A Cry in the Dark

Rate this book
A woman on the run with no one to trust.

With the ink barely dry on her new identity, Cary Moore just wants to disappear…but fate has other plans.

Broken down car, next to nothing in her bank account, Carly is stuck in a Smoky Mountain town that time has forgotten. Drum is riddled with secrets and outsiders are eyed with distrust. Still, it isn’t until she witnesses a cold-blooded murder in a darkened parking lot, that she realizes she’s escaped one nightmare, only to land in another.

As the clock ticks down and more bodies pile up, Carly doesn’t know who to trust. If she doesn’t stop the killers, they just might stop her…permanently.

A Cry in the Dark is book one in the Carly Moore series by Denise Grover Swank. I’ve been wanting to start this series for some time now. I suspected and was right that I was going to love it and now that I’ve just a few minutes ago read the last page, I think that is an understatement. This…book…is…AMAZING!

Carly Moore is thirty one years old and is on the run. I don’t want to tell you much about why, only that it’s imperative to her continued life! She’s in an old clunker car which has just given out on her while enjoying the view at an overlook in the mountains. Her rescue lands her in a town that time seems to have forgotten. The tiny mountain town of Drum. Barely any internet, no cell service, it’s a town that’s clearly seen better days. All Carly wants is to get her car fixed and get back on the road. But fate has other plans for her.

“You’re a bundle of surprises, Carly Moore. I’m gonna like havin’ you around.”

While Carly waits for her car to be repaired she is offered to do some temporary waitressing at the local bar and restaurant owned by Max Drummond. It’s Max’s brother Wyatt, who rescued her in his tow truck. And it’s Wyatt that’s waking up her heart more than she is comfortable with. Because Carly can’t afford to let her heart wake up. She needs to get her car fixed and hit the road.

Only, the town of Drum has other plans. Carly witnesses something awful which puts her right in the middle of a very dark set of events. Events that threaten her own safety and the safety of the few people that have been kind to her since she arrived.

This book had me turning the pages as fast as my eyes could read the words. Carly is such a strong woman and faces each threat head on, nose to nose. The Drummond brothers are wonderful, even though it doesn’t seem they turned out that way from their father’s parenting. I liked one in particular but I don’t want to share that with you. Carly has so much on her shoulders but she tackles each thing and just keeps on each day. She’s loyal, hard working and has such a huge heart.

“I think we both deserve a little happiness, don’t you? I’d like to find my happiness with you.”
“I want to find it with you too.”

This is a suspenseful but also sweet story with characters you will love and be cheering for and some others that you will want to squish like a bug! Clearly I have strong feelings about these characters. I will soon be jumping into the next book in the series, Her Scream in the Silence. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Carly Moore.

4⭐
Genre ~ mystery suspense
Series ~ Carly Moore
Setting ~ Tennessee
Publication date ~ November 12, 2019
Est Page Count ~ 388 (32 chapters )
Audio length ~ 10 hours 48 minutes
Narrator ~ Shannon McManus
POV ~ single 1st
Featuring ~ small town, murder, drugs, corruption

Carly (31) has just gotten a new identity and is on the run. Her car breaks down and it looks like she’s stuck in Tennessee for a few days while it gets fixed. After witnessing a murder she’s worried she’ll be found by some very powerful people.

And thus sets forth this fast paced read with non stop action trying to figure out who killed Seth and why. It’s so descriptive that I felt like I was right there in the midst of the action, especially with the truck on the hill. A good mix of great and not so great characters, of course, which is usually how it is with small town books. Most of the townsfolk are not too pleased that she’s in town. But Max gives her a job and a place to stay and Ruth is just the type of friend you need when you leave your other ones behind. Hank, grandfather of our murder victim, was a great, take no crap type of old man.

I found Carly to be a strong, independent character that can hold her own. There’s a budding romance with Wyatt, who is a bit rough around the edges and just got out of prison. I’m guessing their relationship will kick into a higher speed as the series continues.

Overall, a great series starter that is complete with 7 books.

Narration notes:
She did a fabulous job differentiating her voice for all characters.

What a great start to a new series! We met Carly briefly in a couple of Rose Gardner Investigates books, and we got to know how sweet and caring she could be. That comes across again in spades and shows us that Carly is truly a goodhearted woman. I believe even Rose would be very proud of Carly Moore and how she handled herself since moving on from Henryetta.

