This was a better book than the first in the series. The suspense plot was tighter and it didn’t have any open threads at the end, however the author chose to have two suspense plot lines, plus a romance in a 230 page book, so the entire thing was rushed and a bit far fetched. This author is too ambitious with her plot lines in this series, and you can see her inexperience as a writer. She has great ideas, does her research and is talented in writing action scenes, but she needs an editor who is skilled in this genre to guide her writing, keep her focussed and poke holes in her mysteries. They don’t really stand up to scrutiny. For example: Hugh has a hit out on him by a local drug dealer because…. He is the only drug sniffing K-9 unit in his small town? So a huge, over $100k hit is out on him. It didn’t make sense. How much money is a small town drug dealer making that he puts out that kind of hit? Considering that if he does succeed, the dog trained to sniff drugs is still alive and the police department would likely replace the officer, you know, as happens with open job positions?
I dunno, I didn’t buy into the motivations of the villain.
Also the romance read a little NA and the characters seemed younger than they actually were. Grace has masters degree and had lived a hard life, but she acted like a spoiled princess who’d never gotten her hands dirty and Hugh read like a high school goofball with no understanding of personal boundaries.
I enjoyed this for the most part but it was hard not to pick it apart after reading a really well written mystery and then jumping from that to this weaker one.
Overall though the story was entertaining and had cute moments and some exciting scenes.

I liked this book. It wasn't perfect but it was definitely entertaining. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, Run to Ground, when I read it a few months ago so I was pretty excited to read Hugh's story. It was a pretty fast read for me since I had a rather hard time actually setting the book aside.

The book opens with Kaylee in her old life. She witnesses a horrifying crime and becomes a target herself. In order to stay safe, she changes her identity and starts all over. Kaylee, or Grace as she is now called, moves in with Jules and her four siblings. I was really happy to see all of the wonderful characters from the first book of the series having such an important role in this book. Grace is slow to adjust to her new life because she is living in constant fear.

Hugh is on leave as he recovers from a bullet wound and he is driving everyone crazy. He keeps showing up and getting involved in things when he is supposed to be resting. He thinks that Grace is being completely honest from the first moment he meets her. He becomes determined to find out what her real story is.

So like I said earlier this book wasn't perfect. Hugh crossed a few lines that kind of bothered me. It was like the man had no boundaries. A locked door....no problem, because he would find a way to get in anyway. This kind of behavior seemed to happen quite a bit at the beginning of the book but did lessen as the story progressed. I think that Grace let him off a little too easy a couple of times in the book.

I did like Grace and Hugh together. Grace is honest with Hugh about her past as soon as it becomes a safety issue and then they really do start to become a team. There were some pretty exciting scenes in the book that really had my pulse pounding. They did have great chemistry with each other and I really enjoyed their banter.

I would recommend this book to others. I enjoyed this action packed romance with wonderful chemistry between the characters. I am looking forward to reading more in the great series from Katie Ruggle very soon.

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Sourcebooks Casablanca via NetGalley.

Initial Thoughts
I liked this book. Grace and Hugh had wonderful chemistry and I loved their banter. There were some exciting moments in the story and I was pleased to see so many characters from the first book playing an important role. The story wasn't perfect but I did enjoy reading it.

2.8 running stars

I do not read the previous book, but the plot is understood without any problem.

Kaylee has her dream life in California, great job, nice home, good clothes, and maybe a dream boyfriend , but then her dream come crushing down with awful reality when she sees something horrible in a party and feel that is more safe to flee frightened for her life.

I really wanted to like this book, that is, a hot cop that works with dogs, and a girl who runs away who ends up working in a kennel? Pasapacá. But the story differs somewhat from that. Unlike other readers, I would have complained a great deal more -internally- in case I had to leave behind all that had been achieved with so much effort in a matter that was not my fault. (And in my case, I would have even regretted having helped those strangers, in fact. Although the latter really were lip service.) So, I like Grace. Yes, she is not a wall flower, and acts when it count.
However, I hate those 'it's-all-my-fault' that all romantic heroines seems to cherish. Ug, no it's not. Like Jules said:

Well, biggest problem? I hate the behaviour of the MC - Hugh Murdoch. Officer, it is not okay to enter a closed property inhabited using a picklock, especially when the motivation is to scrutinize the things of an unknown woman. As well as it is not acceptable the use a picklock up to enter the women's restroom of a restaurant just to talk to that same woman. No, just, no. That is stalker behaviour.

