Season of the Witch #1

Lifestyles of the Witch and Ageless

Rate this book
A paranormal women’s fiction cozy mystery – because midlife can be a real witch!

There are a lot of things people never told you about being forty-something. Sure, they mentioned the hot flashes and reading glasses and the need for Kegels, but they never talked about fireballs sprouting from your fingertips or your sudden ability to turn rat-bastards into, well, actual rats.

Which is why it comes as something of a surprise to Juniper when—at the tender age of 46—she discovers that not only has she inherited a quirky house in an even quirkier town called Miracle Bay from a relation she had no idea existed, but she also develops magical powers. Because, apparently, she’s a witch. Something her parents sort of forgot to tell her.

With her life turned upside down, a new start in a new town is just what Juniper needs, and the strange bookstore her grandmother left her might be exactly the right opportunity. But beyond her inheritance and sudden affinity for tarot cards, there’s something strange afoot in Miracle Bay. A mystery Juniper is determined to solve before her newfound freedom vanishes along with her life.

A brand new paranormal women's fiction series from the best selling author of Lady Rample Mysteries and Sunwalker Saga.
Get ready for some midlife magic!

Shéa MacLeod has dreamed of writing novels since before she could hold a crayon. She totally blames her mother.

Her favorite poem as a child was ‘Jabberwocky’, and Her favorite authors were Agatha Christie and Edgar Allan Poe. Which probably explains a lot.

After a six year sojourn in London, England, a dearth of good donuts has driven her back to her hometown. She now resides in the leafy green hills outside Portland, Oregon where she indulges in her fondness for strong coffee, Ancient Aliens reruns, lemon curd, and dragons.

Because everything's better with dragons.

Shéa is the author of the SUNWALKER SAGA (a fast paced urban fantasy series with a kick-ass heroine published by Montlake) and DRAGON WARS (a post-apocalyptic series with dragons)as well as the Cupcake Goddess novelettes.

As she turned forty-six, Juniper Jones’ life changed in unimaginable ways. JJ as her friends called her, lost her job and was evicted from her rental, all after she’d been dumped by her boyfriend. Then she received a letter from a firm of solicitors which advised her she’d inherited property and money after her grandmother died, from where she’d lived in a little coastal town called Miracle Bay. Packing up all she owned, JJ headed to Miracle Bay, following the directions from the solicitor. It wasn’t showing on any maps, or GPS so without the directions, she would have missed it.

The strange inhabitants of Miracle Bay, her grandmother’s bookshop and home above it, the weird happenings and a familiar named Enki. Then there was a death – the body of a woman JJ had met the day before. When JJ was told she was a witch, of course she didn’t believe it. There was no such thing as magic – was there?

Lifestyles of the Witch and Ageless is the 1st in the Season of the Witch series by Shea McLeod and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Laugh out loud moments filled the book – so much fun and very entertaining. This is my first by this author and it won’t be my last! Highly recommended to fans of paranormal cosies!

I am not usually a reader of cozy mysteries or witchy books, so I went into this with low expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Our main character, Juniper, is 46 years old and having a heck of a rough time in life when she discovers that she comes from a magical family. Juniper is funny, and I loved reading about the zany characters in her new hometown. This one ends on a cliffhanger, so I'll definitely have to check out the next book.

I found this story both entertaining and humorous. Juniper has just turned 46, lost her boyfriend, her job and opens a letter containing an eviction notice. Then she receives another letter, this one confirming her appointment with a law firm specializing in estate matters. Out of curiosity and with nothing else to do, Juniper decides to keep the appointment. Turns out the Grandmother she thought died years ago has only recently passed away and has made Juniper the heir to her estate in Miracle Bay. The story from there becomes a fun, magical, mysterious story with a lot of wonderful quirky characters and a cliffhanger for an ending. I look forward to more books in this series. I thank Cozy Mystery Book Club for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This was fun! A very short but entertaining book about a woman who wakes up on her 46th birthday to discover she suddenly has magic. Chaos ensues and she ends up in Miracle Bay where she gets caught up in a murder investigation. I found the story engaging, although I think a little too much happened in the less than 200 page-long book. However, I really wanna read on to figure out what happened to JJ's grandmother now!

So much fun! I'm guilty of loving all things book/cat/witch and this has all three. Throw in the midlife heroine and a magical town and I'm in. With a reluctant heroine and a fun cast, I raced through it and immediately bought the second book.

