Charms & Chapters

Rate this book
Rory Hawthorn is adjusting to her new life as a witch working at her family's enchanted library in the coastal town of Ivory Beach. Between the library's bewildering magic and her eccentric new family, life is never dull.

When Rory and her cousin find the body of a local wizard on the beach, all the signs suggest he was killed by a vampire. Rory already has very good reason to fear the undead… even if she is developing inconvenient feelings for the local reaper.

But it's not long before her friendship with Xavier draws them both into the investigation, and this time, even the all-knowing library might not have the answers.

Can Rory face her fears and figure out the truth, or will she be the next to fall victim to the killer?

The best thing about this series is the magic system and magic library, but the problem with this second book is there still is little in the way of character development. The books are short and well plotted but I was hoping for more as the series continues.

I read this one because the first three audiobooks were bundled together. I could probably copy and paste my review for the first book for this one. Super cozy mystery. Quick easy read. But not quite enough tension or character development for me. However, book 1 and book 2 are so consistent in formula and tone, I definitely think if you enjoyed the first book, you would enjoy the second. As for me, I think I’m going to stop myself here since these aren’t super up my alley.

After finishing the first book in this series, I knew that I couldn’t wait to dive into the next book, so I decided to jump in and honestly it was well worth the read. I think that Elle Adams is quite talented when it comes to writing and so far I’ve been enjoying reading her work. I do think that if she keeps at what she’s doing with this series then I think that she will go quite far. I have to say that I enjoyed this book a lot more than the first book, but that’s most likely because this book you can see how much her writing has improved and that the story has expanded a hell of a lot. I’m intrigued to see where this series will go because so far I’ve got no idea, but I’m hooked. I still hate the way that Cass is treating Rory because all Rory wants to do is actually get on with her cousin, but Cass is hell bent on making life difficult. I do think that Rory has grown as a person (or young witch, whichever you prefer) and I love that she’s doing her best to come out of her comfort zone and is willing to try new things. Compared to the first book she seemed really scared to do much, but now she’s willing to try anything and is hoping to improve her magic.
I couldn’t find anything to fault with the story or the characters, overall I think that Elle has done a great job and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Rory. I’m hoping there will be more happening for Rory and Xavier as he is such an adorable character.
I would highly recommend trying this series, it might be something that you end up loving.

Rory has been getting all settled in the last few weeks since she arrived to live with her family in the library and honestly Rory has been loving most things that’s there. She’s still having a tough time with Cass, but she’s still trying her hardest to get her to stop messing with her. She’s learning to get better when it comes to her magic and is studying when she needs to. Everything is going well, and she even gets to see Xavier every now and then when he’s not working collecting souls. However, when she spots him standing next to a body that’s been dragged from shore and Xavier mentions the soul has gone missing again, Rory knows that something is a miss and she’s determined to help Xavier out. Will she figure out who the killer is and where the missing soul has gone?? What will happen when Cass ends up vanishing, will everything be alright or will they not get to her in time???

Questions and answers.

Terrific. Great plot with a nice twist at the end but I have a nagging suspicion that the head of the vampire's is going to be a problem. The characters are really more vibrant and vivid in the book and have become quite real in my minds eye.
Getting the kelpie out of the library by levitating his tank might not have been the best idea especially when the tank slips, shatters and he escapes to cause havoc in town before jumping into the sea. Cass however is not amused and retaliation looks as if it might be on the table. But a dead boy in the sea is enough to stop any thoughts she has about Cass. A dead boy that has bite marks on him but no soul. Where did his soul go? Add in a wannabe vampire club, thefts, an interesting fact about the question room, an overbearing vampire leader, a murdered vampire, a talking familiar, the head Grim Reaper and further developments on the romantic front for a most entertaining read. Will they find out how the boy and vampire died? Will they find the person responsible?

This is the second book about a witch who works in a sentient library and is friends with, I guess you'd call him an apprentice Grim Reaper. Anyhow, the library is up to its usual tricks, Cass is up to her usual nasty self, there's problems with the Aspiring Vampire Society, she and Jet have a falling out and there's another case of a murder with the soul missing.

I really like the way the author has brought Rory along in her adjusting to her new life in a paranormal community. There's a good bit of humor balanced by some serious material. I still think Sylvester (the Owl) is a good character and Jet is getting to be more interesting. There's also more about her father's journal and now the head of the actual vampires is interested in seeing it so that could lead to problems in the future.

Still, I think the library is the most interesting part of the series. I think living in a place like that would be a whole lot of fun and educational, of course. That is, if you could survive the library's occasional tricks.

This is the second book in Elle Adams' Library Witch series and I loved it. It was a fun read keeping the reader on their toes. Rory Hawthorn is settling into her new life at the enchanted library in Ivory Beach. When helping her cousin Cass return her rescued kelpie to the sea, Rory sees her Reaper friend Xavier with a body who has seemingly drowned. However, Xavier tells them that the boy's soul is gone. Since that shouldn't have happened, the police are considering it murder and Xavier is looking into the death and Rory helps. When Xavier and Rory discover the body of a local vampire who's also missing his soul they must consider the unthinkable.

I really love this series and am eagerly looking forward to the next book as this is becoming a favorite series.