Carly is on the run, and not like you think, it's not the law that she is running from. She seems to have terrible luck with cars and is stuck in the small town of Drum. With what she has been through already, she finds if very hard to trust anyone. Anybody could work out who she is and alert the wrong people. On her first night in town, she witness a murder that unravels a whole load of trouble, and not just for Carly.

I loved it! Really loved it. If you like a good mystery that has you thinking and wondering what is going to happen next, and has you saying out loud, OMG, then this is the new series for you. It is a classic Denise Grover Swank novel, so that means you will get those rich and bona fide characters from her that we adore. I started this book, and literally got annoyed every time I got interrupted. I considered forgoing my dental appointment just so I could finish it. As luck had it, I couldn't put it down all morning, so I had it finished in no time. All the characters will keep you entertained and some you will love just as much as Carly does. Some, are not so savoury and this makes for a very interesting book indeed. This book has one major mystery that is following Carly wherever she goes, and will take a few books to solve, but it also has another mystery that gets a conclusion in this first book. If you are a fan of DGS, Rose and Neely Kate, you will simply cherish Carly and how she has grown from living with Rose.

Wow! What an incredibly amazing start of new series! Carly's got her own series which made me fall in love from first chapter. Thank you Denise Grover Swank for giving us a whole lot new realistic characters to love! Yes, I love them and they quickly became my new friends. Carly, Wyatt, Hank, Max, Ruth and more. Loved how each one of them was different but so real, strong. Loved how they all took Carly as their own!
This first book kept me on the edge of my seat literally non stop. I couldn't put it down, and when I had to, I was worried something might happen without me! Really!! Story line with so many twists and turns makes you not to trust anyone, and yes, there were moments I suspected almost everyone!
Okay, you must discover everything by yourself so get this book and enjoy! You are going to fall in love with it! This book has everything you want for a really great mystery and more!

Oh. My. Gosh.
STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND GO BUY THIS BOOK!

This was hands down one of my favorite books by Denise Grover Swank. The mystery. The suspense. The romance. The open ended ending leaving room for a whole slew of more books for this series.

Don’t wait for this series to be completed until you read it, you’re going to want to read it as soon as you can. You won’t regret it.

Branching off with Carly in her own series, the poor girl is faced with challenges right away. She unfortunately doesn’t get an easy way out, after her leave from her friends in Arkansas. She ends up in Drum, Tennessee where a whole bunch of things start happening... not adding up.

At first you’re not sure who to trust, but Denise Grover Swank knows how to pull you in with her characters and also throw you curve balls!

Chapter 17, when you get there... oh my Lordy was my heart beating fast! After that, I couldn’t put the book down.

Seriously, if you can only buy one book right now, take the dive on this one. You won’t be disappointed in the slightest!

Are you a fan of Rose’s series? Then you’ll also love Carly’s new book. I may go back and re-read Carly’s amazing story. But I’m also anxious for the next book in her series!

What are you waiting for? Go grab this absolute 5 star review of A Cry In The Dark!!

3 Very Meh Stars

This started well enough and I got cosy on my sofa ready for a lovely read, but the murder, danger and mystery forming this book didn't weave a spell that I fell under and after the half way point had to force myself to finish.

A whole new series by Denise Grover Swank means a whole new cast of characters. At the center is our heroine Charlene Moore, aka Carly. In a town full of secrets which of these individuals Carly trust?
I enjoyed this story from the first page. Sparks between Carly and Wyatt were apparent from their first meeting, but circumstances have the two keeping each other at arms length. Within 24 hours of her arrival, Carly becomes entangled in a mystery surrounding the murder of a local boy. As Carly interacts with the residents of Drum, we see her strength of character.
Fans of Denise's writing know she writes kick butt heroines who are not afraid to stand up for the right thing, even when the right thing might put her in danger. Carly is all that and more.
The conclusion of this story only left me wanting more answers and more insight to the residents of Drum. I can’t wait for the next book in the Carly Moore series!

Good story ... 3.5 Stars
This was my fist book with this author, so I had no background with the Carly Moore character. I feel like this may have made a difference in my opinion. The story was good, but I found it hard to connect with the characters. I think if I had read some of the earlier series that introduced Carly Moore I may have been more invested.

