My Broken Mariko was an odd experience for me. I thought it was an odd choice of story, but it worked. It's neither a well-written nor a pathetic manga, but it's right in the middle.

On the first page of the manga, I noticed a warning that the manga is traumatic and contains heavy suicidal content. I was expecting a significant shift in my mindset after reading it, but nothing happened.

Despite the fact that it was about suicide and such, there were many comic-like elements ( jokes and cartoonish drawings). On the other hand, I was expecting something very serious and heavy. It was still a very impressive way of telling and writing a story. If you decide to read it, I don't think you'll be disappointed. However, it is not a must-read..

Painful and beautiful single-volume manga about losing a friend to suicide. It's hard for me to describe it except to say how many different emotional threads it weaves together: grief, anger, resentment, guilt, a desperation to make right anything you still can, and even darkly comic moments as our protagonist Shiino careens through her quest to steal her lost friend Mariko's ashes from Mariko's abusive father.

Obviously the subject matter is heavy, but if it might be for you, I highly recommend it. CW: sexual assault in backstory.

(There's a second unrelated story in the book, too, maybe to round it out to sufficient pages for printing? I wish it hadn't been included because it's such a jarring switch from the title story.)

After a life of abuse at the hands of her father and others, Mariko Ikawgawa has committed suicide. Her best friend, Tomoyo Shiino, is wild with grief and sets off on a reckless adventure to spread her ashes. The grief-powered road trip is a pretty standard trope and the author leans heavily into its cliches. Aside from the young female protagonist, it doesn't seem like there is anything here that I haven't seen before and done better, placing this book firmly in the "just okay" column.

Also included in the book is an unrelated and weird short story about criminals set in the 1990s in the American Southwest, followed by a coda to the main story. It's a jarring juxtaposition.

Four and a half for the titular story, three and a half for the other one.

My Broken Mariko

When I bother to read fiction, I usually look for well constructed mirrors. In the titular story from this manga, because it features two, the protagonist is a high-strung failed adult with a dead-end job that pays her rent but otherwise just grates on her nerves. In the very first page of that story we learn that her best friend, only friend, the titular Mariko, has committed suicide. Along the way we learn that Mariko was as broken as they come, and little of her true nature had a chance to come through given that she suffered a childhood, up to her twenties, full of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her father. The only person this Mariko approached for help was the protagonist, who in school was already a delinquent from a broken home.

Ever since they met, the protagonist had always been heartbroken because she couldn't find a way to save Mariko both from her father and then from herself. Now that she won't be able to help her anymore in life, she decides to grab a knife and visit Mariko's father to steal her best friend's ashes.

I won't go into further details about the plot of a one-shot, but I loved the realistic way the author treated someone as damaged as Mariko's character, as well as her relation with the protagonist. Mariko knew she was broken, and even after she became an adult she searched for man after man who would mistreat her and hurt her, because she couldn't relate on a deeper level with people in any other way. But this titular girl wasn't innocent either: she monopolized the protagonist's life and attentions by guilting her into not interacting with other people and particularly not getting a boyfriend, because that would mean that Mariko would lose her chance to be saved, even though she knew she was doomed from the beginning. That dynamic continued until a week or so before the titular character killed herself, so most of the reasons for the protagonist's isolation and her unhappiness are related to having been tied down, and dragged to the depths of despair, by someone who had no means and no intentions of getting better.

The protagonist deals not only with the grief of losing her best friend whom the protagonist had tried to save since her school days, but also with the anger and remorse that the person she had dedicated her life to chose to abandon her. So we have a fucked up, failed adult for a protagonist, who also has a huge savior complex, and an impact character (the most influential character for the protagonist in a narrative) who is doomed from the beginning. I'm not surprised about the comparisons with Inio Asano's "Oyasumi Punpun", which remains my favorite manga series.

As if the story of this one-shot manga didn't attract me enough, I found his artistic style tremendously compelling. It was over the top but in a way that emphasized the characters' emotions perfectly. The depiction of both the shit they go through (both in the plot and in the drawings) as well as how they react to it is more raw, and real, than in most manga, which I'm all for.

I didn't rate it a five because it left me wanting to know more about and spend way more time with the protagonist. I thought there was far more to develop about her.

The second story takes place in the United States near the border with Mexico, and it reminded me a lot of "No Country For Old Men". I won't say anything else about that story except that it was a bit more on the nose than I would have liked, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

I want to read more stuff by this author, but apparently he or she has released nothing else. If this is really this person's first manga, I look forward to that successful career.

My Broken Mariko explores Tomoyo Shiino's life after the death of her best friend Mariko Ikawgawa. In this manga the main character looks back on their friendship and everything that happened between the two. The author slowly shows the horrible things that happened during Mariko's youth and we get to see how protective Tomoyo Shiino has always been towards her beloved friend.
Even though I believe there were things that could have been done a bit better, I really appreciated how grief was portrayed in this volume.

You can find my review on my blog by clicking here.

Losing a loved one is nothing anyone can prepare for. The mere thought of it alone can twist your insides, tear your heart out, and beat you out of reality. Even more frustrating is the thought that someone you know would willingly take their own life, that they would exit this world without a word to anyone who cared for them, even when they’ve shown you genuine happiness by your side. In mangaka Waka Hirako’s debut, she explores themes of abuse, suicide, depression, and happiness, through the story of a young lady’s grieving journey and her special bond with her departed friend.

