CLAMP originally began in 1989 as a twelve-member dōjinshi circle, but by 1990, the circle had diminished from twelve to seven. Of the remaining seven, Tamayo Akiyama, Sei Nanao, and Leeza Sei left the group during the production of the RG Veda manga. Other former members of CLAMP also included Soushi Hishika, O-Kyon, Kazue Nakamori, Yuzuru Inoue and Shinya Ōmi. Currently, there are four members in the group.

In 2004, CLAMP's 15th anniversary as a mangaka group, the members changed their names from Nanase Ohkawa, Mokona Apapa, Mick Nekoi, and Satsuki Igarashi to Ageha Ohkawa, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Satsuki Igarashi (her name is pronounced the same, but written with different characters) respectively. The August 2004 issue of Newtype USA, a magazine specializing in events of the anime and manga subcultures, reported that the members of CLAMP simply wanted to try out new names. In a later interview with Ohkawa, it was revealed that initially Mokona wanted to drop her surname because it sounded too immature for her liking, while Nekoi disliked people commenting that her name was the same as Mick Jagger's. Ohkawa and Igarashi, wanting to go with the flow of Nekoi's and Mokona's name changes, changed their names as well.

In 2006, they made their first USA public debut at Anime Expo in Anaheim, California. They were well received at the convention, with 6,000 fans in attendance at their panel.

I love this art book! It looks like mostly water colours and coloured pencils to my uneducated art critic eye. Lovely, soft colours. Vivid, energetic, detailed splash art.

Here's the feather in my cap for finding this book tossed in a pile of others in a downtown Toronto book store: There is a HUGE chunk of pages devoted to splash art, full-page size, for one of my favourite--and usually ignored--CLAMP manga: Suki: A Like Story. Imagine my delighted shock.

There are a few pages of art for Tokyo Babylon (Subaru and his sister, none with his cruel lover, alas) and Legal Drug: my two other favourites. But the big treat was the huge section for Suki.

Could be improved with a little bit of text, me thinks. Only because I am a word worshipper.

A mí me gustó más el North Side, porque incluye a mis personajes favoritos, pero no quisiera restarle mérito a esta otra recopilación de ilustraciones; al fin y al cabo son de CLAMP y estas señoras son al manga lo que Orson Welles al cine.

CLAMP South Side is another beautiful artbook that shouldn't be missing from any CLAMP collection. Unlike CLAMP North Side, this artbook has only very few crossover illustrations but instead covers many of their earlier and shorter series. It's mostly notworthy for the series that don't have their own artbook such as Many of Many Faces, Duklyon: Clamp School Defenders, CLAMP School Detectives, Suki, CLAMP School Paranormal Inv... Clamp School Paranormal Inv... CLAMP School Paranormal Inv...CLAMP School Paranormal Investigators, Rex, Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland, The One I Love, Legal Drug and Shirahime-Syo. There are also a handful of Wish illustrations but they are of less interest given that there is an extra artbook just for that series.

As it features so many different series, the style and materials used in this artbooks vary quite a bit. As a bonus, there's a nice section at the back with some step by step information on how their art was created and what materials they used for it.

La continuación del North Side, donde veremos otras ilustraciones de obras menos conocidas de CLAMP, muy bellas y detalladas, que servirán para conocer más ampliamente la trayectoria y obras de estas grandes artistas.

Beautiful artwork from many different works by CLAMP. I was hoping there's be more pictures from Wish, though, as it's one of my absolute favourite CLAMP works...

I'm the wrong audience, as it turns out I've read none of the series included here!
I appreciated the insights at the end into their [CLAMP is an all-women authors/artists collective] art process but it is clearly not something I'm going to replicate.
