could), Jamie and Charlotte are not even together until the end of this book anyway. Most of the book is Jamie at his posh school dealing with a girlfriend he barely likes and vaguely threatening pranks. Meanwhile Charlotte's side of tracking a man and spying was actually pretty interesting. I love Charlotte more than I ever did in this book and seeing flashbacks that made her the way she is was my favorite part. Cut out Jamie's entire POV and I would raise the rating, sorry! But each book he just gets more and more insufferable. Also I don't remember the last books having so much Charlotte POV because while I originally thought it was a cute nod to the OG to just have Jamie's side, Charlotte really saved me from dropping it.
As for the mystery, wait what mystery? I do wish I had this on kindle so I could search how many times people said the name Lucien Moriarty because wow, it seemed like a lot for a dude we never met before.
I know there is going to be another book but I'm super over this series and honestly it's better for everyone if I just don't.

Being a woman with a contrary opinion does not render me hysterical.While I loved the first book, I think this series just isn't for me anymore. I didn't like the second book and I didn't like this one either. A lot of my dislike is purely on personal taste: I do not and will not support this romance between Watson and Holmes. Just because they are male and female here, doesn't mean they should have a romantic relationship. Either make them both boys and have a romance, or have no romance at all. The fact a romance exists just because boy and girl, doesn't work for me. This entire series is now based on their romantic relationship. Add on to the fact that the romance between this Watson and Holmes is really awkward and has zero chemistry as well. Plus I just really love a good platonic friendship and this series just keeps telling me I should choke for that.

The plot here didn’t feel as all over the place as the 2nd book but it's still not that interesting? This is obviously the aftermath of the last few things that happened in the previous book but Charlotte and Jamie have been apart for a year so more than half of the book is actually them apart (which tbh, they needed bc after all that happened in the prev book? Get some therapy, please, Charlotte and Jamie).
I did love the epilogue here and how the story wrapped up. I hope the next book is just as good or better than the first (which is the only one I loved so far).

3.5 Stars - I enjoyed this one much more than book 2! I actually really enjoyed following Jamie and Charlotte separately for much of the book, which enabled them to grow immensely as characters. I especially enjoyed following Charlotte's POV and getting to know her better. I found the plot much easier to follow than in the last book and enjoyed the plot twist at the end. I am VERY excited to read about the adventures of (Charlotte) Holmes and (Jamie) Watson across the pond in book 4!

i don't know what it was about this book, but i found it significantly more enjoyable than the first two.
but that may have been because of the epilogue, which i found very adorable.
i am not surprised by the addition of charlotte's POV in this book. most of the time, when it was not current events, it was her past, as if to somehow justify the character from books one and two. i found that i don't care, which might make me a bad person? but truthfully.
truhfully, i never liked either her or jamie much anyway so i guess it makes no difference whatsoever. (i guess you could ask why i even bothered to listen to this then, or continue the series, and the answer is: i don't know but i guess i like things that annoy me?) (is that a form of masochism?)
anyway, though. i'm kind of worried what the fourth book will bring because i feel like this ended on a somewhat decent note? but, anyway! i'm glad i liked this. technical rating would be like 3.75-ish stars because why not.