What is My Broken Mariko about? This English-translated single-volume manga follows the adventure of Tomoyo Shiino, an ill-tempered office assistant who suddenly learns that her best friend committed suicide. Overcome with emotion and defeat, she wanders aimlessly, clueless as to what had happened to her friend Mariko and what she should do now. Refusing to end things on this hopeless note, she runs off with the firm intention of stealing her friend’s ashes from her abusive father and to go on one last adventure that might offer the only closure she could ever get.

Despite a heartbreaking premise to work with, it is difficult to speak of the execution without noting its flaws. In this short, concise, and energic tale, readers follow Shiino in her self-destructive journey to mourn the loss of a beloved friend with whom she had an intimate and ethereal relationship. Her actions speak louder than words as she continuously puts herself in questionably dangerous situations that make you wonder about the stability of her own mental health. What made this an ambiguous reading experience, however, is in the odd comedic overtone that constantly came to counterbalance the intense emotions. This essentially kills the reader’s chance to connect with these characters and to embrace the powerful emotions felt by Tomoyo Shiino.

While mangaka Waka Hirako does do an impressive job in sparingly exploring the bond between these two characters, slowly unveiling the complex history that they shared, without ever really giving away a concrete explanation to the tragedy at the heart of this journey, it is always the over-the-top reckless moments that rubs off as an attempt at unnecessary comic relief that prevents this story to really stand on two feet. This issue is perfectly observable in the artwork as well, at times capturing agonizing and touching moments with stunning and expressive artwork, while at other times resorting to simplified character designs and facial expressions to note humourous moments. The inclusion of a bonus story titled Yiska that had nothing to do with My Broken Mariko, telling the story of two lone individuals caught between a rock and a hard place, also didn’t help to end this volume on a better note.

My Broken Mariko is a resonant tale of love and loss that struggles to embrace its more profound emotions by shuffling in irrelevant comicality.

4.8 ⭐

My Broken Mariko is a story about a girl who commit suicide and about those who was left behind. This story is full mixture of depressed, grief, anger, frustrated, weird, resentment and guilt. The theme is about longing to someone who already gone. What would you do if your bestfriend commit suicide?

This manga made me reflecting to my own questions this whole time, 'what would happen to those people I love when I end my life? Would they be sad? Would they feel happy? Would they remember me for the rest of their life?' Friendship is a powerful thing. I love how this manga highlight the friendship between Mariko and Shiino. Mariko only have Shiino in her life, and she cherish her so much. Shiino were fully devastated on how Mariko commit suicide and that she never open up about her mental health struggle. It telling us in a mature way of what it is like for people to mourning the loss of their friend. How even in death, that bond of friendship won’t go away.

"𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙢𝙚? 𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙𝙣'𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙢𝙚? 𝘼𝙩 𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙢𝙚 "- Shiino words to Mariko 🥺

What makes me crying even more is that this manga is inspired by the author's mother who is also a victim of abuse. She listened to her mother experiences of physical & emotional abuse by her parents. Even though in the manga, the author didn't explicitly shows the rape and abuse scenes, she able to portray the effect of it brilliantly. Reading this make you able to empathize with the characters, and how Shiino mourning to Mariko death is far more than a simple 'painful' word. It could not be described.

This manga is not for anyone to read, but if you want to read something depressing this one is for you 💜 p/s: this manga will have live action movie adaptation soon, and one of my favorite actress will be in it!! 🥰

Nel titolo c’è già tutto.
“My”, mia, possessione, appartenenza, affetto.
“Broken”, rotta, spezzata, distrutta, violata.

Manga TW / CW: Discussions of Suicide, Death by Suicide, Depictions of Intentional Self-Harm via Cutting, Child and Childhood Abuse, Statements/Discussion of Childhood Sexual Assualt from a Parent, Parent/Child Incest, Emotional Abuse

My Broken Mariko is a heartwrenching, heartbreaking, and soul shattering story about death, abuse, grief, and healing. It’s also a story about love and friendship and affection and continuing to live with others in mind. With a dose of comedy, a heck of a lot of heart, and a resolution that will leave you sobbing, My Broken Mariko is one of the best manga of 2020. Read with care, but if you can, please don’t pass up such an important josei title in localization and manga in general.

I had to take a few deep breaths while reading this because it is a very tough read. Basically it’s about a woman named Shi who discovered her best friend Mariko passed away due to suicide and she wants to ensure she gets her wishes. Mariko had a tough life with her parents such as her father doing absolutely terrible things to her and the fact her mother didn’t protect her. I have to say, the character development with Shi was great like I wish there was more than 3 chapters cause I really wanted to find more about her as a person. I even wanted to find out more about her and Marikos friendship (it seemed like a relationship from what I gather but it might be a misunderstanding). The art was very good as well. The psychological elements really are good at making your heat sink because the story was just super sad!

If you or someone you know are affected by the events happening in this manga for real, please please please go to http://www.suicide.org/international-... to reach out for help.

TW: suicidio, violenza, stupro, autolesionismo.

My broken Mariko descrive alla perfezione tutto ciò. Intenso e doloroso. Consigliato!

on a journey to scatter the ashes of her best friend who recently committed suicide, shiino must come face to face with her grief and overcome it with the help of a few stangers who want the best for her simply for being human and for being there

there's also a western somewhere in this

it deals with some heavy themes, so content warning for domestic and sexual abuse, suicide, gun violence and murder (the last two are in the western chapter)

the manga is short and raw, and manages to showcase the protagonist's fear and anger towards a situation she couldn't prevent and the deep love that ties her to mariko while still maintaining a few moments of levity
