Another solid entry in the series. Though I was not a fan of the opening story as much the stories that cam after were just too precious. It is like looking into the daily lives of people, be it special days or days where you just do nothing. The last page of every chapter has snippets of conversations or articles from the characters in that particular story and that just makes the story all the better.

The first long story we encounter in the series takes up about half of this volume, and it's pretty cute. I'm not sure I totally understand what the deal is exactly with the Manor - is it kind of like a town with a thane/lordship?

I'm also curious whether the picture that both girls thought "she looks familiar" about was kiddie Hakumei? If not, then why is she familiar??

Read this third volume of Takuto Kashiki's Hakumei & Mikochi Series for Reddit Fantasy's 2023 Bingo Square Mundane Jobs, the protagonists are a tailor and a carpenter. This book qualifies for hard mode as it does not take place on Earth.

Chapter 15 - The Long Day [Anime Episode 8]
Chapter 15.1 The Denizens of Honey (House)
There are 2 groups that hate each other - the old timers who are tough gangsters types, versus up and coming artists like Konju. When the old timers tear down a stage that the artists were planning to use for performances, Hakumei and Mikochi get embroiled in the conflict when Hakumei tries to reason with the old timers.
description

The old timers escalate by taking Conju, the ringleader of the artists faction, hostage!
description

Chapter 15.2 Juleps and the Underground Passages
Second Manor Keeper Higaki corners Hakumei and Mikochi, brings them to his bar and treats them to a replication of hedonistic first Manor Keeper Ukai's special Honey Manor Julep. The original was magical in its ability to get those who drank it to stop fighting. He wants Mikochi to help him reproduce the drink.
description

Chapter 15.3 The Gloomy Wine Cellar
This is where Higaki says Ukai's journal and supplies are kept. It's also where the old-timers have decided to place Conju! As both parties confront each other, Mikochi realizes they might not be reading Ukai's original recipe right.
description

Chapter 15.4 Paper Planes and Smoke Bombs
Great, now both sides are holed up in their respective areas, throwing lychees, mushrooms (boulder sized food wars!) and smoke bombs at each other! Even in the tiny life, there's conflict and war!
description

Chapter 15.5 Moonlight and Memories
Mikochi replicates the Honey Manor Julep, bringing both sides together, but it's not quite what we expected.
description

The ending actually made me tear up, it was that touching. I wasn't expecting this. It was an interesting resolution out of left field, which underscores just how genius this mangaka is. He managed to make a kidnapping artillery bombing gang war conflict somehow seem ... tame and wholesome? Wow. Let me pick my jaw up from the floor. I can't believe it, but he managed to do it. Color me amazed.

Chapter 16 - Treetop Ladders [Anime Episode 7]
Hakumei and Mikochi are surprised to discover a lot of folks have moved into the tree they live in.
description
They climb the tree to get to know their new neighbors, among them a timid little beetle new in town, and a flying squirrel who sells juice.
description
Their journey of discovery ends at the last ladder which leads them to the very top of the tree.
description

Chapter 17 - A Day Off [Anime Episode 6]
Hakumei and Mikochi manage to talk reticent homebody Iwashidono (Hakumei's boss) into going to town on their day off. They show him a great time eating, then shopping at a second hand clothing store where the proprietor manages to get him to spend money on a stylish new look.
description

Chapter 18 - The Scent of Caneles [No anime adaptation]
Store owner Suzuki sends Mikochi to persuade Baker Keito to sell his Caneles wholesale to her store. They try one, it's delicious! However Keito refuses to deal after finding out it's for Suzuki. He tries to teach Mikochi the long, drawn out process to bake the Caneles.

Chapter 19 - Photograph of a Smile [Anime Episode 7]
Hakumei and Mikochi offer to let Mimi, a Jerboa caught in the rain, stay at their house until the weather improves.
description
Mimi is a wandering photographer whose after getting permission will blend into the background. Her patience is rewarded with natural looking, beautiful candid shots. However

Gosh darn, that photograph chapter made me cry! This manga just gets better and better. It's cute, cozy, even all the high stakes gang wars with serious adult issues somehow goes down better when it's presented with cute characters.

In this book, they introduced the concept of multi part stories. It added more complexity to the simple stories while holding the simplistic themes and plots. Over all it was an amazing read.

Turf Wars and other things

For those that have not seen any of these manga I would suggest starting from the beginning as this slice of life has a definite fantasy twist (kind of like David the Gnome) where little people with big hearts live in peace within a society shared by sentient animals (many of which are bigger than them.) Now when I say that I don't mean the little people live like animals so much as everyone in the story has taken on concepts you can find in everyday life such as various stores, insights into sewing, and masonry as a few samples while still not being to far from the themes of nature. Below are some tidbits of what you will find within book three.

While visiting town with their friend Conju, Hakumei and Mikochi end up in a conflict between the new and older generations that live in the uniquely governed Honey Manor. Anything goes for this community filled with eccentrics and artistic types and each of the leading ladies will have their own role to play when Conju is kidnapped and the both generations go to war with each other.

After their friend Sen helped to fix their home Mikochi has been noticing some noises coming from above them and she and Hakumei go to investigate to discover their old home has a bit more mystery then they imagined.

Boss Iwashi never really wants to hang out after work thanks to him being worn out. Hakumei and Mikochi have plans to get him to relax on his day off with the three of them showing us more of their little world. :)

The curator of the Mujina Store has decided she wants to sell Canelés but she is busy with paperwork so she is counting on Mikochi to convince a talented young sweets maker to allow her to sell his baked goods. However he and the curator have a past that may complicate things.

A mouse with a tiny camera sets up his tent outside Hakumei and Mikochi's home during a rainstorm. Seeing him they invite him inside to warm up and discover the wonders of the mouse's travels as they look at his photos.

The first portion of the book, a multi-length story about Hakumei and Mikochi trying to help their kidnapped friend Conju, was ok but not my favorite. When they got into sweet stories of taking their friend who works far too much for an all-day eating and shopping trip or trying to find the person who makes a delicious honey pastry, they started to shine.

This series gets cuter and sweeter as their tiny world builds. I've never loved normal, everyday adventures as much as I do when Hakumei and Mikochi are having them.
