I started reading Saga almost two years ago, but because I took the decision to only read it in the form of these collected editions and not the individual issues or volumes (just because I like my graphic novels chunky), I have been waiting for this for over a year. But oh boy, was it worth the wait!

After 54 issues the story has really come a long way and it was in this volume that the complexities of each story arc culminated to an explosive mid-point. I have fallen in love with every single character and what's interesting about this story is that we follow both the main protagonists and their antagonists (or what would traditionally be the comic book villains if you will). This unusual way of alternating sides makes the reader rooting for everyone, even though the characters are working against each other. As a result, no matter who is winning the reader ends up heartbroken.

And that's my favourite thing about Saga: how ballsy it is. They are not scared to make big decisions, kill important characters and break the reader's heart. They also love changing things up and creating new situations that drastically change the feel of the story, essentially rebooting the work with every new volume.

Saga may be an intergalactic story set in different planets across the galaxy, featuring a very diverse cast of characters ranging from aliens to beasts and lovable pets but in the heart of this gorgeous colourful world lies the simple story of a family and their interpersonal relationships. This is what makes this story so great and this is why this particular book broke my heart time and time again. The final pages of this volume may be their most controversial decision to date and I cannot wait to see what happens next.

TW for major character death.

i don’t know how to review this. i want this accursed text twenty feet away from me. i read issue 42 when i was already in a fragile emotional state and it genuinely almost tipped me into a breakdown. not, like, a fun cathartic tragedy enjoyer breakdown; like, a shaking-and-sobbing-seriously-upset thing. and then it got WORSE. i need this thing banished. i’m never taking a book rec from yves again

edited to add: after having some calm-down time i can assert that saga is a masterclass in making tragic events hurt, because it's incredibly incredibly good at building characters you care about in a very short time frame AND good at balancing up moments with down moments--none of the horrible bits would hurt so much if hazel and her parents didn't just as frequently seem to be safer and happier and closer to living without the constant threat of violence. typing this out is not making me feel better

I had no idea when I picked up the first volume of Saga in 2015 that I was going to become so invested in the series!  I read comics as a kid, sure, but this is not your average comic and it's certainly not kid-friendly.

While Saga is full of sex and violence, it's also a beautifully illustrated tale of family and acceptance with social commentary on the pulse of current hot button topics.

Readers follow Alana and Marko, two soldiers from different planets in a long war to destroy each other.  Alana (from Landfall) and Marco (from Wreath) are in love and on the run from both Landfall and Wreath for betrayal of their own kind.  Once their daughter Hazel is born, they'll do anything to protect her.

The family collect friends like Izabel, the ghost of a girl killed in the war who is bonded to Hazel; and foes, like the assassin known as The Will who is never more than a step behind.

Along the way, Hazel and her grandmother are captured and held in a Landfallian prison while Alana and Marko maintain an uneasy alliance with one of their biggest enemies, Prince Robot IV.

Alana and Marko are eventually reunited with Hazel and it isn't long before the couple realizes they're expecting a second baby and settle for a time on the comet Phang.

Saga: Book Three collects volumes 7-9 (issues 37-54) and let me just say I was not emotionally prepared for the heartbreaks endured.

While Alana and Marko should be enjoying their reunion with Hazel, they face a miscarriage after a dramatic exit from the comet Phang.
Old foes return and the family must make decisions about their future but are interrupted by an enemy's arrival.
A shocking cliffhanger leaves readers stunned and in need of the next issue immediately ...only to find that creators Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples are taking at least a year long hiatus from the series to recharge.  Vaughan promises they will return because the story is not over yet, with plenty more major events.

Saga has been going strong since 2012 and has built a community of faithful readers emotionally invested in the lives of the characters.
All of the characters, from the family members to their pursuers, are well developed and genuine; each adding to the storyline in compelling and necessary ways.

Hazel is a fantastic and honest narrator giving readers are given a candid look at war with all its prejudice and violence, but also an assertive look at family, love, and devotion.

