Eagle Harbor #5

Love's Winter Hope

Rate this book
Journey back to a time when neighbors knew each other's names, and a handshake meant a person's honor. The bestselling Eagle Harbor Series continues with Book 5, Love’s Winter Hope.

When Jessalyn Dowrick’s husband left her and their three daughters to head west five years earlier, she had no choice but to pick up the pieces of her broken life and continue without him, eventually supporting herself as Eagle Harbor’s seamstress, and secretly hoping her husband would return. But days soon slipped into months, and months into years, all without word of Thomas or a cent of the money he’d promised to send.

While working day and night to build a new life that his wife would be proud of, Thomas wrote Jessalyn every week, asking her to come to South Dakota. But she never arrived. In fact, she never answered a single one of his letters. When he returns to Eagle Harbor in search of answers, he finds a woman who thought him dead . . . and soon regrets he didn’t come after her earlier.

As winter closes in and storms trap Thomas in town until the harbor opens in the spring, will he be able to convince his wife he’s worth a second chance?

Come visit the historical town that readers can't get enough of.

Naomi Rawlings is the author of historical Christian novels, including the Amazon bestselling Eagle Harbor Series. While she'd love to claim she spends her days huddled in front of her computer vigorously typing, in reality, she spends her time homeschooling, cleaning, picking up, and pretending like her house isn't in a constant state of chaos. She lives with her husband and three children in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula, along the southern shore of Lake Superior where they get 200 inches of snow every year, and where people still grow their own vegetables and cut down their own firewood--just like in the historical novels she writes.

Love’s Winter Hope was hard for me to set down! I loved the interactions between Jessalyn and Thomas. I empathized with both of them and the frustrations and struggles they faced. Jessalyn battled feelings of distrust and fear and Thomas battled feelings of desperation and guilt. These emotions were palpable throughout this story, making me truly hope for a good resolution for these characters. I especially liked Thomas’ character and the way he handled things. The author did a very good job of showing the type of man that Thomas had grown into.

Love’s Winter Hope was such a heartwarming story and a great additon to the Eagle Harbor series. I believe that someone could read this book without having read the others in the series and be able to follow the main storyline just fine. However, I personally am glad to have read the other books in the series, as the returning characters felt like friends that I got to catch up with once more.

Love’s Winter Hope is a story not to be missed. It delves deeply into the fears and struggles of a married couple who have lost their way and need a fresh start with the help of the Lord.

I've fallen in love with the Eagle Harbor series! I appreciate the strong characters that endure a harsh landscape and trying circumstances, turning to their faith and each other. Jessalyn is a good friend to the other women in the community and has built a successful business on her own while raising young children. She has a difficult time accepting Thomas when he returns, even though it was someone else's actions that prevented them from communicating. It takes a lot for Thomas to regain her acceptance and trust, and she worries constantly over the future. I admired that Thomas led his family with gentleness and relied on the Lord for guidance when he struggled with patience. There is an element of suspense with a series of robberies and shady men lurking around, and part of the story is told from Isaac's perspective as the sheriff, also providing a lead-in for his story in the next book. I'm really looking forward to reading more!

Marriages are not always lovey-dovey, kisses and hugs. There are real struggles in marriages. And that is the case in Love’s Winter Hope. It is refreshing to read a story about a couple who struggle with marital problems, including the parenting aspect of it. Add to the mix of this awesome story of marriage, this is a stirring mystery in Eagle Harbor! Someone is doing something. Can you figure it out by the end of the book, or be puzzled?

Jessalynn and Thomas have been separated for five years. Jessalynn didn’t know if he was dead, alive, or he just left her. She did what she needed to do to survive and raise her two daughters.

Thomas shows up out of the blue! Immediately wanting to insert himself back to his and his children’s lives. But, Jessalynn is not having it.

Jessalynn has to learn to trust and forgive Thomas. And both of them need to see that the other has changed in the span of five years. With God’s help these two will overcome and forgive the obstacles that are blocking their path towards a fulfilling and happy future. With each other and as parents to their daughters.

I completely understand Jessalynn’s feelings as a single mom. Before I married my husband (July will be nine years!), I was single mom for many years. It is not an easy task raising your children alone. But, you will do what it takes and do it well in order to raise them the way God wants you too.

The Eagle Harbor series is a wonderful and delightful read! If you haven’t read the other books, I highly recommend you do so! Each book is just as well-written as this one. Naomi writes outstanding books and it shows in her characters!

