The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi: My Journey into the Heart of Scriptural Faith and the Land Where It All Began

Rate this book
An instant New York Times bestseller!

As a lifelong student of Scripture, Kathie Lee Gifford has always desired a deeper understanding of God’s Word and a deeper knowledge of God Himself. But it wasn’t until she began studying the biblical texts in their original Hebrew and Greek—along with actually hiking the ancient paths of Israel—that she found the fulfillment of those desires.

Now you can walk with Kathie on a journey through the spiritual foundations of her faith:

The Rock (Jesus Christ): Hear directly from Kathie about her life-changing and ever-deepening connection with Jesus, the Lover of her soul.

The Road (Israel): Explore dozens of ancient landmarks and historical sites from Israel, the promised land of God’s covenant.

The Rabbi (God’s Word): Go beyond a “Sunday school” approach to the Bible by digging into the original languages and deeper meanings of the Holy Scriptures.
As you journey through The Rock, The Road, and The Rabbi, you’ll also find additional content from Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel throughout the book. Jason’s insight into the Hebrew language, culture, and heritage will open your eyes to the Bible like never before.

Come! Begin your journey toward a deeper faith through The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi.

The Bible Is Not an Ancient, Dead Book

THE ROCK THE ROAD AND THE RABBI is a unique book. At first, I wondered if it would be all that interesting, but it is! Whilst reading this book, I kept on thinking, “Hey, I want to go on that tour!”

The reason that Kathie Lee Gifford wrote this book, is that it goes to the heart of what she values most. This land is the land of the Gospel: “I believe with all my soul that the answer to every question any person will ever ask is hidden in that land and in the Word of God.”

The author takes the reader to many famous Biblical places. Then, with the help of two Bible experts, Rabbi Jason Sobel and Ray Vander Laan, she explains what happened here in Biblical times. The two theologians do a good job of setting the stage, and explaining the meaning of the Biblical passage.

In my favorite chapter, we visit the Valley of Elah, where David killed Goliath. Here, the author and her late husband each pick up a stone. The question for them is, “What is your stone? What is your gift? What is the one thing that you can do that no one else can do but you?”

And that’s how the book works. We visit the scenes of the Bible, we get an expert explanation of the passage, and also a practical lesson.

In visiting the places where Jesus lived, the guides discuss how people lived at that time I was flabbergasted to hear that a more accurate translation of Jesus’ occupation was “stone mason,” not carpenter! This fits the Bible narrative well, since “Jesus is the promised master craftsman and architect of creation who brings order out of chaos and shalom to our lives.”

The author sums up her book with this challenging word of encouragement: “I encourage you to find your stone and throw it at the chaos of this world. Serve the living God and find your purpose in Him.”

Nicely said! When does the next tour leave?

Yikes. In no way was this book what I expected (or wanted). The fault is on me because I thought this book was going to be more of a self-discovery/self-help book but in reality, it was filled with dense biblical knowledge.

This is a relatively small book with it being less than 200 pages (excluding the various appendixes, acknowledgments, and letters of praise) however; it's filled with some very dry content. It felt like it took me ages to get through this book and I literally fell asleep not one, not two, but three times while reading. It's a very scripture heavy book and if you are new or are a more casual reader of scripture, this book may be difficult for you. I seriously would really only recommend this book to those that have a deep knowledge and understanding of the Bible because it's not an easy book to understand.

As well, I feel like to really understand this book the reader essentially has to have visited Israel to be able to visualize or understand the locations that are mentioned. Well, I myself have never been to Israel and I know of many that are in that same category.

Again, I think the majority of my issues that stem from this book is the fact that I expected a totally different kind of book. But I do have to say that I think there will be others like me who unknowingly pick this book up and are left disappointed.

Our Bible Study group led by Sharon Longley studied THE ROCK, THE ROAD AND THE RABBI over six weeks. We watched the video, read scripture and discussed the video, book and scriptures.
This was enlightening and educational for me. Although I knew that there were many predictions in the Old Testament that were fulfilled by the birth of Jesus, it was wonderful to see and hear the Rabbi make references and quote the scriptures and explain his interpretation of them.
I highly recommend this book and video to those who wish to learn more about Jesus and God and the Holy Spirit. 5 stars

Audiobook (narrated by Kathy Lee Gifford)
I loved this book, especially since I’ve been studying about so many of these sites in preparation for my own trip to the Holy Land. Reading this book just made me all the more eager for my visit.

I didn’t love the narration by the author. It felt overacted. I understand her emotions as she shared these stories, but still, her voice was off-putting at times because it felt overdone. I would have enjoyed the book even more if I'd read it in print instead of listening to the audio version.