Other thing that bother me: Hugh was shot in the leg during events before Grace's arrival in town, so he is on medical leave. It can not support him well, nor run, nor bend down. And what does he do? He keeps exposing himself again and again to danger knowing that he is not physically fit to do so. And not only that, but also leads the woman who he knows that she is fearful of something to potentially dangerous situations. He's an adrenaline junkie.
-----------
The man was good at getting his way, and his way seemed to lead to trouble a lot.
-----------
(Hugh:)“It’s an excellent plan, and we’re missing all the action.”
“Missing action, when we’re talking about action involving a dangerous, drug-toting motorcycle gang, is actually a good thing.”

-------------

I can't believe in that abscence of logic. Ok-Ok. I'll admit it - I'm one of those that yell to the tv for dumb decisions of fictional characters. Sue me.

And later

Another thing that bothers me in the book is the lack of leadership that has the dog in this story. After all, it is a story with a title K9 with a trained dog to detect drugs. And when his canine companion is injured, there is no mention of harassment of the veterinarian, or treatments or checking how the wound is healing, to see about the poor dog's mentality ... nothing. Maybe if the Hugh POV prevail would be work more, I don't know.

And about the heroine working in a kennel... some mention of cleaning poo and using the hose -and still smelling like roses or whatever- that not count in my book. Nope.

I did not like the fact that the female FBI agent But Grace can really take care of herself.

To all this, the question remains: What happened to the guys in the basement?

Aaand, in another much different note - I like Otto.

A solid four and a half
I really enjoyed this authors Search and Rescue series but struggled to really get into the first book Run to Ground in this new series . In theory it should be perfect for me with interesting characters, charming dogs , romance and suspense as well. Happily I much preferred this story and maybe that's because I'm getting to know these characters and the way they react to situations.
We met Hugh in the previous book when he got shot trying to protect the young brother of his partners girlfriend. As this story begins he's still on leave, cursing at being shut out of what's going on at the station . Hughs about to get a very interesting case of his own though as a new woman moves into town and it's patantly obvious that Grace is to be blunt lying through her teeth!
Grace is hiding from a man who really wouldn't want her talking to the police and just how and why is something that even Grace struggles to come to terms with. Her life wasn't meant to be like this in a small town, with no money and to cap it all sharing a run down house with strangers. Still it wouldn't be all bad if only irritating Hugh would stop sneaking up on her sheesh can't a girl even go to the bathroom in peace? Apparently not!
This definitely had much more suspense running through it as things start to happen that firmly put this couple in danger. The chemistry is funny as Hugh pushes Graces buttons but she always has a snarky comeback . I'm really enjoying just how diverse these mountain guys are and even though they do the same sort of work they actually feel very different and I've got my eye on a certain big quiet guy so hopefully Otto is up next. Plus if you enjoy a little cuteness then yes there's the obvious K-9 partners but cunningly we also continue to be entertained by the Jackson family who featured in the first book . Plus yet again here the younger members definitely steal whatever scene they are in.
A slow burn romance that at times had me almost peaking from behind my hands as Hugh and Grace truly do go through the mill to reach their happy ending. I'm so pleased the author has got into her stride and look forward to the next book.

Kaylee’s life is turned upside down in one night when she stumbles upon a gruesome scene. Afraid for her life she flees California with the help of Mr. Espinosa, the mysterious character who helped Jules (from book one) in the last book. Kaylee takes on the identity of Grace Robinson, posing as Jules’ old high-school friend. She attempts to stay low, but that’s easier said than done in the small town of Monroe, Colorado. Especially, when nosey cop Hugh takes an avid interest in her. He teases, and annoys, but he also makes Grace laugh and forget the seriously scary situation she’s landed in.

