Benio's would-be rapist talks about how much he's in love with her and her new lingerie, while the rest of the exorcists decide that power-scaling is bullshit and all the supporting cast are useless. Yeah, let's kill off some nobodies and what-not to prove how strong the enemy is blah blah blah, okay what if we one-shot some characters that are supposed to be strong! It's like jobbing, but with no effort since you don't actually have to have a fight scene you just kill someone in a single panel and move on.

I really enjoyed this volume and all that it offered, but I had an epiphany while reading and have to discuss it. I want to state for the record, however, that I did really like this volume and am still thoroughly enjoying this series. With this disclaimer out of the way, I want to talk about what could be considered the biggest flaw in this series: the power creep due to inadequate power scaling.

Let me explain: Throughout the series, we've seen the exorcists fight each other and through these battles the we as readers get an idea as to how strong each one is. The last tournament arc is a perfect example of this. While this is fine on paper and many shounen action series do this (the power scaling thing, not necessarily the tournament thing) the problem with this is that readers are learning about the strength of the exorcists through comparing them TO OTHER EXORCISTS, NOT THE KEGARE. Why is this important? The central conflict of this series is the war between the Kegare and the exorcists, a war that has been going on for centuries AND one that the exorcists have CONSISTENTLY STRUGGLED WITH. The reason why it's so important that Benio and Rokuro produce the prophesied child is because all of the exorcists families believe that it's the ONLY WAY to end this war because THEY HAVE BEEN FIGHTING IT FOR SO LONG AND HAVEN'T MADE MUCH PROGRESS.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "what does any of this have to do with power creep and power scale?" Well, the problem is that throughout the series so far, only ONE Basara has been taken out and most of the exorcists have either DIED OR BEEN SEVERELY INJURED in their fights with Kegare. Having the exorcists fight against other exorcists to show how strong they are is FINE, but their strength means NOTHING if they CONSISTENTLY GET THEIR ASSES HANDED TO THEM BY THE KEGARE. In other words, what's the point of trying to show the Twelve Guardians and families of said guardians as bad-asses when they have only won against other exorcists but LOSE OR DIE against Kegare, THE CREATURES THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE KILLING TO END THIS WAR?! It makes so little sense and any strength that they show seems meaningless if that strength isn't strong enough to take out the creatures they're supposed to be fighting.

Rant over, still love this series, just don't think about it too much.

Benio! I really adore this character and glad we got to see her again in this volume. Now if only she and Roku would share a scene again! Especially now!