"The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi" is a travelogue of sorts about the places Kathie Lee Gifford saw and the insights she learned while on various tours of Israel. These insights come from Ray Vander Laan's tours as well as the Rock and Road tours lead by a student of Ray's, Rod Van Solkema. Since you can get Ray Vander Laan's teachings through his video series and see the actual sites (rather than simply read brief descriptions of them), I'd recommend watching those videos over reading this book.

There were also sections by Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel, but they often focused on speculative ideas, like numerology. For example, "According to some Jewish mystics, the letter hei is connected to the divine breath of God that releases His creative power and potential... Now it should make more sense why David picked up five stones. David needed the supernatural power that comes with a divine breath in order to punish Goliath, the wicked blasphemer, to restore honor to the divine name, and to bring shalom to the chaos. This is what letter hei--the fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet and the number five--represent in Hebrew thought." What bothered me was that he presented his speculative ideas like they were solidly true rather than a cool idea, but we can't be sure was the actual motive, really happened, or was an intended connection. Some of his ideas were less speculative and others are commonly accepted connections, but they were all presented the same.

Anyway, each chapter focused on a specific site and on an event that happened there. The author either summarized the event or quoted the verses from the Bible. She provided some historical or basic Bible background information to the event, then provided a brief spiritual lesson. While much of this book had good information, there are many excellent books that provide biblical background insights which contain less speculation.

I received a free ebook review copy from the publisher through BookLook.

I have been feeling grumpy and down and this was the best book for me, because it took the focus off myself and put it on the Lord. It was easy to read and not ever boring or long winded.
I may never get to walk the land where Jesus was born and that is ok by me, but what I can do is read other people stories about their journey in Israel. This book talks about the land of Israel, shows photos of where Jesus walked and it also tells us about people that Jesus healed and talked to, it also takes us deeper into God's words and timing in the things that happened to Jesus. The Christian Rabbi explains the deeper Jewish meaning behind words and places and takes us into a greater understanding of the why of things that happened the way they did for Jesus.
When I read the Bible I miss out of things for lack of knowledge so books like this opens my eyes to see the what why and how and even some things that I had never thought of. I am sure I will be a life time learner of God's word and I find that exciting, because I do want a greater understanding so I can be more of a light in the world.
The Rock - Is Jesus
The Road - is Israel
The Rabbi - knows more of the history and meaning of the Hebrew language and he shines the light on those things, so we can have a greater understanding about the Lord.

Wow! At first, I was really hesitant about this book and even reading it, but once I dug into " The Rock, The Road and the Rabbi," I couldn't stop reading. This book will encourage you as she takes you on the journey of a life-time searching the scriptures and going to the place where Jesus lived. This book will inspire you to want to know God more intimately and deepen your relationship. Kathy does a fantastic job of doing her homework by presenting Biblical truth that has often been overlooked. This book is extraordinary. Overall, I enjoyed this book tremendously and cannot say enough good things about it. While I was skeptical at first, as I read the pages and they unfolded, my skepticism went away and I fell more in love with God.

This book, without a doubt, has made the biggest impact on my faith and my spiritual journey in knowing Jesus better. It is also one of the best books I've read in a very long time!

Kathy Lee shares how the Lord called her to put Him first. This meant getting up even earlier than she usually did, which was early, since she does an early morning program on television. She was obedient to God's calling and shares the impact this has had in her life.

She also shares about her journey's to Israel and how these visits have impacted her faith in profound ways. She also shares about her husband, Frank, and how going to Israel made such a difference in his faith - from a religion to a relationship with Jesus. This story really touched my heart and I always love hearing stories of when people truly come to know Jesus.

More than these stories, however, are the teachings in this book! I had my highlighter out and my pen and made so many notes and highlights in this book - there's barely any paper showing through! I learned so much about the Word of God and it has given me such a hunger for His Word! It has given me a spark to my faith again and for that I am so thankful.

In my opinion, this is a must-read book for everyone! I cannot even convey how much this book has meant in my life for directing me into my Bible and into prayer time. I have been studying the Greek and Hebrew meanings of words because through Kathy Lee's book, I have come to understand how important it is to know the true meanings of each and everything.

This book will stay at hand for reading again and again because there is so much in this book, I just couldn't truly get everything out of it in the first reading. It is packed full of gem after gem of information not only from Kathy Lee but from her co-author, Rabbi Jason Sobel, I love this book and I think you will, too! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

The Rock, the Road, and The Rabbi by Kathie Lee Gifford, (with Rabbi Sobel).