This is the fifth book in the Eagle Harbor series. I have enjoyed each installment and read them as they come out, even though each can be read as a standalone. The continuing story in a familiar place with characters both new and known keeps drawing me back and I relish checking in to one of my favorite fictional worlds each time I pick up a new one.

This novel focuses primarily on Thomas and Jessalyn. His return after five years poses difficulties rather than a cheerful reunion, but it isn't long before the reader begins to understand it is a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications that led to the length of time apart. There is still much to work out, however, and both characters are sympathetic given the circumstances.

Forgiveness is a weighty theme in this book. There is so much hurt to go around and frustration at trying to make things right even as the other person tosses hurdle after hurdle in the way of reconciliation. But in the difficult conversations where we aren't sure that the family will be reunited, even then a thread of grace runs through with each acknowledging their own mistakes and accepting responsibility.

The characters are all too realistic, though, and the temptation to press a momentary advantage or a flat refusal to consider alternative plans sends them back to the beginning several times. There are also lingering trust issues. But even in the serious and difficult scenes of a couple working their way back to each other, moments of humor add a little levity to keep things from becoming too heavy, and the continuing theme of hope keeps the mood from getting too dark.

I enjoy the historical detail and the opportunity to visit Eagle Harbor again. The larger cast of characters continue to make cameos in Eagle Harbor, and my favorite ongoing thread is the tentative steps the Cummings brothers take toward each other. I would highly recommend this book to those who like historical romance, starting at the beginning if possible for maximum enjoyment. I eagerly await the next novel in the series!

I received a free copy of this book from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all of the opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

Love’s Winter Hope ( Eagle Harbor #5 )
By: Naomi Rawlings
Love’s Winter Hope is book five in Eagle Harbor Series. I have enjoyed all of the Eagle Harbor books and this one is a great addition to the wonderful series. Rawlings has done a great job bringing all her characters to life. This is Jessalyn and Thomas’s story. After five years has Jessalyn given up hope of her husband , Thomas, being alive. She has made a life for her and her three daughters in Eagle Harbor working as a seamstress. This story is about love , lost, forgiveness, and second chances. Is Thomas dead or alive? Jessalyn would like to know one way or another so she can get on with her life. I really enjoyed this story and at times I had tears in my eyes.
Was given a complementary copy of this book , but was not told that I had to give a positive review.

Love's Winter Hope is a story of determination and dedication. How would you feel if your spouse disappeared for 5 years with no word to you or the family? Jessalyn has made a life for herself and her children, only to find that her husband is truly alive after all these years. The author tells a story that shows how misunderstandings and deceptions can be forgiven and trust can be found once again. A wonderful, touching love story. I enjoyed this story very much. I was given a copy of this story by the author and this is my personal honest opinion.

Welcome back to Eagle Harbor! Love's Winter Hope is a wonderful book of forgiveness and reconciliation. Jessalyn and Thomas' story of second chances after misunderstandings and others coming between them. Add to this winter weather, a fire and three young daughters to make a great read. And it's always great to to see your friends from previous books and see what they are up to. I received a copy of this book from the author for my honest review.

I have enjoyed every Eagle Harbor book written and couldn't wait for Jessalyn's story. And it did not disappoint! There is a new hero to admire. And Jessalyn had so much to go through. Thomas and she were very relatable to people even in real life about marriage. I think it was a well written book that is not just an entertaining book, but a book that will help emulate growth and forgiveness for not just a marriage, but friendships. It shows kindness to your neighbor during hard times. Each book keeps getting better and better! Thomas and Jessalyn both have much to discover about themselves before they can begin to think about working on being a married couple if that's what they want to do. And by doing that first is the only way they can truly decide what to do going forward with each other. We also get glimpses into the lives of other favorites from Eagle Harbor!

EXCEPT THE LORD BUILD THE HOUSE, THEY LABOUR IN VAIN THAT BUILD IT

The fifth story in the Eagle Harbor series can read as a standalone, and even better as part of the series. As with this series, each story has people from previous books and adding new ones as the saga continues. This is a clean Christian based historical that has imperfect people, with human emotions, mistakes, and redemption. Each story has moral lessons of seeking God’s will, learning to trust and accept God’s guidance. Just be aware, that once you start reading, you don’t want to put it down, the story will keep you captivated as the tale unfolds.

Jessalyn Dowrick and her three daughters have been residents of Eagle Harbor for years. Jessalyn is a seamstress and has a shop in her home, not only making new garments, but constantly taking in mending for the sailors, loggers, and miners. She can share some of the mending workload with a few other women in town who also need an income. Her dream is to move back to Chicago and one day start a sewing factory to employee women and pay a decent wage.