Hűha! Ezt nagyon élveztem. Pont erre volt szükségem. Egy boszis jópofa történet ami egy varázslatos kisvárosban játszódik. Volt itt minden kérem. Örökség, kalamajka, mágikus lények, beszélő macska, gyilkosságok (jól olvastad, többes szamba) és még szellemek is. Egyetlen panaszom? Túl rövid volt. Alig várom hogy a többi részt is megkaparintsam. 5/5⭐️

Wow! I really enjoyed this. This is exactly what I needed. A cozy little mystery that takes place in a magical small town. We had everything. An odd inheritance, magical creatures, talking cats, murders (you read that right, murders in plural) and even ghosts. My only complaint? It was too short. I can't wait to read the sequels. 5/5⭐️

This was a nice, easy and quick read if you need to unwind after a stressful day at work. However I do think a few loose ends could have been tied up within this first book such as what type of witch Juniper actually is rather then spending a majority of the book in complete denial that she is a witch altogether.

There were a few questions left unanswered that I feel could have been wrapped up within this book. I understand the author wanting to draw us in for the second book in the series but the cliffhanger at the end really secures that so I think leaving all the question unanswered was a bit unnecessary and leaving the reader wanting.

I am also not sure of the role of some of the characters and hope that some of them play a larger role later in the series because right now both of the main characters parents could be dead vs. just her father and it wouldn’t have made a difference in the story line in the slightest.

I gave this three stars because I did enjoy the overall concept of the story and the world within the book. I just hope things are wrapped up a little more within each book throughout the series.

On the plus side, this was a light-hearted, enjoyable PWF cozy paranormal mystery with a main character in her mid-forties who actually ACTED like she was in her mid-forties, rather than mid-seventies.

Also on the plus side, it's fun watching Juniper develop friendships with the quirky residents of Miracle Bay, and I will never NOT love snarky talking cat characters.

On the neutral side, there's perhaps a hint of a slow-burn romance in there too, but it's very much in the background where it will... at a guess... develop over subsequent books.

That brings me to the negative side. You could be forgiven for thinking that writing in the PWF genre means a/ having a main character whose life has completely fallen apart - she has no friends, she's involuntarily single (often because her ex cheated or just traded her in for a younger model), and she hates her job - and b/ that she's surprise!inherited some kind of magical shop/inn/B&B/property, which ends up saving her from her crappy life and giving her something new to live for.

Yes, there are PWF authors who haven't used either of these tropes. Elizabeth Hunter's six leads from the Moonstone Cove and Glimmer Lake books have great, fulfilling lives on at least some levels before they get their powers. And while Deborah Wilde's Miri Feldman is divorced, she and her ex have a mostly-amicable relationship, and she doesn't need her powers to 'rescue her from her life'.

But I think this is the fourth PWF book I've read now that's used exactly the same tropes (and I think there are a couple in my Kindle library that I grabbed when they were released because they were cheap that also use it). This is... one of the better written of the four, but it would have been nice to see something a little different.

I'll probably go on to read Book 2 in this series because a/ I'm really curious about the second mystery that's set up at the end of the book, and b/ I'm also curious to see whether the romance that's maybe hinted at does eventuate (plus, c/ let's face it: I just want to hang out more with Enki)

Between a 3 and 4 for this one. Went with a 3 because I found it too predictable. This was very easy to read, however. A mystery gets solved in the end. The ending can lead a reader to want more of the series as it does unravel the start of a new mystery, plus the main character hasn't fully fleshed out her powers as of yet. Good for what it is but nothing extraordinary.

This was a great paranormal cozy murder mystery with very quirky and likeable characters. Juniper Jones celebrates her 46th birthday by having her coffee pot explode, getting fired from her library job and turning her cheating boyfriend, who took her to lunch for her birthday to dump her, into a toad! Did she really do that? Then she gets summoned to a lawyer's office to be told her grandmother, who she thought died years age, that she inherited some property - a book store and the building it is housed in. Since she was told she can't sell the business or house, she figures she will find someone to run it for her so she doesn't have to stay in this town called Miracle Bay. When she gets there, she finds she can talk to and understand a black cat that is her familiar. But she doesn't believe in magic. She can also see ghosts and when two of the nasty residents are murdered, she finds herself looking for the cause at the same time she finds she is coming into her magic powers. What a way to spend your 46th year! Will she stay in this strange town? People with wings? What's up with that? Magic...really. This is a fun and fast paced read that keeps you turning pages and laughing at times. I received a copy of this book but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.

