Excellent way to discuss environmental protection with my little nieces and nephews, while missing island holiday season and local river walks.

My childhood bedtime story time with my mum truly birthed my love of reading. I don’t remember seeing many representations of myself in children’s books at the time though, which is probably why Amazing Grace sticks out in my head (swipe to last slide). For this reason, I search far and wide for books featuring Black and brown characters as gifts for my nieces, nephews and godchildren.

For Christmas, my niece received a copy of Clean Up! by Nathan Bryon. Rocket is on holiday from the UK visiting her grandparents in Jamaica. It raises environmental issues in an accessible way, teaching us all something about the plastics crisis faced by the pristine beaches of many Caribbean islands.

Readers who first met Rocket in the picture book, Rocket Says Look Up! will be delighted in see her return. In this book, Rocket, her mother, and her older brother Jamal, appropriately depicted as being glued to his cell phone, are off to the Caribbean Islands to visit her grandparents who run an animal sanctuary there. Rocket is eager to enjoy the island's scenic delights, but she is disappointed when she finds a small turtle wrapped in plastic and notices just how polluted the beach has become. Never one to just stay silent, this young activist goes to each of the individuals on the beach and informs them about the dangers of plastic for marine life. The statistics she quotes must be troubling since she successfully recruits enough folks to clear the beach of all that unsightly trash. And as if that weren't enough, one girl volunteers the services of her mother to repurpose the trash, fashioning bins for trash from the stuff the group collected. Rocket can feel a sense of accomplishment from what she and new friends have done and eagerly anticipate the return of species that have left the area because of all that debris. Back matter includes tips for future environmentalists and resources to learn more about the perils of plastic. The bright colors in the illustrations and Rocket's own earnestness may prompt some young readers to follow in her footsteps in important endeavors like this one.

Firstly, I have to say that my niece Malia, who's opinion is much more important than mine, ADORED this book! She loved all of the illustrations and loved the story as well. For me, I bloody loved this book! It's so so so cute. I also love the whole Rocket Says series, and how educational they all are. I think it's so awesome that this book teaches kids all of these great life lessons and also to care about our planet. I'm a massive climate activist so I loved everything about this book. It teaches kids to clean up after themselves on the beach, and also teaches them of how much our climate has changed over the years, it's sad but it's a fact that kids have to know about.

I loved this book! Also, my niece and I did an absolutely adorable 4 minute YouTube book review which you can view below! It's literary the sweetest!

Thank you so much to the illustrator, Dapo Adeola for sending us a free book from London! It's one of our favorite kids books and everyone should own the Rocket series books. Educational and fun! Also the illustrations were to die for.

Rocket is back once again, this time to clean up the beach! She is headed to visit her grandparents at their🏝 island home with her mom and brother Jamal. She's got big plans, including surfing like Jamaican surfing 󰝍 competitor, Imani Wilmot. While out enjoying the shore, she discovers a baby 🐢 sea turtle trapped in plastic. Thankfully her grandparents run an animal sanctuary so they can care for the injured animal, but this prompts Grampy to mention that the local 🐋 whales have disappeared thanks to all trash along the beaches and ocean. Rocket, being the determined child that she is, spreads the word on the litter and plastic pollution, gathering beach-goers to form a 🗑 clean up crew. The beach is clean in no time!

It's no secret that we love Rocket! Her passion and drive at such a young age is inspiring. This is a great read for discussing plastic pollution and how it affects our wildlife. Included are tips on how to help keep our beaches clean and websites for additional resources.

This brilliant sequel to Look up! takes the reader on a journey to the Caribbean islands where rocket visits her grandparents along with her mother and older brother, Jamal who is constantly on his phone (still!).

When Rocket explores the beach, she finds a baby turtle stuck in some plastic. Rocket makes it her mission to learn about the plastic pollution problem and makes sure everyone around knows about it too. She is a wonderful role model for children of all ages.

Themes of this story include plastic and rubbish pollution and caring about the environment.
This wonderful book can be used across all the Primary years for storytime, PSHE lessons or specific days such as Earth Day.

The illustrations are truly wonderful and the story talks about serious issues in an age appropriate manner. My small human loved it as much as the first in the series, unfortunately now she wants to go surfing and save turtles… I now need to find a way to help her do that!

