The Governess Bureau #2

A Governess of Discretion

Rate this book
When a governess of great talents is required, there is only one place the nobility of England go: The Governess Bureau.

And one of the most trusted? Miss Anne Gilbert. She’s known for keeping her employer’s secrets, and when she is selected by the Earl of Clarcton, that is precisely why.

Because the Earl, Timothy Lexington, has secrets. Secrets he has worked hard to keep from the world for the last two years. While scandal waits in the wings, Clarcton Castle has entire wings that are shut off and the Countess is nowhere to be found.

Anne may be discrete, but that doesn’t mean she’s not curious. When Timothy makes a scandalous request of her—pretend to be his countess at the Christmas Ball to prevent rumors of her disappearance from spreading—he doesn’t tell her why. He doesn’t tell her she has a strange and unexplainable resemblance to his wife.

Anne is faced not only with half-lies and stony-faced servants…but a growing passion for the man she knows is lying to her. When an Earl won’t tell the truth about his own wife, a governess has only one course of action: accept the lies demurely. What a shame Anne isn’t going to stop seeking the truth.

As the Christmas Ball grows closer, will Anne learn to trust a man she knows is trying to deceive her? Is it possible that the truth, once found, will bring them closer together—or break the connection forever?

This full length novel is a steamy Regency romance with a happily ever after, no cliffhangers, and is part of a series that can be read in any order.

Second in a new series from Emily’s The Governess Bureau.

This has secrets that will remain in the closet way into the reading, if you love in-depth descriptions, chemistry, brooding alpha Earls, beautifully sweet four year olds, and a great and enjoyable storyline, this book is for you.

I for one really enjoyed the story and the characters and found the description of Anne’s first site of Timothy’s castle and grounds riveting, I could see it perfectly in my mind. So good.

I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review

Such a pretty cover for an utter disappointment.

Firstly, our main hero seemed a first-draft version of himself; very hollow and flat. Secondly, there are weird glaring inconsistencies throughout the story and the main mystery seems like a half-boiled afterthought. There is also the matter of how characters talk to one another; the rigid rules of aristocracy aren't present at all and I noticed quite a few mistakes when it came to introduction according to one's title... Finally, the writing in itself felt stiff and, at times, overbearing.

However, I did like the premise and the initial banter-y chemistry between our leads. I also liked Anne's grounded character and dedication she had for her work (which, to be fair, went to shit all too soon). Honestly, the biggest issue I had with this book was the lack of build-up and tension between Anne and Timothy - this could've been such a good angsty slow burn *sigh*

I will probably give this series another chance though my expectations have been dully cut down.

side note: the whole side plot with holt-whatever-his-name-was footman seemed unnecessary and the fact the earl didnt do a background check on his future wife...? eh too covenient. ALSO WHERE WAS THE SMUT?

This is the second book in the series & is very easily read on its own. I found it to be a well written book which started slowly but the pace gradually increased until I was totally engrossed. I loved Anne who was an intelligent caring woman, I liked Timothy but it took me some time to grow to really like him. Frances stole the book but then an adorable four year old was always going to do that! A very entertaining read with lots of secrets, mistrust & misunderstandings
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

Anne is a governess of discretion, but even she feels uncomfortable when the Earl that hires her also wants her to pretend she is his dead wife. Timothy’s wife died two years ago in an accident and he told people she was away. Now he wants the governess who looks very much like his dead wife to impersonate her at a ball. I did not like Timothy very much he felt hardly any qualms at having Anne governess his lonely daughter, impersonate his dead wife, and then maybe she can be his mistress too! I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.

Excellent

He is looking for a governess for his daughter but what he finds is a woman who resembles his previous wife so he comes up with this idea of her pretending to be his countess so that society stop asking him questions. But what he didn't except was to fall in love with his governess while he helps mold her into his previous wife.

This book is filled with secrets, deceit, love and happiness.

Definitely don't miss out on book 2 in this series

Anne is a governess known for keeping her employers secrets.
Timothy has secrets that need keeping. When Timothy requests quite scandalously that Anne pretend to be his countess she doesn't know what to say.
This book is a convoluted tale with kidnapping and a mystery.
What happened to the countess?
Emily Murdoch tells an exceptional tale.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.

SURPRISED THAT I RECEIVED AN EDITOR'S COPY OF THE BOOK!!!!

I got a version of the book with the Editor's comments highlighted in yellow. It made the book hard to read as the Editor's opinions stopped the flow of the story and brought out the books flaws.

The Governess Bureau strikes again and this time with Anne and her new position with Timothy, Earl of Clarcton.