Thomas Dowrick left Eagle Harbor over five years ago to try and make a better living for his family, and after going to California, settled in Deadwood, South Dakota. For years he has been sending letters and money to his wife in Chicago, the bank drafts are cashed, but no letters are returned until about six months ago when he starts getting his letters and band drafts back. Now it is time to find his wife and daughters, and that takes him back to Eagle Harbor, Michigan.

The plot will have a couple reunite after more than five years. Jessalyn is bitter and resents that Thomas left her and their daughters to fend for themselves. If it weren’t for some of the caring neighbors in town, they might not have survived. Now she has a business, and he wants her to give up her plans and dreams and move to Deadwood. There is so much angst, anger, bitterness, and miscommunication between them, and it will take friends, and a fire will help to pull these two back together. With winter upon the town, Thomas is staying and hopes to find forgiveness and hopefully a future with his family. “The question was, were they both too set in their ways to change things ten years into their marriage? Or was there time left to start anew?”

The story will have unsolved crimes of burglaries, fires, and life and death situations that will keep the new Sheriff Isaac, and his unpaid deputy, Thomas busy. When a fire nearly claims the life of Jessalyn and their daughters, it is a wake-up call for them about what is important in life. “What was that Bible verse about the length of a person’s life? Something about how it was a vapor that appeared for a little while and then vanished.” “God had to work harder that He should have to bring me back.”

Love's Winter Hope by Naomi Rawlings is a delightful historical romance. It is book five in the fabulous Eagle Harbor series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The novel deals with many themes including that of restoration. Restoration happens not only in buildings but in people too. God can restore the years the locusts have eaten. Buildings and people need firm foundations. We need to build our lives on Jesus.
The novel explores treasure. Where our treasure is, there is our heart. Treasure is not to be found in things but people - relationships. We need to build up treasure that will last. "She'd have put more effort into the things that truly mattered." A crisis has a way of focusing our attention.
Money is important. It brings choice. When money is our focus, we have our values wrong. "I was so focused on the size of our savings."
Too often people think money is the answer. "I was too focused on money... believe that having more... would solve our arguments and problems." If you believe that money is the answer, you are asking the wrong question. The answer is always having lives grounded in Jesus.
The novel deals with guilt and loss. "How could his brother laugh and eat pie... with Pa gone?" This loss happened before the series began but the repercussions have been felt down the books. The past is gone. We cannot alter it. We need to deal with our guilt and forgive ourselves. Guilt is a heavy burden that we were never meant to carry. It will always weigh us down. We need to give it to God and let Him heal us.
Love's Winter Hope is a pure delight. It is wonderful to return to Eagle Harbor, a familiar setting with old friends. There is a fabulous community feel to the novel which encompasses the reader.
With Naomi Rawlings wonderful descriptions, the landscape really comes alive for the reader. I could 'see' the town and its inhabitants, the harbour and the roaring seas, the wooden cabins.
Eagle Harbor is a marvellous series... with the sixth and final book due out in February 2018, why not grab yourself books one to five and start reading a fabulous new series now?
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

“Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” Psalm 127:1
After 5 years of silence from her husband, Thomas, Jessalyn Dowrick has given up hope that he would ever return. She has made a life for herself and her three daughters in Eagle Harbor, Michigan, working as the town seamstress. When her oldest daughter comes to her in the middle of a blizzard complaining of yet another earache, she bundles her girls up and heads for the doctor’s office. On their arrival, they discover a waiting room packed with shivering men – an indication that there has been another shipwreck. As they settle in to wait for the doctor, the man who steps out of the examination room, insisting he’s fine, stuns her. He looks like Thomas, sounds like Thomas, has Thomas’ height but it can’t be him, can it? If Thomas isn’t dead, why hasn’t she heard from him in 5 years?
Thomas Dowrick left 5 years ago to find a way to provide for his wife and two daughters. He never expected to be away from them so long and had been sending monthly letters begging his wife to join him in Deadwood, South Dakota. Until recently, he thought she was simply mad at him for leaving. He had no idea that his letters and checks never made it to her. Braving Lake Superior on the last ship out before they closed the shipping lanes, Thomas was unprepared to be shipwrecked. Rescued by Elijah Cummings’ crew, Thomas is thrilled to learn that his search for his family can end in Eagle Harbor but when he walks out of the doctor’s exam room he’s unprepared for the sight of his wife with not 2 but 3 daughters. And, the wife he is so excited to see is anything BUT excited to see him.
Can he make her see that her place is with him? How can he overcome 5 years of what she sees as neglect to build a marriage? Will Jessalyn ever look at him again with trust in her eyes?
This story had me wanting to shake some sense into Jessalyn – often. It could be that I sympathized with Thomas a little too much but I loved his willingness to do whatever he needed to in order to earn his wife’s trust and forgiveness. Jessalyn, on the other hand, had gotten so used to going it alone that she didn’t want to even share “her” daughters, let alone “her” life, with her husband. As events in Eagle Harbor heat up, throwing the pair together, can they rediscover the love that brought them together in the first place? Romance readers, historical readers and even mystery/suspense readers will find something to enjoy in Naomi Rawlings’ latest book, “Love’s Winter Hope.” This series just keeps getting better!

