There, she spends her time practicing her rowing skills, learning more about her new home, and meeting all sorts of fun and interesting people along the way.

I received this manga from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

Oh my, I am so delighted that I got the chance to also read the next Masterpiece of Aria. I have been hoping this one would appear on Netgalley since the day I saw the first volume. I just adore the Aria show, the characters, the world building. And the art. Both the manga and the anime have a gorgeous style of art. With the manga I can just soak up all the little details, the way the characters look and their expressions.

Welcome back to Aqua. Akari has been here for 12 months (!!) which means she finished her first half year on Mars. Yep, Mars has 24 months. Which must be a big change for Akari, used to the Manhome rotation of 12 months. At the start of the volume we have reached Fall season, leaves are falling, and I was desperately wishing for colours to see how Aqua looked again in fall colours. Thankfully we do get a part later on with colours! I just LOVED the colours and how everything popped out.

We have various stories again, as I read I will tell you about them + my feelings.

Warning, this part my be cluttered and long as there are quite a few chapters in this one (Navigation 10 – 20 are bundled in this one). The first one is about a grumpy old man who is looking for someone and Akari’s kindness as she shows him around while helping him. The ending was so sweet I cried a bit. Yep, I am still very emotional. The move to a new home is now done, but my wedding is coming up next month. Eep!

Then we also have gondola cleaning on a beautiful day, because of course you need to keep your gondolas beautiful and pristine if you want to guide people around. I loved to see this part though, it is a learning moment for Akari plus it shows that there is more to undine than just guiding and rowing. I am glad to see how her attitude is towards it though, she isn’t afraid to do hard work and even makes it fun. Poor president though, but what did he think would happen? 😛

Next up is a superhero story featuring our president. He is so silly, but I did think it was cute to see him dress up and try to fight crime or in this case bring something back to someone. The next story is about Akari and Aika going out, but instead Akatsuki pops up, I still think he is highly annoying and I wish he would be kinder, or should I say more honest with Akari. I did love seeing how much Akari knows about the city and I loved all the tidbits about the city. And that she loved sharing it with Akatsuki.

In Navigation 14 we are heading with Alicia and Akari to a gorgeous shrine with foxes. It was all quite mystical and mysterious, and I just adore how Akari seems to have a knack for meeting supernatural things or getting into supernatural stuff.

Up next is the gondola marathon: Vogare Longa! It was fun to see undine (full or trainee) and public go against each other in one big beautiful marathon. I was a bit sad that Aika took it as a race and even got angry at Akari when she tried to say hi to those she knows. She even took off when someone lost a bunch of fruits and Akari helped out. I hope that Aika will gain a bit more empathy and will learn to enjoy things, and also that she should be open to helping people.

Winter has arrived in our next and 16th story. Eeep, snow bugs are just too adorable, and I would love it if they were real. I was once again tearing up while reading this one because of the art, but also because of the story.

Story 17 makes it way and with it it is time for hot springs. I had a laugh at how Akari didn’t know what to expect and suddenly saw all the naked people. The look on her face! So precious, and also so relatable. I am sure I would also look the same way. 😛 Plus, I loved the hot spring, it is set in an old mansion, and it was just so gorgeous. I wish I could visit it. I had a laugh at how much Alicia was drinking. We begin with just one bottle and slowly there are more and more around her and on the table. The night bath scene was just utterly gorgeous.

We get a special navigation featuring the daily life of our president. Or well, his fight with a box.

Number 18 is here and we learn a bit more about how Aqua works. The Salamanders who control the climate, but there are also gnomes who maintain the gravity. I was very excited at the mention of the gnomes, because that meant we would meet Al! I love that little guy, and indeed he makes his appearance in this one. He is once again acting like an old man, just as Aika keeps reminding him. But that is part of his charm and I know that Aika fell for him, so she doesn’t mind it that much. 😛

More gorgeous colour pages in the next chapter, and I was just delighted! New Year’s Eve has arrived, and I was looking forward to seeing the party. The traditions on Aqua for New Year seem so much, and I wouldn’t mind incorporating it in my own life. Out with the old to start a whole new year fresh. It was just gorgeous to see all the little details, the hats going up in the air, the dancing people, the first sunset, the glow.

The last chapter and we have the carnival. Yep, the party continues! President Aria is off on his trip, to who knows where, but I am guessing the cats also have their version of Carnival to celebrate. Carnival happens and I had a big suspicion on who Casanova was. Of course, Akari supernatural skill finds his way in this story as she runs after one of the followers of Casanova. I love that she is able to experience these things though, it makes her extra special. I loved her facial expression when she found out about the identity of Casanova, and it is also a good thing that a certain someone was there to help her.

And so ends another fabulous big volume of Aria! I had tons and tons of fun reading this one, diving into the world of Aqua. We didn’t see Akari go up a rank nor did we see much of her training, but we can still see her grow. She is learning more about the planet, about the customs and the people, and she is able to do tours and make it interesting, fun, and also bring a happiness to people’s hearts (like with the old man at the beginning). I can’t wait for the next volume in this series, I want to know what Akari will experience the next time. Maybe until then I will ease the wait by watching the series again or finally get to watching Avvenire!

I would highly recommend this gorgeous and fun manga to everyone!

ARIA: The Masterpiece Vol. 2 by Kozue Amano

I don't have much to say about this book. As with book one I loved it to bits and only wish there were more coloured pictures. I also miss a few of the characters from the Anime who appear in the stories I've read thus far but are absent from the Manga, making the Anime and the Manga somewhat different.

Vol. 3 comes out in September!

