The bigger the secret…
…the greater the body count.

Brooklyn never expected to be on the run, and that too with her companions. With the Syndicate hot on their heels, she sets out on a mad dash around the city to keep them all alive. Fortunately, with a resourceful human by her side and with the help of the shifter, Brooklyn sees a way forward.

Dominic might still have reservations about Brooklyn, but as the danger looms, the more willing he is to risk it all to keep her safe. When the mystery of her father’s death is revealed, he realizes that they have more in common than he originally thought.

Unfortunately, the Syndicate never allows anyone to leave that life behind. If Brooklyn thinks the death of her father is something they are trying to hide, while setting out to destroy her, she is horribly wrong. There is a darker conspiracy hidden in the walls of the place she used to call home.

Her heritage is shrouded in such secrecy, that the Council will do anything to keep it concealed.

Even if it means burying Brooklyn along with it. Something Dominic strongly disagrees with.

Here we find a lot of answers to all of our questions from book one. Love how the author does not put this even further down the road and actually gives us answers. Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of books that it’s book 3 or book 4 before anything’s truly resolved or answered. It’s very annoying for me.

Brooklyn and Dominic are a force to be reckoned with. They deep dive into tearing apart the syndicate. Brooklyn makes it very clear that she will willingly sacrifice herself to save the others. And Dominic and Alice prove to her that she will never be left behind.

As a little surprise pops up here in there, which is wonderful! The only disappointment I feel is that after reading some reviews… Book 3 isn’t necessarily a book. It’s a book 4 that will hold all the answers I am dying for.

Happy reading,
DD🥂

3 very conflicted stars.

Please read the highlights as well as the downsides for a full view!

I love Maya Daniels' books, don't get me wrong (I was literally only gushing about this yesterday), but the amount of inconsistencies in this book - combined with the proofreading errors - really disappointed me. They're such obvious errors, I'm surprised a BETA reader didn't pick up on them. There seems to be a serious disconnect between book 1 and 2: things that happened in book 1 are totally forgotten about so we have to see them happen all over again except in a slightly different way. These are major things that are essential to the plot, like Dominic knowing Brooklyn's secret, and Brooklyn knowing who Dominic's inside guy is. It almost felt like book 2 was written before the details of book 1 were finalised. They even found out the same thing twice in this book! There's more, but I think I went into enough detail.

The characters saved the story. Their personalities are so well-developed, they bring lots of humour to the table, and they just bounce off each other really well. I absolutely love the main trio. Alice is so endearing. I will definitely be continuing the series to see more of them, but I really hope there's no more inconsistencies going forward.

As I predicted, we learned A LOT of secrets in this book - very, very, juicy secrets. The book ends on a cliffhanger, so you can bet I am dying for the next one.

I received an ARC copy, and this is my honest review.

LOWER WORLD is the second book in the Infernal Regions for the Unprepared series and remember how I said the first one wasn't too fast-paced? Yeah, well, we're back to the crazy and frantic pace Maya Daniels is known for!

Don't get me wrong, it is still smoking-hot, and I love how Ms Daniels drags you along into her story, but for me, it just lost a bit of 'something' in the pace. Brooklyn and Dominic are heating up and the trust is building, but with all the action going on, I felt like I missed part of that. Alice is a cracker, as always, and I am loving her role in this.

Now, I was warned about the ending of this book, so I was expecting something. Usually, I end up throwing my Kindle away in disgust at the typical cliffhanger endings, but this time, this time I was okay with it. Maybe it's because I was warned, or maybe it's because although I know Brooklyn is in danger, she is too tough to go down easy, PLUS she has her crew coming for her. And then there is the whole question mark about her mum. So, yeah, cliffhanger but one I'm happy with.

I am still loving this series, and can't wait to see where it goes next. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go and lie down, get my heart rate down, and be ready to start the world at a normal pace, not superspeed!

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and the comments here are my honest opinion. *

Brooklyn and the others are hiding in the safe house. Brooklyn and Domenic are trying to get information from Jonathan. Brooklyn's worst fear comes true, their location is discovered. Brooklyn is worried about her friend as she is showing signs of magic. Brooklyn decides she is going to get information from the worst place possible. Brooklyn will learn the truth about her parents.

This is a rollercoaster ride for Brooklyn. She will make discoveries about herself and her parents. She learns someone close to her knew the truth. There is a lot to the story I didn't write, there is just so much for the reader to discover for themselves.