Another wonderful book in the Eagle Harbor Series. I loved this story so much. I loved the characters and struggled through the problems with them. It was like I was right there in their shoes. This story had a little suspense in addition to Historical and Romance. The inspirational themes of Second Chance, Trust and Forgiveness were woven well into the story. This is a book and series I will want to read again.

Eagle Harbor's rescue team once again saves the life of a former resident who nearly drowns. After a five year absence from his family, his wife is not open to welcoming him with open arms, and with good reason.

As in previous novels in this series, past characters are included which brings continuity regarding the characters who reside in Eagle Harbor. I love that about this series. I enjoy reading about the development of past characters and their families as another focus family is featured each time. Character development is very well done, with realistic personalities and events revealed. The locale is portrayed in vivid descriptions, placing the reader into the spirit of life in the upper peninsula of Michigan, along the shores of Lake Superior.

I highly recommend this most recent novel in this series. Enjoy!

For some reason, this was the book in this series I was looking forward to the least. To my surprise, I enjoyed it just as much as the other books in the series. I think this is the first book I have read when the main couple is already married and the focus is on rebuilding their marriage. Naomi did a great job of depicting Thomas and Jessalyn’s problems realistically and seeing them come back together through forgiveness and self sacrifice was a joy to read.

I loved Love's Winter Hope, the fifth book in the series Eagle Harbor.
It was so refreshing to read a book about a married couple who had problems in their marriage. A five year separation because of misunderstandings and not trying hard enough to find each other. Learning to pray together and letting God help them was beautiful.

From the beginning Jessalyn and Thomas story was like so many marriages. But the author Naomi Rawlings help the reader see and feel how two people can misunderstand what the other has said. You feel the hurt, betrayal and how to trust again.

Thomas has been my favorite hero in this series so far. He understands his mistakes and wants Jessalyn to forgive and makes their marriage work. Jessalyn has no trust in Thomas! Thomas is so patient and loving and you wonder if Jessalyn can see how he is so different from five years before.

Also there's a big mystery going on around town and I am always wondering you is doing all the mean things that's happening. If you like mystery then you'll like this book.

If you like Christian Fiction you'll really like Love's Winter Hope. You'll fall in love with these characters and learn about patience and with the Trust in the Lord anything is possible.

I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required and all thoughts expressed are entirely mine.

This book was also called "The Christmas Hope” again in this book the characters begin to mature, advance, making you look forward to the next book. I thought that Josslyn took a little too long to allow Thomas back into her life. It seemed to drag on a little too long. But then I really enjoyed the mystery that was thrown into this book as well. I thought I knew throughout this book who the culprit was but surprisingly the story took twists and turn as God’s story unfolds. I really enjoyed the hidden message of the book and reread those parts over again as it pertains to life now! Another great read from the 1880’s.

What would you do if you thought your husband abandoned you & your three girls five years ago? And then one day, he shows up? You’ll find the answers to those questions in this book.

Welcome back to Eagle Harbor Michigan with the latest novel! Once again, we’re plunked in the middle of a wintry storm at sea, which in turn closes the harbor for the season. With Thomas stuck in town and wanting to start over with his wife & children, there’s going to be many obstacles to overcome. So many misunderstandings come to light and Jessalyn must learn to trust again, not only her husband but God. I enjoyed the journey these two took to rebuild a marriage into a strong foundation once again. There are many layers to this story and I loved seeing every one of them unfold. I quickly connected to the characters and the story drew me in from the beginning. I also loved revisiting the town of Eagle Harbor and the many people I’d already met from previous books. This author has a way of weaving a story that will tug at your heart and bring resolution to a satisfying conclusion. A story of forgiveness, restoration, second chances and rebuilding a marriage & family God created! I can’t wait for the next story which features Isaac & Aileen.