On the Chase
was a non-stop thrill-ride! I felt like once Grace and Hugh escaped a close brush with death, another would be upon the them. It’s a mystery whether the threat comes from someone after Grace or Hugh, either is possible. Hugh wants Grace and Grace (begrudgingly) wants Hugh so of course, they stick together to figure it out. Their bickering was pretty funny, you can’t help but laugh when Hugh’s around. Even better, their banter would often turn heated: as in sparks flying, hungry kisses, and more! Loving this series!

On the Chase is book two in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit by Katie Ruggle. You can read this book without having read book one, but I feel you should read in order.

This story covers Hugh Murdoch and his canine partner, Lexi, who is the only drug sniffing dog in the town.

Kaylee was hard to like at first. She’s all about the designer cloths and her large walk in closet. She’s worked hard to get where she is. Coming from a life of little to having everything she wants. She was very material orientated, but her life takes a major turn when she discovers that her boyfriend might not be who she thought.

That opening scene in the big fancy house of her boyfriends family was intense. And what she discovers sends Kaylee into hiding and she finds herself in small town living with a family of siblings (our heroine from book one). Now Kaylee is back to having nothing and working minimum wage.

I eventually I warmed up to Kaylee. She eventually realizes that what she truly lost was her best friend, Penny, and that the life she was making isn't what is important. She really takes a liking to Jules and the family and eventually the town and it’s people.

Hugh is the jokester, has a lock picking problem, is not trusting, but all-around a great guy. I love how much he cares about his friends and his canine partner, Lexi.

Hugh and Kaylee aka Grace as she goes by. These two kinda biker/joke, but in a fun way. Their talks are a way to get each other to come out of the funk or not think about the issues plaguing them. As they start to spend time together, weird things happen around them. Kaylee think’s it’s who she’s hiding from and that she is endangering the people around her.

We get a great cast of characters. The suspense and who is doing the bad things builds wonderful as does the romance between Hugh and Kaylee.

Narration: Callie Beaulieu does a wonderful job again with her narration of On the Chase. I like her voices for all the characters, both men, women, and kids. I'm enjoying listening to this series and plan to continue in audio.

On the Chase was a fun story. I really like Hugh and his jokester ways. I also like his canine partner, Lexi. Kids and canine’s add a little something more to stories and I really enjoy when they are in the books I’m reading.

Let’s just say it—Hugh is a hoot! He is absolutely perfect for Grace aka Kaylee. He’s smarter than he sounds and has a fantastic K9 partner. This one is action-packed because both Hugh and Grace are on hit lists thanks to two drug traffickers. Plot lines are great. Characters are flawlessly portrayed. The storyline is interesting. And the entertainment value is superb.

Book 2 in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit. It is just as good as the first book. It picks up shortly after book one where Jules is visited by an old “school friend” for an extended stay in Monroe, Colorado.

Grace Robinson is on the run she was looking for the toilet but found something worse that she is trying to escape. The only job in Monroe is shovelling shit at the kennels. Grace had adjustment problems to her new life.

I found her to be quite whiney. But she pulls herself out of her pity party and makes the best out of a shitty situation. She finds her backbone throughout the book and realises that things can turn out for the better.

Hugh is recovering from a shotgun wound. He and his dog Lexi are out of commission and he hates every moment of it. So he becomes annoying to everyone around him and starts looking into the riddle that is Grace Robinson.

Hugh is a great Hero. Funny, protective and a big cuddly teddy bear.

The chemistry and the banter is there and I loved every moment of it.

“I’m sorry, but have we met?” His grin grew a predatory edge. “How could you not remember? It was only yesterday that our eyes locked and our souls recognized each other from hundreds of lives before.” “Maybe your soul confused mine for someone else’s?”

Plot wise the story kicked arse. Hugh has some trouble with a hit being out on him and Grace is on the run. At least Grace told Hugh what and who she was running from. I didn’t see the author bringing it altogether and keeping tight knit. She writes the story well and it is action packed with intense moments as well as light hearted moments.

I checked this book and the other reviews written and it seems to be like Marmite you either love it or you hate it. In this case I am an in-between-er.

This was pretty entertaining. I really enjoy books that have good banter between the main couple. It's more of the frustration, flirty banter if that makes sense. It had me laughing a lot.