If you appreciate innovative stories, whether you're a regular reader of graphic novels or not, Saga is a series worth checking out.  It's a wildly creative sci-fi/fantasy covering contemporary issues.

Thanks to Image Comics and Edelweiss for providing me with a DRC in exchange for my honest review.  Saga: Book Three is scheduled for release on June 4, 2019.

Oh nooooo, Saga.
I ADORED the first two books in this series (yes I know you're probably supposed to talk about comics in terms of issues or whatever but I'm very new at this). Like, adored them so much I couldn't stop reading long enough between them to write a review (which I've been mostly too lazy to do the past few months for anything, but still). The first two-thirds of the story so far were masterfully done, hitting beat after emotional beat without feeling forced. I loved the art! I loved the world! I loved the characters!
Unfortunately, it started to feel in this book as though the story had jumped the shark. Mad spoilers from here out, which I've put in tags, so this is your warning not to click on them. You really, really don't want to know with these.
I think a big cause of the story's decline was its having too many damn characters, which led to a lot of folks in this book being either completely sidelined or cheaply and unceremoniously killed off.
I also felt the plot became muddled and stagnant. I'm having a harder and harder time believing that the ~whooooole universe~ really wants these guys dead for *checks notes on hand* Having a kid? After ten fucking years?
I dunno. I'm glad the creators have taken a break. I hope they find the spark again. I look forward to seeing where Saga goes next.

Well, I'm finally caught up to the hiatus in the Saga issues. I had some pieces of this last installment spoiled for me before reading this, but not THAT twist. There's no way that closing page sticks, right? I think Brian K Vaughan has gotten more and more cruel as the series goes along, and that final page was one of many moments that were pretty shocking. The series just keeps getting better, even if I think it has a tendency to lean on the twist of "character in peril = character off screen appears suddenly to save the day," a few times too often. Still, so very ready for when the series returns. I have a feeling this will be considered one of the great comic series well into the future.

⠀i am sad. i am very sad. i did not like that ending and i don't like the fact that twenty months have passed since issue #54. this was very, very good. i enjoyed this collection more than book two, and about the same as book one. i will eagerly await for the saga hiatus to be over.

I read this as single issues and I STILL cried in the end. This series is just so beautiful. I can’t wait to see what they do when they come back from Intermission because shit has really changed this time around.

I actually feel like I’m going to puke right now….

Above was my initial response right after finishing the book last night. What a HELL of an ending to the first arc. I truly feel bad for everyone who read Volume 9 the day it came out and have been waiting almost 4 years for issue 55 to be available. I can hardly stand it and I can actually go ahead and read issue 55 right now at least to find out what happens next (I haven't yet, but my will is weak, I can't see myself waiting till October when Volume 10 comes out).

What can I say about Saga that hasn't already been said?

This is an amazing sci-fantasy book about two people from opposing worlds who fall in love and create a "hybrid" baby named Hazel, she is half Horn (from her dad, Marko) and half Wing (from her mom, Alana). Hazel is an abomination as far as the rest of the galaxies are concerned so Marko, Alana and Hazel quickly become the universe's most wanted people. We watch as the family flees across the cosmos from those who want to end them and we meet those who are willing and not to willing to help them along the way.

I think what I love the most about Saga is the parallels to the real world. Vaughn and Staples created this whacky and whimsical universe to talk about extremely current events and thus make this exploration more digestible because none of the creatures in this world can be directly connected to this politician or that leader etc.

Vaughn and Staples have done some of the best character work within a comic that I have ever seen. I think it can be harder to really develop a character in the comic medium than it can be in prose but the character work in Saga is top notch. There were so many times when I started out loving a character and ended up sick of them and vise versa. When reading you never quite know whose motives are true or not. Staples does such a stunning job of drawing character expression which add so much more to the story than just the dialogue. I feel deeply attached to so many characters in this book, hence why I was just destroyed after finishing this arc last night.

