This ARC is absolutely amazing. I love mysteries anyhow and the rating started at 4 stars and by the time I was finished reading I liked it so much I rated it 5 stars. I really liked the idea of all the fun characters who could have done it and the most likely ones well most likely didn't do it. With this mystery you have to think outside the box. I got involved in it so much I was trying to solve this mystery with Penny and her friends. If you think about it, this book tries to teach you to think outside the box in real life to instead of staying in your comfort zone. Dream big and go for your dreams just like Penny did. Did I mention I loved this book and recommend it to everyone.

“There’s no ‘right,’ Penelope,” Turkey says. “You just have to do your best. That’s all you can do.” “But what if my best isn’t good enough?” I ask. “That doesn’t mean you stop trying,” Turkey says. “That doesn’t mean that you quit.”

Penny Banks has a problem, well, she has a lot of problems but this one tops them all...her license to be a private investigator is about to expire and Turkey, her familiar, was the one who found out. Sure, Speedy’s Online Private Investigator Program may be one of the worst programs in the country, but Penny did pass, and her skills have improved. So, in true Scarlett O’Har...Penny Banks fashion she just figures she’ll deal with it....wait, did Turkey say she had less than a week?

And....she passes even though she’s given the lamest answers ever...makes no sense that she did. Problem #2: ‘The Art and Science of Becoming a Witch’, her Terra Coven’s how to book, and all the copies she’d made...are gone...

Who has the book...and better yet why? With Turkey’s help, Penny begins to actually sleuth out the case...investigating, following leads, drawing conclusions. She’s beginning to take the responsibility the Coven has taken on, to protect the realm despite the misunderstandings and situations she keeps running into. Will she find the book? Will she find the killer? Will there be celebrating or laments when the case concludes? Will Turkey get his supper on time?

This book and these characters make me smile. I can hardly wait when each land in my inbox and often read them in one sitting. I love Penny, Marley,Annie and Cora and the misfits that they attract in the town of Hillcrest.... all because of a “how to” book. Highly readable and recommended 5/5

Penny Banks is a Private Investigator who has a cat-familiar with very expensive food habits so she can't afford to let her investigator's license expire. She has just one week to pay for, and pass, her renewal examination. At the same time Penny is trying to figure out a theft when a dead body pops up and Penny and friends are anxious to figure out just who the murderer is. It's a small town after all. Lots of twists and turns and loads of questions. Will Penny pass her investigators renewal exam? Who is the thief? Who is the murderer? What is the Desire Spell? The Case of the Desire Spell is the third in this series and cozy at it's best. It can certainly be read as a stand-alone book, but there are nuances that will be missed if you have not read books 1 and 2. This entire series is a fun read, entertainment at its best. I'm anticipating book 4 anxiously. Don't miss the Hillcrest Witch series!

Penny is in a tail spin having to do an exam to renew her PI license, the spell books missing and the new lawyer in town now dead.

She thinks the death of the lawyer and the missing books are related. Could Max, the sexy vampire have anything to do with this?

While the ladies learn the desire spell what will Penny want the most?

Another great read by the author. The characters are getting better and better to read about. The spells are getting better and Penny is holding her own. We see Chris again in this plot and you never know what is going to happen between her and these crushes.

Loving this series there is something for everyone.

OMG! How does Penny find herself in these situations? I swear Turkey has more sense sometimes than Penny, but she makes up for it by loving so fiercely. She takes procrastinating to a whole new level by nearly letting her PI license expire. On second thought that hasn't actually been resolved either. At least things are going amazingly in Cora's life even with Penny interfering. I laughed so hard I had a coughing fit when Penny hurt herself jumping to conclusions about Silas and Azure. Turkey made for an amazingly sweet nursemaid afterwards. Penny was able to solve this case with a little help from Azure which was amazing in its own right that they were able to get over past differences so quickly. I'm looking forward to more Penny and Max.

'I received an ARC of this book and voluntarily reviewed it.

The series gets better with each book. Though in my opinion it took Penny way too long to figure out who the killer was in this book. It was quite obvious at the very beginning of this book who the killer was. The reason now that was a different story. I am happy that the whole Penny and Max relationship is finally moving in the right direction. I do look forward to seeing Penny grow and mature more in the coming books. I can't wait to see where everyone's lives goes from here. Hoping it will only get better.