This is such a sweet and charming manga, with elements of Italian culture mingled with Japanese and moved all the way to Mars in the future (Mars is now called Aqua and is mostly covered in water due to terraforming).
In this volume we go through almost an entire year of life on Aqua and not only learn how the planet regulates its gravity to keep it closer to Earth gravity (Earh is referred to as Mahome now) and how Carnival is celebrated on Mars. We also learn the secret identity of the infamous Casanova!

The art is beautiful as usual, and I love how calming the story is. The backgrounds are just amazing and the characters are so cute! I do wish the whole thing was in color but... I also love Akari's personality, she's so cheerful and enthusiastic.
I can't say enough about this series!

This was a gorgeous volume. There were several two page set pieces that were breathtaking. The world building is top tier. Every chapter is explaining something about Aqua. This is a very relaxing read and a feel good story. It's not like much else out there and is a great book to mix in with all the drama and action stuff out there.

What a magnificent second volume of a great manga. The plot is loose but explores the world of Aria with a small group of women, which gives the work its cohesion. There are some remarkable moments of discovery that at the same time retain a mysterious air.

I received an eARC of this Manga courtesy of TokyoPop via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

The cover and undercover are amazing, drew with vivid colors that make me want to jump into Akari's world. I had the opportunity to read volume 1 and 2. The story is divided in a total of 12 tankōbon. As common for manga this volume is in black and white with the cover and few pages in colors. The story continues telling us the new life of Akari and the beautiful world on the planet Aqua (previously known as Mars). We are in the future, precisely in 2301. It's 150 years that Mars known as Aqua, underwent terraforming. In this second volume Akari continue her new adventure working as Undine (gondolier who leads high-end tours around the city). It's been almost a year she moved to Aqua to work as an Undine, and even though she still learning, her clients are extremely satisfied of her work. Akari is a generous, gracious and kind young woman, amazed by the beauty of Neo-Venezia. Neo-Venezia drawings are amazing, for those who have been to Venice in Italy it is easy to recognize some buildings. I loved how detailed are the drawings, and how the Italian environment is mixed with the Japanese culture.
The illustrations are nice, and the few colored pages are magnificent. The story sounded interesting from the beginning, because it was different from what I am used to read. I can see a lot of potential with this manga, and I hope that in the next volumes the story will be more active. In my opinion these 2 volumes are mainly used to make a solid base for the rest of the story. Aria: The Masterpiece is a nice manga, Akari's personality give me happiness and the story itself is well written. There is some action but I wish there was more. In conclusion, I hope that in the third volume the story of Akari will develop further. This is mainly the reason why I gave only 2 stars, because I can see the potential of this manga, but I feel that the real story didn't come out yet. So, hopefully in the next volumes we will see an explosion of action in Akari's life.

Return to Aqua for the winter.

Here we have more slice-of-life tales of Akari the Undine in the city of Neo-Venezia. The story arch here is her first Autumn and Winter in her new home. There's a lot of world-building involved.

First, there's the contrast between Aqua and Manhome. This started in the first volume, with how much more rustic Aqua is than Manhome. Volume 2 builds on that. It sounds like Earth has become more like a single sprawling city with few if any natural areas. This would explain why Neo-Venice has so many tourists. In fact, natural areas from Manhome have been recreated on Aqua. There's an island nearby Neo-Venezia that is a Japanese forest temple. Supposedly, kitsune weddings take place there.

Second, there's holidays like Vogare Longa (alternatively "Vogalonga"), a gondola race that marks the change of seasons. It's a very big deal. It's also a real thing. The real-life Venice does this every year. Akari also celebrates New Years Eve with her new friends and reflects on how much has happened in her life over the past year.

Third, there is a nice mixture of grand and mundane. For the grand scale sci-fi flavor stuff, there's a chapter about Aqua's Gnomes. These are the professionals who maintain Aqua's artificial gravity. They live underground similar to how Akatsuki the salamander lives on a floating island. Then there's some more mundane and small-scale stuff, like gondola cleaning.

Fourth, the art is beautiful. From the forest temple, to the Bridge of Sighs in Neo-Venice, to the underground city of the Gnomes, it is all beautiful. This pairs well with the peaceful stories. Really relaxing reading.

Trickster Eric Novels gives "ARIA the Masterpiece volume 2" an A+

Now for the official beginning of Aria

Honestly I am glad that Tokyo Pop was able to get the rights to Aqau and publish it in the first volume of the Aria Masterpiece manga thanks to the lead up to life in this volume. With a little bit of science fiction and a little bit of fantasy we are treated not to an overwhelming plot of urgency but a story of just living life to its fullest on the now terraformed Aqua which used to be Mars. The artwork continues to be excellent and the book itself is surely a masterpiece as the title claims with French fold covers, foil accents, and bright colors before you get to the crisp, clean pages that contain this feel good story.

Amongst the stories with we see simple and interesting things such as how the planet keeps a gravity similar to Earth, the biology of the planet, weather cycles, history of Italian structures, and even some of customs as we are invited to see the world along with the optimistic and innocent Akari who one day wishes to be a professional gondolier. If you are looking for something with a bunch of action then this story is not going to be for you seeing as Akari takes life slowly while treasuring all of her experiences but if you are looking for a feel good story with interesting character interactions then this story might be right up your alley. :)

Really enjoyed this comic/manga and all the artwork. I do wish it was in color as I think I would love it even more. I would purchase this and read it again. I need to find a copy of Volume 1 now too! My eight year old would enjoy the stories and setting and I would not have to worry about it being too graphic for her age. It did take a few to figure out which way to turn the pages as its not set in an english direction.

this is so pretty - Akari is endearing, a typical ingenue with perseverance, and a correspondent with a mysterious person back on Manhome. the cat stuff is adorable, especially President Aria's unrequited affection for President Hime, and the idea that the cats all meet in a Mars/Aqua version of Kingdom of the Cats.
