2020 Read #87

Big ol’ MEH. Mabuchi was the only character who stood out (he reminded me a little like a more dense and comical version of Kyo from Fruits Basket), and the character designs for the guys make them all look alike. The main girl is an ultra-fujoshi, but she’s not really that funny because she acts like every other BL-obsessed girl portrayed in manga. The 4-koma style also isn’t utilized in the best way. I don’t know, I just feel like there are better series out there with this kind of premise, like Kiss Him, Not Me and The High School Life of a Fudanshi.

3.5 stars...rough start for me as it's a different style with changing narration from page to page including 4th wall breaks, but I was hopeful by the end it t may get better. It has a different story set-up than I've read before so I'm intrigued.

This book. Hoo boy. It took me 30 pages before I realized it was a 4-koma series so that should tell you roughly how funny it was.

It was barely okay - the characters are pretty underwhelming and it felt rushed all over and wasn’t well written. There’s nothing compelling that’ll make me check out the second volume. Some of the characters are really unpleasant to spend any time with - you can comedically exaggerate an asshole, but at the end of the day he’s still an asshole.

For this type of fujoshi character, ‘Kiss Him, Not Me’ has much better writing/art and for 4-koma you could pick just about anything else on the English market and it would be more entertaining.

Aw, I've had this on my tbr for a while and I thought it was going to be a series I really liked. It's about a clueless fujoshi that runs into boy, who's got a scary face, but is actually a really kind otaku. Because she's a fujoshi she's shipping this boy with all the guys around him, but really he's developing a crush on her. It was way more chaotic than I was anticipating though and kind of a drag to get through. I probably won't continue. It just wasn't something I wanted to read. I was expecting comedy, but I was also hoping for something cute too and it wasn't really that.

Pretty stereotypical in terms of characters. The plot seems pretty similar to Kiss Him Not Me without the competition from other potential love interests.
Confusingly paced and tends to jump from scene to scene skipping out on some conversations and then acts like the audience saw what just happened. You can infer what you missed given the context between scenes, but sometimes a panel or two makes it flow better. Like yes, I know what conversation you would have had with the teacher, but its better to see the interaction than infer it.

Ugh this was soooo boring, it took me almost a month to slog through it... and I have a second volume I bought on sale. The characters are the absolute worst of various stereotypes, and have no real personality or depth. And the way they beat the absolute worst stereotypes of fujoshi over the head is probably the most annoying thing about the whole manga. I wish I had read reviews before I picked up a couple volumes during a sale... phew. Dunno if I’ll bother with the other or not:
