Welcome to Starry Hollow, where spells were made to be broken.
Ember Rose, descendant of the One True Witch and New Jersey transplant, is settling into her new life in Starry Hollow, along with her precocious daughter. It doesn't take long before Ember finds herself smack dab in the middle of another mystery. Someone is turning the town's most eligible bachelors into frogs, starting with her cousin Florian. Aunt Hyacinth insists that the newspaper investigate alongside Sheriff Nash because 'everybody knows werewolves track meat, not suspects.'
Can Ember manage to catch the culprit or will these young princes of Starry Hollow be trapped as frogs forever?
Annabel Chase is the author of urban fantasy and cozy mystery novels. She would love to live in a magical town where she can shop at Ready-to-Were for the the perfect outfit, flirt with hot angels and vampires, and cook gourmet meals without exerting any effort. I loved it!! I am enjoying all of Annabel Chase's works and this one is as good as they get. I read it in one sitting and I can't wait for the next one in the series. Ember Rose is fun and a breath of fresh air. I read a lot of deep dark mysteries and police procedurals and I need a fun break at times. This author is perfect for my needs. She gives us fast moving, intriguing and well written stories. I highly recommend all her works.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about Ember after the first book despite really enjoying the fun world and light read. She’s still too ‘something’ for me (reference scene where she visited the matchmaker with the sheriff) but I’ve decided to continue reading the books for now. Plus Alec and Nash - I’d like to see how that plays out.
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Artemis Haverford Aunt Hyacinth Ember Rose Sheriff Nash Alec Hale ---------------------------------- What happens? Bachleors are turning into Frogs in Starry Hollow. When Ember's cousin Florian turns into one during a family dinner Aunt Hyacinth decides the law isn't just fully up to the task and asks the local paper (which the family owns) to start investigating into why and who did it. Ember's quick thinking and instinct makes this mystery easy to solve for her! Final thoughts This is my favourite line ever "You seem to forget one thing, Ben," I said, and pointed the wand back at him. "I'm Ember Rose, first of her name. Daughter of Nathaniel and Lily. Descendant of the One True Witch. Plus, I’m from New Jersey. My badassery knows no bounds."
I cannot wait to see whose going to be her love interest. Its so tantalising. This book was really good but just so short! Would I read again?: Yes Would I read this author again?: Yes
Some of the bachelors from town were turning into frogs. They are the main players in town, unfortunately one is a Rose.
Florian is one of the first to be turned and at the dinner table too.
The hunt is on for the culprit.
Luckily for Sheriff Nash, Simon the butler at their home has a list of girlfriends. They put all the frogs' lists together and start to question the ladies.
All is not what it seems and when Alex, Ember's boss is turned it leads her to an unexpected answer.
This has some fantastic moments in the story that had me giggling more times then not. Joyous, fun, creative with wonderful characters, what more could I ask for. You get some more insight into the family, coven and life in Starry Hollow along with catching up with PP3 and Marley and a new addition to the characters.
I loved it, couldn't but it down, can't wait to dive back into Starry Hollow.
This is a review for the Starry Hollow Witchs books 1 through 6, as I read them all one ofter the other so feel a series review is in place.
This series had a different feel to the Spellbound books. For a start Starry Hollow takes it's place in the world at large and time has continued to move forwards. The magic appears to be different dependant on the users and has a slightly different feel to it. Ember (like Emma in Spellbound) does arrive though from the human world and finds out she is a witch from a rather special family. There she discovers a matriarchal aunt, cousins, nieces and nephews and a whole cast of weird and wonderful townsfolk, including some rather handsome new suitors. Ember and her daughter discover the delights of a new world, along with solving some murder and mayhem on the side. The world is delightful and I recommend these books highly for a spot of light reading that will surely distract from the day to day of reality. Fun and engaging.
It's a fun and fast cosy read which is professionally written – that's the upside. The downside is that it has nothing new to offer, mostly because it sticks to a formula and also, because it is a cosy (which severely limits emotional and sexual development). Each book features a mystery – this time bachelors are being turned into frogs – but, as I noted in my review of the first book in the series, the mystery plotline only really exists as a method to top and tail each book. Expertly written, it offers a quick and enjoyable read. It seems to me that it is a pity that Annabel Chase doesn't seem to be too much bothered with writing a better book – than again, when it sells, it sells! Don't get me wrong, 'Magic & Mystery' is a fine read if you are in the humour, my only regret is that the author has pulled back, deliberately, from what could have been a darker, and better, book.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
Fantastic Siri. This author writes several series in the same magical world. One of them is this one the story hello series. Another is the spellbound Siri’s. Another is spell slayers academy in which that one is similar to Harry Potter as it is a magical university. These books are as entertaining as it gets. I put them right up underneath Perry Potter books. Sorry for any grammatical errors. I use voiceover with Siri to dictate as I am blind. I read a lot of books and in this genre these are becoming some of my favorite. You will not be disappointed. So far I have immensely enjoyed every book from this author I have read. Check them out
This is the second book in the series and the second one I really like. One thing I learned was a new word: frogification. Very basically, some guys in the town end up being turned into frogs. It seems to be spontaneous. One frog goes missing (kind of Marley's fault) and no one knows if the frog epidemic will continue or how to stop it.