Wow wow wow!!

Where do I begin?!! Pick this new series up. It is absolutely out of this world!! I was unable to put this book down and when I had too, (because of mommy duties) I was constantly thinking about the book and what on earth was Carly going to do!!
This series follows Carly as she travels to her new destination. My jaw dropped several times while reading, and I had a rollercoaster of emotions. I was literally on the edge of my seat. It’s such a nail biter! SO freakin good! If you love a good mystery book, pick this book up!! You will not be disappointed. I absolutely loved it!!
Looking forward to book 2, Her Scream in the Silence!!

A good murder mystery series to get into. You have two storylines, the first one is about the Heroine fleeing her old life and the second one is about the murders that are happening in the small town. I like the flow of the read. I thought the characters needed a little more character development, but the small town feel sets the mood for the book.

I liked having it on in the background while I worked and since I have been in a mysterious mood lately, it hit that spot.

I absolutely LOVED this book! Thank you Denise Grover Swank for introducing us to Carly through the Rose books and now giving Carly her own world! I loved every character in this book. It was also great to see Carly's character mature and grow as she begins to accept her new identity. There is a wonderful love interest and a great supporting cast.
Carly has car trouble once again and it thrusts her into a world and a place filled with strangers. She struggles to remember and keep her new identity and lies while building trust in complete strangers. Carly lucks out and runs into a really wonderful trustworthy, handsome, man whose family has plenty of their own secrets. This is just a page turner and a great read. If you love stories about corruption, murder, strong women, and the men who support and help protect them this is a great story for you!

This book follows Carly Moore to Drum, Tennessee. Carly is on the run, hiding from her powerful father after she found out his secrets. When her car breaks down she has no choice but to stay a while. She wakes up to a noise outside and witnesses a ruthless murder. Carly is the only one who can bring justice for Seth and she is determined to take care of everyone along the way.

Carly is a sweet southern badass. I want to be her when I grow up. She's no damsel in distress, she is the hero! Of course I devoured this book as quickly as possible. It kept my attention so well I wouldn't have been able to put it down even if I had wanted to. My heart broke for Hank and Wyatt, you could feel their pain. DGS is so good at writing realistic characters. None of them are perfect but you love them for their flaws. And I really love Carly's new family.

*This book is a spin-off of the Rose Gardner Investigations series but it's not necessary to read those books first. It has plenty of background information and is a totally different story. That being said, if you like mysteries and enjoy this book then you should definitely go back and start with Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes.*

Yet another fabulous badass, strong, kind woman to add to Denise’s ever-growing list of series! I just love Carly. I immediately liked her when she was introduced into Rose’s series and the start of her own series continues to show why I adore her. This is a great start to what should be an excellent series. I immediately fell for all of Carly’s friends in Drum. Especially Wyatt! There’s lots of mystery and suspense tangled throughout the book, with a touch of the feels and romance. I was so interested in the story. You know when you give up time that you could be napping while on call at work to read a book that it’s a good one! I also love the Rose-ish feel to this series. Although Carly is a spin-off from Rose, it’s not necessary to have read the Rose Gardner books. But if you have, definitely read Carly’s series! (I mean, even if you have no idea who Rose Gardner is - still read this. It’s fab. And then you’ll probably want to also read Rose if you haven’t. 😉) Looking forward to watching the series develop and learning more about Carly and the people of Drum, TN!

Oh my goodness!!!!

When Carly joined the crew in Henryetta, I knew I was going to like her and want to know more. I was thrilled when I found out Denise Grover Swank gave her her own spin-off series.

Carly ends up stranded in a small town called Drum, Tennessee but small doesn't mean quiet. From the moment she arrives, a series of terrible things start happening around the town. Carly can't help but get caught up in the middle of it, but can she really afford all the extra attention?

A Cry in the Dark has the same wonderful writing style as the Rose Gardner books we all know and love, with the flair of Darling Investigations and Magnolia Steele. I could NOT put this book down and I will now be spending the next 4 months waiting impatiently for the next one. ♡

Hooked me at the first sentence.
What I love the most about this book is that it is unpredictable. Most stories you know what will happen in the end, this one has surprises and suspense throughout. This was an amazing book and I plan to read it over again since I enjoyed it that much.

