Amish Generations: Four Stories

Rate this book
Four sweet and funny Amish love stories, spanning four different generations. Love comes at all times and for all ages! Young Love— When Fern was diagnosed with a chronic illness in her early twenties, she knew it would limit her abilities to be a good Amish wife. And with Dan, the object of her affection, in a serious relationship, there didn’t seem much point in dating. But Dan is now single, and he seems to be taking notice of Fern. She’ll need a strong dose of courage to talk down the fear her illness has brought on if she ever wants to pursue her dreams. L ong-Awaited Love —When Everett left ten years ago, Jemima’s love quickly turned to hate. But when they arrive back home at the same bus station on the same day, they discover some old flames aren’t put out so easily. Can they move past the forces that pulled them apart ten years ago, or are some hurts too much to overcome? Second-Chance Love —Benjamin and Lora Beth both lost spouses not long into their young marriages and connect over letters, exchanging recipes and commiseration as their now-grown children try to coddle them. They’re only in their forties, for heaven’s sake! The letters quickly reveal a deep friendship . . . or could it be more? When you’ve already had a great love, how do you learn to fall in love again? Never Too Late— Jerald is a committed old bachelor. He loves nothing more than good Amish food and giving his best friend’s wife, Regina, a hard time. When people have asked—and believe him, people have asked—he’s always said he’ll marry when he finds the right woman. It’s just never happened in his seventy years. Until he tastes the best blueberry pie and discovers the woman behind Regina’s best friend, Elva.

While there were snippets of good writing; ultimately every conversation every outing every moment revolved around romance. I’m just looking for a more balanced read with community, fellowship, laughter and maybe a light dose of love; and for goodness sake less drama!!

What a great anthology! Here are four sweet stories of love for Amish couples of various generations. I absolutely loved it. I would like to make one brief observation. At the beginning of the book the author translated specific Amish words. Because I have read over a dozen of these stories over the past year or so, I already know what these words meant. Of course, I am a different faith but there’s just something about these stories that is so compelling.

Young Love - Fern worries about her chronic illness and how it has prevented her from embarking on a teaching career - and finding love. But there is Dan, and although she is more than drawn to him, she worries that her health will prevent her from becoming a good Amish wife.

Long-Awaited Love - Jemima never forgave Everett from moving away ten years ago and breaking her heart. Her anger is crowded by her still overwhelming attraction to him. Can Jemima forgive Dan and the pair finally find love?

Second-Chance Love - Benjamin and Lora Beth were once happily married and now they have adult children. They are also both now widowed and have begun writing letters to each other to share recipes. A strong friendship has become to develop between them. Could these letters be the beginning on a sweet second chance love for the both of them?

Never Too Late - In this incredibly sweet short story, Jerald is a pleasant bachelor in his seventies. He has never found the right woman. However, one bite of the most delicious blueberry pie Jerald has ever tasted leads hm to meeting the woman who created the culinary delight, Elva. The pie might have been what brought Jerald and Elva together, but her beauty and kindness leads to much more. The story was rather sensitive and I love how these two came together.

These short stories show how love at different times comes to people who deserve to be together. Of course they are bound by their faith, but in each case they found something about each other that brought them together. With the theme being generations, it proved true that love can come at any time in someone’s life. I found each story to be so wonderfully touching. Kathleen Fuller is a new author to me and now I know that I would like to read more of her books.

Many thanks to Zondervan and to Edelweiss for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