Ember's co worker at the paper is Bentley and he seems to hate her. The boss is no too bad but she thinks he's cute when he turns into a frog with fangs.
Ember is getting with the swing of things at Starry Hollow, and keeps learning more and more by just being around the new community, Marly and her are making great starts with the tutelage, they are receiving. Book’s two mystery is one that is affecting bachelors of the town in a most unusual way. Not to worry Nash and Ember are on the case, or is it Ember and Alex or just Ember? Are the journalists or the Sheriff going to figure it out first? Witty and fun, you must read it to find out.
Amusing with several laugh out loud moments. The town's most eligible bachelors are being turned into frogs. The love them and leave them bachelors have made a name for themselves in Starry Hollow and someone is out for revenge. Ember Rose is on the case, as a journalist and a friend. She's trying to uncover the trust, as she adjusts to living a life as a witch. Its a fun read, with likable characters.
Ember Rose, Marley, Alec, and the Sheriff are back in this amusing mystery. Someone is turning men into frogs in Starry Hollow. Alec assigns Ember to investigate for the paper and the sheriff decides to have to come with him so they can interview people together. While this is going on, Ember is being taught how to use her magic. A most fun read with a cast of wonderful characters that I'm looking forward to reading about in future books in this series. Delightful.
This book is a good introduction to the witches of Starry Hollow. However, there are more than just witches. There are vampires and werewolves. Ember is living among humans and doesn't know she's a witch until she accidentally makes it rain. Later, her cousins show up and teleport her to the place of her birth. She finds out quite a lot about herself and her parents during the first book. I'm excited to read the next books in the series.
I enjoyed this book because I like witches and magic. I enjoyed the way characters were very down to earth and the way they help those who are brought into situations that they had no idea what was going on. I think that the way that Ember was brought into the magical world would have made me a little uneasy but she handled it very well. I am looking forward to the next book.
Ember Rose is working at Vox Populi the Starry Hollow newspaper owned by her aunt Hyacinth. Having solved the mystery of the death of the Maiden she's pushed into the next investigation when her cousin Florian is turned into a frog at a family meal.
As the eligible bachelor's of Starry Hollow all seem to be falling under the same spell it's a race to find the guilty party and reverse it before they get stuck in frog form.
Ember Rose is slowly embracing her new life. After years of thinking she was human, she’s discovered that she’s a witch. Her cousin, Florian, and a number of the town’s eligible bachelors, have been turned into frogs. Will Ember be able to catch the nefarious spell caster before they claim another victim? Buy the book and find out. Another magical mystery read by Ms Chase; a must read!
This second book is as good as the first as Ember settles into her new home in magical Starry Hollow. She's picking up new witchy skills, learning a new job and hot on the trail of a magical mystery. I like this series better than than the other set in this world, though if you like this one, I'm sure you will like it too.
I just love Ember. She has so much spunk!!! The mystery is great and I didn't figure it out I til the end, which I love. Ember has to find out who is turning bachelor's into frogs, including her cousin Florian. She makes some new friends as well. I would love to see her with the sheriff!!
Starry Hollow, a place so magical that you can have people turn into frogs and have ghosts as butlers. When bachelors start turning into frogs Ember is put on the case for the paper. In looking into the case, she meets some interesting new people.
Need to read to find out how, who, and why these men become frogs.
I loved this book as much as I liked the first one I like that Ember is starting to get her magic on. Who doesn't love a great mystery with lots of magic? Everyone does!!! I never saw it coming, who would have thought... No spoilers go read it yourself!!! You will fall in love
While there is no murder in this one, there is still a mystery. Someone is turning the town's most eligible bachelors into frogs. Including Ember's new boss, Alec Hale. And no kiss from a princess will be changing them back anytime soon. Ember works with Sheriff Nash to find out who the guilty party is. Another well told story, and a quick fun read.
Ember's cousin Florian suddenly turns into a frog during dinner, and they need to find out who cast the spell and how, in order to turn him back. The sheriff lets Ember tag along because she will talk to the same people anyway. Fun watching them get little digs in at each other for entertainment.
Such a fun and witty read! I love the characters - a single mom from Jersey who has just learned she's a witch, a ten year old daughter who is wise beyond her years and two hot paranormal love interests - how can you go wrong? and I want to go to the Wish Market - the author has a great imagination!
Someone has turn Starry Hollow's most eligible bachelors into frogs. When Embers own cousin is turned into a frog her aunt wants her on the case. Sheriff Nash is willing to take Ember along for interviews of the women each guy has dated lately and they find that list to be long.
A magical town hidden next to the ocean. A rich and powerful family of witches taking care of you. Sounds like heaven to me. Might have to give the town a drive by and stop in for a magical cocktail or two. Annabel Chase writes a wonderful, relaxing, and interesting series. Looking forward to more.
This has quickly become one of my favorite series! The characters are deep, easy to relate to, and become more and more interesting with each book! I love the way this author writes her mysteries, they keep me turning the pages. You will not regret picking this book up unless you start it in the evening and have to work the next day!
This is another winner. I love this Author as she writes great paranormal characters in every book. I highly recommend all her books and different series. Every book has a great mystery and wonderful characters and she has a great imagination. Diana Romano
