Boston Hawks Hockey #1

The Sweet Talker

Rate this book
I’ve sworn off hockey players. Until the pregnancy test turns pink.

Noah Scotch is revered in Boston, a veritable god on the ice. I’m a nerdy, newly minted college professor who would rather color code my planner than hit the club scene. Noah shouldn’t look at me twice but when he does, I falter.

Who can blame me?

The sweet talker with the deliciously chiseled abs and sinful chocolate eyes is a force. On and off the ice. One hot and intense night with Noah has me second guessing my lack of a dating life.

Friends with benefits? He offers, I dive in headfirst.

Growing up in a hockey family, I know better than to get serious with a player. But the more time I spend getting to know Noah, the more my intention to keep things casual rings false. Now, I’ve got a hopeful heart and a baby on the way.

I just need to tell Noah. But when I do, will I end up with everything I never knew I wanted? Or on my own?

Aww such a sweet sports novel.

I’m usually up for some alpha/macho/dominating/grumpy/probably an a-hole Hero but not on this one.

Noah was such a cute and sweet softie, I’m not surprised Indy crushed on him when she was a teenager, and Indy was a sweet and intelligent woman . They both had their own trust issues and were not ready to commit, but this was a good story.

Not too much drama, not too complicated, a good old hockey sports romance, exactly what I was expecting ❤️

I personally don’t think you should be allowed to call it a “surprise baby romance” if there are zero cute baby scenes!!! She doesn’t even get pregnant until the last couple chapters 🙄

Indy has recently returned to Chicago. She is a College professor, very career focused and doesn’t make socialising a priority. Her bestie Claire convinces her to come along to her brother’s hockey team drinks at a local bar. He plays for the Boston Hawks and she knows there will be plenty of eye candy for them both.

Noah plays in the same team and has known Indy for years but they haven’t seen each other in a while. She has definitely grown into a gorgeous woman and it’s refreshing to hang out with a girl who doesn’t fawn all over him like other girls he meets.

When Claire needs to go home, Indy isn’t ready to leave so Noah kindly offers to get her home. This eventually leads to her being naked under him. One night with Noah reminds her what she has been missing, amazing hot sex.

Indy assumes that now they have it out of their system things will go back to friendship but Noah has other ideas. He proposes a friends with benefits arrangement which means there will be no expectations for anything more than that. However, the intentions for keeping things casual pretty much go out the window pretty quickly. They both feel this incredible pull between them.
They seem to connect on every level and Noah has never felt this comfortable with any girl before.

Indy knows that Noah only does casual so she protects her heart by acting indifferent, playing it cool when her heart is telling her the opposite. She has had past experience with dating a hockey player and always said she wouldn’t do it again. Noah has her second guessing that now, It’s like they are too scared to admit what they are feeling in case it changes things. They need to find the courage to be completely honest with each other or risk losing what could be the most amazing life together.

‘The best surprises in life are the ones you don’t see coming, the ones you don’t wait around for, the ones that happen with those who matter most.’

This is the first story in this series and I’m already excited about Claire’s story. Really easy to read, well written and I look forward to more.

Indy and Noah were a fun couple to read about and I enjoyed their story. They had an easy relationship that came off as really sweet which was fun to see. I'll definitely be reading more in the series and there's so many characters I can't wait to read more about.

My one annoyance though was the "trope" of a surprise pregnancy. Possible spoiler...

Guys, that didn't even happen until after 70% in the book! That's such a pet peeve of mine in books, don't put something in the blurb or promote the book with it if it doesn't happen until way late into the book and doesn't actually help the story move along. Luckily I didn't go into this book wanting that one specific trope but it still got a little annoying the longer the story went on and the main part of the blurb wasn't actually happening. And it did honestly affect my enjoyment since then it was just on my mind the entire time reading.

3.5 stars. Middle of the line book overall… it could have been really good with a few changes.