I really love Kathleen's books! She writes her books with heartwarming, fun and delicious recipes that will make you drool. Sometimes, I feel like I'm living in her settings along with the characters that I read about and I tend to make friends with them because they are an interesting people to get to know and their way of life.
In each story each couple deals with whatever life has handed them. I loved getting to know these awesome people and I felt like I belonged in each of their families.
Of course, they are not without their flaws. Each couple has their own struggles and this is where their faith in God comes in. In some ways, I disagree with their lifestyle and beliefs but still, they are an amazing people.
I'm thankful to the author for translating the Amish words so that we can understand some of what they're saying.
Another reason I love Fuller's Amish stories is that they are faith filled throughout the book and not overly preachy. Forgiveness being the center of one story. Forgiveness is more for yourself. It will give you peace that you know you've tried with the other person. Yes, Forgiveness is hard. Even I've found that hard but I"m glad that I did it.
We all love to eat there's no doubt about it. Just like Jerald judges each cook in the community he does find something more precious than he ever dreamed about. You just never know who you may meet at any gathering! God certainly does things in HIs own timing that's for sure but there's always someone out there for everyone. We might just have to wait a little longer than some. Which is fine because they may be worth the the wait!
I did learn quite a few things as read this awesome book. Like Rheumatoid Arthritis. I"m glad that Fern doesn't let that stop her from doing the things she loves. Like said God does orchestrate things. They don't just happen. Some things are just meant to be. We all have doubts but when God gets ahold of us we can do anything!
Life isn't perfect that's for sure! We all have misunderstandings and false stories do get out of control at times. But again it calls for Forgiveness. It what Jesus would do.
I can't tell you again how much I loved this book. These characters I still think about from time to time.
I"m glad this story is about different people and generations. It shows that Love can go way back to the beginning of a family and keep continuing down through the years. I love that. It gives a sense of belonging and being loved. There's nothing greater than God's love.
I highly recommend this awesome book! You'll not want to put it down until it is finished.
My thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins/Zondervan for a complintary copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Unrequited love, second chance love, second love, and late love. It was great to read a variety of stories which also spanned a range of ages. I didn't feel like the "young love" story was too young since Fern is considered a spinster, but compared to the other stories they are! I loved the friendship and affection that quickly bloomed in the last story, especially with Elva's unhappy marriage. It was heartwarming to see her be appreciated for her skills as a cook and as a lovely person inside and out. Jerald is such a fun guy, and it was such a sweet match. I love when books make me feel so happy when things turn out perfectly for characters that deserve it.

Amish Generations by Kathleen Fuller contains four sweet Amish romances that span four different generations. Young Love features Fern Gingerich who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis despite only being in her twenties. She would love to marry and have a family, but Fern feels that a man would not want her because of her illness. When the pain is bad, Fern is confined to bed. When Dan begins paying her attention, Fern wonders if love can conquer all. Long-Awaited Love has thirty-four-year-old Jemima Kurtz returning home to Middlefield, Ohio after being gone a year helping her younger sister and her family. She encounters Everett while waiting for her ride. It has been ten years since she has last seen him. Jemima has a mix of feelings of inside her. Can the past be overcome so they can have a future? In Second-Chance Love, Lora Beth and Benjamin have both lost their spouses. They meet at a wedding and begin corresponding with each other. Their children want them to move in with them and treat them like they are in their dotage. Ben and Lora Beth are only in their 40s, for Pete’s sake. Can friendship end up being their second chance at love? Never Too Late has Regina’s friend, Elva visiting town and entering a baking contest with her blueberry pie. Jerald, a friend of Regina’s husband, is one of the judges. Jerald is a lifelong bachelor who loves good food. When he tastes Elva’s pie, it is love at first bite. Can two people find love in their twilight years? I enjoyed reading each of the four stories in Amish Generations. I thought the novellas were well-written with interesting characters and situations. Each main character has their good points and their foibles just like real people. I especially liked that the road to happily ever after was not smooth. It made the tales more realistic. Faith is important to each character. Christian values are included in each story without it becoming preachy. Forgiveness is one of the themes. You are forgiving someone else, but it is really for yourself. It is amazing how the act of forgiving someone will fill you with peace. I like that Young Love featured a woman in her twenties with a debilitating disease. We get to see how someone can look normal on the outside but riddled with pain on the inside. My favorite lines from Amish Generations is, “You can do anything you want to do if it’s God’s will.” Amish Generations contains four heartwarming stories that shows that it is never too late for love to find you.

I have yet to meet a Kathy Fuller story I didn't like, and these stories are no exception. As an Akronite, I always appreciate it when she mentions the city, but I had to laugh at the gem that appeared in this collection:

"Paul even left the district for a while. He needed to explore the world outside of Charm. He didn't go very far - just to Akron - and he came back a few days later. I guess he found out pretty quick that the world isn't as great as it seemed to be."

Akron is not for the faint of heart indeed, with plenty of reality checks among the cracks. You know what they say, though, that's where the light gets in.

Looking forward to the next Birch Creek novel (brides or otherwise).

Four different stories, four different generations, four different problems, but all end in romance. This collection has something for everyone, no matter what your age. Well written, with interesting characters and intriguing plots, these stories are entertaining as well as informative. As the characters work through their own problems, with God’s help, readers will come to know more about the Amish community and their faith.