Wow Wow wow!! This was so very good and the ending leaves you needing more! The characters are so amazing, I just love them. Brooklyn carries a lot of guilt for her past, but I hope she starts to see the blame lies elsewhere. She is a better person than she believes herself to be and I think Alice is the person to help her see that. By the way.. Alice may well be my favourite character here and she finds out there is more to her - she is wonder women in her very own special way! . Dominic has his own demons but the ladies win him around and they form their bond and fight the syndicate. Who are relentless in their pursuit of our 3 mismatched friends. Pick this up and read it, you won't regret it!

Snarky and fun but some parts made no sense. ‘Discoveries’ kept happening that had already been revealed. Definitely some editing needed for the timeline

This is the second book in the series, and I loved this one more than the first. Brooklyn is such a kick-butt characters, an almost emotionless fighter but she still cares so much for her family. In this latest, the Syndicate is still after her, but they still have their prisoner to find out why they want Brooklyn so bad. I just love Alice and Dominic as a foil for Brooklyn, and they are just so funny together. We find out many secrets in this one, and the end had me ready for more. Great characters and an interesting plot, this is a good urban fantasy for those who like that genre. Highly recommend.

Holy Moly was this an exciting read! After all the revelations in the previous book, I thought I had it all figured out. I couldn't have been more wrong! The way the author hypnotised me, or rather it felt as though I was under her spell, with all the new twists, all the new truths coming out, I was unable to move, I was unable to do anything but consume the rest of the book as if I was parched, lapping up every single drop.

Narrowly escaping the Council, the unlikely trio form the most gorgeous bond. I loved the lighthearted banter amidst the seriousness of their situation, especially from Alice, who has put her fear aside, well sort of, she still has moments and is becoming a force to be dealt with. Whilst she surprised herself, Brooklyn and Dominic, she had me floored! The underlying tone of humour is really great, not a comedy, just lots of awesome snark which shy, very human Alice is excelling at. But here's the thing, humans shouldn't be able to do the things Alice does, should they? Well, what can I say but that it gets even more exciting! Battles and action galore, secrets crawling out of the woodwork, and the sweetest romance too!

Oh my is Brooklyn awesome! Dealing with everything thrown her way is easy for her, but she's completely out of her depth where Dominic is concerned. The tension between them is so thick, I swear even a razor sharp knife couldn't cut it. Not only the romantic tension but the ingrained mistrust and dislike of each other, mortal enemies for, well, forever. I loved seeing how these walls start crumbling, yes, to both the romantic and dislike aspect. Really engaging, really immersive, to the point I, like Alice, wanted to shout out loud, "oh stop being so stubborn!"

The ending was a cliffhanger of note, took me totally by surprise, but that's what a cliffhanger does, isn't it? So much more to look forward to in book 3! As the pieces slide together, clicking into place one by one, the full picture develops. There are still a few strategic gaps left but at the pace each spot is filled, the way it's filled, promises to leave me with a sense of accomplishment, as though I had a hand in completing the puzzle.

This book was so action packed my phone was smoking!! I don't even know where to start. They are still hiding from the Syndicate. When the Syndicate finds Alice's house, Brooklyn, Dominic and Alice are running for their lives. Everyone thinks Alice is just a human but what comes out in this book puts that assumption to rest. She is way more than human and something that is very important to this story. So much comes out in this book and the growth of the charters is awesome!!

Brooklyn and Dominic steam up the pages and still fight like cats and dogs. But there is trust between them and something more which you will find out in the book. Brooklyn finds out what really happened to her father and who her mother is. That blew me away I was not expecting this. And when all is said and done Brooklyn will have more power than anyone could imagine. I don't know how to express how good this book is. The author upped the game with this book and It fantastic!!!

My Kindle broke and I had to read it on my phone. I had a terrible headache from reading such small font, but no way I was going to stop reading. That is how good this book is!!!!

The ending I'll tell you right now made me cry. I was so upset with the ending, but this Author always has a reason for what she does. So I hope she writes really fast, I need the next book now!!!!

Excellent sequel

Maya Daniels has created a set of characters that I personally love. The world building isn’t a stretch to believe since it is based close to Chicago.
I absolutely love that the “bloodsuckers” in this series are Not vampires they are Arya. This is not a spoiler if you read the first one and if you didn’t, you missed out so go grab it.
Brooklyn, Dominic and Alice are in more than one world’s worth of trouble and the creative way they get through so much of it kept me on the edge of my chair and poised for action.
This is definitely a series worthy of rereading so fill those shelves. I did.
Now for the part many of you look for.. language is mild and I would rate it at PG so go ahead and leave it in plain view, there is nothing to cause you to grope towards your pearls.