In book one, Jules needed to save her siblings from her evil stepmom. She kidnaps them and has a "guy" create a whole new identity for them all and moves them to a new location where she falls in love with Theo, a cop. Theo and his partner, Hugh know Jules is hiding something, but Theo is so in love with her, he decides to not look into her past. At the end of book 1, Jules gets a phone call from the "guy" to let her know he's sending a woman to her who needs a new start.

In this second book, we get Grace, aka Kaylee's story. She has found out the guy she's dating is related to a very evil man and she has to run fast and far away for her safety. This brings her to Colorado living with Jules and her 4 younger siblings.

Theo and Hugh take one look at Grace and know she is hiding something as well, only this time Theo wants to know what it is in fear of her bringing danger to Jules and the kids. When Hugh suggest looking into her, Theo agrees.

This is where it got very entertaining. Hugh practically stalks Grace and interrogates her but he tries to do it subtly. It wasn't so subtle and Graces reactions were comical. When someone shoots at Hugh and Grace, she fears her past has found her and confides to Hugh and Theo about her past, but they soon learn it's Hugh who is in danger.

There is a lot going on in this book, between Jules and Theo's continued story, Hugh and Grace's story and the danger that seem to be stalking them around every corner. Instead of overwhelming the reader, it made for a pretty fast pace with enough romance and laughable moments to keep me entertained. I liked book one, but I liked this one even more. I'm looking forward to book 3! ARC provided by NetGalley.

I adore this author and really enjoyed her Search and Rescue series.

So, I was super happy that she was starting a new series, and after really enjoying book 1, I was excited to start this one.

For one thing, I am glad we are getting a continuation from the couple in book 1 (Jules and Theo), and the family as a whole, who I really loved.

The start of this was a little creepy and graphic, and once the heroine got to Colorado, I did struggle to warm to her a bit. She seemed a bit too judgemental about her new surroundings and seemed to be more concerned with missing her old wardrobe of fabulous dresses than being on the run and hiding for her life.

But I soon warmed up to her once we got to the build up of the relationship between Grace and Hugh. The back and forth flirty banter made the book tbh. I loved it. And Hugh in all his stalker annoying glory was a great hero.

It is a great romantic suspense, with a good dash of humour in and I cannot wait to continue the series and see these couples stories continue.

While Kaylee was dating a Disney prince, fancying herself falling for him, she encountered three tortured men in his uncle’s basement, helped them escape, was also forcefully detained by said uncle, escaped herself, ran from the police, and got a new identity and a new location.

Unfortunately that new location comes with a sexy, but nosy cop without nothing better to do, since he’s on sick leave thanks to a hole in his leg, but poke his nose into her business. Then someone tries to blow the cop away, someone takes a shot at them as they’re locking lips...And Grace, as she’s named nowadays, knows the torture-prone uncle with a Slavic (can you say trope?) last name has found her.

Reading this one wasn’t very pleasant. The heroine swung between two extremes—she either whined (mostly in her head, which made the reading of her “scenes” a special kind of torture) and bemoaned her fate (instead of feeling lucky about actually being still alive) or she acted like a demented teenager thanks to the teasing and/or banter from Hugh.
Hugh that I actually liked quite a bit in the previous book, but in this one turned out to be almost as annoying as the heroine. Hyper, obnoxious, and as far from funny or fun (although I guess Ms Ruggle wanted to portray him as such so he could take the heroine’s mind off her predicament) as he could get.

The romance was lukewarm at best and not-there at worst, I didn’t understand what exactly drove these two together except for looks. And the suspense was so convoluted, with yet another villain coming out of the woodwork, just to mix things up, I guess, keep the supposed mystery going, and keep the page-count high.

Everything was rather convoluted, there was too much going on with the two separate suspense sub-plots (one coming out of thin air, the second not actually having a satisfying run or resolution), and I disliked both the main characters.

Definitely not a pleasant reading experience.

DNF. Okay, as much as I enjoyed Ruggles first series, I'm not feeling the love with this one. It's pretty bland, generic, and I keep putting it down in disinterest. I don't even care enough to skim to see how it ends. Don't take my word, there are some gushing pre-reviews, so it might well just not be to my taste.

May or may not try the next one. I'm also bummed that for books with K9 in the series title, it doesn't make much use of the dogs other than window dressing.

