Heirs of Cornwall #2

The Viscount's Heir

Rate this book
The Viscount’s Heir: Book 2 of the Heirs of Cornwall Series tells the tale of two stubborn personalities determined to escape the matrimonial trap.

Allayne Carlyle, the only son and heir of Viscount Rose, is in a conundrum. All his friends are happily married, and his mother has decided it is time for him to do the same deed. But Allayne has no intentions of entering the parson's mousetrap. He is wealthy, handsome, and free. The world is at his fingertips. He is not done sowing his wild oats, and frankly, he wants to keep sowing said oats for the next decade. Or two. Why would he want to get leg-shackled, when there are too many alluring widows to bed, and even more beautiful actresses to pursue?

Lady Alexandra Davenport, the only daughter of the Earl of Weston, is in a similar predicament. She has been cleverly avoiding the matrimonial trap, but now that her twenty-fifth birthday has come around, her father has finally put his foot down. He had threatened to confiscate her most treasured possessions: her horse and her pistols if she does not come around and accept one of her many suitors. But Alexandra is in no haste to get betrothed. She would rather spend her days participating in her charities, practicing her shooting and fencing skills, and if truth be told, she could not bear to leave her father and live elsewhere with a husband she doesn't truly adore. Why would she want to marry some wretched man who would take her money, when she is happy and content where she is at?

Unbeknownst to our hero and heroine, their parents have been scheming. What will happen when these two stubborn personalities collide? Will they chase each other with a hatchet, or will the sparks fly?

Join Allayne and Alexandra, as they conquer the mystery of that little word, they have been trying their best to avoid: Love.

Fun, lighthearted for the most part, but heavier later in the book.
In essence a mixture that keeps you turning pages and definitely is entertaining.

Our two main characters are being encouraged to marry, much against their will, but both seem to have different ideas of how their lives should play out.
One is a womaniser who wants to keep sowing his oats while he can.
The other is a bit of a Hellion who is determined to keep her pistols and Foils no matter the cost.
Their parents have different plans.

Laughter, tears and a satisfying book await you.
A really enjoyable read.

Full of humor, mistaken identities (disguised more like it), adventure and a long journey to happiness, fills this story to the end.

He is being pushed by his mother to make a match and marry. He's three and thirty and it is time. Unfortunately he just wants to continue is easy life and liaisons and not have to bend to a wife.
She is use to doing what she wants, more like a tomboy with her guns and horses, doing as she pleases, but her father has other ideas.

When these two unexpectedly meet, both disguised as servants, tere is not telling what will happen! Let the games begin!

Lighthearted and entertaining, this comedy of errors evolves into a tragedy when two stubborn people think to thwart their parents' plans. Swapping identities with their personal servants results in a love affair between Allayne Carlyle and Alexandra Davenport, not realising that they have in fact played right into their elders' hands. When the results of their affair become apparent, Alexandra takes the only course open to her. However, after a lapse of time, she once more comes face to face with Allayne and can no longer hide the truth. I found this novel romantic and sad in parts, although it does comes to a happy conclusion. This romantic comedy is a standalone and comes to a happy conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

This is the second book in the series, a well written book with plenty of humour and two people falling in love but of course deceptions, misunderstandings & secrets all play a big part & things don’t go according to plan. The first part is a very entertaining romp, almost a farce but then things turn more serious& time passes until the pair are reunited. I found the book to be an enjoyable read with a good mix of humour, romance as well as having its darker sadder moments. I loved both Allayne & Alexandra whose road to a HEA was long & strewn with obstacles, if only they’d been honest with each other then it would have saved a lot of heartache. I also loved Diana who was priceless & Marion who totally deserves her HEA
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Allayne Carlyle always trying to avoid his mother's matchmaking ideas.  She has coerced him into going to a house party where he will not know anyone. He will soon foil her plans for him.  Our light-hearted hero may soon regret his spontaneous idea.

Lady Alexandra Davenport is happy as a spinster.  Her life in the country with her hobbies and her father suit her fine.  Her father however is blackmailing her into accepting that she will marry, or else!! Our heroine is looking for a harmless adventure.

This is a very funny historical romance, full of crazy characters.  A prank that starts innocently could prove life changing.  The story takes quite a few twists and turns.

Really great fun.

A special request to our author,

Please can we have Diana Radcliffe's story when she gets older.  What a great little girl.

