Welcome to Starry Hollow, where spells were made to be broken.
Bentley Smith is tired of being the red-headed stepchild in the office of Vox Populi and is determined to prove his mettle by warming up the cold case involving Sheriff’s Nash’s murdered father. The deeper digs, however, the more uncomfortable he becomes when the information he unearths implicates one of Starry Hollow’s very own.
Meanwhile, Ember is dealing with the fallout from her refusal to give Aunt Hyacinth the power she craves, which has greater consequences than she anticipated.
Will Ember be able to sustain the fairytale life she’s built in Starry Hollow or will it all finally crumble to dust? Magic & Misfits is the thirteenth book in the Starry Hollow Witches paranormal cozy mystery series.

This is a fun series, a simply mystery that doesn't take much to uncover. The characters are interesting and unique. When Ember finds she's out of a job, shunned by the coven and at odds with Aunt Hyacinth, she must examine her life and decide what her next step will be. Ember and Raoul takes up the cold case of the sheriff's father's death. As well as help a familiar find a new witch, the quirky characters will make you laugh out loud.
So not what I expected but I love this series and will read wherever it goes. I feel like it’s going full circle with Ember and her relationships and I’m all for it. I thought he want ever right for her in the first place. Ember and Raoul are the best duo ever!
This was a good addition to the series. The plot and subplots move quickly, making it hard to put the book down. I can't wait to see Emma's journey continue.
This is an entertaining urban fantasy/paranormal cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters and a fun and entertaining storyline. Amber Rose a young woman who grew up in New Jersey until her and her daughter were whisked away by strangers to a magical town. She soon finds out that she was actually born a witch to a very powerful family of witches. Now her and her daughter are learning how to use their magic and beginning new lives and brand new world. Follow along as Amber Who is working for her aunts newspaper and his honing her skills as a investigative reporter. Fines and investigates crimes and misdemeanors for the paper in her town. Some mild romance lots of entertainment and lots of action magic and fun. Check it out you will not be disappointed it.
As Aunt Hyacinth stews over Embers refusal to pass over Ivy's power Ember and Marley do their best to ward Rose Cottage.
With her lessons cancelled by Hyacinth her job and Marley are all Ember can focus on but word is out and as Marley is being bullied by the other students she's just as determined to sort it on her own.
When Alex has to cave to Hyacinth Ember takes over looking through the cold case files from the death of the Sheriff's father while searching for a new job. Maybe there's a whole new career out there but first she needs to work out what marketable skills she has.. and operating a microwave doesn't seem to be in high demand!!
Ember’s magically and socially powerful Aunt Hyacinth does not allow disagreement at all. Ember has power that Hyacinth wants, and considers hers by right. And when Hyacinth is denied something, well, out come the tantrums of the 2 year old we all knew was inside her. Except, it’s more like the tantrum of a 2 year old with a fully functional wand and scepter. As the results of Hyacinth’s rancor spiral, both Ember and Marley are hurt by the fallout. I think this may be my favorite Starry Hollow yet, as Ember and Marley check in with each other, stay strong in the face of their ensuing difficulties, and make some hard decisions.
I don't understand why the author would break up the relationship between Alex and Ember! I was so happy when they came together even though the sheriff was a nice guy I didn't really see them together. Alex is her perfect match and he deserves to be happy to even if he has issues, which I think if she gave more time than she gave him it would work out. Ember was pushing him away even I could see that she claims she gave them time but I feel it was more she wanted instant gratification. Please bring these two soulmate back together because I can't see Alex can do well without her or her him on an emotional level, they love each other.
Ember Rose has been tossed to the side by her powerful aunt. Hyacinth wants the power and Ember refuses to give it. Once everyone in town finds out, Ember's magic tutoring stops, Marly is picked on in school, Ember loses her job and her boyfriend. Almost everyone is scared of being on the wrong side of Hyacinth Rose but her cousins stand by her.
Ember takes up the cold case of the death of Sheriff Granger's father. Ember and Raoul are working closely together to solve this and help a witchless familiar find his match. As she gets close to solving the murder she is, of course, in danger. Will her new magic be enough to save her?
THIS is what I've been waiting for! Ember is mature, thoughtful, empathetic, and helpful throughout the story. She takes on a cold case while dealing with a barrage of blows and solves it, and I especially enjoyed this Jersey girl remembering who she is and owning her real power in the end. Marley has always been wonderful, but the resilience she's exhibiting now is welcome. The ramifications from the murder are touching, and the climactic battle does not disappoint. I hope the author continues on this trajectory for the Jersey Roses; I'm looking forward to Book 14!
This is pretty much the hell book for Ember and Marley.
Marley is being bullied at school due to her aunt. Ember's magic lessons are ended due to her aunt. A major problem with her job arises and that's not the only major problem she faces.