I have so many feelings about this book it's difficult to know where to begin and how much to actually say. This was listened to on CD but I will be checking out the book just to keep up with all the Bible verses. The beginning was Kathy Lee being truthful about herself as a believer and represented herself as such and nothing more. I appreciated that. I did find it difficult to listen to her speak since she started out speaking in a normal tone that often ended in a whisper. Most of her presentation I could accept. She went off the track when comparing Caesar's son and the Roman's belief in his divinity to that of the Lord. I found that comparison unacceptable and really had no place in this book.
I've been watching and listening to Rabbi Sobel on You Tube for some time. The Torah is especially important to me and I've been following the Parashat portions in the Torah by reading the Bible on my own which enables me to develop my relationship with Him. Again I appreciated most of the insight from Rabbi Sobel, but there were a few comparisons I felt were pushing his thoughts. As long as it could be found in the bible I was ok with most of it.
I am Bible centered in my life and have always deeply believed in God and His word since I was a child. It's because of that natural bond that I received my atonement from the Promised Messiah 53 years ago. My searching began with God and continues with Him revealed in the Messiah.
My thought is that God may use parts of this book to reach a searching soul and fill their heart with his love and a glimpse into eternity.

I can't say that I'm a Kathie Lee Gifford fan but I am definitely a fan of Jesus. I liked this one and what a great title. I liked the way the author brought her message and her faith together. This felt well written, cohesive and thankfully not long winded or full of repetition. It was a positive look into her faith. I liked this one so much I downloaded a few more of her books from my local library....I guess I should keep my fingers crossed that I will like those too.

Definitely 4 stars for this one.

I began hearing good things about The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi, a few days after it released. To be honest, I was a little hesitant to believe them.
The whole “celebrity writes a Christian book” isn't my thing... suppose I am a bit cynical.

Anyway, I had no idea Mrs Gifford had been a lifelong Christian nor Bible student.

Upon finding this book, at the library, I decided to give it a try.
After all... if it stunk, I could return it... pronto!

It didn't!
In fact, I found it hard to put down.
(perhaps being on vacation had a little to do with it!)

There were many interesting points brought up by Mrs Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel throughout The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi.
It gave more insight to familiar topics and made you think twice.

I believe there's a bit of promotion to attract others to take The Rock, the Road and the Rabbi tour in the Holy Land, which was understandable. After all, when we are excited about something...
we want others to share in our excitement and experience. And salvation is a pretty big deal...

Though, I didn't feel urged to book a trip asap. : )

Overall, I would recommend giving this book a read.

I didn't finish this one, but have spent so much time with it, that I feel justified writing an opinion.
I really liked the deep sincerity and interest in the subject matter displayed by Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel. I thought I was going to really enjoy the book, but for me it just felt very disjointed. I think these were important learning moments for Giffored on an amazing trip she took too Israel. She is excited about numerical meanings of words that add a deeper understanding to scripture, the endurance of ancient locations and Rabbi Jason's teachings. It just didn't translate into a cohesive work. I wanted it too, but there are too many books for me to keep spending time on this one.
It really was a two star experience for me, but is bumped out of admiration for the endeavor to write about faith that I would feel for any one of any faith who is in a very commercial field, and also the belief that someone else might get more from this format than I did.

Interesting look into ancient Hebrew meanings of parts of the Bible and visits to locations/events in the Bible. Makes you think but without knowing Hebrew or having a Hebrew teacher not sure about some of her interpretations. Sure makes me want to travel to the Holy Lands someday!

Kathie Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason take you on a trip to Israel. You'll hear Gifford's 2012 journey with husband Frank and guide Ray Vander Laan. Gifford tells of her faith, impact of what land places had on her learning and reads scriptures all with a passionate voice. Rabbi Jason tells from a cultural, historical, and language background of scripture and place meaning. This also accompanies a Bible Study workbook and video.

An Insightful Look at Key Places in the Bible

Television personality Kathi Lee Gifford teams with Rabbi Jason Sobel to give insights in THE ROCK, THE ROAD AND THE RABBI. As she writes toward the end of the Introduction, “In this book, you will have the exciting opportunity to discover the truth of the Bible and learn what many passages in the Scriptures really mean. You will experience the Rock (Jesus), the Road (the Holy Land) and the Rabbi (the Word of God) as you have never experienced them before! Come deeper as we explore the land of Israel and mine the treasures of God’s Word together. There is so much more!” (Page xv)

I enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover. It is well-done and worthwhile reading.