Amish Generations by Kathleen Fuller is a compilation of four stories, each about finding love at a different time in your life. I read the book in one evening, because it was so good I didn't want to stop.
The first story is Young Love and it is about Fern and Dan. Fern has a chronic illness and she has always thought this would hinder her from living the life she wanted. Dan, however, wants the chance to prove her wrong. It was very sweet and I love how Fuller is able to bring people together, even when they don't know how.
The second story is Long Awaited Love. In it, Jemima and Everett have the chance to find love after ten years of being apart. But, can the two of them get over their feelings of hurt and mistrust and know that God has a plan for them? This story was also very nice. I loved seeing the work of God as He dealt with their hearts and their need for forgiveness. He is always able to mend the brokenhearted.
The third story is Second Chance Love. I think this one was my favorite. In it, Ben and Lora Beth meet at a wedding and begin sending letters to each other. Both are in their forties and have lost their spouses. As the letters progress, will they find more than pen pals? Being in my forties, I could relate to some of the things going on with them, and I enjoyed reading about the two of them and their families.
The fourth story is Never Too Late. Okay, maybe I was wrong before. I think this one may have been my favorite. I laughed through a lot of this one, even though there was also some serious moments that brought tears to my eyes. A confirmed bachelor and a widow who had a hard marriage find friendship, and maybe something more!
As always, I love Fuller's books! I hope you get to pick this one up and check it out! You will be glad you did!
I received a free copy of this story from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Four stories spanning four different generations, Amish Generations by Kathleen Fuller shows that "it's never too late to fall in love."

In Young Love, Fern is diagnosed in her early 20s with a chronic illness that she believes means she can't be a wife. While Dan was in a serious relationship, she could love him from afar but when he and his girlfriend go separate ways, and he turns his attention to Fern, can she continue to keep her health a secret?

Long-Awaited Love introduces Everett and Jemima who, 10 years earlier, were fiances. Everett felt trapped by his father's expectations and left the community in Ohio for another in Shipshewana. When he comes back, prepared to take over the family diner, can Jemima forgive him for leaving in the first place?

Second Chance Love shows that love can grow through words on the page as pen pals Lora Beth and Benjamin begin a correspondence over their shared love of baking and gardening. Will they both see that they can still enjoy life with a partner, even though their first partners have both died?

In Never Too Late, Elva's husband leaves her widowed so she takes the opportunity to visit a good friend, Regina. She's in her late 60s and after the troubled marriage she already had, she enjoys answering only to herself. When she meets Jerald, a lifelong friend of Regina's husband, her blueberry pie captures his interest first. The more he learns, the more willing he is to finally give up his 70 years of bachelorhood. Can he convince Elva that it's never too late to fall in love?

I always enjoy Kathleen Fuller's books. There is always some "pearl of wisdom" to be found, and each of these stories has its own pearl.

Readers who enjoy Amish fiction will love this book. It's four separate stories, so it's like reading four different books. Each story reads quickly, so it doesn't take very long read the whole thing. I definitely recommend!

Amish Generations is a compilation of four nice stories by Kathleen Fuller. Each of the stories focuses on two people of the Amish faith that come together . These are good clean stories that are easy to read. Each of the couples have obstacles they need to over come to move forward.

In Young Love, Fern has secretly had a crush on Dan for years and now that he is no longer committed to someone else, Fern needs to trust him enough to tell him about her hidden health condition.

In Long-Awaited Love, Jemima needs to assert herself with her family to allow them to have a life of her own. Everett needs to deal with the relationship with his father.

In Second-Chance Love, Lora Beth and Benjamin both have children that want them to move in with them, now that they are single again. They both need to make decisions based on their needs and not on what their children want.

In Never Too Late, Elva did not have the best first marriage. When her husband died, she planned to stay alone. But when she meets Jerald, she realizes not every man is like her first husband.

The thing that stands out the most to me is in Long-Awaited Love. I feel so much for Jemima who was always there to help her mother and was always discouraged by her parents to get a job and make her own life. They felt she had a pretty good life living with and helping them. Another is in Never Too Late, Elva has to learn to trust again and needs to be herself and experience happiness.

Another great book, this one is about the Amish generations. I rather enjoyed reading the different generations of the Amish. It shows that the Amish are no different to the English, we both worship the same God. The differences is how our relationships within the community. I like that a dictionary for some Amish words is at the front of the book and reflection questions at the end which is encouraging to complete and discuss with others.
Young Love—I understand on what Fern is going through and that her condition is embarrassing and would not want sympathy from others.
Long-Awaited Love— I emphasise with Jemima with how she is heavily relied upon by her parents and siblings and with Everett and the need for forgiveness.
Second-Chance Love—I enjoyed reading the story of letter writing between Benjamin and Lora Beth and how much closer it brought them together while attempting to elude the children’s wishes.
Never Too Late—As a committed old bachelor Jerald loves to eat and judge the cooks of the community he finally falls for Elva.