This picture book was wonderfully executed! Its purpose is to spread awareness of plastic pollution on the ocean and how dangerous it is for ocean life. It explains this in a way that young readers can understand and it does not come across as “preachy.” In the book, a girl visits her grandparents, who run a beach-side animal sanctuary. While she is there, she finds a baby turtle who is caught in a plastic can holder. When she brings the turtle to her Grampy, he shows her the situation at the beach. She recruits other beach-goers by giving them facts about plastic pollution and they all help to clean the beach. There is more to the story, but I hope this is enough to make you want to pick it up and give this book a try. Enjoy!

Rocket isn't kidding when he tells us readers:

My grandparents are the best. They run whale-watching tours and have an animal sanctuary behind their house.

Truly, I loved both sets of grandparents. But they weren't cool to this degree or, more precisely, were cool in a way that a child could recognize."

LOL, WATCH GRANDMA SURF

By the end, I'm absolutely loving this book. Especially the message of environmental awareness, and particularly the idea of asking folks who come to the ocean to stop dumping their trash, their plastic, their soda cans, etc.

And then the art, oh, wow! You'll see, Goodreaders.

IN CONCLUSION

By now I've read many picture books with an environmental message, but to me this one stands head and shoulders above the rest, thanks to the creativity and passion, plus the fabulous illustrations by Dapa Adeola. Magnificent text by Nathan Bryon, too.

In Rocket Says Clean Up! Rocket, her brother, and their mother visit their grandparents in Jamaica who run whale watching tours and an animal sanctuary. However, the beach there is covered in plastic, and Rocket and the Cleanup Crew help clean the beach. The book includes facts about trash in the sea and the last page lists ways kids can help clean up the beaches such as using reusable water bottles, wearing chemical-free sunscreen, and disposing of trash properly. The book is a great reminder to children and adults alike that we can take steps to reduce the trash in the oceans.

Rocket is thrilled to visit her grandparents at their home near the ocean! Rocket is ready to build sandcastles and surf, when she notices that the beach is practically covered in plastic. After rescuing a turtle trapped in trash, Rocket knows she needs to do her part to convince everyone to clean up the beach.

I'm excited for the return of passionate young Rocket and her drive to make a difference. In addition to colorful illustrations, this book has a great message about helping the environment that may make it a good fit for a STEM or beach storytime.

Rocket's trip to the beach doesn't go the way she planned - there's a ton of plastic all over the place and a baby sea turtle gets all tangled up in it. But this won't stand while Rocket's around! It's time to CLEAN UP!

This is very cute. The illustrations are bright and pop off the page. Rocket comes from a diverse family and the rest of the book's characters are diverse too. I love the message of environmentalism and doubly love that there are additional suggestions and resources at the back of the book. Perfect for any science/environment minded kiddo.

Picture book. Lots of diversity in people shown. Main character appears brown with braids/curls/puffs. Diverse child, loving family, GREAT message about cleaning up the earth for wildlife. Text is bold, large, and easy to read. Lots of white space. Good for storytime or class readaloud (preschool-1st grade). Themes this will be useful for: Earth Day, nature, not to litter, about vacations, or even family.

Rocket is very excited that she’s going on holiday to see her grandparents at their island Animal Sanctuary. But when she gets there, she discovers that the beach is full of plastic rubbish that is endangering the local wildlife. Can Rocket organise a beach clean up and save a baby turtle that has been tangled up in plastic?

'Clean Up!' is a bright, fun and inclusive story with an important environmental message.

After reading and loving Rocket Says Look Up with my daughter of course we had to pick this next instalment up, and it was a truly wonderful edition and a great way to start a conversation and understanding about keeping the ocean & beaches free of plastic. I love this book!! Rocket goes to visit her grandparents and finds a sea creature tangled in plastic. Plastic is taking over the ocean and beaches and is harming marine life. Rocket finds ways to help clean up.

There are little bits of "Did you know.." information in bubbles and the back of the book also includes resources on how you can help clean up too.

Cute. A smidge heavy-handed with the environmental messaging, but probably a-okay for the age range of ideal readers. Love how the community came together, and that Rocket led the charge with her family.

I LOVE Rocket's stories! Grandparents are rad, she's as thoughtful as ever, and the solution the Clean Up Crew came up with to upcycle the trash they cleaned up to serve as a poignant reminder to mind your littering was killer!

Nongendered kid of color loves their grandparents and cares about wildlife. Community comes together to clean up the beach AND recycle the trash they find. Not too sad or hard-hitting but gets the point across. Thumbs up.