1. The heroine is great - super educated, independent, and self-possessed. She’s not falling all over herself to he with the hero. She knows her self-worth.

2. The hero is mostly good - he’s generally very sweet and likable. He was engaged before his fiancee cheated on him and left him a day before the wedding. He has become a manwhore since then and slept with ALL the puck bunnies. I didn’t like that he thought the heroine was too good for him and actively worked to push her away.

3. There’s a small part of the story (when the MCs are separated) where the hero basically agrees to go out to a bar with his team after the game to move on with his life. It’s somewhat easy to imply that it’s to get with other women so he can get over the heroine. It’s what he did after his engagement broke up to get over his ex. Then the story skips ahead several days and we never find out what happens. VERY FRUSTRATED with this part!!

4. Storyline was pretty straight forward, nothing totally unexpected. This does have a surprise baby trope…

5. Idk if I’ll continue the series. Book 2 sounds like they’ve been in love with each other but both held back and were with other people. Book 3 also sounds like some sort of friends to lovers. I’m just not a fan of that trope.

6. The steam was somewhat weird in this. There was plenty of sex, but it was half-on and half-off page. Seemed like the author couldn’t decide how many details to include. It started off totally FTB but ramped up as the story went on.

Safe, if you ignore what I wrote in #3
- No virgins but heroine is def less experienced and has been celibate for 6 months iirc
- Hero manwhore for the months after his engagement ended, but overall a good guy and stays loyal when in relationships
- No OW drama besides some jealousy
- Mild OM drama from heroine’s ex and her childhood best friend.
- No scenes with OM/OW
- No cheating
- Surprise baby trope

4 Star Review The Sweet Talker (Boston Hawks Hockey #1) by Gina Azzi

Gina Azzi is a relatively new author to me and I have no idea why that is the case. The Sweet Talker was an entertaining book that I was fully invested in from the start.

Agreeing to go out with her cousin Claire, Indy has no idea how that one decision will change her life and not only her life, but that of Noah, a player for the Boston Hawks hockey team.

Indy has been focused on her career as a college professor for a long time and has had little or no time for socializing. All that changes when she and Claire attend a party with Claire's brother where she meets his teammates from the Boston Hawks. When Claire has to leave early, Noah offers to take Indy home and before you know it they have a passionate encounter.

The chemistry between Indy and Noah is intense and instead of diminishing it seems to increase the more they are around one another. When Noah suggests that they enter into a “friends with benefits” arrangement, Indy agrees.

However night’s of passion can cause complications and Indy soon finds out how complicated her life is about to become. What will happen when secrets are revealed? Will it bring Indy and Noah closer together or rip them apart?

One click and find out.

4.5 Stars ⭐️

The Sweet Talker by Gina Azzi, is Book 1 of her Boston Hawks Hockey series and was my first read by this author. Not gonna lie, she had me at hockey and kept me with her smart and sexy heroine and the hockey player who owned her heart.

Indy and Noah are acquainted. She’s the daughter of hockey royalty and the cousin of his team’s captain. He’s a close family friend and her first teenage crush. Indy and Noah are complete opposites. She’s a studious bookworm and new university professor and he’s committed to his team. But together they work. There’s an easiness to them that translates into a great friendship, to a friends with benefits arrangement, to real feelings. Although neither one is prepared and both make stupid mistakes, they truly do love each other and work hard to get their much deserved happily ever after.

The Sweet Talker gets the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval and has me looking forward to Books 2 and 3 of this series. TBR and Enjoy!

The Sweet Talker is a new adult sports romance and book #1 of the Boston Hawks Hockey series.

Indy has recently moved to Boston to take up her role as a Professor; daughter of a hockey star, Indy has vowed to stay away from any romance with hockey players after her heart was broken.

Noah’s relationship broke up because of his passion for his sport; travel to games and training schedules make long-term relations challenging.

Growing up, Indy and Noah have known each other for years; it’s good to be friends and who says friends with benefits has to lead to more?

