Once an elite soldier for The Company, now I am worthless. My soul blackened…my body broken.

I fled with a bounty on my head.

A creature of the night, I find my sanctuary in an underground maze in the woods.

Then she comes to me, seeking my help. I am darkness…she is light. Her goodness makes me yearn for the impossible.

Her sister is lost, the city overrun by gangs. No one will risk their lives to interfere.

No one but me.

I have nothing to lose.

I am just a killing machine. I never lose scent of my prey.

She gives me hope. A new purpose. A chance to redeem myself.

I won’t fail her.

This is the reason they created me.

This is who I am.

The Tracker.

*** This is an 8-book series. These books are romantic suspense with sci-fi elements. Each contains a separate dreg's story (and no cliffhangers!) However, it is recommended that they be read in order to get the full "dreg" experience. These books contain strong language, adult situations, and a few steamy scenes. “People said the dregs had been snatched off the streets as young boys and trained to become ruthless mercenaries for some secret organization—perhaps even the government. The dregs were now creatures of the night—wounded warriors with tortured souls. It was rumored that if you saw a dreg, it would be the last thing you ever saw.”

The heroine: Jessica - She is a woman with a photographic memory that lives in Augusta Georgia and her sister has been taken. Augusta is in the middle of a gang war that started a week ago with the murder of the mayor, the city councilmen and half the police force. The other half had fled for their lives, and Jessica had left her sixteen-year-old sister Eliza alone which was when she had been taken by one of the gangs.

The Hero: Liam (a.k.a. The Tracker) - he was a young teenager when he was taken from whatever his life was, drugged and thrown into a jail cell to be experimented on like a rat in a cage. He could barely remember his own name from the drugs the fed him and couldn’t remember anything else about his life before that day.

The Story: Jessica had heard about the Dregs and knew Tracker was one of them. She found out where he stayed and went to beg him to help find her sister who had been hiding in a park while Jessica tried to get help getting out of Augusta. When she returned her sister was gone. Though Jessica didn’t have anything to pay Tracker, he demanded she do what he wanted, when he wanted in exchange. Starting with cleaning his apartment and cooking him dinner. She immediately agreed because she would do anything to find her sister.

I have been really liking books about genetically altered humans lately, though so many of them are similar. They all start out with experimentation, imprisonment and torture, then escape. This one did have some of that, but the Dregs were already out in the world and though they were being hunted by bounty hunters, they were on their own and free.

“We were expendable from the start. An experiment. They tortured us, messed with our minds, experimented with us like lab rats, beat us down until we craved death, then slowly built us back up and gave us a purpose in life. To kill.”

I really liked this story from the start, the characters were interesting, the world building was terrific, and I loved the fact that Tracker and the Dregs were superhuman. Though each of them had been badly injured in a way that wouldn’t heal whether it be missing a limb, or like in Trackers case where he had a near amputation of his leg that never healed right and caused him pain. However, even though they could be injured like that, they could also heal quickly from things like gunshot wounds. Tracker was also a really good fighter, faster and stronger than a normal human.

Oh hark thee, all and sundry

There is a a new man, a God if I may so say

A bod like nothing I’ve ever seen

And heart so loving has never been

Damaged and a soldier was all he was

Till a gentle touch soothes his scars

She was Jessica, the woman to his man

He was the Tracker, the Dreg, a hunk of a man

A captivating start of the series by Leslie Georgeson, about the Dregs.

My review

The background: The Dregs are the soldiers, captured in childhood, experimented, mutated, injected with more animal DNA than human, then sent to war fronts but when injured, they are to be killed by the General. But these 9 Dregs escape and are in hiding with a huge bounty on their heads. This series is their story…

Tracker, one who can locate anyone with a picture, is the first dreg who entered my life and boy, was I captivated and ensnared!!!

The story goes thus, in a gang-war filled town of Augusta, Jessica needs help to locate her sister, seeks out Tracker in his underground location in a haunted homestead, and being the good soul that he is, he does help her, even at a personal cost of his life and his best friend, Gordon.

My views My first book by author Leslie Georgeson, and I have become a fan of her writing. She writes her stories coated with suspense, thrill, and romance. The book is fast paced, the chapters have both Tracker and Jessica’s POV, but it is the chemistry between them which steals the breath, hot, heavy, and sensuous (this is the only PG-13 rated way I can describe here😉)

I loved the way Leslie has developed Tracker, he is broken, cast aside by the society, dealing with nightmares and flashbacks, yet has a deep-rooted core of decency in him. He doesn’t take advantage of the situation. He is everything a man should be… (Sighhhh…)

The Bonds: The camaraderie and the sense of brotherhood that these dregs share was nothing short of amazing. Each one is so different, so distinct, with different innate talents (so hot!!!), yet so lovable. This book is Tracker’s story, but I got to know the others too, and I think they stole a tiny bit of my heart.