So much emotion in this second book of “The Heirs of Cornwall” — it’s true what they say, “The Bigger the Rogue the harder he falls” Alaayne Carlyle falls hard. Of course it can’t be a straight forward HEA, no this story takes you through the twists and turns of false identities, family obligations, unplanned consequences of a passionate love, miscommunication, and misunderstandings. Never fear there is a happy ending but first the story tramples all over your heart. This story has some very sexy moments as Alaayne explores his hedonistic nature…🔥🔥🔥

It was nice seeing characters from book one and watching their families grow. You also get your first glimpse of Diana and Edward who will take you on an emotional ride in book 3 of the series.

Overall 4 Stars | 4 Flames

I recommend this series if you love stories full of UST and FEELZ that eventually come to a HEA!!

The Viscount's Heir by Veronica Crowe was a pleasure to read. She used a totally different plot, one I've not read before, and made it a question all along the read. Allayne Carlyle was to be the Viscount Rose some day in the future. Until then he was enjoying his life as a rake, except when he was avoiding his mother's matchmaking attempts. It was not easy; she was skillful. He was two and thirty and he's avoided so far, but it was tiring. Lady Alexandra Davenport was the daughter of the Earl of Weston and at five and twenty was considered past her prime. The problem was her father didn't see it that way. He wanted her married. He and several of his cronies had gotten together and found a perfect way to be certain the two would meet: Lady Penelope's house party. Neither was happy to be included in a house party where the next youngest guest was twice their age. As they were arriving, both had the same ingenious idea: switch places with their personal servants, a maid and a valet. The clothing exchange was not totally successful but it had worked. Here's the problem: the new valet and the new maid fell in love, as deed their "master and mistress." From there it was a comedy of errors. Some were funny, others were tragic.

This is a clever plot with endearing characters who did as they were expected. After trying to drink himself into oblivion, Allayne left for America to work with his father's interests there. He was good at it...very successful. After several years he began to notice the daughter of one of his colleagues. She reminded him of Anna (Alexandra) but he didn't admit that to himself. He eventually proposed to her and determined it was time to return to England, he being the dutiful son and all. His mother would be so happy. Alexandra had a tougher row to hoe, eventually marrying a duke much older than she. Both believed the other was totally out of their reaches, never realizing the mix-up. This was an extremely entertaining story full of characters readers have met previously and new ones that were lively and entertaining. Some of the exchanges between "the maid and the valet" were laugh-out-loud funny. Enchanting, endearing. Not enough adjectives. This book struck me. I loved it.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Viscount's Heir by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #theviscountsheir

What a perfect read!!
This book right here was AWESOME, i loved every second of it, it was so fast paced and kept me on my toes throughout it, every single chapter was important and filled to the brim of well written scenes, my most favorite ones were lady Diana's scene with her father and Jeremy, it was lighthearted and so fun to read, and my second one was the reunion scene between Alexandra and Allyne, it was filled with tension and you could feel their anguish and despair.
The plot was immaculate, from their bizarre idea of exchanging their identities with their help, to the intense love story, then the departure of their love, to many more details.
The author is a GENIUS, the writing was so good, she knew how to deliver every climax scene, she managed to keep me hooked from the very first chapter.
One of my favorite books this year.

Love Explodes within Soulmates

I chose this rating because it wasn't anything by a wonderful story that all through time human being try to be something they never expect happens. All through the book are very interesting errors made hastily but this ending was a very real how we can mess up terribly and still have a very lovely pair who were meant to be together. When you probably remember the first you look and there were so many awesome feelings that can't be denied. Men and women have fallen in love because it's just a matter of facing it to grow out of this world enjoying life, children ,grandchildren we all go through all that comes against two people that have been together sixty years or more and still the love between them never dies.

Five star read all the way!

This book might have ruined me for historical romances for a while. The story had so much going for it, and so many different situations that you find in romance books, but not all in the same book. Now, the key is that Ms. Crowe PULLS IT ALL OFF!!
Never in the story was I bored, or did it hit that dip. The meet cute situation, between Allayne and Alexandra is too much fun. While reading at one point I was laughing/ screaming at the book and had to walk away because I was so embarrassed for the characters.
A great, fun, summer read that leaves you happy at the end with laughter throughout.

Not really my thing. It starts a bit scapegrace with comic changing of clothes and split breeches. The sex seems a bit knowing an not compatible with Regency England. The hero very iresponsible in his actions knowing it could lead to pregnancy for the heroine. The pernultimate chapter explains a bit more about the various plots going on. The niece seems interesting and very money grabbing. Not sure I'll search out the others in the series.

