Stone Barrington #57

Double Jeopardy

Rate this book
Stone Barrington faces down danger on all sides in the latest thriller from perennial fan favorite Stuart Woods.

Stone Barrington is settling in for a stretch in New York when he receives news that demands immediate action. An old family matter has unexpectedly resurfaced, and Stone must decamp to the craggy shores of Maine to address the issue head-on.

There, Stone finds that a dual-pronged threat is hiding in plain sight among the stately houses and exclusive coastal clubs, and the incursion isn't easily rebuffed. These enemies have friends in high places, funds to spare, and a score to settle with Stone . . . and only the cleverest plot will draw them out into the open. From luxuriously renovated homes to the choppy ocean waters, the pursuit can only lead to an explosive end.

I was going to skip a review for this one. I mean it's book #57, yes fifty seven! But I can't help myself and have to share this line;

Ed was momentarily transfixed by the sight of the two women on the upper porch, stark naked and apparently doing stretching exercises.

Tony Roberts is an awesome narrator, he's 81 years old, so you can imagine his voice as these ladies. As I listened, I can't help thinking of two 80 year old naked ladies doing stretching exercises... 😁

Good times with Barrington.🤸🏻‍♀️ 🤸🏻

There's an actual story here instead of the usual Stone bed-hopping clown. Still it could have been better without Barrington laying a college woman. 4 of 10 stars

Stone Barrington is asked to help keep his psychotic relatives, twins Eben and Enos Stone, in jail, but cannot find a reason to do so. After admitting to killing their supposedly abusive parents (and probably their uncle Dick Stone, who willed his Islesboro, Maine home to Stone) are paroled from prison based on model behavior. The twins get part-time teaching jobs at Yale Law School, and buy a home in Islesboro, after Stone buys their family home. The twins are a nasty pair, including trying to kill a pair of law student friends with benefits, after raping the woman. She cannot wait for revenge and plots the twins' demise with Stone's latest paramour after Ed Rawls, Dino and Stone fail.

It is kind of pathetic that two of the last three books in the Stone Barrington series have been nothing more than vengeance killings.

More "mind candy" from Stuart Woods dealing with the Stone Barrington & Friends "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous!"...I've said previously that it is a good thing these people have lots of sex to burn off the calories from all their fine dining and drinking...Truly a guilty pleasure...Barrington and company are facing the difficulties of Barrington's two twin psychotic shirttail cousins Eben and Enos Stone, who probably killed Stone's uncle who willed his Maine estate to Stone...Upon their release from prison, they return to Islesboro, Maine and disrupt Stone's life!

Starting a new Stone Barrington novel is a guilty pleasure, it's not going to make you think deeply about life, and you won't be inclined to solve the world's problems, but for the hours you get to spend catching up with old friends, the world seems to be a warm and wonderful place. These books read like you are running downhill, it takes no effort to start off and you have to work at not being carried away. And sadly, like all great vacations, it ends too soon and makes you wish for just a little more, like a teenager trying to get five extra minutes of sleep. There are very few authors who can do this well, and Woods has been doing it for quite some time. On this day when I got and started this book, I saw the next two books available for sale and understood my instant desire to pre-order both, booking my next vacations before I even began this one.

I have read all of the Stone series and this one is by far the most boring episode. Stone is getting rather boring in his old age 😞

Just another dreadful Stone Barrington novel. The same old, mind-numbing elements of: Dino traipsing behind Stone, buying houses, private jets and of course bedding various young women by Stone. Also, a totally ridiculous, silly plot involving, psychopath twin cousin killers who act like Laurel and Hardy. It is way past old that someone is always chasing after Stone to kill him for no real apparent reason. The audiobook narrator, Tony Roberts has an aging, raspy voice that makes him sound ill.

I've read all of the Stone Barrington series, but for the last decade, I've wondered why I bother. He's no longer interesting and the plots are redundant. My friends and I laughingly say we have a sickness that makes us want to keep up on this sad series. Luckily, the fever has broken. This book is so bad that I won't be wasting my time with anymore Stuart Woods books in the future. Not to worry Mr. Woods, you won't lose any income because I've never paid for any of your books. The library is the only way to read these. Read the first dozen or so in the series, but save yourself the time and stop there.

First time reading Stuart Woods. I like his writing style and character development in such a small book (like 8 hours). This was the story of a set of twins in prison for murdering their parents (and suspected of killing others who are given parole and move back to the island where they killed their parents. They want a fresh start but are so not worth it. It moved along at a quick clip and kept me interested the whole time.

#57 was not as good as many of the ones before. Here is hoping that #58 gets the series moving again!