Leslie’s penmanship is smooth, her chapters flow seamlessly, and the twists are certainly unexpected. Just when I thought the ending is in sight, and I was feeling nice warm and complacent, she brought an acute turn to the story and the roller-coaster ride of the story continued. Wow!!!

A book which pulled me into the story, an author who made me fall in love with these broken soldiers. There is only one thing I can say

They are the Dregs and I love them all and that’s all that matters!!!

P.S. Look at the cover, the ripped body, the cuts, what I wouldn’t give to….. (I leave that unsaid...)

Half way lost my excitement about the story

The first story in this series gets 3 stars simply because I give this author the benefit of the doubt and hopefully the writing improves as the series progresses.

I don't enjoy paranormal stories in general but this one attracted my attention as it's really lightly paranormal and science fiction.
After the initial apprehension I started the story that literally sucked me in and then half way through it started to drag and lost its excitement.

So the plot idea good but the execution is poor. The writing style was stiff and at times unnatural.

Tracker is a complex and interesting character but at times just too simplistic. Jessica's character started well but progressively that constant blushing and I MEAN it just got on my nerves, not to mention her whispering all the time and crying every time she spoke to Tracker. The love between them, I'm afraid, not convincing, their communication about how they felt disappointing. That constant "I'm not worth you" gets boring and silly after a while. And Jessica's aversion to sex based on her first and only sexual relationship at the age of 18 and her mother's behaviour, not mature and believable at all. There is barely any description of intimate moments between the two of them, and what's described is not particularly convincing and interesting. Clearly the author feels uncomfortable describing this kind of moments and skip the subject altogether. Which is fine but then the book should not be classed in this category.

I'm sure many readers will enjoy the story it just was not my cup of tea.

Damaged souls redeemed!

I was initially attracted to this given it was a 2018 TopShelf Indie Book Awards nominee. The storyline seemed interesting. The aura of the paranormal clinging around the edges, beguiling.
The Dregs! A band of brother survivors, ex military experiments, clinging to the shadows (beyond the underbelly of the city), trained soldiers and killers who overcome their pasts with the help of a good woman (in the case of the Tracker (Liam) anyway.)
I acknowledge the warnings strong language and adult situations. And there is an 18 and up recommendation.
I felt there might be enough here to really enjoy something different and the redemption of a damaged soul is a great trope. Mind you the going is not easy.
The Tracker takes on the case of a young woman searching for her sister stolen by one of the gangs that have overrun the city. Jessica seems to have her own set of gifts, like the fact that she can always remember her way back.
Liam tries to repel Jessica, but she's really very persistent. She agrees to be the Tracker's housekeeper/cook type person, in order to have her sister tracked by the expert! Of course so much more will come into play!
The story was a cut above the hackneyed but not enough for me to want to read more.

I wasn't crazy about the characters in this romance. Jess is a timid woman in need of the tracke'rs help in finding her sister. When she does find him he agrees to help in exchange for her servitude. She agrees and they built this awkward living situation where she cleans and cooks submissively but demonstrats random acts of rebellion when it suits her. The tracker is this broken, science project who acts tough but is needy and emotional. Just couldn't get into it.

I was totally lost, felt like I missed a book with the world building/background or something. Gave up by 15%

At my age (approaching 60), life is way to short & my time is to important to force myself to read a book I'm not enjoying, especially when there are so many other books out there waiting to be read.

Blurb:
THE DREGS:
Feared by most. Hated by others. Envied by none.
Always hunted, they live in the shadows.
Once powerful warriors, they are now the dregs.

In a city overrun by gang violence, can these former soldiers overcome their violent pasts, dispel the stigma surrounding them, and learn to fall in love?
-----

The Tracker:

I’m a trained killer. An expert tracker.

I’ve done despicable things. My soul is damaged. My body impaired. That’s what happens when you are a soldier for The Company. I was discharged a year ago. Now I am a dreg. Worthless. With a bounty on my head. I’ve become a creature of the night, hiding in an underground maze during the day. Because I’m not ready to die yet.

She comes to me one night, needing my help to find her sister. The moment I see her, I want her. Her goodness calls to me, makes me yearn for the impossible. She brings life back to the deadness inside me. I’m no good for her. I will do nothing but corrupt her. But I’m a callous bastard. I can’t resist her.

I try not to care for her, but somehow she slips under my skin. She makes me weak. And there is only one thing in this world I am afraid of. Weakness.

I’ll never be good enough for her, so I have to finish this job and send her on her way.

Before she destroys me.

This is an 8-book series. These books are romantic suspense with sci-fi elements. Each contains a separate romance with an HEA (and no cliffhangers!) However, it is recommended that they be read in order to get the full "dreg" experience. These books contain strong language and adult situations. Recommended for readers ages 18 and up.

