When a heartbroken widow with a newborn baby turns up at Darcey’s office saying she’s being followed, Darcey detects secret magic at work.
She investigates the case but her efforts are thwarted by her rival in the Elite. For some reason, no one wants Darcey to discover the truth.
And it looks like she won’t when her own past catches up with her. She’s hauled off to Faerie to face execution. Her crime: murdering Mother of the Hunt.
Solve the case. Check.
Escape with her life. Check.
And juggle the supernatural hotties vying for her attention? Umm, maybe.
It’s all in a days work for a bounty-hunting banshee.
I am struggling with this series. It has a good plot and I like the banshee angle. I can't think of any other series with a banshee main character so it definitely feels unique. But the side of love interests needs to stop. It is beyond irritating to have her hot and bothered over 3 or 4 guys. If this turns into a reverse harem, I am going to be beyond mad. This multiple romance thing is starting to feel like a poor plot device. Can we just get rid of the werewolf already?
I am also over the constant whining about the MC's lost powers and misspent youth. It comes up about every chapter and frankly, if the character spent less time complaining she might actually develop strategies to deal with her problems. Instead, it's a kick the can of issues; she stumbles from one action to the next with no idea what she is doing and almost always gets her butt kicked despite her supposedly extensive experience. In every fight scene she is distracted and then surprised by the enemy she took her eye off of. For someone several centuries old, she certainly seems to lack basic things like common sense and deductive reasoning. Plus how can she really bury her head in the sand this long? Sheer survival instincts need to kick in at some point with the Mannon threat hanging over her like a cloud of doom. Also, if she's so familiar with the fae, why is she constantly surprised by what they do? And shouldn't she have some control over showing her emotions? Nearly every scene with her and the fae references her shock and then her trying to hide it or some other emotion from them. I expected her to have that in the bag, given her age and experience.
I am also unhappy with Samira, who seems only capable of bursting into tears. She isn't fleshed out enough as a character to find interesting, and her constant need to be rescued is annoying. I really feel like she could as easily not be part of the story at this point.
Ultimately, I think there are some gaps in the character backstory or development that need to be fixed to make this series a strong one. And I always prefer my kick butt heroines to actually kick butt instead of stutter their way through a fight they then have to be rescued from.
Let me start of by saying that I loved books 1 and 2. The Banshee angle (which is rare in UF books), the new fantasy world Bilinda creates, the private investigator etc. But the problem for me comes with the tall-dark-and-handsome characters. Don't get me wrong, I love a good love triangle or love story in general. But this book just loses my attention when the protagonist is struggling to choose a specific love interest (you've got the Demon, the Faery/former God, and others) I mean come on, just pick one already. Unfortunately I stopped reading this book due to this irritating matter and therefore I can only rate it 2 stars. Sorry! Still love Bilinda Sheehan as an author, I just don't like where this book series is headed starting from book 3.
It is not often of ever you get to read a series about Banshee's, but Bilinda Sheehan does a wonderful job of bringing Darcey the last harbinger to life in the pages of her books. This time Mannan is drawing power from Darcey and Death is knocking on her door. Can Mannan be stopped or will death take Darcey and those she loves? This is definitely the best story in the series and they are all good, but this takes it to another level and one you don't want to miss.
Wow is all I have to say about this chapter in Darcey's story. We get some answers but end with more questions. There's lots of sexual tension between Darcey and a few of the men but no solid conclusions yet. Belinda has outdone herself this time.
2 stars because of multiple love interests. I can't stand love triangles or harems. First book was great, and then the second had to go tarnish it, third book just finished it off. Probably won't read any further books brought out in this series.
