Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid

Rate this book
A business memoir from fifteen year-old lemonade entrepreneur and one of TIME Magazine's Top 30 Most Influential Teens, Mikaila Ulmer, and her advice for life and business.

When Mikaila Ulmer was four, she was stung by a bee--twice in one week. She was terrified of going outside, so her parents encouraged her to learn more about bees so she wouldn't be afraid. It worked. Mikaila didn't just learn what an important role bees play in our ecosystem, but she also learned bees are endangered, and set out to save them. She started by selling cups of lemonade in front of her house and donating the small proceeds to organizations dedicated to bee conservation. When she realized the more lemonade she sold, the more bees she could help, Me & the Bees Lemonade was born. Now she sells her lemonade across the country. From meetings with Fortune 500 CEOs, to securing a deal on Shark Tank , to even visiting the Obama White House, Mikaila's lemonade and passion for bee conservation have taken her far.

In Bee Fearless , part memoir, part business guide, Mikaila--now fifteen--shares her personal journey and special brand of mindful entrepreneurship and offers helpful tips and guidance for young readers interested in pursuing their own ventures, instilling in them the bee-lief that they can bee fearless and achieve their dreams too.

"My advice is to stay committed to your vision and mission and don't give up! If you continue to invest time and energy into a cause you're passionate about, you will get there." -Mikaila Ulmer

Who says you can't learn something from the mouths of babes? I was blown away by this book Mikaila put her heart, soul, and personality in to. While her book is Business 101 from a teenager's vantage point, as I read her book, I highlighted some very valuable pointers and reminders Mikaila generously included.

I remember seeing her and her father on the TV show Shark Tank when they made their presentation before the Sharks to seek seed money for their growing business. She talks about their application of the 4 P's of marketing. She spoke about their family's spiritual groundedness, especially when facing challenging situations, like having to rename her business because she was being sued or dealing with unexpected supply and demand issues.

In Makaila's words, "Once I started really thinking about my business and my mission, my lemonade company became a social good endeavor first, and the profit followed." I am so impressed by her dedication to her business since the days of those bee stings she got when she was four years old. I applaud her commitment to being true to herself as she became the successful founder and CEO of Me & the Bees Lemonade. I am more impressed how her family grew closer to make this, which is now a family business, come to fruition. I keep her book close by as I do with business books and periodicals written by successful adult business people.

This was a great book about entrepreneurship written for middle grade or higher from Mikaila Ulmer the creator of Me and the Bees Lemonade. The book is informative and would recommend to members of my Girl Scout troop. This book was selected for me by my daughter who knows I love bees.

At the time of this writing, only 13 of the word’s 500 largest companies are led by women. Of those, according to Forbes, none of them are women of color. The business world is white-male dominated, which isn’t news, but it’s that landscape that makes the story of Mikaila Ulmer stand out all the more: Bee Fearless is a middle-grade memoir about a young Black girl and her family starting a business and having it grow beyond their dreams.

Written with ghostwriter Brin Stevens, Bee Fearless captures Ulmer’s voice as a bright-eyed entrepreneur learning the ropes of business and eager to share what she’s learned. And it all starts and ends with bees: she was stung twice as a child, and instead of fearing bees her parents encouraged her to learn more about them. That experience, coupled with a local kids’ business fair and her grandmother’s recipe for lemonade with flaxseed, put Ulmer on a path that would lead her from a curious 4-year old child to a deal with Whole Foods and meeting Michelle and Barack Obama at the White House.

Now she finds herself as one of TIME magazine’s 50 most influential teens, but her decade-long journey to today is one of small successes that gradually accumulated into big ones. Since founding the small lemonade stand in Austin, Texas, it has grown into a company with its product sold in over 100 stores.

The tone of Bee Fearless is a kid-to-kid guide to following your passion and doing what she did, sharing with young readers the lessons and vocabulary she learned along the way: guidelines like learning to give first, save next, and spend last, and making a business plan with a mission, vision, and goal. The story is truly adorable and you can’t help but root for Ulmer’s success–who doesn’t love an underdog story of a bright young person–and young readers will be especially charmed by what Ulmer was able to accomplish. An accompanying jealously might accompany that charm though; not by begrudging her success, but through a pang of unfairness that young readers might feel but not yet be able to articulate...

I was reading 📖 this for my social studies literacy class for our entrepreneur project and we didn’t get to finish it before the end of the quarter.

But in the time of reading it, it was a very useful book 📕 if you were ever interested in entrepreneurship!!!

My notes while listening:

- Strong intro by author. Great hook and message.
- Your Entrepreneurs will love this.
- Incredibly informative and inspiring.
- I love books that showcase the amazing things kids can do when they put their mind to it.
- All this talk of lemonade is making me thirsty.
- Love how many business ideas are broken down in easy steps.
- This girl is wise beyond her years.
- Who are these parents? Kudos to them! Wow, I need to take patenting advice from them.

This book likely has a fairly narrow audience although it is completely delightful. This book will be a welcome read for any energetic and motivated student who is always thinking of a "grand plan".

In my opinion, 5th grade and up. Perhaps.... a very mature 4th grader.