Loved the idea of ex soldiers with psychic abilities but this one fell far short of its potential. The romance was mediocre. Sex was not completely fade to black but might as well of been. So much back and forth about leaving it was exhausting. “ I’m doing it to save you” “I’m not good enough”..blah blah blah. This goes on practically the ENTIRE book. I’m talking up to the last chapter.

Won’t be continuing with the series. It looks like there may be a lot of self sacrificing in the next one to.

I've changed my mind about five times about how many stars to give this book. The storyline kept me gripped and I really liked the characters. That would usually result in a good four stars, but, unfortunately, this time, there were a few things that stopped me from giving it.
As I started by saying, the storyline was certainly gripping and I was keen to know how it was going to play out. Set in what I assume is a future dystopia, this book has elements of sci-fi and the paranormal. The 'Dregs' are ex-soldiers who were engineered and experimented on in order to make them the ultimate soldiers, before being discarded once injured. They had been supposed to be killed, but escaped instead and are now on the run. This worked really well and all of the Dregs have something about them, which makes you want them to win through and get their freedom and happiness. The female lead, Jessica, is also interesting and likeable. She is a little too willing to fall into the cooking and cleaning for her man role, but she has something about her that makes her really quite likeable.
Unfortunately, where this book falls down a bit for me, is in the actual writing. On the whole, it isn't bad, but far too often there is too much telling and not nearly enough showing. Just a little more action, rather than telling us what people were feeling or thinking would have made the world of difference to the storyline. The other problem, which links to this in a way, was the repetition. Quite often we would be told what someone was worrying about, only to be told three, four and sometimes even more times, the same thing, just using different words. Some repetition helps to reinforce what the writer is trying to show us, but over and over again is unnecessary.
I did enjoy this book and feel a bit mean that I'm being quite critical, but sometimes a good book that has something small that detracts is much worse than a book that is awful from start to finish. I would be keen to read the other books in the series. Partly in the hope that the writing improves, but also because I do want to know what will happen to the other characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Jessica and Liam aka Tracker or THE tracker.
Jessica has a hard life growing up and ended up filling the roll of a mother to her little sister. She just got done with law school when a horrible gang war took out her city and her little sister ended up getting snatched up. With nowhere to go. Non of her things literally only the clothes on her back she went searching for help someone had to help her. Her poor little sister was missing. In her effort to find help she learned of men , or maybe a beasts that once were soldiers for some agency that messed with their DNA to get the biggest strongest men possible. These men had been discharged because of disability’s. Now they live their life on the run cause that same agency that they belonged to now wanted them dead. She heard about one of those men that was named tracker, he could supposedly find anyone. She searched for him and found him but she had no money so they swapped services he agreed to help if she was his slave.

This storyline was great and interesting.
There is some action but I had a hard time reading this. The two main characters were so insecure. I have a hard time reading a story with one insecure person and this was just too much I thought it would let up but no the whooooleeee book was insecurity’s. If it wasn’t for that I would of loved this. That killed it for me. I did however finish the book. I may try and read the second book because obviously it will be different people but if that continues there is no way I will be able to read through all the men’s stories.

**I received a copy of The Tracker from XpressoBook Tours and Net Galley in exchange for a voluntary and honest review. My review was not solicited in any way.**

The Tracker by Leslie Georgeson is the first book in The Dregs series. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Ms. Georgeson is a new author to me and judging by this book the next 7 books should be pretty good. The men have taken over a rundown plantation that has a underground system of tunnels and apartments for the men.

The Dregs are a group of ex-military men who were experimented on by a very cold General each has their own strength as Tracker's is that he can do exactly what his name is find people. When Jessica needs someone to find her missing sister she knows that he'll be able to find her. But she doesn't have any money just herself and her skills to pay him. Will Tracker be able to find her before she's sold by one of many violent gangs who have now taken over Augusta?

Tracker doesn't want to help Jessica especially since she can't pay for finding her sister, Eliza. He tells her to become his slave cooking and cleaning his apartment but he'll soon wonder if Jessica could be the one person who could bring him peace and Love. But after finding Eliza they have to deal with the General and his experiments. When he tells him why he created his group of super soldiers will surprise you and hope that he'll be rescued by his men before the drug cocktail kills him.

Good read!

I wasn’t sure if this would be my kind of military suspense but I was actually quite taken with this storyline. There was plenty of action, suspense, and depth to this novel. The steamy scenes were few and far between but well written and the timing was relevant to their situation. I really liked this group of guys, the “dregs”, and given the description I thought it may be more futuristic or post-apocalyptic. It’s not. It’s actually the reason I put off reading it for awhile, bc I’m not much into that genre. This was more Jason Bourne and less Terminator. I was a little put off by the “go away...wait come back” mentality of Tracker, but it fit with the character. Even his buddies were like “you’re an idiot. Keep the chick.” So it worked for me in the long run bc his flaws were candidly discussed. Smooth read, well edited, and a fantastic start to a new series. No I did not receive this as an arc. This review is my honest opinion. Happy reading!

