IN THE TENSION OF PULLING AWAY THERE IS SOLACE. Chris Wheeler's first collection of poetry digs deep into the peculiar grace of dark seasons with rich imagery and unflinching honesty. Illuminated by original art from artist Josie Koznarek, Wheeler’s verse suggests that brokenness bears healing and despair unearths hope. He leans into such tensions as pain, failure, and loneliness until they crack open, revealing what was always inside. And the marrow of it all is grace.

T.S. Eliot said, "Genuine poetry can communicate before it is understood." That's true of this collection. Percy Shelley said, "Poetry lifts the veil from the hidden beauty of the world, and makes familiar objects be as if they were not familiar." That's also true of this collection. Rich imagery indeed (see the book description). At times, also unexpected. I enjoyed engaging all my senses for Wheeler's word paintings and contemplating their connections to deep longings and realities.
Chris Wheeler writes thoughtful poetry that captures the world and human experience with potent word pictures and penetrating honesty. Reading his poetry is an exercise in emotional, theological, and imaginative depth. Some poems brought me to tears, others to shock and awe. Occasionally there was even laughter or confusion. Each of them brought me deeper into my self, the world, and the divine.