Carly is on her way to where she feels she can start a new life with her hidden secrets. Only on her way she is stranded in a small town in Tennessee which has secrets of it’s own. Big ones.
Wyatt is a handsome, brooding, mysterious man. With everyone in the close nit town, You are not sure who can you can trust and who is dangerous. Hanging on the edge with every turn of the page.
You won’t be disappointed with “A Cry in the Dark”.

I absolutely LOVE Carly....

Loved her while she lived with Rose Gardner, but Love her even more out on her own.

And can I just say, that having Wyatt and Max two HOT brothers protecting her, is not a bad thing.

I knew she has a tough road ahead of her, but I think her new friends are up for the challenge to help her through it....

Can't wait for book 2!

Absolutely Amazing! I could not wait to read a new series from DGS especially after she gave a sneak peek of the first 2 chapters in her email! DGS first introduced us to Carly through Rose and I am so glad that Carly has her own series after leaving Arkansas. I was hooked from the beginning. Carly is running from her past. Carly finds herself in a new town with new people not knowing who to trust and new secrets! I spent the entire evening in Drum, TN lost in Carly’s world and was unable to put down the novel! I loved the twists and kept trying to guess who to trust (thankful that one I was leery of was trustworthy at the end)! I can’t wait for more of Carly!

I absolutely loved A Cry In The Dark. The characters are amazing. I loved getting to know Carly better. Wyatt is a wonderful leading man. Hank, Max, Ruth, and Tiny are all interesting, funny, caring, and I cant wait to learn more about them all. The story had great momentum and kept me guessing and interested. A Cry in the Dark is written so that it is not necessary to read the Rose Gardner books to understand Carly's back story. I loved Carly's story as much as I love Rose. I am so excited to read more of Carly's story and revisit Wyatt and her new Drum TN friends.

I loved Carly in the other stories and was so excited to learn that she was getting her own series. And let me tell you, this book does not disappoint at all. In true form you will be on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Once you start reading it you will be drawn in, and will not be able to put it down until you have devoured the entire thing. The characters, story and everything about it are just amazing. I need more.
Seriously why aren't you reading it now

Y’all, this new series is absolutely incredible! Denise knocked it out of the park with A Cry in the Dark. Carly is on the run with a brand new identity, when she finds herself stuck in another small town, called Drum, Tennessee. She thought she escaped the world of crime and murder after leaving Henryetta, but it appears things are just getting started in this Smoky Mountain town. If you’re a Rose fan, you’re definitely going to want to read Carlys story! They have so many similarities and trust me, you will love her just as much. Here’s to hoping for many more Carly books in the future!

This is the first book in the new spin off series from the Rose Gardener series. Carly has been on the run for months. She found safety with Rose for a bit, but she had to run again. That’s where this book starts. With plenty of drama Carly’s story is pretty fantastic. I’m giving it four stars because I wanted more chemistry between the main characters. The characters are great.

This was good. Jumps right in. Kept you guessing who the bad guys are until the very end. You think you know then you don’t know. So it held my attention. It was a mystery, slow burn without much burn. Guess they are saving that for the next one? Or maybe this author is more prominently a mystery writer?
Unanswered questions about the MCs past but I’m sure those are also for the rest of the series. Good character development. I’ll go back for more.

A new series by Denise and another winner in my book. This story follows Carly as she leave Arkansas and travels through Tennessee. Only her journey is just getting started. A car mishap, and a murder keep her stationary.

This story is captivating. The only reason I didn’t finish last night was because I was so very tired. I could feel the fear, the anguish and the pain that Hank went through. And at the same time, I could feel the determination of Carly to want to try and help.

Denise has written a book that has me need more!! Start this book now!

I am so happy we got Carly's story. She has grown more then I expected her to. I hope she is in a safe town now. I think she will always miss Rose and them but she now is ready to move on. Wyatt and Max are both great new book boyfriends. I kind of like Tiny also. It is going to be fun growing with theses new books and learning what things they know.

This book is amazing! The main character is Carly from the Rose Series. She has left Arkansas and is lost in Tennessee. She is trying to get to Wilmington but she has car trouble again. We get to meet an entire new cast of characters. They are a great bunch, and I can't wait to find out more about them. This book was exciting, and intense. It is a great start to a great new series!!