I read this book for a Faith Gateway Online Bible Study. Kathie Lee Gifford and Rabbi Jason Sobel (a Messianic Jew) take their readers on a virtual tour of Israel which is the next-best-thing to being there to experience the Holy Land. Ray Vander Laan, Bible teacher and historian, serves as a tour guide providing his knowledgeable perspective as well. With their Jewish heritage, Kathie (her father was Jewish, and her grandfather was a Russian Jew from Saint Petersburg) and Jason share their love of Israel, Land of the Covenant. This virtual tour reflects on specific verses and practical lessons. There are enlightening cultural insights, explanations of numerical symbols in the Bible (such as, 7 - completeness and perfection), and helpful Greek / Hebrew translations. As Kathie would say, "Come... to Israel!"

Very interesting read, with some new light on translations of certain words, that coming from the Hebrew put a new meaning on a few things we read often in scripture.

We went to Israel in Jan. of 2018 and it was an unbelievable experience and we went to most of the places in this book and experienced the same things. So it was good timing for me to read this now.

I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Holy Land just a few short months ago in February. As I returned it was hard to process and fully comprehend what an amazing experience that had unfolded. Recently it has just hit me that I was able to experience this trip, and Kathy Lee Gifford’s book has been a sweet blessing as I reflect and cherish the trip of a lifetime as well as learn new things about each site visited. Whether you’re planning to visit Israel, have been before, or are just a fan of the Today show- I highly recommend this book!

This Book is Offensive

I’m Jewish. This book is co-written by Rabbi Jason Sobel, a Messianic Jew. The term Messianic Jew is a more polite team for Jews for Jesus. To Jewish people, advocating Jesus as the Messiah is as offensive as Gun control is to Wayne LaPierre.

I understand that Mrs. Gifford is enthusiastic about her religious beliefs and would have been happy to read a book about her spiritual journey. Also, I know that Christianity is based in Judaism. Christians believe that since Christ is the Messiah, the Jews covenant with G-d is fulfilled; therefore, a new religion needed to be created. The fact that Judaism still exists is a problem for Christians.

The impetus for this book was a trip to Israel that Kathie Lee Gifford undertook. If you are a believer of one of the great monotheistic beliefs (Judaism, Christianity, or Islam), I strongly encourage you to visit for your self. It is a powerful experience to visit the places where the events in the Holy Texts actually happened. Although, it doesn’t come up until the epilogue, the book is essentially a commercial for Rabbi Sobel’s tours to Israel. While some commercialism in religion is necessary, that should not be the focus.

On my way home from my own Rock, Road, and Rabbi experience teaching English in the Holy Land for the summer, I picked up a copy of Kathie Lee Gifford's book based on the recommendation of a fellow teacher. I was engrossed! Kathie's combined insights alongside the theological revelations of Rabbi Jason Sobel provided fodder for my processing my reflections as well as sharing my experience with others. My favorite quote is about Kathie's husband. "He had considered himself a Christian his whole life. But he came to realize in the Holy Land that he actually had a religion all his life, but the joy resides in the relationship one has with our loving God, regardless of where or how often you go to church...Frank Newton Gifford threw his last stone, bringing God's shalom to the chaos of the world. What is your stone?" Let the Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi serve as your stepping stone as you walk vicariously with Kathie in the footsteps of our Savior from His manger in Bethlehem to the site of His ascension in Jerusalem and pursue the purpose for such a time as this!

My book review circle at church really enjoyed this book; as a matter of fact, another group is going to do a further study this summer. We were pleased that we chose this to read during Lent, as it felt even more meaningful (if possible). In addition, a local newscaster was in the Holy Land during the time we were reading the book, and I saw many of the same places on his Facebook page, several of them videos. Some of us wished that there had been a map in the book; I found myself consulting maps on my own several times. Kathie Lee did a great job of connecting the Old Testament to the New.

Some of the numerology part felt a bit much to me, but I realize that those doing in-depth studies can make more connections.

What a perfect book to read the week after Holy Week! I've always admired Kathie Lee Gifford and how she gives God the glory publicly even when it's not PC to be doing so! What an amazing witness!

The book was very informative! I learned a lot and even have a few questions to ask my Pastor. It also makes me want to go to The Holy Land One Day!

Both the Hebrew and Greek interpretations about the Bible were outstanding and really helped me dig deeper with some of the Bible stories and lessons shared.

I highly recommend this book if you have any interest in the Bible and Christ's teachings!

An interesting look at the Holy Land of Jesus’ days. On a group tour with a rabbi, they explored many of the major sites mentioned in the Bible, trying to bring scripture to life and providing some new insights (like that Jesus was more likely a stone mason than a carpenter). That said, history isn’t my greatest interest or strength, and parts of it left me underwhelmed and/or still a bit confused. The best part for me by far was actually the very end where she spoke about losing her husband, and the intimate relationship they both had with God. It felt like the most "alive" part of the book.