A good introduction to the series with two very likeable characters. I enjoyed the way they played tourist around Boston and how their realtionship developed over the uneven ground between them.

Well, this was … a book. Nothing special. With my most hated trope ever. But surprisingly, I wasn’t too annoyed. The guy was sweet. The girl was someone I could have been had I wanted to be a professor. I understand why people love this book. I want to read the other stories as well. One thing that annoyed me was the epilogue. I hate it when authors write the epilogue with their next characters. But it was an okay book still.

What a way to start a series! Way to go Gina!

Taking a quote from this series opener-

“The best surprises in life are the ones you don’t see coming, the ones you don’t wait around for, the ones that happen with those who matter most”

Noah & Indy took each other by surprise in so many ways but that was half the fun !
I Loved these two, and how intense their casual connection was!
The rest of the characters were the icing on cake and it makes you excited about their potential stories but in the end there’s one thing that you should know, never say never, because the universe will decide that you will be tested on the fact that you should never say never when it comes to love.

5 sparkling surprise stars!

The audiobook version adds to the enjoyment of this series!

I am a huge sucker for a surprise pregnancy hockey sports romance. All my favorites rolled into one. But if you want to try and tote this as an accidental/surprise pregnancy it should happen in the first 1/3 of the book, not the last 1/3. I did like the storyline between Noah and Indy but I think it would have been better served if the pregnancy happened sooner in their story or not at all. I feel like it was used as an attention grabber in the blurb but their story would have been great without it. A miss for me. But I should say it was well written and I was invested in their story but I felt led on and that rubs me wrong.

I love hockey stories, and this one is so good. I loved Indy and her family. Indy is an only child, but her cousin Claire is like her sister. Claire’s older brother Austin plays hockey in Boston with Noah. I was glad that Noah and his brother Easton had Austin’s family while they were growing up. Noah is so surprised how Indy has grown into such a beautiful woman. I can tell Indy has not let herself have a lot of fun as she got older because she is so smart and has focused her life on getting her Ph.D. It was fun to watch how much she changed when she got around her cousin Claire. I was glad she let herself go with Noah and start to have fun. It is funny when two people think they can have a casual relationship with sex involved, but not let their emotions get involved. Noah and Indy had to go through some good and bad times to get where they belonged. I strongly encourage you to read the book. I was given a copy and voluntarily wrote a review.

3.5 stars. Indy Merrick is trying to let loose with life a little bit more since she’s been so career focused and gun shy about dating again. She moved to Boston several months ago and is an assistant professor who makes being intelligent and a bookworm seem very alluring and sexy to Noah Scotch. He plays ice hockey for the Hawks and is concentrating on his team this season. He’s had a bit of upheaval in his life recently but finds it so easy and natural to hang around Indy. He and his brother are best friends with Indy’s cousin Austin so he has known her for a long time and she’s caught his attention. For two people who aren’t looking for commitment, they connect well and simply enjoy the benefits of being casual. It’s a cute and sweet story, with likable characters and not much in the way of angst or conflict or excess drama. The game changer that serves as the pivot point for solidifying the relationship comes near the end, and again, not a lot of topsy turvy besides some misguided communication. For a quick and simple romantic read about friends to lovers with fast resolution, this would be it.

It’s always so exciting when a favorite author starts a new series...new characters, new experiences, so much potential and that’s exactly what Gina Azzi gives us in the first book of the Boston Hawks Hockey series! And it’s about hockey players! Yum! This first one is a friends to lovers, surprise pregnancy gem. We have Indy, the daughter of a professional hockey player who had her heartbroken by her ex-boyfriend who is a...you guessed it...a professional hockey player. She is totally anti dating hockey players. Friends with hockey players she can do! And in walks Noah, the hottie hockey player friend...with benefits? I love how Indy is herself with Noah. She is who she is and that’s it! But that’s a breath of fresh air for Noah! I love all the new characters..not only Noah and Indy but also Easton, Austin, Claire, Aiden, Torsten, the parents, the list goes on and on! Such a great start to an exciting new series by a one-click author for me!