1) Young love - As Fern said "having a chronicle illness was difficult, but it wasn't the end of the world.
Just the end of mei teaching career.. before it even began"
Fern friend Dan ask to the Lord: "Lord, I don't understand this. I've known this woman all mei life, and I had never given
her much thought. So why am I falling for her now"
So true, the life could be strange sometimes, events happen when you don't imagine could happen.
2) Long-awaited love - Amish young and not married people are expected to help family.
Jemima stayed one year at ther sister house to help her recovered for an illness and take care her children.
But Everett go away home for 10 years because he disagrees about many things his father think, such as his father
impose him to work at the restaurant.
"Everett had always been a thoughtful man"
The parents, for my opinion, must learn that the children have a own mind, heart, wish, interests and during the life they must try,
mistake and live their own life. These are difficult for the parents.
3) Second chance love - In amish countries widows are encourage to live with children families and also have marriage again,
in God time. Sure all the family and village people will help widows. For me, this is a nice and kind thing.
4) Never too late -
Regina invetes her best friend from Michigan, Elva, to stay at her home for a week: they go to quilt meeting, meet friend Jerald,
chat a lot. What a good friendship, lovely story!

Amish Generations is an Amish anthology by author Kathleen Fuller.

(Young Love)

Fern Gingerich had a young crush on Dan Kline. Dan was not in a hurry to marry. Young Love is a fast-moving romance.

(Long-Awaited Love)

Jemima Kurtz spent most of her life taking care of her siblings. Everett Wengerd had come back into town. It had been a decade since Jemima last saw Everett. However, they had their own ideas of each other. One was thought to be stubborn, while the other was thought to be friendly.

Long-Awaited Love is a story of forgiveness and restoration.

(Second Chance Love)

Benjamin Troyer and Lora Beth both enjoyed cooking and exchanging recipes. They were both widows who appreciated each other. They grew to know each other through letter writing. I enjoyed getting to know Ben and Lora Beth and thought they worked well together.

(Never Too Late)

Marriage is never too late for Elva and Jerald who met at a pie-eating contest. I enjoyed getting to know Elva Gingerich and Jerald Byler while reading this story of friendship and love.

I appreciated the flow of all four stories and highly recommend Amish Generations to fans of Amish romance. I give Amish Generations 5*/5*.

Amish Generations by Kathleen Fuller has four stories in it.

Young Love: Fern and Dan’s story. I enjoyed it so much. Imagine crushing on a guy you like for eleven years?
Fern’s story gave me an inspiration. Sickness shouldn’t determine your life.

Long- Awaited Love. Stubborn Jemima and friendly Everett. Two different characters in this part of the story. All those food mentioned there made me to really toast my bread loaves in my toaster and drink water just because I was yearning for rolls and chocolate cake. I love how forgiveness was portrayed in this story.

Second – Chance Love. Ben and Lora Beth. Two middle aged people who lost their spouses through death. They find comfort in exchanging food recipes through letters. I enjoyed their letters. I felt like I was sneaking on their private lives but I had to remind myself, they are fictional. There is always a second chance for everybody.

Never Too Late.
Elva and Jerald story. It is never too late for love.

Kathleen Fuller writes good Amish stories with themes of love, forgiveness, family, God,second chances, appetizing foods and friendship etc.

Kathleen Fuller is a favorite author, in the Amish genre. She has once again given us a book, of 4 novellas, that does not disappoint. These 4 stories take us through a lifetime of love....from the early love of the young through the middle and older loves, to finally, the love of the sunshine years. What an evolution to become immersed in and visualize. You will enter into the world of young love and the challenge of autoimmune disease....an unusual topic but one that is addressed with compassion. You then journey into a love that, although was once thought over, again had a fire kindled underneath not so cold ashes. You then will see the hope of love, even after the loss of spouses....love will always find a way. And finally, the love of late life.....the sunshine years that hold few expectations and bask in the glory of the warmth and light of love once again to be had. Sit back, grab a cool drink and a warm cover, and enter into the world of Kathleen Fuller's evolutions of love's life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the insight into the the different life phases of love.

Kathleen Fuller writes Amish Fiction that is a lot of fun. Her characters are friendly and likable. Her settings are colorful and evoke wonderful word pictures. Each of the stories in this collection takes a couple looking for love and details how they overcame the obstacles standing in their way.

For one couple it was an auto immune disease, for another it was a ten-year separation beginning during their courtship, then there were the two widowed people finding a second chance, and finally a couple in their golden years find love for the first time.

