Without uttering a word…

… she gives a dire warning of apocalyptic proportions.

Climate horrors that destroyed civilization hundreds of years ago will come again.

I see her across the table as we wait for the spring sacrifice.

Beautiful. Spirited. Strong.

And prophetic in the most shocking way.

On our island, far from the violence of the mainland, the inhabitants live with a false sense of security. Only we understand the dangers. And we will do what it takes to prevent disaster from striking again.

A catastrophe looms large. Peril lurks at every turn.

To save the island, we must risk it all.

Passionate about reading and writing for as long as she can remember, Stephanie was inspired to create her own literary worlds by the books she has lost herself in over the years (some of her favorites include: the Harry Potter series, The Road, 1984, Wool and Station Eleven).

Stephanie writes speculative fiction in the wee hours of the night after her children have gone to sleep. She particularly loves writing stories about characters who find themselves in unusual or challenging situations, and exploring how they deal with the fallout.

Having lived on several different continents over the last ten years, Stephanie is also an avid traveler. She married her British husband in Las Vegas with Elvis as celebrant, which was just as fun as you would imagine.

This is a fast-paced adventure of a book. A unique look at a world after Great Floods have destroyed most of civilization as we today know it.

The people of the village believe the Great Floods were punishment for the sins of their ancestors and that the only way to survive is by following the teachings of The Book.

But there are those who believe in science and that the truth is much more than one Book.

Good for people who enjoy post-apocalyptic stories, fast-paced adventures, and sci-fi.

I received a digital arc in exchange for an honest review. This is simply my opinion on the book and is not influenced by any external factor.

A fantastic mix of dystopia and climate change fiction done right! I haven’t read any climate change fiction before this, so I didn’t know what to expect. However, I can say with confidence that this book did not leave me disappointed. Such a great and intense story, one that kept me reading late into the night, anticipating what would happen next in Chris’ adventure. It was an exciting read right up to the end.

We follow the adventure from Chris’ point of view, with a cast of diverse characters. Young and old, male and female, and even children and parents have their roles to play. Additionally, the inclusivity accommodation of disabilities is also represented here as Delphine is deaf and cannot speak!

In a way, the story itself reminds me of life in the present. True, we haven’t had an apocalypse or the great floods that happened in the book, but with the way things are going now, climate change is inevitable. I read an article before reading this book that by 2100, some countries will no longer be able to sustain human life due to the constant and intense change.

There was violence in this but nothing too graphic. Fair warning, people and animals do die in this story. This is a clean read with minimal language, but due to the violence and dark theme, I wouldn’t recommend it to younger, less mature readers.

If you like dystopias filled with adventure, rebellion, violence, betrayal and action, then this is book is definitely for you. It’s not the typical dystopia in the sense that it takes place in the real world and not in a completely make-believe setting and involves the current problem of climate change, but this fresh take on the genre brings a new perspective, and by following Chris and Delphine to warn the others about the imminent floods threatening to destroy the world again, prepare to be sucked into an intense and exciting story.

My rating: 4/5.

In general, I'm not a large climate fiction fan, but this was unique enough.

This book gave me some serious The 100 vibes, and I enjoyed the suspense in feeling this. Ada reminds me of the Sky People, and Chris and his people are the Grounders, only Ada seems to know more about what's going on then Chris. The tsunami that threatens them reminds me of Praimfaya, especially with the references that it's going to come again. Obviously, as a post-apocalyptic, there is the sadness and the helplessness of being in a situation that is desperate and unknown.

Despite the references to The 100, the tone of the story is milder and noticeably less adult despite the macabre scenes of gunfire. The surreal-like quality of Chris' perspective makes him seem younger and more naive than he might actually be.

It has the right amount of action and cultural difference to stay interesting.
With this genre, you can never properly predict the ending, which keeps audiences interest piqued.

As far as the cover goes, it made me think that a Roman soldier somehow got caught in a weird time heist in a Lord of the Rings scene. Definitely eye-catching, if not slightly confusing for this genre.

Absolutely loved this book! Despite not being my usual genre, I was hooked from the start.

The book begins with celebration and romance and builds up to a riveting crescendo, one suspenseful page at a time. Indeed, there are parts at the end that literally took my breath away for the drama and intensity created and the manner in which the scenes ultimately unfolded for the reader.

The author does a masterful job of building up the characters and drawing you in to a storyline that, at times, seems eerily too close to home.

I cannot wait for book two!

Fantastic read and a real page turner-
Chris and his friends live in a post-apocalypse society in the US where it is up to the younger generation to find the truth and a solution. While life on Martha’s Vineyard was idyllic, the Elders hid a sinister secret. But life on the mainland is even more terrifying, squalid and ruled by drug gangs.

Can’t wait for Book 2 to come out!

This was ok. Interesting view of how life on earth could be after catastrophic climate change. Though I had too many questions about what was going on that weren't answered.

love the concept. writing was good. but it was like a song that would miss a beat ever 4 notes. I guess would I call it a good song idea that never found its rhythm. the meeting between the two main characters was top of the line. then it all faded away

A Minimalist World

I connected well with the characters in this story. They were compassionate, complex, young, and believable. The plot was simply laid out and clear to follow. It was the world building that left me wanting. It takes place three centuries in the future, yet it felt more like three centuries in the past. There was no food, medicine, technology, even electricity. It felt more like a rural, feudal society. This was too much of a disconnect for me.

Worth reading

It's the first I've read after a disaster and I enjoyed it just a little slow at times. There was a lot to cover though

The blurb for this book originally caught my eye, and it definitely lived up to that with action and adventure. The concept was creative as well. All that being said, it just didn't totally hold my attention the way other books have, and I would have loved to see a little more character development of the romance between Delphine and Chris, as I think it seemed like there was more that could have been said there. Overall though, a solid read!