Noah is a sweet guy through and through. It has been 6 months since his fiance left him when he meets Indy a young proffesor who is beautiful knside and out.
They have know each other since their chuldhood with Noah and his teammates hoping to impress her on the ice but they kinda part ways. Their paths cross again later in a club and things take off from there.
I thought this was more of a one night stand that resulted into a surpirise baby romance but that seemed not to be the case.
Their relationship progresses well and I appreciated how they stood up for each other and supported each other. I didn't like that they lied to each other about their feelings. I especially hated that communication is what caused their split because that was so lame. Indy jumping to conclusions pissed me off and I wanted ger to apologize for that because Noah was right to be angered. I know relationships are not meant to be a case of who holds out the longest but I am petty like that.

I absolutely loved this book!! It’s one of those books that has you cheering for the couple and praying they have a happy ending.

Indy was always shy and a total book nerd. She was smart and wanted to accomplish great things. She didn’t mind being in the background of situations which was hard being that her Dad was a retired famous hockey player. Her first real boyfriend was a jerk and a hockey player. She had sworn off ever dating another one. That’s until she tries to keep it casual with her cousins best friend/teammate.

Noah just had his heart majorly broken after his fiancé of 8 years cheated on him right before the wedding. He decided that was it for relationships, he was going to devote himself to the team and just have hook ups. Well until he also thought having a casual relationship would work. Little did they both know, they would fall in love and much more!

Indy and Noah were a great couple to get to know. They have some history together that makes their transition to lovers relatively smooth. They have great connection, sizzling chemistry and care deeply for each other even though they do not want to admit it. I loved all the side characters that made this story that much heartfelt and funnier. Throw in a surprise or two in the mix and this turn out to be quite easy to read, funny and all the feels kinda book for me.

Once again a new-to-me author turned out to be a hit and I'm super excited to see what happens in book 2 - bring it on, I'm ready!

Indy had a no-dating hockey players rule. She wants to focus on her career as a professor, and not sacrifice her career to that of a hockey-playing husband. Noah just got out of a bad relationship and isn't interested in anything serious. They hook up, and it becomes more.

There's a bit of drama because Indy is the cousin of the team captain. A couple of books are set up.

Great way to welcome in the hockey season back with this amazing new series! 5 hot hockey stars for this one!

Here we meet Noah, out for a team get together before the season starts when he see's her, Indy with her cousin. Wow, he's hooked right then and there. But his past is playing on repeat in his head, he won't commit to someone again. But after spending time with her, he's thinking of ways they can be together.
Indy had a crush on Noah when she was younger, now seeing him she has feelings coming back, but after her last relationship with a hockey player, she's sworn them off.

Can these two put their pasts behind them and enjoy the feelings they have now? Or will the past be what tears them apart. Grab this on release day! You will love it! Can't wait for more in this series!

"You’ll never understand how badly I want you right now. But you deserve more, Indiana. Much more than me, and a hell of a lot more than what I’m capable of giving. All I’ve got is tonight."

The first book in the Boston Hawks Hockey series, The Sweet Talker tells the story of Indy Merrick and hockey player Noah Scotch. Indy and Noah haven't seen each other in years but there's an attraction between them which leads to a friends with benefits arrangement. Indy doesn't date hockey players after a bad breakup with another player and Noah doesn't want to commit after a failed engagement. He doesn't think he can give Indy what she wants and what she deserves. They agree to keep things casual but both begin feeling so much more.

"I can’t make Indy mine, not the way I want to. Not when she deserves the moon and the stars and I can only give her a damn asteroid."

Noah thinks he can't offer Indy the stability and future she desires and starts to push her away. But Indy discovers she's unexpectedly pregnant, complicating her carefully planned life. What will happen when she tells Noah? Will they have a future together or will she be left alone?