The first half of this book is a fun romp of mistaken identities, and the second part deals with the complications that may arise a lot later when nobody has had the wherewithal to have one candid conversation to clarify the mistaken identities problem.

Coincidentally, Mr. Allayne Carlyle and Lady Alexandra Davenport are both of an age that their parents wish them married sooner than later. Coincidentally, they both get invited to a house party full of their parents' more elderly friends. Coincidentally, they both arrive escorted only by a maid or valet, and coincidentally, they both decide to switch roles with their servant. None of the other house guests claim to recognize them and they get away with it for a while. Eventually they sleep together and talk about getting married, but coincidentally both forget to mention their real names. Coincidentally this seems like an obstacle to both of them in the cruel light of the morning, and when the houseparty ends they're separated with no hope of finding each other again. Some years later, Alexandra is a widow with a child, and Allayne is planning a marriage to an American woman. You can imagine their shock when they come across each other at an event.

I enjoyed the fast pace and the farcical elements, and the writing flows well. The plot depends on the reader's ability to accept the implausibility of the spur-of-the-moment identity swap (there was absolutely no planning that went into this), the characters' lack of honesty and their disregard of the possible consequences to the female half of their intimate affair. It didn't ruin the story but I would have liked them to have a more serious conversation involving some more groveling from Allayne. (He threatens to shoot people when he is upset, so please don't upset him.) And I wanted to know what happened to the original valet and maid but unless I missed something this was a plot thread that was left hanging.

A minor Americanism: there is a funny scene in which some of the minor characters familiar from the first book involve an eight year old girl in Allayne's sorrows. They talk about reading the Constitution as if that is a thing that exists in Regency England, but in fact the British constitution has still not been codified into a single document and some of it remains unwritten. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constit...

The same publishing nitpick I had with the first book of the series: Amazon says "The Viscount's Heir was formerly published as Heaven Sent The Wrong One by VJ Dunraven and has updated content." I can't find this information anywhere on my copy of the book and the About the Author note at the end of the book implies Veronica Crowe just recently finished writing this book.

I got an advance review copy from Netgalley and I'm leaving a voluntary, honest review.

I really enjoyed The Viscount's Heir! This was the first historical romance novel in a long time that I've laughed out loud. Sometimes even a very unladylike snort was produced.

This is a story of mistaken identities and second chances.

The book begins with Allayne, a Viscount's heir, and Alexandra, a free spirited Earl's daughter, are forced to attend a matchmaking house party by their meddling parents. Neither want to attend, nor do they have any intentions of marrying.

Allayne and Alexandra switch places with their valet and lady's maid, respectively. So when Allayne and Alexandra first meet, as valet Andy and maid Anna, there is a tremendous pressure taken off of them. They are both afforded a freedom they hadn't experienced before.

The first half of the book was absolute joy, full of hilarious antics and watching two people fall madly in love. It was truly swoon-worthy. The tension and love was really palpable.

But of course, neither knows the other's true identity. So when the end of the house party comes, and their own valet and maid actually run off together and fall in love themselves, a series of mistakes and near misses occurs, that have consequences that last for years.

The book then takes a more serious turn, full of heartbreak and tough decisions. Four years go by, and Allayne and Alexandra still don't know the truth of their time in Bath.

Suspend your disbelief, because of course there are some instances where you know mutual friends and family must have talked to each other over the years. The ending was a bit abrupt, but when they meet again, sparks fly. The epilogue was weak. I would have liked to see five to ten years in the future, not literally one hour later (come on, that's not an epilogue, that's just the end of a chapter!)

The secondary characters were all likable, especially young Diana, who basically only appeared in one chapter but may have stolen the entire book!

I can't wait to read the other books in this series and to check out more from this author.

Content warning: cheating (on betrothed).

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given.

I received an ARC and chose to give my honest opinion - thank you NetGalley!

I want to start by saying that I went into this book with huge expectations because I read the synopsis and loved it! Unfortunately, it let me down pretty early on...

Basically Alexandra and Allayne don't want to get married and their respective fathers scheme to send them both to a house party where all the other guests are much older than them. This set up sounds perfect to me! Anyway, it was destroyed right away because they trade identities with their servants.
In the beginning, they do the exact same things. Same ideas, same actions which leads them to a misscomunication loop. For me, what is interesting while reading romance is understanding how two people can put aside their differences and be together and we have none of that here because they look like the same exact person (when it comes to their actions).
The countless twists and changes didn't help, actually I believe it only made me roll my eyes even harder.