I’m so freaking confused? Like what is happening with the writing? Some places I felt like I was reading babbling because I was so confused about what was happening?
Also, in the first book she couldn’t take her necklace off because it was bonded or whatever than all of a sudden she just pops it off at the table and hands it over to Alice ? What? When was she able to take it off? Why she keep wearing it if in the first book she said all she wanted was to take it off to have her freedom?? This book is confusing and I’m completely disappointed

Brooklyn, Alice, and Dominic are back in the second book of the series and it picks up where one left off! Still, on the run from the Council and Guardians, they still have Jonathan to interrogate! They are still trying to figure out how Alice performed the rituals she did and successfully~ She is definitely human…but what else could she be hiding? As they continue to fight for answers and to stay alive, many deep secrets shall be uncovered…ones that were not meant for Brooklyn to discover! She will find out more about herself, her lineage, and just how special she is. Only, what will it cost in the end to fulfill? She has learned to rely upon herself, Alice, and Dominic…why should she start trusting others at this point…related or not? Another harrowing adventure on their journey to the full truth will leave you hollering at Maya for the ending in this one!

Oh that ending!

Lower World is the second book in the series. I thought It was entertaining and quite good. I may have liked it more than the first one.
We get plenty of action, drama, and a hint of romance in the mix

I loved the relationship these three have formed and their banter made me laugh. Alice might be my favorite character; she brought great comedic relief.

The book does end on a cliffhanger but not one that gave me anxiety but one that left me wanting more.

Brooklyn is on the run from the Syndicate with an odd collection of friends. This book was one surprise and revelation after another. Everything Brooklyn thought was true has come into question. Who can she trust and what will happen when the truth comes out?

Right.... so.... this was kind of a dumpster fire.

For starters, most of the dialogue felt choppy and robotic. Sometimes we would just randomly stop using contractions. There were also quite a few grammatical errors and typos that made some of the sections difficult to follow. The biggest issue though was that some of the plot points totally contradicted stuff that happened in the first book. Like why did we have such a dramatic Moment when the FMC used her powers on Alice in the beginning?? The MMC already knew she could do that but everyone reacted as if this was some new groundbreaking thing. And then the FMC kept acting like she didn't know who Dominic's inside man was, even though SHE told us who it was in the first book??? Like she literally relived the memory in her dream and still acted all confused later when he had insider knowledge. AND. A N D. Alice's entire personality is based on her trauma from the cages. She talks about it all. the. time. Like all the time. She's not subtle about it. So WHY did we have a scene in this book where the MMC "connected the dots" that she'd been to the cages before?? She literally told him about it in the first book!! And now we're pretending that didn't happen??? Same thing with the council apparently killing her father like I really did not think that was supposed to come as a surprise.

The writing was also really dramatic, but notttt really in a good way. There were so many monologues about the FMC seeing herself as a monster and the people around her trying to tell her she's not and like... it got so old so quickly. The FMC was reallyyyy getting on my nervessss between that whole self hatred thing and the "I can't date Dominic thing" because "he's too broken" girl what???? This whole interaction and the cringey "we're all broken" monologue was too much for me to handle. Ughhh and "the bitch just won't die" monologue?? Cringe. Like. It was just way too overdramatic. "The bitch just wont die. So, they used her, and instead, they killed everything and everyone she cared about. She will be their weapon, under their thumb, or she'll be nothing at all. They'll destroy countries to get to her." Like......... are we being fr rn........ first of all, they killed 2 person. her friend. she didn't even know her dad. so. the whole "everyone she cared about" really honestly wasn't that much. In terms of her being their weapon like...... they made her an assassin...... ok....... but they didn't take advantage of anything else about her??? They apparently didn't even know about her extra powers??? And in terms of destroying countries like dude she ran away a long ass time ago and they haven't even been able to catch her. They destroyed a house. And like a barn or something. If you're gonna be THIS dramatic about how powerful the council is, you need to back it up with actions!!

There were also MULTIPLE instances of her saying that her "heart jumped to the roof of her mouth and stuck there." I still do not understand what this is supposed to mean. I've never felt my heart beat in the roof of my mouth. I'm having a hard time thinking that's just a me-thing. I guess it's supposed to be a play on the heart in your throat thing??? Like yes I understand the author is trying to say that she's anxious but wtf why the roof of her mouth???

Also that ending???? So stupid. I'm sorry. So stupid.

I still love Alice, but that was just about the only plus here.

Lower World: Book 2

3 Stars

This is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy. It held my attention throughout. I loved world building, interesting characters, and the cool universe. This book continues where book 1 left off. I enjoyed watching our trio working together to fight the big bad.