First, you really should read this series in order, even as this book can be read as a stand-alone story. There are so much fun to have if you do this :)

Now, onto the story. I really liked it, that goes without saying. And we have here is Penny trying to get her P.I.'s licence renewed (with the help of her familiar Turkey, which I shamelessly adore) and solving the murder of one of her boss' friends, Hiroku. Easy peasy :P

This is another light-hearted, funny, very entertaining book in a series that keeps getting better.

I adored this book as Penny is becoming a very talented Private Investigator and also she is really getting the hang of being a witch. This story was a leap in the right direction for Penny and most of the book was Penny solving the murder and what Azure was doing in the Earth Realm. I wish I could have a familiar like Turkey in my life. He is so smart and cute at the same time. Greeting a new familiar in this book was also good. It is really hard to write about the book and not give anything away....so just READ the book. It really was the best in the series so far, in my opinion and I can't wait to see what Penny holds for us in the next book with the rest of her coven.

Love this book. Seeing if Penny gets what's she desires is so fun. This book is easy to read, page turner, everyone can read and has touch of romance. It's suspenseful and hard to put down it's that good. I highly recommend it and will read again and have.

Title:
PI needs to study

Well another book and another case. Starting with a refresher exam on Penny s PI work. On the way home from celebrating the end of the exam, she walks in on the case.

And so starts her investigation. She starts off with a small group of suspects, except she hasn t learned yet: To always assume that there is one or two more than you originally thought. You can always eliminate them from your investigation or other circumstances down the road, but it will usually save aggravation.

After arriving home, she discovered that someone took her ASBW book {My bet would be her exam instructor Nadia Thomas when she was waiting for Penny to change}.

By this point, you ll be able to think of at least one other person/suspect. She dances all around the extra suspect and yet she s totally oblivious to the person. She really needs to work on her PI skills.

Since one of the steps for the Spell of this book is to intentionally forget, is it possible that they ve all misplaced or lost their copies of the ASBW book for a reason?

Obviously Penny doesn know how to think like a crook. If the tape stretches -you unlock the door- duck under the tape, and go in. Unless Hillcrest is very unique, the door opens inward. It is supposed to be a town in Colorado. Scandinavian societies have doors that open outward as a rule.

Her former boyfriend doesn t believe in either witches or magic. Why does she try to explain it to him. Especially a police officer, who, if they are any good, are natural skeptics.

If anyone who is a police officer believes in either, they have to keep it buried or they ll lose their rank and position. If you do use everything you have grown up with, following your “hunches” is acceptable. However, back it up with solid police work.

So she gives her ex boyfriend one of her suspects and a very plausible case against him that doesn t require magic to prove in a court. Effectively throwing him under the jail for premeditated murder. The fact that she handed everything to a cop doesn t even enter her naive brain? Does she even have a brain?

How this will affect her friend and her pregnancy with her blabbering mouth is anyone s guess.

Why does Penny jump to conclusions? Especially with too little information.

It goes on from here, but you ll have to read it for yourself.