I've been very interested in reading this story since the first time I met Jessalynn in Love's Unfading Light, book one, and learned of her situation. Let me tell ya', it did not disappoint. I absolutely loved it!

There's a lot of misunderstanding, miscommunication, and many years of hurt for Jessalynn and her recently returned husband, Thomas, to try and overcome. I didn't know what to expect from Thomas. I couldn't imagine what kind of guy would leave his wife and kids and not send any word for five years. It took a little bit for him to grow on me, but, as they say, there's two sides to every story, and it wasn't long before I came to really like him. I really felt for both of them. Forgiveness isn't easy, but sometimes trusting again is even harder. I was rooting for them and enjoyed watching them work through some tough issues.

I was so happy to be back in Eagle Harbor and to catch up with 'old friends'. I've loved every single one of the books in this series. If you're a fan of historical romance, don't miss out on this wonderful series! I can't wait to read Isaac and Aileen's story in book six, Love's Bright Tomorrow.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and comments are my own opinion.

Love’s Winter Hope features another cozy plot with two new and interesting protagonists who must work through past failures, mistakes, and malicious connivers. Favorite characters from previous Eagle Harbor titles weave in and out of this tale providing interesting depth and the seeds of love stories to come. The theme of forgiveness, reconciliation, and trust in God to build the house also make Love’s Winter Hope an inspirational and uplifting read.

Five years ago, Jessalyn’s husband left her to make his fortune in California. After countless attempts to contact him, she assumed the worst and eked out a living for herself and their three young daughters by sewing for miners in Eagle Harbor’s copper country. Through ingenuity and diligence she soon developed a dress cliental and saved enough money to move to Chicago and open a shop with dreams of much more—and without the need for any man. But her plans turn upside down when in the winter of 1883, her supposedly dead husband returns to town with considerable means and a determination for reconciliation. But how can Jessalyn trust that Thomas will stick by her in the future after abandoning her for five years?

Meet the Town of Safe Harbour in this series by Naomi Rawlings. Naomi Rawlings bring her characters to life. Share the romance, suspense, fear, pain, love, faith, heart aches, and blessings of Mac, Tressa, Elijah, Victoria, Gilbert, Rebekah, Seth, Lindsey, Thomas, Jessalyn, Isaac, and Aileen. All of these characters can be met in Safe Harbour -but first you have to pick up a book and start your journey and visit there. I could not put them down. I binge read through the series. I used my tablet so I could read in bed at night without disturbing my husband. By the time I finished the series I felt like I was part of the SAFE HARBOUR family. Now I am planning a trip to the actual town. Hopefully, I can go this summer. Now I am looking forward to the new Texas Promise series started by a move of one of the SAFE HARBOUR residents. I truly hope there is a lot of visiting back and forth!

I did not blame Jessalyn for her reaction at seeing her long, lost husband. It would have been hard to be alone as long as she was with three children to raise and little money. It would take Thomas a lot of begging for me to have even wanted to talk to him. This made me laugh and cry. This had a great story to it. I look forward to more books by Naomi Rawlings. I received this ebook from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

I have had this series on my list to read for awhile, but for some reason, book #5 caught my eye. Most of the time, I like to read series in order, but occasionally I go with what gets me hooked. This one got me hooked and now I am going to go back and read the others in the series that I own.

I think because it was about a married couple, that intrigued me. The storyline was well done and I read until my eyes were gritty.

Jessalyn has spent the last five years building a business and recovering from the abandonment of her husband. She has three little girls to raise, as well. Thomas has spent the last five years building a business that he hopes will build a life for his family when he returns for them. Now he has returned for them and needs to prove he will never leave again. How can this work? Another great story from Naomi Rawlings.

Loves Christmas Hope

This is the story of a young woman who had her own shop where she had women working making the dresses she designed. Her dream was to have a shop with women who needed work to sew her designs and help her make her dream a reality. Mixed in with this dream was a man who had left her and then came back but he was injured and had to take a job with no pay till he could get her to move back in with him. Knowing how Jessalyn struggled with Thomas gone, His return met with skepticism. Glad the sheriff had wisdom to let Thomas move in with him next door to Jessalyn. I love that Thomas was in the right place to save her twice. And that he thought he had been providing for his family while he was away and didn’t abandon them as we first thought.