Gracie is trying to out run things her eyes and memories will never let her forget. Her childhood created someone that would never have to nothing ever again, nice clothes, fancy shoes, houses so big people can get lost in them. No she’s on the run, fearing for her life, thrust back into nothingness. Learning to trust a small town cop to keep her safe, she never planned on him taking her heart in the process.

Hugh is still trying to recovery from a bullet wound when he starts hounding Gracie for her life story. Unable to believe her story, Hugh continues to pester until he’s started to fight to keep them both alive. Now trusted with life altering secret, he has to protect the woman he’s fallen in love with.

Gracie and Hugh had me laughing from the start, his ability to hone in on her lies, yet his willingness to accept them. Gracie started out as someone who could have easily been an unlikable character, who is now likable and relatable. Ms. Ruggle made this novel so easy to read, the plot was very well developed with a twist I never saw coming! Her secondary characters captured my heart as well; I adore Sam and all of his siblings. On The Chase is a great read that will hold the readers attention from page one through the last page!

Kaylee Ramay, now Grace escaped from a horrific scene, but the perpetrator has power and connection forcing her to assume a new identity in Colorado Rockies. She finds herself sharing the house with Jules and her siblings. We meet them in Run to Ground, and like Grace, they are hiding from their past. This is why I feel you will want to read Run to Ground first and meet Jules and K9 Officer Theo Bosco. Theo's quirky partner, K9 Officer Hugh Murdoch can spot a lie a mile away, and he is obsessively curious about Jules' new roommate. He begins to investigate but soon feels as if he is being watched.

Ruggle delivered a suspenseful, action-packed tale that kept me listening. I teetered between laughing at the chemistry developing between these two and holding my breath at the danger they found themselves in. Theo's K9 Lexi stole scenes. I love the animals in this series and feel they add depth and broke up some of the tension. I adored the comradery between Hugh, Theo, and their dogs, especially in action.

The romance was solid and delivered passion, banter and moments of humor. Hugh cracked me up on more than one occasion and the man makes for s sexy hero in uniform. Grace is smart, sassy and determined. However, I must warn you, despite all the happened to her, don't expect to get all warm and fuzzy over her. She will grow on you and those feelings will strengthen throughout the story, but in the beginning, some of her complaints left a sour taste in my mouth. This could be just me, as I have zero tolerance for whiners.

We get updates on previous threads and couples. I am quite smitten with Jules' siblings and some action scenes involving them were brilliant and humorous. Overall, ON THE CHASE was another fantastic novel in the K9 Rocky Mountain Unit series.

Callie Beaulieu continues to narrate, and I enjoy her narration. Her pacing is right, and I can quickly identify characters by the voices she creates. She and Ruggle are well matched.

3.5 / 5 Fangs

On the Chase started off with a BANG, and I expect nothing less from Katie Ruggle! The beginning of this book was only a preview for how action packed and intense the rest of the book was going to be. This book had so much action, intrigue, and mystery to keep me on the edge of my seat!

The main female character, Grace, was a witty and strong woman. I admired how much she cared about those around her and how she never wanted anyone to get hurt. She did get a bit whiny at times, which annoyed me, but I really liked her overall. Hugh was a snarky and charming man. He was a little too nosy at times, and honestly a little creepy, but I understood that he had good intentions...even it was strange. One of my favorite things about Hugh though was his sense of humor. He always had a funny remark and I loved his carefree attitude.

The romance between Grace and Hugh was steamy and so freaking funny. The banter between Grace and Hugh genuinely made me laugh out loud! The author did a great job at building the chemistry between them. They had some instant chemistry, but I loved that they tried ignoring it by taking jabs at each other.

Overall, this novel was full of suspense and sexy times! I would recommend this to anyone who loves romances fill with nail biting action!

My review of Run to Ground is here.

Not finishing this one. I liked book one with Theo and Jules' relationship, but this love interest, Hugh, has absolutely no boundaries and it's giving me the creeps. He’s excusing breaking into her house and into the bathroom WHILE SHE IS IN THERE on being a cop and being suspicious and then just laughs at her outrage. What the fuck. Hugh is a psycho. And Theo and Jules just laugh it off like it's okay because he's their friend and he doesn't trust Grace? NO.

