A Hardened Warrior by Hildie McQueen
Clan Ross #2. Scottish Historical romance. Best read in series order as the couple from the first book is included in a timeline that is after the first.
Tristan Ross is injured and separated from his clan. He’s certain he’s going to die when an Angel helps and nurses his injuries and delivers him back home. He finds out later that his savior is Merida McLeod and for clan politics, he is to marry her. Merida would rather marry for love, but she knows it’s her duty to marry in the best interests of the clan.

Marriage for political gain. An old concept that has me cringing. Almost as much at the public deflowering that is also in this book. Ugh. And the servicing maid? At least it was her choice.
Tristan is definitely changed by his near dying experience. Ethan is nasty and someone really needs to take care of him. Merida has her moments but seems to bounce around a bit.
I did enjoy revisiting with the couple from the first book and knowing that they are happy in their new love. And Tristan is sensitive to Merida’s needs so I’m calling it a win for romance.

In truth, I only wanted to read this book because I liked Malcom and Elspeth’s relationship and wanted to see more of it. Turns out very little was said about them.

As always, I liked Alec. It was nice to read about he and Paige’s marriage.

Ethan was vexing as always and every time he opened his mouth (especially towards the end) I wished, his father would just turn him over to The Ross. To find out the reason he even killed the Ross laird was because of a tournament was so infuriating.

I didn’t really care for Tristan & Merida’s relationship. I think there was too much conflict between them so their intimacy just wasn’t enjoyable. But I enjoyed how their conflicts enhanced the plot.

The author kept saying Kieran was the “handsomest” of the brothers but from the book cover, Tristan is the handsomest. Followed by Malcom. Kieran is the least handsome.

I also feel the books could’ve been wrapped up better -yes, I know it’s continual but the ends are way too abrupt.

Entertaining read though and will recommend!

The Clan wars became brutal and Tristan Ross almost lost his life. He knew he was going to die but he would hear a voice talking and giving him substance. Merida, he heard her name and caught glimpses but the beautiful woman seemed like a vision, not real.
Tristan ended up back with his clan as he slowly healed, but had not known he had been taken care of by a McLeod (Merida). Clan Ross and Clan McLeod had been at war and Clan McKenzie became the intermediary. Ethan McLeod had killed Tristan's father and they sought vengence against Ethan.
Meeting up at the McKenzie keep, that is when he saw her, his beautiful vision in the flesh. What he came to find out was that she was a McLeod and her brother was Ethan.
The solution for a truce became Tristan was to marry Merida. But would it help?
I fell in love with Tristan and just wanted him to find comfort, since he felt so empty due to his father's death and all the people caught up in the war. Merida had her opinions and could be fiesty and I could not wait to see what would happen as the two got together.
An enthralling story of learning to trust and healing of the spirit and body on this journey that would hopefully lead to a true love. Wonderful...

I was so excited for this sequel, because I loved the first book, but unfortunately it wasn't that good. I liked the side characters but the hero and heroine seemed to be lacking character development. The hero had a very pleasant personality and of the 3 brothers was the most lighthearted in the first book and although in this book it is kind of explained that his injury left him bitter, he just seemed like a different character than what was in the first book. I also wasn't a big fan of the heroine, at times she was nice and other times she was annoying. I really liked the reappearance of Paige and Alec and the development of their love story, but I was disappointed that Ian from the warrior who lost his arm was barely mentioned. I really liked his love story and wanted it to continue in this book. It is still a good story and I look forward to the next third book. I'm also hoping there are plans for a book with Ruari's story.

Clan wars are always interesting. But with this particular one I'm kind of annoyed that the family at fault just will not put an end to the war by punishing the one person responsible. I also don't get how this random third clan is somehow able to make both clans do something. But Tristan is probably the brother I was most excited for since he seemed the most mellow, and Merida seemed cool. But a lot of the conflict between couples in this series just seems to boil down to whether the bride is loyal to her birth clan or new clan. But I guess that's part of the arranged marriage/political marriage trope.

Wonderful Enemy To Love Romance:
This is the second book in the series and I look forward to reading the entire series.
This story got my attention from the first page and didn't slow down throughout the entire book
Political and dramatic story along with an intriguing romance story.
Terrific and interesting characters. I loved both Tristan and Merida.
Exciting and tense plot. The story does not completely end but carries into the next book.
I love a story about healers and this has a touch of that and was really an enjoyable reading experience.

A Hardened Warrior by Hildie McQueen is a Highlander romance. Tristan Ross is dead, he thinks, or will be soon. A woman's voice is urging him to drink. A man is there also. Someone had betrayed the contingent of Rosses who were journeying to the MacLeod keep to offer peace. Now here he was, dying, with Merida, a lass who was not a Ross. Ethan MacLeod had killed his father, for no good reason, and they had been at war ever since. It was never going to end. His brother Malcolm, who was now laird, was still angry, and his brother, Kieran, was beyond angry, he was crazed. Tristan did survive and make it back to his brother's keep. Their overlord, the Mackenzie had called his brother to his keep, for what reason they did not now. Things were so busy that Malcolm sent Tristan. It turns out the Mackenzie was sick of the warring between the Ross and MacLeod clans and wanted it to stop. He had the perfect idea. Marry Tristan Ross to Merida MacLeod. No one was very happy about it, but marry her he did. Things did not get better. The tension between the two clans was still high. There had to be a solution so everyone could go back to living their lives, including Tristan and Merida.

Loved, loved, loved this book. It took us into both the Ross and MacLeod keeps and we got to see both sides of the story. We met Alec, the laird to be of the Macleod clan and his commoner wife, Paige. What a lovely story. We got to see more of Malcolm and his wife, Elspeth. Merida and Tristan are a wonderful love story, almost destroyed by hate and jealousy. The Macleod laird knew the trouble had all been caused by his son, Ethan, who became more unbalanced by the day, but he could not give up his son to appease the Rosses, who had sworn they would kill him. There seemed no way out. Plus, there appeared to be a traitor in their midst. This is a great adventure as well as several romances. It is a terrific story, well-plotted, with intriguing characters. I highly recommend it.

I was given a free ARC of A Hardened Warrior by Dragonblade in exchange for a fair review. All opinions and interpretations contained herein are solely my own.

Stars 3.5/4 (Margaret Mallory, Julie Johnstone, Monica McCarty, Lynsay Sands, Donna Fletcher)

my personal markers for a great read...1. smart and engaging writing, 2. Humorous, 3. sexy interactions 4. stories with family/friends

The development and interest in main characters and secondary characters was enjoyable. I really did like the H/H for this book.

I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get series book characters, nicely written and enjoyable.

I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.

Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. The Scottish dialogue wasn’t difficult to follow and there’s also modern vocabulary. Action packed.

Laugh out loud humorous moments.

Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top, some ‘dirty’ words intertwined rightly in the story telling. Short story 2.5/5 hotness and steam.

Totally recommend author.

Will read the next book by the author.

You don’t have to read the book in order however I think you miss the true story of it’s not read in its order.

side note…i find there are missing/conclusion storylines in each book which can a little ‘sooooo what happen’.

Really good story....

This is the second in a series of books about the McKenzie, Ross, and McLeod clans. in this story Tristan is the brother of the Ross laird and he has been injured in battle.. He is semi conscious and is being treated by a lovely woman with whom he’s unfamiliar. Merida found the injured man near her home and as a healer, she and another healer have worked to help him, but fear it’s a futile endeavor. They discover he may be a member of an enemy’s clan, and work to return him home in hopes that if he dies it occurs at his home rather than theirs, where such a discovery would only bring more war.
A few months later, and conflicts later, the two run across each other at a clan gathering at which both are required to attend. Tristan is there because his clan is being asked to work on a truce. Meridan was taken to the gathering by her parents as part of her search for a husband. Both are surprised to see each other. But the surprises never cease....
This is a fun story with interesting characters, romance and intrigue. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next in the series.