I greatly enjoyed this story, which revolves around Juniper, a woman who is facing her 46th birthday, having recently been fired by a horrific boss, whom she accidentally turned into a frog. Of course she doesn't believe she did that, although the boss disappeared from behind the desk and a frog appeared. Obviously midlife was messing with her brain and she had missed a few moments of time. After all, she just found herself jobless, poor, with bills screaming to be paid, and her life was passing before her eyes.

Just when she thinks she's completely lost what marbles she has left, she is sent on what she sees as a goose chase, driving to a place that's not on any map, at the bequest of her grandmother whom she had been told had died decades ago, but in reality had just passed in the place she was now driving towards.

What she finds there is more than her heritage and a huge mystery that has people looking at her sideways. After all, this is a small town that most people don't even know exists, and she's shown up just when two bodies are found, both of them by her.

Juniper is a very likeable character, as is her cat, who appears to be able to talk. She really is losing her marbles.

Entertaining

Meeting Between Bread. Most of you should know me pretty well. I no longer accept very many friends because I feel it’s not for me. And of late not a fan of the platform. Almost every FB friend I have known on some level, you are not just a number. But if you are still on my FB, it’s because we have some connection. I would love to see if we can still chat more than just likes... I decided to participate in an experience called “Meeting between Bread”. The idea is to see who reads a post without a photo. We are so consumed with technology that we forget the most important thing: good friendship. If no one is reading this message, it will be a short social experiment. But if you finish this till the end, I would love you to comment in ONE WORD about us. For example, a place, an object, a person, a moment in which you remember us. Then copy this post and post it on your page (don’t share) and I’ll go to your page and leave a word that reminds me of you. Please don’t comment if you don’t have time to copy the text. This will destroy the experiment. Let’s see who spent their time to read and respond according to the common story. Memories.

*I received a free copy of this book through the Paranormal Women’s Fiction Book Club on Facebook*

A very cute story about a newly-turned 46-year old child free single woman who gets a surprise inheritance involving family she believed long dead. With this inheritance comes a trip to a new town and interactions with all the different inhabitants she meets there.

This is more of a novella than a book, so the pacing is quick and the author takes for granted that the reader is going to either know a few things about the occult (or overlook a few errors for the sake of cute) and suspend disbelief well to jump to conclusions altogether now to reach the finish line. The villa of Miracle Bay is constantly in motion and I’m not sure if that’s to distract from the thin plot of the first story or to open the possibility for many new avenues to explore, but the denouement is lackluster while simultaneously promoting more to come. I enjoyed myself at first, but didn’t find myself intrigued enough to want to find out more in continuing installments.

A delightful cozy mystery...paranormal though the protagonist didn't know it till she turned 46 (apparently women in her paternal line come into their witchy powers at that age...something about menopause!). It is the first in a series, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Juniper's day started with an exploding coffee pot then she was fired from her job and learned she was being evicted from her apartment. The good news was that she found out she had inherited a house, business and bank account from a grandmother she thought had died before Juniper was born.

To claim her inheritance Juniper must go to a mysterious town on Oregon's coast. In the meantime she solves a murder or two. Oh yes, she has a familiar who is a black cat that talks!

A town full of magical folks....

....and our protagonist Juniper Jones, or JJ as she prefers to be called, has arrived here after the death of her grandmother whom she thought died many years ago. Grandmother Agnes Jones has left JJ a bookstore and a house, but JJ isn't sure she wants to.move from Portland OR. Soon JJ is immersed in all kinds of weirdness and even a murder.

This is an amusing story that is well written and easy to read. The main story is complete but there is a tag at the very end that leads to the next book. JJ and the residents of Magic Bay are fun and interesting. There is no bad language or other adult goings on so this is a family friendly story. It's a good start to what promises to be an interesting series.

What a fun book. I love Juniper and cheered for her from the opening of the story, when her awful boss ordered her to pick up coffee and donuts before coming into work. And then fired her. I loved the unfolding of Juniper’s midlife magic after she discovers she’s been left an inheritance by her late Grandmother – a woman she’d always thought was dead. Juniper heads to Miracle Bay, accepts her inheritance, and steps into her new life as a midwitch. The story is filled with magic, mystery, and murder all set in a charming, magical village by the ocean. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

On Juniper Jones' 46th birthday, her life slowly falls apart. Luckily she gets a notice of an inheritance from a grandmother that she had thought had been long dead. Required to visit Miracle Bay, Juniper finds a ready made home, job and community if she chooses to stay. Unfortunately she also finds a dead body and must help solve the crime to determine what happened.

Love that Juniper is the type of witch to get her powers from menopause. Seems like there should be a positive there. Miracle Bay is full of fun characters and the writing is fine enough. It may be fun to continue the series and see what happens next.