I really was a little frustrated about this one at first (I’ll discuss below), but I eventually became more hooked and anxious to see the conclusion. Things are starting to get more serious for Penny and her coven of beginning witches, and they get a true big test this time, although it seemed to be mostly Penny handling things this go round. They’re obviously going to need to really hunker down on their lessons in future books as things get more intense. The end was pretty nail-biting and more intense and kept you wanting to read to see how things turned out. In general, a really good book except for below for me.
I did have a big concern about this book while reading it, and I’ve seen it mentioned in reviews of other books, and I feel it’s time to address it. At the end of the last book, Penny went through a big change at the end. Away with the almost ditzy, always thinking back and forth about the same men in her life, extremely nonobservant detective Penny…After doing a spell, she seemed to mature and grow as a person in a huge way that was awesome to see. So I was expecting, and looking forward to, seeing that side of her going into this book. But instead we seemed to be back to the old Penny, who seems to run on her fortunate luck more than anything, not being serious about her witch studies, brooding over men in her life again, and things that were extremely obvious about her case seemed to just pass her by (I actually figured out who the culprit would turn out to be immediately after the crime happened, so the ending was not really a surprise). I was frankly really disappointed and getting frustrated with her. Near the end, there is a pretty dramatic event, and she again takes another leap towards becoming a stronger person and changes some more. At that point, I was happy and am hopeful this time the author will let her retain her growth as a person and stop with so much backpedaling. As serious as things are with the portal/gateway the coven is supposed to be watching (although they’ve barely paid any attention to it), it just seems odd that someone would go through what she keeps going through and not at least show a little more change or progression with the next case.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I am an ARC for this book offering to write an honest and frank review which I have provided.
Penny has done it again, getting herself all wound up because she has so many scenarios buzzing around in her head. Firstly, she receives advice that her PI Licence has to be renewed very soon and it will cost her a lot of money and for one who is not working and has no regular income it is not welcome news. A tester arrives to check her out and she is very puzzled about this person, all made clear later in the story. Secondly, Penny discovers her valuable witches book and the copies she made and gave to her knitting circle friends have all gone missing. Thirdly, when checking out events with her very good friend Cora another one of the Witches Coven, they find a body in an office sending her mind into even more chaos. Several additional events and pieces of news send her mind spinning even more and then along comes her familiar Turkey and sits with her offering sound advice for her to get her mind around the serious situations. Penny is really quite an intelligent witch but just needs to slow down and think through issues that present to her. The plot/s develop nicely and keep you guessing where to next with this story. Maybe a big surprise, has Penny found love at last, guess we will find out in the next in the series.
I really enjoyed this story, one has to let your mind go and be bewitched, after all, how do you know that witches do not exist. I find this series very entertaining and is a nice change from the other raft of the usual stories we see for reading-something different which is great.
Having read the previous two stories too, gives you a deeper insight into the books characters, however, the author quite easily lets you know who they are really, quite easily.
Thanks Amorette.

The writing was good and the characters are becoming more like people I know. Even Chris is beginning to come around though I'm glad that he didn't feature prominently in this book. How much do I love Turkey? Words cannot begin to describe how much I love him. He's a really good kitty cat and he tries to help Penny out (and usually succeeds). But why do I have the feeling that Turkey knows a lot more about witches and witchcraft than he is letting on? Could it be because he cast a pretty high-level spell with little or no effort? :)

I am so glad that Penny is getting together with Max. He suits her much better and he understands her way more than Chris ever did. I wasn't sure how the desire spell was going to help solve the mystery of who killed Cora's boss and why but somehow it did.

If there was one thing I would complain about a teeny tiny bit is that the relationship between Silas and Azure was no mystery. It jumped out at me very early on. I'm also glad that Azure and Penny are getting along and dare I hope that she will join the knitting group at some future time? Maybe with Cora having a baby and being involved with raising the child and dealing with a new husband, she won't have time to come and knit and so Azure will take her place. Not take her place completely because Penny needs all her friends but let's face it a new baby and new husband when you're not exactly young... is going to put Cora under a lot of stress and keep her very very busy.

I'm glad that Penny learned to ride her brook quite easily. Something had to come easy to that girl and this was just perfect.

And so I am on to the 4th book in the series. :) I hope it's as good as the first three.

The girls are back and going strong in this third Hillcrest witch cozy. For a quiet small town in Colorado, Hillcrest is full of fun, fantastic creatures, and murder. If you want a quiet evening being entertained by a zany but lovable group of characters, try out this series.

Penny’s coven is ready for the third cycle in the guide book to becoming witches, The Art and Science of Becoming a Witch. However they run into trouble when all copies of their book disappear. Who could be stealing the precious books and why?

Fortunately for them all, Turkey, Penny's cat familiar, remembers a spell to lock the portal, hopefully ensuring that the culprit can’t leave the Earth realm. There are a lot of suspects. Max, the vampire, once tried to buy the book from Penny, Azure, the Air realm witch, tried to steal it, and though Penny wants to trust Silas, the werewolf, especially now that he is in a relationship with her coven sister, Cora, he is the other new person in town who knows about the book.

Then when Cora’s employer ends up murdered things get even more complicated. Hillcrest is too small for the crimes to be unconnected. Why would anyone want to kill the lawyer? Silas may have a motive since she was representing the Historical Society to try and save a building on land he has purchased, but what about the others?

On top of all else, Penny has been a PI for five years and her license is up for renewal. If she doesn’t pass a review exam by Friday, she will lose her right to conduct investigations! Can Penny come out on top with all these things happening at once?