I loved the connection between Indy and Noah. Emotions were filled with a passionate intensity and there was so much steam! They fit together perfectly and I wanted their relationship to be so much more than casual. I also loved Noah's relationship with his brother Easton as well as Indy's relationship with her family and their acceptance of Noah as one of their own. Noah's performance on and off the ice along with Indy's ambitions and goals complemented each other beautifully, creating strong and layered protagonists for this story. I loved watching both Indy and Noah learn how to trust their feelings beyond their casual arrangement. However, when Noah began to push Indy away, he harbored too much anger and immaturity and my interest in their story began to wander. The issues between them then seemed to resolve too quickly and I would have preferred to see more angst. I also would have liked to see more focus on the surprise pregnancy as I thought it was introduced rather late in the book almost like an afterthought. This is the second book I have read in this series and I liked seeing the supporting characters I recognize from The Trailblazer. I look forward to reading the stories of the other team members in more of the series.

A self proclaimed nerd professor and a NHL star take a one night stand to a HEA. She is the daughter of a hockey legend and the cousin of his team captain. So she is off limits. He just wants casual, and she does not date hockey players. They both are still feeling out of sorts after past relationship breakups. We fall for Noah and Indy from the Duck tour to the very end. After one night they went straight to friends who hang out. They fell into friendship with ease. It wasn’t easy to stay in the friend zone. They get a unexpected surprise. This story gives us a nice friends to lovers, surprise baby plot with great characters. Smiles and heart eyes all over.

Indy and Noah have a romance that spurs from a good night together. I expected the surprise pregnancy to be much sooner than right near the end. It felt like a cheat on the trope. The story was quick and easy to read. Nothing out of the ordinary happened in terms of storyline.

I kept getting whiplash with the character's heightened moods and back-and-forth feelings. Indy was far too childish, and Noah reacted too quickly, plus he was too alpha when the pregnancy came along. These two didn't seem to fit well, and one minute, they would say one thing and another, they would be singing a different tune. They were definitely missing the mark.

Even though she was raised in a family where hockey ruled her first love was books. Indy has been hurt by a hockey player in the past so she is determined to not go down that road again and instead will focus on her career as a professor. When a night out with her best friend brings Noah back into her life it has her reconsidering her feelings both towards men and hockey players.

Noah is a professional hockey player and Indy’s cousin’s best friend, so they have known each other for years. His romantic past has not been idyllic, and he is dealing with family issues as well. When fate brings Indy back into his life and it isn’t long before their casual relationship may not be enough.

The chemistry between them is intense, the banter witty and although they had a few setbacks along the way they realize that with the right person love can be the most precious gift of all. I listened to an audio copy of the book and enjoyed the performance as they brought the characters and their story to life.

I liked this story in general, but it is branded on Amazon as a surprise baby and while there is a surprise pregnancy in the book it doesn’t come up until 3/4 through the book and is not really the focus of the plot in the story. This one feels like more of a ‘FWB to more’ story. She’s only a few weeks pregnant by the end of the book and it actually ends with her going away in a trip to Asia for work. We don’t see her through her pregnancy or birth. The ending is very much a HFN and not an HEA (the epilogue is a different character as a lead in to the second book and takes place only a week or 2 after the ending).

Some of the timing is confusing in the book too, they’ll say things like ‘3 weeks left’ and then have 4 or 5 weeks go by. The timing of the heroines failed big relationship is also sus- at different points it felt like the break up was 3 years ago, 2 years ago, or longer- I think they said it was 2 but then different conversations kinda lead you in weird directions with it.

Indiana and Noah

A nice surprise baby story with a HFN ending. I liked 90% of the book. Slight disappointment in the HFN ending. It irks me when the ending focusses on an entirely different couple and sets up the next book in the series without really completely resolving the main couple.
