Though Amy Carmichael got into quite a few well-intentioned mishaps as a child, her passion and zeal and her love for the Lord took her to the land of India, where she preached the gospel and rescued children from temple prostitution. This is the first biography of the esteemed missionary to be written for children.
5 stars. My initial reaction after reading this was, “I didn’t expect to cry this much.”
I stumbled across some writings of Amy Carmichael years ago as a kid, but never really heard much about her until I was older. Even then, I only had a basic idea of who she was, so this biography was quite informative to me. It’s written more for a juvenile audience and at the beginning seemed a bit abrupt and didactic, but eventually I got so invested I couldn’t put the book down.
What I loved about this biography was that unlike so many, it wasn’t about Amy Carmichael, it was about how the Lord used Amy Carmichael. While I certainly admire her, I didn’t come away with awe at her, but at her God. Everything just pointed back to Him in marvellous ways—hence the tears as I rejoiced over and over at His goodness! Three things struck me most: how Amy’s prayer for blue eyes was refused, because she needed brown eyes; how she worked so hard not to dress or act in a way that distracted people from the Gospel message; and her absolute faith & surrender, especially at the end. What a beautiful testimony…
I love this book! I find it especially wonderful that anyone can read it. Rebecca Davis did an awesome job of telling Amy's story without giving details that would frighten children. It's simple and easy to understand, yet very moving and inspirational.
With Daring Faith was a fascinating biography! I love the format it was written in. I learned so many things I didn't know about Amy Carmichael. She had such a loving and caring heart.
I first read this book when I was in fourth grade, and I was captivated. I still remember vivid details, like Amy as a child praying for blue eyes instead of brown. As a missionary, she darkened her skin and went into the temples to rescue Indian girls before they were sold into slavery. One of the Indian women who worked with her commented on the good fortune that, unlike many white people's, Amy Carmichael's eyes were not blue.
Little details like that are what brought this biography to life and endeared it to my heart. I reread it many times as a kid and highly recommend it.
I have encountered Amy Carmichael 3 times in the last 3 days in 3 different sermons. I know a little about her, but I assume that it is time for me to read more about her life. :)
My 7yo: That was nice. 🥰 I loved that Amy was able to help the children. She was very brave and she did not give up her trust in God. God wants all of us to trust Him. Amy was really nice. 🥰🥰💞 She had a lot of faith! She lived a very good life.
The Mama: What a very well written biography! I read this aloud to my 7yo. Chapters were a good length and dialog felt natural. The pacing was well done and there were only a couple chapters (13/14) that felt a bit heavy for my younger listener. (Target age group is 9-12.)
Amy Beatrice Carmichael grew up as the first born in a large family. When she was 12 years old, her parents sent her to a boarding school for girls. As a grad student Amy felt called to the mission field, and one of her close friends told her about a missionary couple he knew in China. She pursued that lead, and found that she loved it there. After just a few weeks of language school, she was out ministering to the women. After 2 years in China, Amy had to return to England due to her poor health. After regaining her strength, Amy wanted to return to the field, but was unable to because of her health problems. A missionary friend told her about the ministry in India and Amy felt lead to go there. On the trip to India, Amy got severely sick and stayed in bed for a while once she got to the foreign country. While she was sick, Amy felt very depressed and questioned God's will for her in this strange place. Once she returned to full strength though, Amy was eager to return to active ministry and she loved working with the women. Eventually, one of the temple children came up to "Amma" Amy and asked her to keep her away from the temple priests. Once Amy learned of the immense need in the temples, she abandoned the women's ministry and started rescuing children from the temples. That is Amy Beatrice Carmichael's story... one of daring faith!
Interesting biography about Amy Carmichael that we read in our homeschool Dialectic history studies. My daughter used this book to help prepare in portraying her in our history program.
I think this book was amazing. It made me laugh, cry, and really made me think more about my relationship with god. As a 12 year old, I recommend this book to everyone
Great story about Amy Carmichael's life. Well written for children as well as adults. I read every year with my 5th graders and they are always captivated by the events and are encouraged to think beyond their "world."
A must read. This book is such a heartfelt testimony. I highly enjoyed this selfless story about giving yourself to God and finding inner strength and worth.