Well, I liked it more than the first. Merida was a pretty solid heroine. I liked her enough. She had an independent stubbornness about her but not to the point of making her dumb or acting rashly, thank God. Tristan was an interesting hero that I don't feel like we got to know him well enough. To be honest that could be said for both MCs.

The story continued where the last left off and although still carried the multiple POVs it didn't feel as overwhelming as the last one with quite a bit less of them outside of the MCs.

Didn't care for more Paige/Alec either. They simply bore me... at least Paige did.

I'm still not a fan of this authors need to finish each book in the next hero's POV with no real conclusion for the current couple of this book (alas no epilogue) and then go "the end" hah! Hardly so when it's left wide open for the next book, but whatever. It's was an alright read. Cured my boredom even if it's not the most interesting of historicals I've read it's definitely not the worst.

Tristan Ross was seriously injured and left for dead when an angel helps save him. Merida McLeod helped save a Warrior from their enemies clan and helped him return home. Months after Tristan had recovered his clan is called to a meeting with the other clans by The MacKenzie to try to resolve the war between the Ross and McLeod clans. When Tristan sees Merida he realizes that she is the angel that helped save him. When the MacKenzie Laird commands that Tristan and Merida marry in order to stop the wars both Tristan and Merida shocked and worried. Tristen is worries about how he will protect Merida and she is afraid of what his clan will do to her when they find out she is a McLeod. I have to say I really enjoyed reading this story. There is so much to this story and I can’t wait to read the next one. Both Tristan and Merida have had a rough road together and still have lots of challenges to face. Loved it and definitely recommend reading this book.

Clan wars are brutal and Tristan Ross almost lost his life, he was left for dead, but a beautiful woman’s vision and voice kept him fighting for his life. Merida McLeod helped save a warrior from their enemy’s clan and helped him return home to his Clan He’s been slowly healing not knowing he’d been taken care of by his enemy Merida McLeod.
Clan Ross and Clan McLeod meet to bring peace to the clans and Tristian see for the first time in the flesh his dream vision is real. With a twist of fate and a solution for a truce is for Tristan to marry Merida. They both have inner struggles to overcome can Tristian be the man he needs to be to protect his family and Merida’s worries what will happen when her secret become known. A great read I loved these two their souls need healing and they are perfect together. An excellent story I loved and I voluntarily wrote a review.

Enemies to lovers

Tristan Ross and Merida McLeod come from feuding clans. The war between their people costs lives, livelihoods, and homes. It leaves their people hungry.

The head of the largest neighboring clan has had enough. He orders Tristan Ross to marry Merida McLeod in the hope of finally bringing about a lasting peace.

Though resistant at first the two are made for each other. Now if only the weight of keeping peace between the clans and balancing duties would allow them time to truly get to know one another.

I really enjoyed this book, once again staying up all night to read it. The only complaint I have is there is always a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of each book despite the resolution of the romance. It's extremely frustrating. Still a great read definitely deserving of 5 stars.

Recovering from injuries that nearly killed him, the heroic, handsome, tall and muscular warrior dreams of the beautiful young woman who helped heal him, not only with her gentle care, but with her beautifully soft healing voice.
Tristan Ross is seeking vengeance for his clan, but visions of Merida McLeod captivate him, he cannot get her out of his mind, and when he finally sees her again, he discovers that she is the sister of the man who killed his father.
Thrown together and bound in marriage can they weave their way through the hate and violence both will encounter in this deeply emotional, passionate and surprising love story, only time will tell.
Hildie McQueen has a wonderful way of weaving plots, death, love and humour through this book, and it is a book that you will not want to put down until the very end.

This series is getting better and better . I’m on edge waiting for the next one with Kieran.

This however was Tristan and Medira’s HEA .
Oh and it was determined to keep me on edge and begging to turn the next page.

The story was addictive, exciting and emotional.
The characters are starting to feel like I know them personally and the whole storyline is just wonderfully satisfying.

Please can I have the next one now .

