Readers’ Comments ‘This is a truly amazing novel for youngsters. It has such a magical feel to it. The children in my class loved the story, particularly the box with the little dragons in it. They also liked the way Ethan and Amelia work together in the story. We all felt it has a Narnia feel to it. We even loved the cover and the small line drawings.’ Primary School teacher, aged 43 ‘This book is not too long which I like as I get lost. Also, it’s easy to understand. I liked the plot of the story and I thought Ethan’s dad was really nice. I was so happy at the end when Ethan had a pal to play with over summer. I think they will have fun with dragons.’ Girl, aged 8 – with a little help from her teacher ‘When I saw the cover I jut wanted to read it. Glad I did. It was fab!’ Boy, aged 7 ‘Charming story, well-plotted and accessibly written for 7 – 8 year olds. It’s also strong in terms of design and layout. Very well done.’ Publisher, aged 55 ‘The characters were the best part. I liked the penguin. You don’t expect to find a penguin in a book about dragons. This book surprised me a lot.’ Boy, aged 7
To Sum It Up: ‘A charmingly written novel for 6 – 8 year olds packed full of wonderfully charismatic characters. A SILVER MEDAL WINNER and highly recommended.’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
A short cute read about a boy named Ethan, whose family isn't the most well off. One day his dad brings home an old wooden box with glass dragons inside. The glass dragons are special, and lead him to the beautiful land of Steorra, a land where dragons fly and animals talk. He shares the secret with his neighbor, who he then bonds with in this new world. New friendships are made, and more adventures to come.
It kind of reminded me of watching Dragon Tales as a kid, but more fantastical.
First in this series. Ethan spends his time inside as he doesn't interact well with the other kids in his neighborhood. He doesn't have the toys they do as he and his dad don't have the money for them. His dad brings home an old wooden box with glass dragons inside. While on summer break, he takes one out and discovers they are actually conduits to real dragons. He ends up in Steorra where animals talk and the stars are multicolored. On his next visit, he goes with his neighbor, Amelia. They bond while there and discover that both have been afraid to admit they were scared of being rejected by the other. The book ends with the hint of more adventures to come.
I thought this was rubbish. I know, it's clearly not for me. My five year old liked it. I asked her why and she said because it was an adventure. It wasn't really much of an adventure. It was just an incredibly cosy account of a couple of kids who get to meet dragons and talking penguins and go to a magical place where they can go in a lake without sinking in the water, drink orange juice and lemonade direct from trees and... there are escalators so they don't have to bother climbing hills. Yawn. The only adventure aspect is will they find a fishing rod that has been hidden. Just tepid beyond belief.
I don't want to come down all harsh on it, but this was very low effort on the author's part. And being a children's book really isn't much of an excuse. There are some amazing children's books. Sure, not all children's books can be amazing, but just because you can get away with this kind of thing doesn't mean you should. That was harsh. Sorry.
This is a beautiful, magical, feel good book and I’m so glad I read it.
I loved Ethan and Amelia. Not all children enjoy summer holidays, and I love how the author showed this. Ethan and his dad are lovely, but that doesn’t mean Ethan doesn’t have difficulties.
The magic was wonderful. I loved the land they travelled to. It was so original and fun. I know I would have loved this book as a child, and I would have squeezed my toys to see if they’d transport me to a fun magical land. I’m still tempted to try as an adult!
The sweet illustrations add to this charming tale.
3.5 what a tricky one to review. As many others have said, my 4yo loved this. It's simple and has fun elements. There just isn't much of an actual story. Not much of a conflict, no real adventure, no character development, and not well edited. Just a nice little book about 2 kids, dragons and a magically boring world. It felt like it drops a mixture of things young children will find pleasing and mixed it up with no purpose. But how can I ignore the fact that my son was excited to read more every day? So 4 stars it is.
As an adult I found this charming but a bit bland. My 9 year old son who I was reading to was enraptured. I was pleased by the light hand the author wrote with. There was not over reaching or over explanation. This is a book for young readers and it doesn’t apologize or try to be more then it is.
RRA; 5-9 I've had this in my tbr for over a year, and had completely forgotten any details about it. It was quite a pleasant surprise to be reading a children's book.
A lovely story about starting to make friends, how to overcome some of the fears possibly holding you back, and how working together can be nicer than doing it on your own. And dragons 🙂
My son would not let me put it down. He was talking about what might happen whenever I did, and genuinely enjoyed the adventure. We're already on book two and can't wait for book three!
"It was amazing! Ridiculous, but amazing!" (Exact quote from my 8 year old son.) It's one of the best childrens books I've read with my son in a while. Well done!