Did anyone else find Hugh's behavior at the beginning of the book problematic? Picking a lock to get into a woman's home to investigate her with no probable cause outside of "I know she's lying about her history"? And then just laughing it off like it was no big deal. Then proceeding to pick a lock to a women's restroom at a diner, for no other reason than "I just need to talk to you"?

And then everyone just seems to think that this is okay behavior, because "That's just how Hugh is."???

I DID finish the book, but it was honestly hard to invest in a romance that starts off with the main male character having all these red flag behaviors, as well as both main male and main female acting like teenagers the entire book.

Normally the jokey, carefree attitude that Hugh displayed would have been more in line with my likes for main male characters since the broody alphas get old after the tenth romantic suspense in a row. But due to his aforementioned behavior, despite feeling like I should have enjoyed the banter between Hugh and Grace, I found it annoying instead... although probably more so because Hugh kept making light of things that he really should have been taking seriously, and his joking quips seemed kind of crass and inappropriate to many of the situations he was laughing off.

And the jokes also kept flowing to the point it just felt overdone. So instead of carefree and jokey and fun... it just got annoying.

The mystery and thriller parts of the book were interesting at least, but doesn't quite help save my overall enjoyment. I'm still kind of invested in this series though because of the ongoing mysteries rolling over from the first book... so I'll probably continue to read these books and hope that book number two had just been a fluke of some sort and the rest will be better. It's not like I actually had problems with the first book in this series, so was a bit disappointed with this book.

3.5 Stars rounded up.

This is book #2 in the Rocky Mountain K9 series which is set in Colorado. I love having Colorado as the setting and I'm a huge fan of animals in a book - so it's a great set-up. I was disappointed in the first book in this series and found I liked book #2 much better.

I really liked the start of the book with Kaylee/Gracie discovering kidnapped & beaten law enforcement officers during a dinner party at the home of her boyfriend's uncle. The family is definitely not what she originally thought and now she is marked to be "terminated" and needs to hide out. She ends up hiding out with the family from book #1 (Jules and her siblings). It makes for some tight quarters - not sure why she couldn't have her own apartment, but…

Her romance is with Hugh who is on medical leave and not dealing with his down time well. He turns into a bit of a stalker with the new girl in town, Gracie. Sometimes it worked for me and sometimes it was too much. When bullets start flying again, Gracie thinks she's been found, but Hugh has a target on his back as well. The book flowed pretty well and I enjoyed the plot of both Gracie and Hugh being in danger.

There are still some open threads that will carry through to future books, but the primary element of Gracie's story was completed in this book and I appreciated the closure.

Oh, Hugh. I LIKED HIM. From his joking to his pointed questions to his determination to keep Kaylee/Grace safe no matter the cost. (And from here on out, I'll refer to her as Grace just so I don't confuse myself more than I normally am.) *le sigh*

While Hugh plays the friendly joker, Grace is struggling. As I'm sure we all know, things are never simple when you're running from the mob and have no one but yourself to rely on. Except Grace really does have a few people she can trust. Jules and her brood of siblings know what it's like to be on the run. Cranky Theo (I sill love me a grumpy hero) adores Jules too much to look too deeply into her story of Grace being a friend from out of town. Hugh and the rest of the police department (although Hugh is *probably* the main one here) are there to support Grace when things get hairy.

In other words, as bad as things are, Grace has a support structure when she needs it.

And she does need it.

As tends to happen, things aren't as straightforward as they seem on the surface. Hugh is more involved than he realizes and things are going down that no one could suspect in their sleepy Colorado town.

*thumbs up* all around.

I read this book immediately following the first one, and I give the author credit for changing up the first section, where the danger is presented early on. However, the middle and end of the book were very similar to the first one. I recommend that you put some time between these books.

I gave the first book 4 stars, and I will do the same here, but with less enthusiasm.

After adoring Run to Ground, the first in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit, I was prepared to settle back and enjoy this second book in the series. Katie Ruggle's books delight me, what more can I say?

So yes, On the Chase is book two. I would say that it would be okay as a standalone in a pinch since it tackles a new couple and main plot, but, truly it works best following its predecessor where most of the cast and some ongoing situational things were introduced.