The star of the show was definitely Diana (Allayne's niece) who only made an appearance in a single chapter but she was so savy and entertaining! I loved her instantly!

On the whole, I believe this book was so promising and if it had stuck to the initial premise, I would have loved it!

The switch

Anna aka Alex is tired of her parents setting her up and sending her to house parties with old people!? Allayne aka Andrew valet extradonaire. There is a saying a little lie goes a long way. In this case it went on for years! I did not expect this story with all this tests and tangles! You get close to the truth of Anna Banana and Andrew and confusion happens once more! But true love is almost impossible to get over! There is always a residual spark in your heart even you temporarily douse the flames! It is also very difficult and painful to love a man that clearly loves another! My heart broke for the American in this story!
But you cannot make someone love you!
Anna aka Alex was forever running if she had just waited and had an honest conversation with Allayne and he with her so much heartache could have been avoided! I don't think you truly fall out of love but when trust is broken the heart has to move on!
Alex in a way did what was best for her future she didn't know who Allayne was and she had her reputation to protect! Their love and chemistry is so fierce and raw simply scandalous! The hilarious moments in this story equal the ones for a tissue! There is so much steam that it fairly leaps off the pages!! I stayed up way late with this one! I could not put it down!!

4.5 STARS

Loved the banter and antics of the child Diana. The author wrote the scenes so well, I could picture it all playing out.

I'm not a fan of secrets but since they both kept the same secret from each other it didn't bother me as it usually does. What did bother me was the H is a known rake. He makes love to the h and neither think it could result in a child? Plus he had no trouble taken the virginity of the h? Lovemaking, outside of marriage, several times - heat level 5 out of 5.

I did want to know more about the valet and maid. There was a build up how they were both shy and virgins and they made a decision - that seemed so out of character.

The author lead me to the fork in a road and I was positive the fork I knew she would lead me. But, alas, it was no where near what I thought would transpire - made for heartachingly time!

This story offered, suspense, twists aplenty, heart ache, surprises, intrigue, lighthearted banter and antics by the children. No cheating, no cliffhanger, epilogue only 1 hour in the future (is that really an epilogue)?
Some romance and steam - bedroom door wide opened. Many times a word I consider taking the Lord's name in vain was used, but the "g" wasn't capitalized. So not sure, just letting you know. I can't improve on the blurb, so not attempting. (ljb)

This is a quick and quite a fun read! The Viscount's Heir is the second book in the series and follows Alexandra and Allayne through a series of adventures, misadventures, misunderstandings, heartbreak and finally second chances. Confused? Let me explain. Without knowing, Allayne and Alexandra are brought together, but of their own accord they do not reveal to each other who they are. They fall in love but assuming that the other is a servant, each of them leave and finally not knowing who they are, they move on with their live, quite heartbroken.

Alexandra is later forced to take decisions for herself that will help her situation. As time goes by, the two end up in the same place and realize who they are. Though a lot has changed, they realize that their love for one another is still as strong as ever. Perhaps this is their second chance at a life together.

The characters are well thought out and quite entertaining. They bring the story to life and the author has kept it quite realistic. I truly enjoyed reading this book even though the sad parts and I am impressed with the resilience shown by Alexandra. She is truly a motivation and a pillar of strength given her circumstances.

I recommend this book to all those who love romance and would like a quick but emotional read!

Note: I received a copy of the book from NetGalley and am grateful for the opportunity to have read this book!

This book was a treat. My first read by Veronica Crowe and most certainly not my last. The Viscount’s Heir is a mistaken (on purpose) identity, kinda sorta InstaLove, secret baby, second chance, historical romance. There’s a lot going on and it makes for one helluva entertaining read. Alexandra and Allayne meet under interesting circumstances and their attraction to one another is strong and powerful. He’s a first class rake and she’s a smart and competitive female, together they are something out of the ordinary. I enjoyed watching them grow closer and was rooting for them to get their happily ever after. But, things take an interesting turn and their forever takes on interesting twists, making it an unexpected and kindle-clenching journey. Well done Miss Crowe, well done. TBR The Viscount’s Heir and Enjoy.

Allayne Carlyle meets Lady Alexandra Davenport at a house party but neither of them realises that the other is born of wealth. The reason is that they swapped places with their servants in order to avoid being married off. Yet Allayne, the only son of Viscount Rose and Alexandra, the only daughter of the Earl of Weston, soon find their attraction turns into so much more. Yet in hiding their true identities, their lives take an unexpected turn.
Without revealing the plot, this book switches from quite a predictable plot, if unbelievable situation between the couple to an interesting and almost heartbreaking story. Both characters were well developed, and I found that as the book progressed, that they were more complex than they seemed by carrying out the swap. An interesting and enjoyable read.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Forced into attending a house party for the express purpose of meeting each other, Allayne Carlyle and Lady Alexandra Davenport both have the same idea; switch places with their servants so they can avoid their parents' matchmaking schemes! Hijinks and love ensue.