This is a new author and series for me. This book was a lengthy read but the story line was interesting enough and flowed well that I found myself turning the pages to see what happens next. The Dregs, are men that worked for The Company as elite soldiers that have become disposable. They are hunted down and when found will be killed. They now live in the shadows of the night to survive and will only consider showing their faces during the day when it is time to punch out. The Tracker now has a new mission, to find Jessica's little sister. Can he complete the mission without losing his heart? What does this mean for Jessica if she gets involved with him? Interesting read and I will continue the series. Enjoy!

Augusta has fallen in a gang war and Eliza was all Jessica had, now she must go to a dreg, The Tracker, and convince him to help.

Tracker and the other dregs have set themselves up in hiding since there is a bounty on their heads. No one is stupid enough to approach after what people call them. Until Jessica.

Begging Tracker to find her little sister might be the scariest thing she's ever done before, but it doesn't matter she had to find Eliza. The fact that Tracker is gruff, dealy and talented doesn't keep the attraction she has away.

See if they find Eliza, or if he throws her out. And what becomes of a relationship if anything in this first book of The Dregs.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Tracker

This story is about a man named Tracker who has been altered by a military type of enterprise called the Company. He and the other men like him who have also been altered are living underground in a maze under an old mansion as they have a price on their heads. One day a young woman finds her way to their hideout looking for Tracker to help her find her sister who has been taken by a gang. The story comprises their relationship and the hunt for her sister as well as the overlying story of what is going on in the lives of the other men who are also known as dregs. It is an action packed story and rather intense, it also contains some fairly explicit love scenes.

The Tracker is the first book in Leslie Georgeson’s The Dregs, and also my first read by this author. The story starts out well and has an interesting plot that unfortunately failed to deliver. The book had so much potential that just didn’t seem to be met. And Jessica’s character deteriorated as the story went on and became annoying and immature. The foundation of this series is complex and commenced with interesting and intriguing world building, but it needs some major work on the character content to keep readers coming back. Whiny, snivelling women like Jessica are not my cup of tea! That said, I’m always happy to give a new author a go, so I’ll definitely read book two before I make any final judgements.

YES! EXCELLENT!! Of course ~ in general ~ this is the story of a broken man who is 'fixed' through the love of his 'brothers-in-arms', his 5 year old daughter, and the new love in his life. On the surface, all of that is true ~ but read this story, and you'll see there are so VERY many shades/level/layers to this seemingly 'simply' story arc. Ms Georgeson does a remarkable job with characters and setting ~ I feel/see/smell/feel what they are ~ I'm T*H*E*R*E!! Right there with them, encouraging Tracker Liam's metamorphosis into who he is supposed to be, free of his captive life: a caring, solid man of integrity, compassion and love. Really ~ what more could you want? There are 8 books ~ and I've already bought all of them! Thank you, Ms Georgeson! THANK YOU!!

The Tracker by Leslie Georgeson It is the first book about a group of men that have been experimented on by the government. Kidnapped as kids and gene spliced dna with animals. the men have each a different enhancement. They escape and try to stay off the radar from the General in charge of the experiments. Jessica is desperate to find her missing sister and asks for the aid of The Tracker to find her. He agrees to help putting his partner and others in danger .This book has a great storyline with a good romance involved. I didn't want to put this one down . Really looking forward to reading stories about the other enhanced men.

I loved this book! Leslie can write all kinds of genres, I have read other books by her. and like all her other books this is a great read. This was well written, had a great story line, some twists and turns. The characters were well thought out, the side characters added lots to the story too. This book had me pulled in from the start, Jess and Tracker had such a connection. This book pulls at your heartstring, (better have a tissue box). Leslie makes you feel like you are in the story. I can't say enough good things about her writing. I recommend this book to all. I received it as an arc and voluntarily reviewed it.

It was terrible what the general did to Tracker and his brothers with the experiments, but at least they escaped. Jessica went and found him to get her sister back from the gang that stole her. She had no money so she cleaned and cooked for him to pay him for his services. They finally found her sister and got her out, but by then she had fallen in love with him. Then she was kidnapped so the general would get Tracker back and experiment on him more to create more super soldiers. The guys got her and Tracker out and then killed the general. They got through their problems and were together for new life.

Trucker: Damaged soul, just a boy deep down waiting for the right person to help him make the final steps into growing up, seeking for his missing soul.
Jessica: fearless, beautiful inside / out, loyal.
Fierce warriors both of them.
Strong words, great story, breathtaking dialogues, fucking hot sex scenes.
I don't know if I made clear enough but I fucking L.O.V.E. this book.