Not only are the character expressions top notch but Staples just draws such a lush, colorful, out of this world (literally and figuratively) book for us to read that I kind of can't deal with it. If the art is so-so for me it won't necessarily ruin the book if the story is good (insert Outcast here) but it makes it that much more awesome when the amazing art matches the amazing story-line. Besides, I tell my kid patients daily, rainbow and glitter are my favorite colors, so I'm never going to argue a super colorful and imaginative art style in my comics.

Saga is everything I wanted and more, I am so glad I chose to pick it up, I don't wish I would have done it sooner because that ending, but I REALLY enjoyed the ride and it's going to feel like an eternity for the next 54-ish issues to come out.

“It’s funny which random moments from the past our minds choose to cling to, isn’t it?” “Okay, maybe more interesting than funny but still…”

EDIT: Stupid mobile not hiding spoilers. I removed them completely on the off chance I ruin something for somebody.

Finally! I held off reading the last couple of trade paperbacks because I wanted to wait for this beautiful edition.

I can't believe I didn't love Saga from the very beginning. I guess I just wasn't sure what to expect and it took me a little while to get the whole graphic-science fiction-fantasy world. But at some point it just clicked and it became one of my favorite comic series.

Fiona Staples' art continues to impress me, there's one splash page that made me think "holy shit..." because of the epic scale of the scene.

I really like all of the characters, and I think there's such a nice amount of diversity of characters in terms of gender, race and sexuality. I don't want to speak for anyone who doesn't fall into my own gender/sexual spectrum but I think they're all written in a very well-rounded, human way.

So, for the most part this is a wacky fun adventure, but every now and then there's this emotional kick in the balls. It happens about halfway through this volume. The story really takes it to this tragically emotional place, but it's Staples' art that really sells the beautiful sadness of the moment. Seeing the sadness in Hazel's tiny little face is heartbreaking.

As can be seen, I love Saga, it's beautiful and funny and sad. There are times where I can just stare at the pages, at the faces of the characters... the way Fiona Staples draws people smiling, the in depth moral arguments mixed in with crude humour, the epic scale, the tiny human touches, Ghüs... I can't wait to see where it goes next.

God, this ending still hurts.

I mean, it really, really hurts. I have to give kudos to BKV + Staples for telling a story where these characters come together and hurt each other and it hurts but you understand it? Like, seeing all the threads that lead to Doff and Upsher, Prince Robot IV, The Will, Marko and Alana - seeing the path that brought them here makes sense but it doesn't make it any easier to stomach. It truly hurts seeing the end result.

So, while I'm sad, I'm just more in awe of how this story ended up here and how all of these characters weaved their way into my heart.

Saga just gets better and better as the series goes on. So many captivating, loveable, and diverse characters. It’s impossible not to be sucked in. Really not okay with that last panel, but all the same I hope this series does not end any time soon (here’s hoping for at least 3 compendiums).

this is the way the year ends, both with a bang and with a whimper, bcs holy mother of god!! how dare they hurt me this way!!!!
book three is so, so good, the best yet, in spite of Vaughan and Staples killing off almost all my darlings :(((( I kept wondering what's up with the GoT comparison on the blurb, but this is it, isn't it, it's that the writers are not afraid to remove any of the major players. that last page... I did not deserve that.
god fucking damn it. and like, volume 10 is at least out now?? I could theoretically go buy it right now?? whereas imagine those poor folks who read this in *2018* and only got new material this fall. (and this is just me being shocked by the end btw, of course artists should take pauses for as long as they need) (well,,,not as long as George R. R. Martin lol)

oof. really exciting and excellent work. highly recommended.

This volume brings to a pinnacle everything of Saga that has been published to date. Hilarious, moving, relentless, and at times shocking. Excellent. (A side note; I turned my wife onto this series over Christmas week. Reading it became the only thing she did for the next three days.)