I thought the story was funny and creative, but the writing and some of the dialogue took me out of the story a couple times (especially at the beginning). This book really seemed like it would check all the boxes for me, but even though I wanted to know what happened next, overall it fell a bit flat.

I liked the subplots with the servants and the resolution was heartwarming. I want to read another of Crowe's books to see if I like it better because her plot was fresh and interesting.

Allayne Carlyle, heir of Viscount Rose is in trouble all his friends are happily married, and now his mother has decided it is time for him to get married. He loves his life as a bachelor and no intentions of marring for a while. Lady Alexandra Davenport, the only daughter of the Earl of Weston has successfully been avoiding the marriage trap too, but now her father has set his sat his foot down and she marry or else. I love it when main characters change rolls. When they attend the same house party, but decide to swap identities with their servants. A captivating story unfolds as things don’t go quite as planned there’s twists and turns, humor and romance. I voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent book filled romance.

Allayne and Alexandra are both perfectly happy being single. Their parents not so much. Before they arrive at a house party each of their parents have guilted them in to attending, they both spontaneously have the idea to trade clothes and places with their valet/maid. What starts at a lighthearted farce (her name is Anna Banana and his "rodent" springs out of his pants) quickly turns much darker as they both go their own ways and years pass. When they meet at a ball four years later as themselves the attraction is still there but their new lives have complications. If you enjoy absurdity and drama in the same book this would be for you. Switched Identities Tale

When a viscounts son switches identity with his valet and an earl's daughter switches identity with her maid, love becomes very complicated! This story is filled with emotional upheavals, family scheming and sizzling sensuality. But most especially I enjoyed the humor - several scenes had me laughing so hard I almost rolled off the bed! Some of the secondary characters are absolutely delightful, especially the children and the old men. I recommend this book to historical romance readers who like laughs, meddling families, sensual heat, and a HEA. A highly entertaining read.

Disclaimer: I received this book from Netgalley + in exchange for an honest opinion. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!

WOW THIS IS SO SO SO GOOD!
This book is going to be one of my favorites in the historical romance genre. It's surprisingly good! I don't have a good time with some of the ARCs that I get so I personally don't have any expectations reading this book. IT TURNS OUT TO BE SO SO GOOD! It contains everything that I always want in a historical romance book. Funny and comedy moments, hot and full of tension moments, happy moments, heart-wrenching moments, angsty (like super angsty) moments, and fluff moments are all included in this beautifully written book! I like both characters and I love the way the author wrote this in 3rd POV from both our MC perspectives!

It's getting angstier towards the end of the book and I wished the author could add some more moments between Alexandra and Allayne MORE!!! I NEED MORE OF THEM!!! NEED MORE SMUT SCENES TOO!

This book is as par with 2 books by Evie Dunmore (One historical romance author whose books don't disappoint me so far)

I would like to read the 1st and 3rd books by the author! I hope I can get the 3rd book ARC from Netgalley!

Would have given five stars but…..

Wow the story started out so funny, but Anna banana had me laughing out loud. And when she knelt on a pillow in her carriage to pray, I thought oh good this will be a nice clean story. Oh yes plenty of romance all blown to heck with nothing but oral sex. So I took away three stars because it killed the romance. Then I had to find out how the story would end, with just too many stupid frustrations that went on for four years too long. And what’s the first thing he does when he sees her again? Starts with the oral sex. Nuts

This book is really the best in the series. Matchmaking gone awry, Allayne and Lady Alexandra pose as their servants to avoid each other at a house party. It's love at first sight when they meet and their mistaken identities lead to their separation and broken hearts.

I loved this book, it was fun and clever and heartbreaking at points. I wasn't expecting the second half to go the way it did so that surprised me. I read this whole series in a day.

This is the only book in the series where the characters fully consummate their relationship on page.

Too silly to be believed

I am crossing this author off my list. I like a historical romance to portray the manners of the time. Here, the "meet cute" is more reminiscent of a modern movie that I would manage to barely watch while doing my laundry. And this happens in Chapter One. Color me old and crotchety, but I have better things to read.