Double Jeopardy review
Enos and Eben Stone were identical twins who shared a diabolical mind. They were accused of a string of murders but there was insufficient evidence to convict them. However when they killed their parents and a sibling, they confessed and were sentenced to life without parole.
While in prison, the boys were model prisoners and even completed law school. They also helped many other inmates to file appeals for their convictions. They also claimed that the murders were payback for sexual abuse by their father and complicity by their mother.
Eventually they were paroled and decided to return to the small exclusive island in Maine where their family had a summer home.
Stone Barrington, a cousin of the twins, and many others on the island did not want the twins there. Stone, a wealthy NY attorney, bought the former Stone home anonymously using a corporate identity. The twins then decided to buy and renovate another house near their original home.
Stone flew up from NYC with his friend, Dino, the NYC commissioner of Police. He also installed the Jackson’s, a retired couple, to live in the newly purchased home and pose as the buyers. All the while, Stone and his friends were trying to discourage the twins from living on the island. Then the Jackson’s were murdered in a staged murder suicide scene. Finally Stone and his friends decided to take matters into their own hands.
This is a fast paced story of retribution by rich vacationers with access to exclusive clubs, private planes and luxurious summer homes. It is the newest of over 50 books in the popular Stone Barrington series.
I received this ARC from Edelweiss and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Audio book. Maybe it was the narrator, who sounded like a 70+ man, and thus all the characters seemed to be of advanced age. Maybe it was the hole-filled plot, with its not-even-believable-for-fiction scenarios. Twins convicted of murdering their parents, sentenced to life in prison, pardoned by Maine's governor, and given law professor jobs at Yale? Huh? In what universe is that plausible? Besides, they hardly do anything in the book except act weird. Most of the book has the other characters talking about them and how they should kill them, as if it's just something they need to do after they buy new blinds for their windows. And why do half the characters have a British accent? Thankfully the book is short and ends quickly. Awful, but not worse than "The Dark Pageant." 1.5 stars

Call me crazy but I love the Stone Barrington series! I have read every one of them! What’s not to like, the fantasy of being a billionaire and owning house en Paris, London and several on the east coast! A private plane and he is such a cad when it comes to women. But he is generous, good hearted and his best friend Dino is a great contrast.

These books are short and make me laugh out loud with the antics of Stone and company!

First and foremost, this is book 57 in a series and although you don't need to read every book to be able to enjoy it, most people reading it already know what they're going to get. I'm not going to spoil the plot or anything, but if you're a fan of Stone Barrington, then you'll enjoy this book.

I enjoyed Double Jeopardy a bit MORE than most of the recent books because it's not about the election or politics in any way. I didn't dislike all those books, but it makes me more likely to give a four star review rather than a five star.

This book was full of interesting action and twists but it's mostly the story of an immortal sex god with infinite money, resources, and the most creative and talented friends in the entire world. And, you already know that if you read these books. Some people don't like them because of that, but then those people can just read other books. I love Stone and Dino and there's a great bit at the beginning where Stone's actually without a woman for a few minutes and Dino's like "Let's go into that random building and wait a second. You'll find someone."

And, he does. There's actually a character in this book who would be perfect to get her own spin-off series, and I hope that happens.

So, the TL;DR : if you like the Stone Berrington books, I predict you'll like this one even more than usual. It would be understandable for a new reader, but not nearly as enjoyable.

I eagerly await the next book ! Read this in one shot.

I give it two stars only because I finished and it distracted me on commuting days. However it deserves less. I listened to the audiobook. The plot is preposterous. 60 & 70 year olds acting like young Tom Cruise wannabes. It seems like a sexist geezer fantasy. The reader in the audio contributed to this impression because he sounds as old as the characters seem to be based in their long career descriptions. Most are retired or nearly there. The constant reference to intelligent adult women as girls was really annoying as well as the gratuitous nudity and lesbian acts for old and pervert male eyes.

As irritating as a few aspects of the Stone Barrington series may be, the books are almost always fast, fun reads that are hard to put down, and this one is no exception.

One of SW's recent best! This is pure thriller... it lacks many of the annoying features of other tales of Stone Barrington. All true fans should enjoy it!

Well another fun romp with Stone Barrington. Frankly at this rate of writing its impressive to have any coherent story! This is a fun airplane or beach read. Either way, I'll continue reading them!

And another glimps in the life of Stone Barrington. A briefly exciting glimps of murder and mayhem. the usual suspects sitting and waiting for something to happen and then a murder by two naked ladies and The End. That's it. It's beyond formulaic. It's the McDonalds amongst books. Prefab. But you can't stop eating it.

The usual type of story with a bit more action. The usual characters and the usual easy and entertaining read. The only negative feature of these stories is that they end too soon, although virtually always with a satisfying ending.

Enos and Eben Stone have been released from prison after serving time for killing their parents. They were suspected of other murders but there was insufficient evidence for them to be convicted. The twins have returned to Maine so Stone, Dino and Lance decamp to Maine. In conjunction with Ed Rawls, whose permanent residence is in Maine, they are in pursuit and are being pursued by the evil twins.
There's plenty of action in the newest book in the Stoe Barrington series and this is a very quick and easy read.

Stone Barrington is back with his usual friends, a pair of revenge seeking twins, a black bear on his porch and of course some new female friends. You will enjoy Carly, a victim of the twins and a Yale Law student, I hope we see more of her.