I have been reading quite a lot of fiction about witches and other creatures, we as humans are convinced don't exist. I certainly wish magic were real and all those creatures were as well, but if it all was real, I would still be a mundane, not a lick of magic in me, sorry to say. My point is this was a very fun read. The main characters are quite believable, fun to read about, and they have become quite endearing, quickly. The plot is easily followed and the story is a good one. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who believes in magic.

Delightful first book in a series. It is Juniper Jones 46th birthday and it is not going well. Her coffee pot blew up, she was late for work , her boyfriend broke up with her at her birthday lunch (she may have turned him into a frog) and she loses her job.
Then she receives a letter with an appointment to see a lawyer the next day.
When she arrives she finds that she has an inheritance including a business.

When she arrives in the small town she discovers everyone is just a little different.

When a murder occurs and she finds the body she feels she must try to solve it herself

Juniper or JJ as she likes to be called is having a really bad birthday! She discovers she’s had a grandma she thought died decades ago. She’s forced to go to a town down the coast to collect her inheritance. It turns out to be more than she expected. Within 2 days of arriving in the weird new town she discovers 2 dead bodies and learns she’s a witch and comes from a long line of witches!
I enjoyed this book. It was new and refreshing! I liked watching JJ trying to figure out which type of which she is and what she’s capable of! I recommend this fun exciting book!

Fun read

Great story if a little quirky with wonderful characters who come to life on the page. Plenty of magic lots of humor and even the possibility of a little romance. Looking for a new start when her life goes pear-shaped and thanks to a timely inheritance from a grandmother she thought had died years ago our heroine with the help of her snarky cat familiar, yep she's a witch that's the other thing that came with her 46th birthday sets out to put her life back on track, No Chance surrounded by murder and mayhem things are going to get crazy real fast. Great read Baz.

There’s not too many good things going on in Juniper’s life. And strange things have been happening around her. But then she finds out she has inherited a bookstore from a relative she didn’t know. She heads to the new town. She finds the town and her new house and bookstore. The other people who live in town are interesting. The town itself has an air of magic. Something is going on and Juniper finds herself closely involved more than once. This was a great cozy mystery with lots of humor as Juniper starts to really believe that she does have magical abilities.

4.5 stars~

I honestly went into this with not super high expectations since I got this on a stuff your kindle day for free. However I was very pleasantly surprised. I loved seeing the town and meeting the residents and all the side characters were wonderful. I think it could have been even better if there were like 50 more pages, and there were some points where the phrasing used turned me off a tiny bit- but for the most part I really enjoyed this story. I’m definitely excited to check out more books by this author!

Got this one for free on Google Play. Although it reads very, very easy, it is quite boring. The main character is a middle aged woman who is finding out she is a witch. By having her character trying to deny or ignore she's a witch and doing lots of descriptions of a magic town, house, person, etc the author tries to make this a believable story (see Harry Potter). Unfortunately, it has just the opposite effect on me. I find it boring, full of cliches and uninteresting. Definitely (very) young adult.

NOT to be continued.

What an enjoyable book. Our heroine has her 46th birthday. That morning her coffee pot explodes, at an expensive lunch date, her boyfriend breaks up with her, and then he turns into a frog. When she gets back to work, she is fired. Then she finds an eviction notice at her apartment. What a crappy. Birthday! Than a letter from a lawyer arrives saying her grandmother, who she beloved died y50 years ago has died and left her a business. But there are cat he’s of course. Funny tale?

Great New Series!

I really enjoyed this book and beginning of this series! I'm new to this author, but I've been dying to read this series since it released. I'm a big fan of the PWF genre and this was a super addition to it. It had a few slower spots, but honestly, it had great humor and I loved getting to know The new town and it's residents!! Can't want to move to the next one!❤

Really, more like 3.5 due to great editing and smart writing 👍🏼

Fairly familiar, at this point, midlife-witch-coming-into-power story, but with a relatively smart protagonist - not so smart to be intimidating, but no dummy either - and a nice, simple cozy-mystery hook to get her where she needed to be. Enjoyable way to spend a bit of money and a couple of hours 😊. Looking forward to the next one.

This was a great find. Approaching middle age, jobless, homeless and almost friendless, JJ is thrown an unexpected lifeline and begins a very different life. She’s a fan of murder mysteries and then finds herself in the middle of one.
Interesting characters and sassy dialogue, especially between JJ and her familiar. There is so much for her to learn and it’s going to be a great ride. Book two here I come!