Bee Fearless by Mikaila Ulmer is the true story of how Ulmer founded a lemonade company at the age of four and over the years grew it from a lemonade stand in her front yard to bottling and distributing the drink across the country. She appeared on Shark Tank and gained an investor. She has also spoken to many groups and at many conferences, inspiring other kids to become entrepreneurs and to take care of the bees.

For Ulmer, her interest in bees began after she was stung twice within a short period of time. Her parents wisely encouraged her to learn more about bees in order to allay her fear. Ulmer’s research revealed to her that the bee population is not as healthy as it once was--which is scary, as bees pollinate many of the foods we eat, in addition to supplying honey. Their pollination helps with larger scale biodiversity, too. Along with selling her lemonade, Ulmer’s company runs a foundation to support education and research about bees and which also donates bee hives.

Bee Fearless combines tips for building a business with the story of how Ulmer built her own business. It ends with ten years of her company, presumably when she is in high school, but a quick visit to her website shows that she has since gone on to Emory University.

It is quite incredible that a kid could do all of the things that Ulmer did--marketing, researching, building a budget, giving presentations, and educating others. The assistance of her parents made everything possible, and her parents both had some prior knowledge of business and finances. It is still incredible that Ulmer was able to create such an impactful and successful business.

Her journey involved meeting many famous people, including President Obama. There are pictures included throughout the book, as well as subtitles and flowers to show section breaks. As the book tells Ulmer’s stories, there are lessons and tips pulled out from the stories, which are aimed to help the prospective entrepreneurs in her audience. The tips are printed on the side margins of the pages and are labeled “Buzziness Ideas.” It is clear that effort was put into the designing of the book to make it easily digestible and to be read in multiple sittings. It is attractive and interesting to flip through.

Would I teach this book? Bee Fearless by Mikaila Ulmer and Brin Stevens (I appreciate that the ghost writer is given credit on the title page of the book) is one of the choices in a nonfiction unit I teach. More students opted for choices that included athletes’ stories than Bee Fearless and I wonder if it would have as much appeal to kids who are not looking to be entrepreneurs, but it does a good job of not just showing that creating a company is possible, it also describes many of the steps that Ulmer and her parents went through as they made her lemonade stand into a business. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of the book for kids is that it shows both that the business took time and effort and that it was possible.

Bee Fearless is a bit dry at times, and does not include the same level of drama and excitement as the rest of the choices in my nonfiction unit, but for youth who are looking to learn more about being an entrepreneur, it is a good choice.

The autobiography of Mikaila Ulmer who after being stung twice in one summer by bees when she was 4 learned more about them at the prompting of her parents, discovered bees are important and in danger, and came up with the idea to start a lemonade stand that incorporated honey to raise money to save bees while also earning herself money for a doll. From her little lemonade stand at 4 1/2, Mikaila grew her lemonade business to the point of bottling and selling it in Whole Foods grocery stores, appearing on Shark Tank, and using proceeds to start a nonprofit to benefit bees and bee education. As Mikaila shares her story, she includes key business principles every entrepreneur needs to know and gives other young people advice on how to start their own businesses.

This is a bit of a wild story. But as Mikaila's story unfolds, you do find out that her Mom worked in marketing and her Dad worked in finance so she was uniquely surrounded by people who could give her sound advice on how to make a business succeed. But it also does sound like the desire to grow and expand her business from tiny stand to serious beverage business was driven by her desires and her parents encouraged her do much of the work herself while also being supportive. She certainly comes across as very knowledgable in the steps required to set up a successful business and get it growing. The writing is very readable (thanks to her ghost writer are included in the back, so she also had help with that, though given her public speaking experience I have no doubt she was heavily involved in what words got on the pages). This is an inspirational and instructional read for anyone interested in starting their own business. I also love that Mikaila is committed to giving first, saving second, and spending third. She doesn't rant and rave about how much starting a business got her. She talks realistically about the hard work involved, and passionately about continuing to work to save bees through the profits. She talks about the joy and continuing passion that can be achieved by making your profits about others first. It's very solid, mature, and compassionate advice on how to handle the money you earn and wisdom you gain. She's the kind of business leader we need to see more of in the world. Highly recommended.

No content issues.

Bee Fearless: Dream Like a KidBee Fearless: Dream Like a KidI first saw Mikaila when she appeared on Shark Tank. Right after the show, we went to Whole Foods and bought some of her lemonade. It was good but I was more impressed by her presence on the show and her gumption. We don't go to Whole Foods often (maybe twice a year) but we do buy her lemonade when we go.

I accidentally learned that she'd just published a book so I ordered it. It sat on my To-Be-Read pile for a while. Then Juneteenth happened. Every Juneteenth I try to read one nonfiction book about the African-American experience. Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid was near enough to the top of the pile to rate a reading. So I did.

I finished the book in one day although I did devote the entire day to reading. I found many words of wisdom, even for someone who isn't a kid and not interested in being an entrepreneur just yet.

I think I'm going to use Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kidit as a mentor text this upcoming year because I want my students to know that you don't have to be an adult to change the world. I can definitely see pairing Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid with Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You!.