Case of The Desire Spell is Book 3 of the Hillcrest Witch Cozy Mystery series. This as well as the preceding two books are very well written and has lots of well developed quirky characters. In this book Penny (MC) has four things going on:
1. Penny is informed by Turkey, her intelligent, telepathic familiar who is a cat, that she has only days to renew her PI license which is going to cost her as it is not cheap.
2. There has been a murder (her best friends boss) needing to be solved.
3. Disapearance of Penny's BSBW as well as all the copies.
4. Accomplishment of the Desire Spell.
Can Penny renew her PI license on time; she and her cohorts solve the murder as well as find the missing BSBWs; and Penny achieve casting the Desire Spell? You must read the book so see if and how they are achieved. This is a light-hearted and interesting book and series to read and just to let you know it is best to read them in series. Doing so will add to your reading enjoyment. It will be interesting to see what adventure Ms. Anderson takes Penny and her cohorts next. This is an easy book and series for me to recommend. Received a copy and this is my voluntary and honest review.

This is a fun read series. Penny stumples upon the murdered body of the only lawyer in town & the clues lead the police into arresting Cora's fiance, whom she's only known about a month. He certainly had a motive, but then so did others. Penny does not want to believe he's guilty, but the Penny way is to look at everything, & keep all those suspect on the table until such a time she can eliminate them. This of course not not go over well with Cora, who stands firm on his innocence, regardless. Did I mention her PI license is about to expire? And she only has a week to renew...so says her cat who found out online. And right after she finishes her renewal exam, she discovers that not only is her Book missing, but so are all the copies she gave to her coven. Looks like somebody is out to stop them from becoming witches. Will they find the book? or at least remember the spell? Will they find the killer?

More luck than judgement

This series is now getting silly. No-one can be as ditsy as the heroine, surely? The answer to who was responsible was obvious from the start and her bumbling efforts to get to the truth have really started to annoy me. Come on can't we get back to were she at least tries to act as if she can think!
Her PI licence is up for renewal. Cora's has just announced that not only is she engaged but she's also pregnant. Therefore not having time to brush up on her technique, she is surprised to hear that she has passed when she knows that she should have failed. Worse, Cora's boss has been murdered and copy of the witch training book have all been stolen. Her efforts to investigate have only led to Cora's fiance getting arrested. Can she find the real culprit? Will they find the book?

Penny discovers that her private investigator’s license is about to expire and she must take and pass a field exam. She doesn’t start the exam out on the right foot and soon discovers she is going from bad to worse, but someone she receives a passing score. Penny soon finds out that her investigator skills are needed close to home when the spell books and its duplicates are missing. What’s more, a local lawyer is mysteriously killed and her crush vampire Max along with best pal’s werewolf beau Silas seem to be on the top of the suspect list.

As usual, a mystery has fallen into Penny’s lap and the biggest mystery is that she seems to once again solve it. I found myself laughing out loud, shaking my head with disbelief (Penny really is a horrible PI), and hoping that Penny can trust and learn the desire spell to help her solve the case.

As with all the previous books in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one. Penny and her coven of witches in training are celebrating because one of them, Cora, has given them some great news. Penny finds out that her PI License is due for renewal and she has to do a practical exam. These cost money that she doesn't have. The person who shows up to conduct her exam seems a bit off, but although Penny thinks she has blown the exam, she gets a pass. Very strange. Penny finds that her copy of the witches manual is missing and when she talks to the others in coven, their copies are also missing. Whilst walking home after a meeting, Penny and Marley find someone murdered. It seems that all these strange things are somehow connected.

I received this as an ARC for an honest review.
This is book number 3 in the series. I can honestly day I'm hooked on the series.
Penny is a PI who has a license but her familiar Turkey informs her it's up for a review. Strange things start happening and Penny is trying to piece things together. The Earth Coven is still learning about being witches when their 'instruction ' book disappears and all of the copies, too. Who steals them and why has Penny and her knitting circle scratching their heads. And if that's not enough mystery a dead body is found by Penny. Green smoke and green lightening appears and the race is on to solve the mysteries. Are they connected????? Read the book to find out.

I received this ARC for an honest review. This is a fun mystery mixed with some witchcraft, and a handsome vampire. It's an engaging story, that grabbed my interest immediately. Penny is a likable character, flawed, but caring, discovering qualities about herself as she discovers her abilities as a witch and clues to solve a murder and several thefts. She's surrounded by close friends, sharing adventures and enjoying each others company, and her closest companion is Turkey, her cat who gives her the emotional and moral support she needs, while mentoring her in her investigations and witching lessons. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and look forward to the next one, to see what situations Penny finds herself in.