Another great story

Another great story from Elle Adams. A new author for me and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books
Rory is trying to get used to being a biblio witch...working in her families library in a paranormal town is new to Rory. Not to mention there are still 2 vampires out to get Rory's fathers journal but since it is now in the library it is protected from them.
Rory is attracted to Xavier, apprentice Grim Reaper. But once again Xavier and Rory are in the middle of a murder case where the soul has been stolen from the body...but how?
A grwat story with a little humour and a lot of mystery.
If you love cozy witch mysteries you'll love this light hearted series

Charms & Chapters is the 2nd book in the fun Library Witch cozy paranormal series. Aurora (Rory) finds out she is a biblio-witch and now lives with her 2 Aunts and 2 cousins and she is learning how to be a Witch. They all live and work in a magical Library. In this book, Rory and Estelle find a local student dead with vampire fang marks. Rory's sort-of boyfriend Xavier is a reaper and is supposed to collect the soul but it is gone. They work together along with Estelle to figure out what is going on. It is a fairly light-hearted paranormal cozy mystery with likable characters (not sure about Cass) and an ending that kept me guessing. Quite enjoyable! #Charms&Chapters

Book Two continues very nicely to add to Aurora’s knowledge of the library, her magic, and the spooky beings who inhabit her new town.

The character development is very well written. The world building is done in such a way that the author only has to give me a couple of sentences and my imagination builds the rest. I am in love with this little English seaside town.

Of course there is murder, broken and new romances. Kelpies escaping inside the library. And Rory learned how to supercharge her spells!

While this book ends with a satisfactory conclusion to the “who-dunnit” part of the story, the author adds an amazing teaser that makes me want to download and read book three right now!

Reap What You Sow

Elle Adams has done it again with the second book in her library series. Rory is as meddlesome as ever, but can you really have a cozy mystery without a busybody? For new readers, Ms Adams is British: when you think that she’s misspelled a word, it’s most likely the British spelling. I did catch one major error: Rory didn’t ask Dominic her question out loud at the hospital; she thought it at him; therefore, the killer could not have overheard them.

I highly recommend this series to your attention. 👍

Better and Better

This is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I love the give and takes between Rory, Cass, Sylvester and Jet. The library is amazing. The situations Rory finds herself in are very funny. I wonder where her friendship with Xavier is heading. Can’t wait to read the next book. 😊😊😊

I genuinely liked this more than the first in the series, partly because things got going much more quickly and partly because I just felt like the characters and the relationships were starting to come together. It's certainly one of my favourites I've read within its genre, and even though there were discoveries that stretched credulity, my overall pleasure in reading it made up for that.

Imagination and whimsy

The Library Witch series has some of the most unique paranormal features of any cozy series. The library is one giant imagination factory it seems. This book has everything from magical creatures to a library that changes daily or by the minute sometimes. You won't be disappointed if you like paranormal cozy books.

59% dnf. - I just don't have the patience. Seemed like it'd be good, but the cousin is a beeotch and it's getting annoying. Her "studies" are never mentioned, and it would be fun to see her learn more, not just use it randomly in hopes of help, and then chaos ensues and everyone's mad at the newbie, who isn't even being taught. Maybe when I'm in a different mood, I'll finish one day.

Another enjoyable reading experience!

Elle has created a cozy mystery with great characters and an interesting plot twist. Whenever the action slows, another dead body turns up! The library which is at the center of all the activity and she keeps evolving as a witch and as a significant character. I am ready to read the next story in the series.

Fun & Imaginative!

This book was a fun read and a good follow up to Book1. Rory is trying desperately to fit into her new life, but there always seem to be obstacles, such as Sylvester, the family familiar, and her newly discovered cousin, Cass. However, murder seems to be lurking around every corner! If you enjoyed Book 1, you should really like Book 2!

Started reading the second book directly after the first one which resulted in me abandoning the series I was originally reading because that one was getting stale.

Rory is growing as a witch and a fast learner. She's trying to leave her comfort zone and tries to improve her magic skills. Her cousin Cass is still making life difficult for her and constantly treats her bad or pranks her. Rory has a crush on the Grim Reapers apprentice Xavier. Will be interesting to see if there's more happening in the future.

The magic library and the magic system is quite unique and since I liked the "The Quest" movies/ "The Librarians" series, this series has me hooked.

I enjoyed this story. It is light-hearted, fun, and yes scary in a few places, but nothing like a horror novel. The characters are intelligent with great morals, yet make a few mistakes, the plot is easily followed, and the premise is finding out why a student was killed and how. The answer is a doozy. I definitely recommend this book.

Fun with a dark twist

This book prominently features talk of vampires and the Grim Reaper. Rory is getting better with her magic and her feud with Cass escalates. I'm not a fan of Cass, she's just downright mean. I do like Xavier and I hope Rory and he do date.

Charms for everything!

Rory is definitely in question mode throughout this book. How to do this, when to do that. How to hide your thoughts from the Vampires? Very enjoyable reading.

Thank you

For an enjoyable read I say thank you. Also thank you for NOT making your main character a whiny sissy baby! I truly appreciate that. She has a mind and thinks and doesn’t self doubt like too many others have their heroine do. I look forward to more fun adventures.

Sad

Shame about the constant negativity from her family members, because this could have been a good book. It is a constant theme through Ellie Adam's books and unwarranted in most places.

Excellent

Rory is catching on quick to being a witch, and with both her cousins and her two aunts she will be awesome. But not sure if she is going to keep finding dead bodies and figuring out the murderer.