I almost DNF in the first book due to the author's repeated misspelling of the name Isaiah. I'm disappointed it wasn't corrected in books 1-3.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this series (until it's complete). I don't like supporting authors that use cliffhangers to draw an audience. It upsets me and ruins the reading experience. The first book, Black Hand, is a solid read, but the writing declines in book 2, and book 3 is a waste of time. (Think about the movie Matrix with Keanu Reeves. I wish I had stopped with book 1and am not interested in book 4)

No consistency

First, this series needs series editing. The wrong word is used frequently, and tenses switched. Second, we relive things that were revealed in book 1 as if they are brand new in book 2. It makes no sense and it feels like the author didn't know where they left the story. Third, we spend too much time in the FMC's head. Her work is me attitude grates after a while, and her extreme need to protect everyone makes leaves her one dimensional. Fourth, the plot is pretty basic and barely moves forward. Basically running around, fighting, hiding, and then starting the cycle over. From beginning to end, almost nothing changes in this book.

Will not be reading book 3.

I’m finding it very difficult reviewing this book only because I loved ALL OF IT.
If I thought the first in the series was amazing this second book was stupendous.
Watching the characters and the story develop is like watching a flower bloom in fast action video.
I have to confess I couldn’t have predicted how the storyline would have gone. But that’s a good thing.
If you know what’s going to happen, where’s the fun in that.
So well written. Maya is an exceptional writer and , I know it a well worn cliche, but I was literally glued to my seat.
For the record, I haven’t forgiven Maya yet for the ending but rest assured I WILL be reading the next in the series, very soon.
100% guaranteed from me.

Book 2 should be part of Book 1 with some editing.
Beyond that the main characters:
Alice, to me, became a character to dislike.
Dominic's repetitive threats got old quickly.
Brooklyn's inability to stay 'standing', her acceptance of letting someone kill her (I haven't given anything away, you'll see what I mean if you chose to read book 2). She was not the hero that I expect after book 1. Lastly the romance dynamic felt strained and misused, no real chemistry existed.
Ps. I will be reading book 3, the last chapter in book 2 drew me back in. With that said wish me good luck because I'm hoping book 2 was just a rough patch for the author.

This is the first series written by Maya Daniels I have read (well, the first two books) and it's safe to say I will not be returning to her. I actually like the overall idea, but weak development of characters, some parts were more like a high school kid wrote them and worst of all - two books I read are more like two thirds of a whole that should be one book. This felt like two episodes of TV series, so perhaps Maya Daniels should take a page from Ilona Andrews or Sarah J Maas book on how to have a story in one book that is part of a series. It may sound harsh, but I was disappointed and wished somebody wrote this so I skip it.

DNF 17%

Who edited this??? How on earth did they miss the glaringly obvious inconsistencies from book 1? Dominic already knew about her compulsion; she'd used it on him. They also had a lengthy talk about it not working on Johnathan due to him having an amulet of her blood and Dominic being able to break the compulsion on himself because she has his blood in her system. And yet, this book starts as if the majority of the 1st book never happened. This is sloppy and honestly crap. If you take so long to write these super short books that you forget what you wrote, reread it!!

This is such a great series!!
Brooklyn, Alice and Dominic are in hiding from The Syndicate but its not long before trouble finds the trio. In a game of outwit or die, they must work together and trust in each other to be able to make it through the attacks. Truths are discovered, the past revealed, a prophecy learnt, and a friend not as they seem - its action packed, laugh out loud funny and will have to itching for more!!

Awesome surprises!

What surprises we got with this book! Alice isn’t just the human crazy dog lady we thought she was. She’s doing some amazing things here. And Dominic? Let’s just say things could definitely get steamy between Brooklyn and him.
But there are mind bending surprises in store for them once the Council mansion is revisited.
I’m looking forward to book three!

Lower World, the second book of the Infernal Regions for the Unprepared series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). Twists and Turns could be described as the main draw of book two. The pace and the tension was non-stop, not to mention the chemistry between Brooklyn and Dominic. Off to book three...

Dense female lead

Interesting but the fmc seems to forget she has abilities to assist in getting her and her clan out of trouble. Secrecy is now "too late she cried" as the knowledge has been let loose. Makes the story stretch and more interesting I guess but surely would have more impact if left to unveil further on in the series. I did enjoy the other reveals however!

Get to the Point already

Still no movement on getting to the shifters. Honestly, the entire book is the same stuff most of the first book was. Filler. Until the bombshell at the very end. Not that it moves the story along at all because it doesn’t. It just adds more chaos to the story.

Too many plot errors to enjoy

This could’ve been a cute story, but they were way too many plot errors for me to continue reading. Inconsistencies with him not knowing about her ability to control with her and the fact that she had told him she had been in the cages in the first book where he replied suspiciously “no one escapes from the cages” just to name a couple.