In Bee Fearless: Dream Like A Kid, Mikaila is a very determined, brave, risk taking, sweet girl. She started her business at 4 after she got stung twice by bees and was dedicated to learning more about the bees. Mikaila donates some money to organizations fighting to save the bees and I think that is a very nice thing to do. She was brave to be on Shark Tank and change bottling facilities, get investors, and still stick with her mission.

Me & the Bees Lemonade has gone from a small lemonade stand in her front yard to having her lemonade in 1,500 stores across America. Mikaila was also on Shark Tank and got a deal with Daymond John. In her free time, Mikaila likes attending social entrepreneurship events to encourage young entrepreneurs and she also likes going to workshops to help save the bees.

In Bee Fearless: Dream Like A Kid, my favorite part was when Mikaila got to go to the White House and tell people about her business because her role model is Michelle Obama and she would get to meet her. Mikaila also had a challenge to find a dress that would fit her but thankfully the last one she tried on fit. Also, she would get to meet other young entrepreneurs that are making healthy items. She got to tell lots of people about her business and the impact she is making.

I rated this book a 5 because it is very inspirational. Reading this book inspired me so much I wrote a letter to her. I would recommend this book to all young entrepreneurs because throughout the book it gives you encouraging quotes and business tips for your own business for success. People who don't have a business can still read it because they can learn about her and the impact she is making in the world to help save bees. Did you know that bees are at the top of the food chain?

Bee Fearless is the memoir of young entrepreneur Mikaila Ulmer. She's the powerhouse Texan running a beverage business, leading a nonprofit with the goal of saving bees, speaking at the White House and squeezing in time for volleyball practice.

Social entrepreneurship is a new concept for me. I was really impressed with Mikaila and all she's accomplished in her fifteen years. Her memoir serves as a guide for other like mind young people who dream of turning a profit, running their own business or being socially and environmentally cognizant and wanting to impact the world. She's indeed a role model for those who wish to follow in her footsteps or those who want to blaze their own path.

Mikaila's story is compelling and engaging and you find yourself wanting to know more about her and her supportive family. The only drawback to the book was it tended to be a bit redundant. The format was a little scattered, but it could just be the digital copy I received.

Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid, is a great family story and business outline for the little hearts in your life. The book is clearly written, full of fun moments, and family memories. I think this would be a great book to share with children and young adults who wish to become entrepreneurs.

The book tells of how and Why Mikaila started her company, her business growth, challenging obstacles, hard personal choices, business difficulties and how she built strategic partnerships including a stop on Shark Tank. Then explains why she went on to develop a nonprofit. I think This book is suitable for adults too. It's written with a lot of guidance, business vocabulary, and some clear direction for success. Bravo Mikaila

I enjoy and marvel at the story of Mikaila’s creativity, spunk, drive, and use of talents and gifts as she has made her way into the world of entrepreneurship. Her focus and mission are something to aspire to at any age.

I am excited to share this inspiring and uplifting story with my Fourth Graders especially as we begin a unit with Finance and Business. This unit wraps up with students having their own Market Day at school.

This is a great read for story and practical application. Mikaila has shared her pathway to success and gives solid advice and steps that were key in her growth as a young entrepreneur. Others have a role model like none other!

I read this book with my class at a homeschool co-op for our business course and honestly thought it was boring but the business activities and Kahoot reviews we did with it were fun. Just a note if you’re thinking about using this for a class:
My class was 7-12’th grade but I feel like this course was geared more towards the middle schoolers in the group. It was ok for a school book but don’t recommend reading just for fun, it’s not much of a story more business tips, which is great, but I’m a story type of person.

Bee Fearless: Dream Like a Kid is inspirational and makes business concepts/terms super simple to understand. I learned a lot about the beverage bottling process. Can you say copacker?

From reading this, it's obvious Mikaila's parent set her up for success early on from healthy eating habits and business-savvy. This book may very well spark the entrepreneurial spirit in you, or, at least, tell you the backstory behind a sweet lemonade.

Inspiring book for middle school readers. I attended a special Girl Scout Meet the Author Texas Book Festival event with Mikaila Ulmer, and she really wowed the audience. In addition to her own story, tips on creating a solid business plan are sprinkled throughout the book. This book would be great incorporated into a lesson plan on entrepreneurship and using business proceeds to support a cause you believe in.

What an amazing girl! I cannot believe how successful she is! Not to mention this book was VERY well written. I have read quite a few books in my day and this one did not come across as being written by a teenager. It was geared toward a younger audience and defined many terms that they might not be familiar with. It provided information and motivation for people to go after their dreams and be their best selves.

I don’t care what age you are, this book is inspiring. Mikayla takes you through her journey, beginning at just under 5 years old, through the development of her multi-million dollar lemonade business. And, she did it with a focus of helping the environment & saving the bees. I’ve enjoyed her products many times before, but enjoying my lemonade will be a little sweeter now that I’ve read this book.

I loved this book. I'm not a teenager, but I am starting my own business. It's not necessarily that every single concept Mikaila talked about was new to me, but it was that she framed it in a unique, easy-to-understand way. I'll definitely be recommended this one to bee lovers, middle-grade readers and small business founders alike.