I was eager to get back to the little quirky mountain town of Monroe, Colorado, and after briefly introducing the heroine, Kaylee's sticky situation in LA which brings her to town, I was right back where I wanted to be.

I must confess that On the Chase and I got off to a rocky start. It took me a bit to warm up to Kaylee. I didn't hate her, but I did have the urge to tap her for her early squeamish moments because, oh poor thing, she's rusticating in the sticks and has to live in an old house and do a blue collar job. I sympathized with the fact that she lost everything from her recent past life when she had to go on the run after witnessing a crime. She'd achieved the pinnacle of her dreams with a snazzy university PR job, a walk-in closet full of designer labels, a designer car, and a designer prince charming man. But come on, she came from a small town and lived in a basement apartment, it shouldn't have been the culture shock she was whining in her mind about.

So yes, the early encounters and I were a struggle and oh man was Hugh, the hero, over the top with his suspicions and investigations when she hadn't done anything, but lied about her past. Lots of legit reasons why people do this plus Jules, previous heroine, was vouching for her.

As can be surmised, it was a zany set up and early story. I settled in once the romance and the exciting suspense situations picked up. And really, this pair of lovers grew on me so that I was smiling at each encounter. They were both quick with the wit and comebacks. The playfulness and sweet moments were adorable though when the heat turned up, that was good with me, too. They were taking their time with the romance because of all the crazy danger around them, but also because both were convinced there was an expiration date on Kaylee's time in town.

And, incidentally, I just melted when Hugh and his work dog, Lexi, were on the job. Okay, and moments with Jules' younger brothers and sisters getting page time once again were great. Dare I hope that Otto gets his story next?

Anyway, this was another good read in the series and I am ready for more with the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit to see who the mysterious helper of ladies in distress will send their way next. Those who enjoy small town romance blended with exciting suspense should give this series a try.

My thanks to Sourcebooks Casablanca for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

On the Chase is the 2nd book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit by Katie Ruggle. In this story we are introduced to Kaylee who is forced to Monroe after witnessing a terrible crime; here she moves in with Jules and her siblings and becomes Grace-a dog kennel employee. When she first meets Hugh Murdoch, she tries to fight her growing attraction to the man even as he continuously annoys her. When both Hugh and Grace end up in the middle of a dangerous plan to take them out, Hugh promises to keep her safe even while laughing off his own safety; with no other choice, Grace must unwillingly accept his help, come to terms with her feelings for him, and try to keep him safe along the way.

While I had mixed reviews on the 1st book Run to Ground, I was still excited to continue with On the Chase. After finishing this book, I am soooo happy that I decided not to stop after the 1st book. Every problem I had with the 1st book didn't seem to be an issue at all in this one. While the last story seemed to be nothing but downtime, this one seemed to have none-something was always happening.

I really liked this story. I fell in love with the new characters, and enjoyed seeing more of past characters. This book also set up perfectly for the 3rd book and I CAN'T wait for the next book; Loved the epilogue/lead up. Way to go Katie Ruggle. This book was leaps and bounds from the 1st book and hopefully the next one will be even better!

I love Katie Ruggle’s stories, the characters are fun and realistic no matter what situation they’re in. Hugh is, of course, handsome, and he has a sense of humor that is not over the top. I wasn’t sure about Kaylee at first, but she grew on me fast. Together they made a fun couple to read about. It was a fast-paced, action filled suspense, with enough romantic tension to keep me turning the pages for more. I’m liking this new series.

Katie Ruggle has quickly become an auto buy for me. And this new book in the Rocky Mountain K-9 Unit just proves it again!

This is Kaylee and Hugh's story and it's humorous as well as action filled and has the plus of the K-9 partners.

Kaylee is dating a new guy, Noah, and her friend, Penny is not a fan. When she goes to meet Noah's uncle for a dinner party she stumbles on something that has her running for her life.

When she employs the service of Mr. Espina she ends up visiting Jules and the kids and meeting Hugh. With the kids, Theo, and Hugh wondering about her story she is panicking and wants to run again.

With K-9 handler Hugh determined to get to the real answers he is completely exasperating and makes her angry. They begin a verbal sparring match that sets the tone for the book between the two.