I kind of wish these stories used some of the same families in her other stories, then reading these would have been like meeting up with old friends. If that's the worst I can say about the book, then this deserves at least four stars!

Zondervan and NetGalley.com provided the galley I read for this review. The opinions are my own.

Amish Generations has 4 different stories all in one book that are all exceptional! Each story shows us how faith, love, strength, & grace can get you through different problems in each of our lives through the couples in each of the stories. Each one of them have different plots, however, they all share the same four qualities listed above. Kathleen has done such a great job in each one of the stories with each set of characters she chose to write about and her story lines for them. I loved how she wrote about Autoimmune Disease in the first story. I, myself, suffer from one, but not the same as she wrote about in her story, however, just bringing awareness to her readers just warmed my heart and aspired me that people can learn about one of so very many that exist! Thanks Kathleen! Everyone that enjoys good love stories that are moving, exciting, and clean reads will definitely want to grab this book!! You won't be disappointed!!

Amish Generations is a book that is filled with four amazing novellas which were all written by Kathleen Fuller. Each novella tells its own fantastic story which centers around love. Young Love, long-Awaited Love, Second-Chance Love, and Never too Late Love. As you can tell by the titles each one deals with a different faze of life within the characters. The characters in each novella are strong, loving, and faithful to the Amish culture. These four novellas are sweet and inspiring demonstrating that you can find love at any age. The author has done a wonderful job telling the stories.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response. I have rated this book with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful book that I can highly recommend to others.

Congratulations to Kathleen Fuller for writing another outstanding book for her readers enjoyment.

Young Love
11 years is a really long time to have a rush on someone but I liked how Fern and Dan's love story turned out.

Long Awaited Love
Everett and Jemima with their history were still able to have a future filled with love and second chances for both of them. I loved how Everett stood up for Jemima telling her the truth even though she didn't want to hear it.

Second Chance.
I really liked how Lora and Beth's second chance love story started with correspondence through letters. Theirs was a delightful read.

Never too late.
Jarald and Elva never thought they could find love until they met each other. I admired the courage it took them despite their ages. Tear-jerking story of love found and second chances.

Really amazing collection of short stories.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

Young love

I really enjoyed reading this love story, Dan was so kind and caring towards Fern. I loved how this showed the struggles of chronic illness and how it can effect young people too. So many people don’t realise that it can and does.

Long-awaited love
Such a beautiful love story sometimes people need to grow, learn and change. Sometimes life and love doesn’t work out how we wanted it to or the story looks different than what we thought it would.

Second chance love
This was my favourite out of all of them. I loved the letters between Lora Beth and Ben and how what starts out as a friendship ends up being so much more. Sometimes heartbreak and trying times bring us closer to God.

Never too late
Sometimes the plans we thought God had for us aren’t what we thought they were or they change from what they once were. A beautiful story of love, community and friendship.

Amish Generations is a collection of four easy-to-read, sweet stories set in modern day Ohio. The plots are well-crafted and flow at a fitting pace. The stories featuring four couples in different seasons of life each with their own struggles showing that love has no age restrictions! A love that overcomes illness, a rekindled love, a second go-around love, and a golden years first love combine to make an entertaining, inspiring read which captures and keeps your interest from the beginning to the end. The faith element meaningfully permeates each story. The characters are engaging and believable. I thoroughly enjoyed this anthology and highly recommend it especially for lovers of Amish fiction.
I received a copy of this book in e-book form from the publisher via netgalley but am under no obligation to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.

There are four different stories here, and they are novellas so you can read one maybe two or the whole book in one sitting,
We are offered four different couples here, and yes there is a romance in each read, that will draw you in and keep you page-turning.
Each read has a different problem, and while we are in the Amish world here, this could be any where, but their faith does come into play. Will each couple be able to find their way to happiness despite the obstacles they are facing? You will be looking for answers, and if you are like me, a bit of disappointment once the last page is turned, wanting more!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Zondervan, and was not required to give a positive review.

The set of four novellas by author Kathleen Fuller is sure to please lovers of Amish fiction. From young couples to much older couples, the generations are covered in this book.

Charming stories that cover a multitude of challenges, Fuller shows us that love wins out over all if we care enough to lay self aside. Following God’s leading, the characters in this story overcome many things to be together and find the struggle is worth it.

The only thing that would have made these stories better would have been to include some recipes to go along with them. Especially for Elva’s pies! Seriously, grab a copy of this book, relax, and enjoy.

I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
