Historical History

Well the book talks about people, places and things involving murder, heros, outlaws, betrayal, wars in Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and France - the Jacobite Rebellions, and Kings and Queens. So if you really enjoy reading about these, then this is the book for you.

Welcome Home – I loved it. I felt like we were across the table from each other or on the front porch. I've read hundreds of books on history and some of those authors could have used her help. Hopefully, she'll start of some of the "I hate history" set to read again. Please, excuse my poorly written review, it was difficult to write being emotional about history and how exciting it is to me. 5*

The perfect history book for those with short attention spans; hate history; like humor mixed with their history; or wonder where Ms. Boone got her ideas for her wonderful series. The author has done an excellent job with describing the historical background of her books. Reading Welcome Home was just as entertaining as her series. Although written as a time-sequential (or hop about using the TOC) bits and bobs of the history of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall, and how their histories mesh, the book is informative, too.

Of course, there’s nothing dry or boring with her writing style. Even if you don’t like “history” books, give this book a try. It may start you on the road to reading more about the history behind the other novels you read. Ever test your ethnic background? History explains how those foreign bloodlines became yours. I’m English/Irish/German, so where did the Asian and Middle Eastern lines come from? - Genghis Khan and Attila the Hun, and the Moors and the Spanish Armada. As I read my bloodlines, I knew the history behind each one; it made it exciting. Just as Ms. Boone uses Welcome Home to create excitement for her readers about the background of her books. Of course, you don’t need the history to enjoy her books.

As this book is non-fiction, this won’t be an extensively long review, but I did want to talk about this book. When I read the premise for this book, I was struck by how good of an idea this is. Martina’s Celtic Legends series is purely fiction, but the threads of history that are interwoven throughout the story are prominent. In Welcome Home, you’re given an opportunity to dive into some of that history a little further, and fully immerse yourself. I love history, but even if you’re not typically a huge history person, the information is presented in a way that’s easy to read and digest.

Speaking of digestion, if you’ve read my reviews of the Celtic Legends books, you’ll know that they make me hungry. There is so much good food talked about throughout the series, and Martina also decided to bless us and include some recipes in this book. The recipes seem decently easy to follow, and I plan on making some of them in the near future.

Welcome Home is such a unique, well written book, and I would love it if more authors would start coming out with material like this. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.

Religion, Power, Corruption.
This is a companion book to the Celtic Legends Collection by Ms Boone, all of which feature a bit of history and legend. This book gives some more detail of the conflicts between the English Crown and Scotland and Ireland. Whilst it is described as a book that you can ‘jump around’ via the table of contents I think it works best reading the chapters in order as they are, more or less, chronological.
So many wars have been fought throughout the world over religion, or in order to gain (and retain) power; and the history of Britain is no exception. Power leads to corruption and it is the common people, without rights or wealth who suffer. I found this book rather depressing as there was so much of man’s inhumanity to man within it’s covers with little light relief. I like to escape from the world’s troubles into literature but this book reminds you that in the present in which we live, we don’t seem to learn from history and man’s basic nature never seems to change.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

First off I love how the author begins the book with information on folklore and wars fought and the struggles of people from the past. It's a great lead in to the story. And while I am not a big fan of historical reads I did enjoy the lesson. Lesson, that's what the entire book is about. Throughout history those small tidbits are lost and only found by those interested enough to care or those who want accuracy in their novels. This are great stories and the author makes it easy for you to jump around if you do not want to read each story. Each chapter has historical recounts with additional little known facts and stories about the leaders known and not so known. Very little is left out since she includes historic Ireland and Scotland with the Celtic heroes, outlaws, royalty, clans all of it along with songs and recipes from the past make this an excellent addition to your library.

I felt like I was transported back in time, witnessing the people, battles, struggles, and landscapes that have influenced and defined so much of the Celtic world. I was utterly captivated by the romance, rivalries, and conflicts, not to mention the larger than life characters. From the Highlands of Scotland to the Beara peninsula in Ireland, this paints the picture of the behind-the-scenes from my favorite romantic novels, putting them context and giving me new perspectives, and I loved the way it was told—so conversationally that I felt like the author had taken me by the hand and was just telling me a really interesting and personal story. It sits on the fine line between fiction and non-fiction—plenty of fact, but a liberal dose of just good storytelling mixed in. With my Irish roots, this was particularly meaningful. WELCOME HOME is a treasure to return to again and again!

I absolutely loved that with this book, at least the ebook version, you can click on a title in the contents section and it will take you there. Truly giving you the option to jump around making for a fun , spontaneous, and interactive read. There's also a list of Scottish and Irish songs and Celtic recipes.

This book is truly immense and immersive and absolutely fantastic. PLEASE if you have not already, pick up all of Martina Boone's books and binge read them immediately!

While this is a "history" book, it is enjoyable reading and provides more insight into Ms. Boone's Celtic Legends books. I love being able to hop, skip, and jump to the locations that provide the information I'm interested in at the moment, and not having to read from cover to cover, although I've done that with this book as well. If you take the time to read this book, you won't be disappointed.

Enterprising, resourceful revelations of historic Ireland and Scotland. Celtic heros, outlaws, royalty, clans and the problems leading to intrusion by English forces is artistically shared with the reader! Creativity and fact are imaginatively joined to provide a pleasant reading experience. 3 1/2 stars.
Voluntarily read ARC for honest review.