An enemy and a wife

Tristan has traveled in his brothers stead to a meeting with other clans! Merida is the sister of Ethan who killed their father for no reason in an ambush! Merida parents want her to wed but not to Clan Ross their enemies! A bigger problem now is how will the clan react to a known enemy in the camp!? Tristan is stoic and shows little or no reaction to things happening around him since his father's murder! Merida is outspoken, beautiful but too fearful of what will happen outside of her father clan! Merida loves her mom and is close to her? When Tristan has a choice to let Merida return to her clan or remain with him will she? Merida can finally go home what will she choose?

Tristian and Merida. She came across him in the first book after some of her clansmen attacked their envoy and he was injured (almost dead). She and the monk helped him live and the monk returned him home. After being summoned by a powerful laird both the Ross clan and the McLeod attend. The intention was to broker a permanent truce. To accomplish it the laird decreed a uniting of the two clans when Tristian Ross married Merida McLeod. On the return to the Ross keep, their group was attacked by some McLeod warriors that were unaware of the truce. Ethan McLeod has gone full on crazy and cannot be controlled. Despite the truce both clans know the Ross’ won’t sway from killing Ethan in retaliation of him murdering their father/laird. Being an outsider in a sea of Ross is proving a difficult adjustment for the McLeod daughter but their love for each other is keeping them together.

Why? Why did the author build up our anticipation and then leave us with a cliffhanger? I can't say I dislike cliffhangers, it just depends on how they are done. This one wasn't bad, but I wanted some kind of conclusion to Tristan and Merida's story. The way it was written, I expected a lot more to take place within the story before it ended. However, I can say that I did enjoy the story. I love the honesty between Tristan and Merida. It made me happy as a reader to see a couple talk out their issues. I give A Hardened Warrior 3.5 stars.

Love

This story is about the Clan Ross, the Clan McLeod, and the Clan Mackenzie.
The two main people are Tristan Ross and Merida McLeod. The two clans have been at war with each other. The Mackenzie thought that by joining the two clans in a marriage between Merida McLeod and Tristan Ross would help the fragile truce.
Clan Ross are looking for Ethan McLeod as retaliation for the death of their father. The youngest son Kieran was there when their father was killed.
Now it is a time of waiting to see what happens.

Another Great Highland Romance

The story of the Rosses and Mcleods continues this time with Tristan and Merida's story. I love the feisty women in these stories and the hard men that learn to soften some. The story continues after this book. Ian and Keiran's stories are to come. Hildie McQueen does interconnected stories really well. Each book is a complete love story but there are plot lines that run through each book. The sex scenes are always great. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Awesome

This book was awesome! I was shocked that I arrived at the ending so quick. I wasn't ready for the end. I need Keiran's story now. The characters, that were in book one are just as wonderful in this book.
Tristan was his fierce, yet passionate self. Merida remained bold and loving . The book is an easy read with the pages flowing smoothly. This is a book series that I would read again.
This book can be read alone, but definitely better as a series.

I love steamy romances with a great warrior hero & heroin who is relatable. I honestly picked this book because I read the first one and wanted to see where this would go.
I love Tristan & Merida’s story; however the author cuts the end so quickly you feel like you have missed something. The same was true in book one of the series & I see it may be the authors style. While im not a fan of that piece, the story was good.

Great short read by Hildie McQueen. This is book 2, a continuation of book 1 of the series. This is Tristan’s story which is filled with action, betrayal, and a stubborn little redhead right smack in the middle of a huge, family feud. As I said, this is a quick read and almost felt like it wasn’t finished, to me, but then it’s the perfect cliffhanger to run into book 3. there is a strong sexual attraction between Merida & Tristan that just sizzles along until it’s a full fledged barn burned. 😍

Interesting plot however, similar to the other book I read by the author, execution was not to my expectation. There's no chemistry between the Ms, no angst, no connection. Yes, there was physical attraction but that was it. Even that seemed weak.
I do not see how I could proceed if I do not favor where it was going. Since there's no chemistry, everything seemed flat. This was an unfinished read for me.