With Hugh out on medical leave he has little to distract from the boredom that has become his life than to aggravate his friends and now he has a new puzzle to solve. He wants Jules and the kids safe so he decides he will find out her her new visitor is and if she poses a threat. But with eyes full of fear it seems more likely that she's in trouble. What he doesn't realize is that she isn't the only one.

On The Chase is a book in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series, and the very existence of a unit containing three police dogs and their handlers in a town small enough to have only one diner honestly had me questioning the whole premise from the get-go. As did the idea of a girl who'd moved to California because she loves the warmth and sunshine happily settling down in a back-of-beyond Colorado snow town.

If you can get past those unlikely issues, though, there's a lot to enjoy in this book. Hugh and Grace have great chemistry, bouncing off each other with wit and snark, at cross-purposes until a looming threat forces them to trust each other. From that moment on, they get ever closer, fighting on the same team. Lexi, Hugh's K-9 partner, was adorable and deserved a lot more of her own storyline in the book.

Overall, an enjoyably escapist read. Four stars.

I absolutely love the three K-9 Officers and their doggy partners in this series. Hugh, Otto and Theo are just the kind of handsome, hunky and lovable alpha heroes I love to read. The doggie partners are wonderful too, always coming to the rescue but not hogging the story like some other books with an animal character. This book is about Hugh and Kaylee/Grace and is full of witty banter between the two main characters, which is one of the high points for this book, although I began to wonder if either of them would ever take their situations seriously. This book as the second in the series was a step up from the first book, but still had some serious flaws. 3 1/2-Stars

Only one more to go!

This book, what happened to Kaylee scares the crap outta me. The masks people wear so professionally their own mother wouldn't recognize them. *shudders*

I actually thought Hugh would be my fav what with his ability to always make you laugh and I liked Kaylee too but I'm just not sold.

Guess I'll have to wait till end of book three to pick a fav :D

My Thoughts

Although I missed out on book 1 in this new series, Run to Ground, am going to say that ever since read books of the authors previous action packed series, Search and Rescue am very happy to have been able to grab and read a review copy of On the Chase to catch up on this new series as very much enjoyed the Monroe Colorado setting we are once again taken back to.

As said before I greatly enjoyed my return to small town of Monroe Colorado, it has its own special appeal for a couple of reasons. One reason is its lack of sophistication, instead the appeal lies in the rugged beauty of nature rather than fancy restaurants or other elements associated with living in a city.

The icing on the cake though was Grace and Hugh, they were like oil and water which turned into a give and take banter which in turn became a very natural romance for the pair.

As much as I missed having Hugh and K-9 partner Lexi do their job as part of the story the pair of them still managed to have some moments here and there that were pretty interesting. Not the least of which happens unexpectedly when Hugh’s home is the setting.

Kaylee is an example of someone who is unlucky enough to be caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, she was lucky to escape with only bad memories of the experience to take with her into hiding.

Sadly this dynamic duo seem to attract trouble over and over, with the final outcome a happy one rather than what could have turned out to be their respective last hurrahs.

Hope to catch book three for review as am totally caught up in the cast of characters and would love to see who ends up in Monroe Colorado next and why.

On the Chase provides a stellar follow-up to Run to Ground, making Ruggle's Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series one that's not to be missed.

After Kaylee witnesses a crime, she goes on the run and becomes Grace. She finds sanctuary with Jules, heroine of book 1. And while Jules's storyline isn't advanced with this book, that doesn't matter because it allows the focus to stay on Grace and Hugh.

Recovering from an injury, Hugh is antsy and itching for something (anything) to do. When mysterious Grace rolls into town, he can't help himself from investigating. (Or talking. Or pushing someone's buttons.)

Nonstop action and lots of fun tension make On the Chase unputdownable.

I absolutely loved this book!! I’ve sort of been on a small unintentional hiatus from romance novels and returning to this gem was amazing! Action packed, non-conventional sappy love, and a better happy ending than the first one =]

My only critique is that the end was so abrupt! I wanted to see the reunion between penny and Kaylee/Grace, I wanted to see Hugh and grace go on the date, and I most certainly wanted a bit more dirt on the Jovanovics!

Final comment: will we see more of Agent Shankle?!