Still, both Ember and her daughter do the best they can and Ember has idea for earning money.
I think her aunt is pretty much disgusting in the way she acts. She's also cannot be trusted at all. She's a power-mad megalomaniac and doesn't seem to care about the damage her actions are causing to either Ember or Marley.
It's good to see how both Ember and her daughter manage together against this heavy-handed drive for power shown by the aunt.
In this book we find Ember on the outs with Aunt Hyacinth after her revelation of wanting Ivy's magic. Ember refuses to give it to her. The consequence of her refusal is massive. She loses almost everything. What will she do now? also Bentley is investigating Granger father death but gets side tracked with work. Ember gets given the responsibility of finding out who it was. Will she discovers the culprit was and why? Will. She get out of the danger she placed herself in during the investigation? Fantastic series!!!
Another great visit to Starry Hollow, though Ember and Marley are dealing with the fall out of what happened in the previous books, and are having a rough go of it. However, Ember begins to take stock of what's important and begins to determine some new pathways forward, and it's great to see her taking a bit more agency now. Arnold Palmer is an absolute delight, and it's great to see Ember help out both this pink fairy armadillo and Granger. I hope things start looking even more up for her in the next book!
Ember intends to find out who killed the Sheriff's father
Ember is still reeling from absorbing Ivy's power and her Aunts Desire to have it. Auntie has cut off all of Ember's tutoring and basically cut them from the family. Ember must come up with a way to provide for her daughter and herself with no job. Ember takes over the Sheriff's father case as a way to take her mind off of things, what she finds leaves her in more danger
Did I feel sad for Ember? A bit. But one part I’m seriously happy for is that a certain person is gone at last.
And what’s there not to be good despite Ember’s sad situation with her aunt? Raoul really makes me anticipate each book with pleasure, and each page with a smile or a laugh.
And there’s Granger, of course… I can only have hope for him now, at last!
Annabel chase and all of her books just keep getting better and better. I don't know how she writes such wonderful characters on such a consistent schedule.
Ember and Raul were gold in this book and I loved every minute I spent reading it. You know it's a good book when you rush to see how it ends but don't ever want it to every actually end.
Ember Rose has been tossed to the side by her powerful aunt. Hyacinth wants the power and Ember refuses to give it. Once everyone in town finds out. Marly is picked on in school. Ember loses her job, the tutoring stops, everyone is scared of being on the wrong side of Hyacinth Rose. Read and enjoy!
She knew there were going to be repercussions for her refusal to turn over the power. She's had her life uprooted once before, but this time it seems especially cruel when her actions have repercussions for her daughter. Shame on all the sycophants who abandon Ember and kowtow to Aunt Hyacinth.
Witch Fight! Witch Fight! Somebody Call the Black and Whites!
OMG! It’s here! Ember solves the murder of Sheriff Nash’s father! But will she live to tell the Sheriff? It’s a fight to the death you don’t want to miss! And of yeah: Aunt Hyacinth sucks. Be there or be square! DO NOT MISS THIS ONE! Give me those damn smelling salts, Hyacinth!
Aunt hyacinth is such a B! I really want Ember to come into her magic from Ivy and just blow her aunt out of the water and show her she is not one to be messed with. I also super glad to see her and Alec are no more. I never liked him and they were not a good fit. Hoping Ember will get back with Granger soon!! Look forward to reading more about Embers new career future.
This series gets better with each book! I love the world that the author has created and getting to revisit it each book. The characters are intriguing and continue to grow each book. The plot is so well done and will keep you turning pages right up to the end. I'm looking forward to reading the next book!
I'm warming to Raoul, I am pleased with the Rose cousins, and thrilled at Marley handling the bullies. Ignoring bullies doesn't work and I'm glad Chase didn't pretend that it would, but Market's solution was brilliant! And I am glad Ember was able to "Shake it off"!
This book was much better than the previous two. It seems like the author was maybe rushing to get to this book, and forgot things from previous books. This time she nailed it. I enjoyed the murder mystery in this one. There were also a lot of interesting changes, and now I’m more excited to see where the story goes next.
I love all the characters in this group. It is sad to see a rift in the family but in all families there are good times and bad times. Lets see where all this leads in the next books. Live the series.
Ember, Marley, and the residents of Starry Hollow are always a treat. This book moved in a different direction, no spoilers, and saw a look of changes in their lives. Fun, fast paced and so enjoyable
This was a great book. I enjoy this series and author but this is one of the best lately. Sometimes you have to lose everything to remember how strong you are and what's important. This story brings me back to the beginning and why I like the series. Well done.
Enjoy the sarcasm and one-liners. Mystery, complicated relationships and family. Was disappointed about the abrupt end to the relationship but curious to see where her love life goes now.