Each book I read in this series just gets better. Penny has so much going on in this book. First Turkey informs her that she has to take a test to keep her PI license and its not free. There is a murder in Hillcrest and its connected to the disappearance of Penny's ASBW and all the coven's copies. Cora and Penny are having issues that could destroy the coven if Penny doesn't solve the murder. To top it all off Penny finally figures out how to cast the Desire Spell enabling her to make a decision on what she wants as far as her love life is concerned. If you want to find out how this all ends and who stole the ASBW and committed the murder, buy the book, its well worth it. I was given an ARC and am posting an honest and unbiased review because I want to.

This, the third book in the Hillcrest Witch series, continues Penny's adventures as both an amateur P.I. and a beginner witch just learning her craft.

Desire Spell narrates the trials and tribulations of Penny trying to renew her P.I. license in just a few days' time, and solve the murder of her dear friend's boss at the same time.

Fill of quirky characters involved in awkward situations, this will leave you smiling at Penny's antics. Not to mention her familiar, Turkey the (very intelligent and telepathic) Cat!

A lighthearted, fast-reading series, each book can stand alone, but is best read in order. Highly recommended!

I received and ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion. I like it so much, I also bought a copy!

Books 3.
The Case of the Desire Spell by Amorette Anderson.

I enjoyed this book very much. This book was about another murder, this time the one who got killed was a lawyer in her office and she was found by none other than Penny. She has to think fast and she thinks the culprit is a magical being, but not quite certain who it is.

When she starts investigating, as usual, she gets into trouble, so she has to get herself out of it. She rounds up her coven and Turkey, as well as Azure, and together they are able to solve the case, and she gets her book back and keep the portal safe.

She keeps growing in her magic skills, and as she grows, the Desire Spells takes effect, and that is exactly when she knows what she wants.

Penny comes across another dead body in her small community... Another mystery to solve but first she has to take an exam to renew her Private Investigator license and she sucks at exams. Turkey her cat tries to help her study but the examiner shows up earlier than planned.
Magical beings are coming through the portal and causing problems so Penny and her coven must try to cast a spell to close the gate of the portal but someone stole her spell book. Turkey comes to the rescue and remembers bits of a spell that closes the gate temporarily.
Penny learns how to ride her broom in this story and how to fight some evil on her own.
Another great cozy mystery, looking forward to Penny and her coven learning their 4th spell in the next book.

When Penny finds out that it is time to renew her PI license, she is caught unawares, and without the money to pay for the renewal, what is she to do? On top of the stress of trying to come up with funds to pay for her PI license renewal, a local attorney has been murdered and her magic book, as well as the copies she’s made her friends are all missing. That can’t be a coincidence. How can she, along with her young coven solve this mystery? And, what is the Desire Spell, and how can that help? I love this series and am enjoying learning more about Penny and her friends. This is my honest, voluntary review of an advanced reader copy of this book.

How to enjoy The Case of the Desire Spell

1. The reader must bathe in a natural water source. If that is not available, a regular bath will do just as well ;)
2. The reader must be alone.
3. The reader must be clear about his or her desires.
4. The reader must practice intentional amnesia.

(Slightly changed spell LOL)

When there’s another murder Penny suspects magical interference. Would Max have something to do with it?

Let yourself be immersed in another fun book! Because this sure was fun once again! Let Penny and her merry band of misfits put a spell on you, as she has done on me.

Loved It

So happy the heroine split with her human police detective boyfriend. He never gave her credit for feeding him the solution to murder cases. Good riddance. Now since I said that, he will probably show up again in future books. But I am not so sure about her new beau, the vampire. He treats her like a child. Well, not always, thankfully. I love how each book in the series is a lesson in the grimoire for making humans into witches. And I love how each lesson is a part of solving the murder mystery. I have now become invested in the characters as evidenced by the fact I want to talk about the story!

How do I get a copy of that book. I want to be a witch too. I wonder what my desire would be for the Desire Spell? Changes every time i try to think about it.

This is my first in this series, so I can definitely say that this book can be read by itself (standalone). There is just enough to understand the past and entice you to go wan to go back and read the previous books. I especially wan to find out her familiar got the name Turkey.

This is a fast fun really cute cozy mystery. I loved it.

This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
