Award-winning short story writer Cristina Jurado's first collection in English is filled with the idea of the other: different lives that take place at the corners of our eyes, just out of sight. The boundaries between the real and the unreal have never before been so porous, or so fragile. Alien sex-goddesses feed off venal politicians; people have their memories wiped and their personalities changed - for a fee; a vision of the champing jaws of hell accompanies a death in the family. These six stories are six different worlds, and introduce into the English-speaking market a fascinating new author of speculative fiction.

I was determined to read this book because I LOVED THIS COVER.

But it worked out, I found the short stories to be over all enjoyable. Some of them seemed underdeveloped and others were a bit hard to follow but it was a weird little adventure and I'm glad I took it.

A fantastically dark, visceral, and unsettling collection of stories, weaving between scifi and horror, haunted by monsters that bite and devour. Most of the Jurado's monsters lurk beneath the surface of the everyday world, or beneath the skin (sometimes beneath our own skin), waiting for us to be alone. There is blood and guts,

This was my first time reading Jurado's work, and she has a strong, powerful voice that commands your attention right from the start. An excellent read for anyone who like their speculative fiction on the dark, weird, raw side.

What an incredibly bizarre collection of six stories. Jurado really put the strange into these tellings. I think "Inchworm" was probably the most evocative, but "Second Death of the Father" had horror built upon horror for me. "Alice" amused me by its rather sudden left turn at the end, and "The Shepherd" was bizarre as heck.

Jan 2021, 47%: I think the author writes very well but all the stories had the same feeling to them and I didn't feel like wowed by any of the ones I read so I put it aside.

Collection of work, kind of a mixed bag, a bit too surreal for my tastes. YMMV. Of them, "The Shepherd" was my favorite. Very atmospheric to me.