Mystery surrounds the Earl and Anne feels she has heard some gossip about him but cannot remember what. He rushes her off to his home and barely talks to her on the way. It seems he is only concerned with "discretion."

But is she in for a surprise as she finds out what he really wants her to do! Totally unexpected and will keep you wondering until the end! Another great addition to this series!

ADULT Regency Romance💕
Boring, too long, and full of endless repetition and angst . There was Weird sentence structure at times with hanging participles. The idea of the novel was good, but the overall execution of the story was inferior.

I got this ebook from Amazon📚 with KU.

Probably won't read this author again.

Thank you Dragonblade Publishing for providing me with an early copy of this book.

This book was really lovely to read. It started off strong. I loved the tension building up slowly but the end of the sexual tension didn't pay off much for me. I think it was the author's intention to create a strain between the characters, but it wasn't something that pleased me. But I appreciate the angst that came after. However, some revelations to me seemed too stiff and revealed too suddenly without making much sense at the time. Such revelations could be worked out better and presented in another way, an example would be when the reason for the physical similarity between the characters is revealed.

As much as I didn't really like some of the directions taken by the author I really liked the way she solved the whole story and made Timothy suffer a little for being an asshole, don't get me wrong I liked him but at certain times he was an asshole and I loved seeing him suffer a little for his actions.

Now for the hot scenes I would grade it a 6 out of 10, it wasn't very explicit, so this book is great for those who don't like very explicit scenes and like a nice and easy-to-read novel.
------

I read all the time and do a number of ARC for authors. Which are advance reading copies. Reviews please be careful what you say in your review, don't give away things that will ruin the story for the people looking to buy this book.
Let them discover the twist and turns just as you did.

Ok back to the story, I love this series, I unfortunately read them out of order. I have gone back and am now reading the ones I missed.
There is mystery, intrigue, tons of secrets and a very strange household in a Castle ! What's not to like, Oh there is also an extremely handsome Earl and darling little girl too.
The Earl of Clarcton, Timothy has been keeping a number of secrets from the everyone. He has told all that his wife that has been gone for two years is away due to her health. The tons have many rumors being told of what may have happen to her and what he could have done. He is trying to keep the family reputation in tack for his young daughter.
Francis is just four years old and acts much older. She is a quiet child most of the time but has a temper too. Just like her father who can go from cold to boiling in just minutes. He speaks before thinking which always get him in trouble. He has been hurt badly in past. Some was his doing and most was by women who were not what they seemed.
Miss Anna Gilbert is one of the Governess who works for the Governess Bureau. Her last employer as labeled her a governess of discretion, which is just what Timothy needs. He hires her and whisks her off to his castle the next day.
Anna is amazed at his home it is really an old Castle. Anna has just only met Francis her charge when the Earl ask her
something that take her totally of guard ! He wants her to impersonate his wife at the Christmas Ball ! Let the games began.
Oh, what a fast read with lots going on, missing people, close mouth household and a lonely little girl.
A governess who feels more than she should and an Earl who wants what he can't have.
This is a fast-paced book and once you get started you will not be able to put it down. The interaction between Timothy and Anna is off the pages with want, but only a 2 on the steamy side.
I hope you get a copy. You will not be disappointed. You do not have to read the books in order but I feel knowing the history makes the story even better.

A Governess of Discretion by Emily E.K. Murdoch is the second in the Governess Bureau series. The Governess Bureau is am employment agency of sorts, which has very high standards for the governesses it represents, the third of which states: Never fall in love... Easier said than done, apparently. Miss Anne Gilbert has appeared to obtain an interview for her fourth posting, her last one having ended successfully. Timothy Lexington, the Earl of Clarcton, was standing behind her where she hadn't noticed him. Once her heard the words, "...a governess of discretion..." he was sold. Between that and her appearance, he hired her immediately, after which came several long days in a carriage during which her complained about the state of the roads, 36 times. It was a very pleasant journey. They did finally arrive and she was overcome with the size and beauty of his estate. She fell instantly in love with her four-year-old charge, Frances. Things were looking better than they had on the journey north. Until he asked a favor of her: would she pretend to be the countess for the Christmas ball he was hosting? The countess had not been seen for several years and marriage-minded young women and their mothers were inundating him. He wanted that to stop.

This was a convoluted story of love and loss; of a staff so loyal to the Earl that they would say almost anything or not say. Falling in love was a slow process, one that almost failed to take root because of situations and personalities from the past. It would have been a better story had there been less ruminating and more action, but it was entertaining enough, and certainly different that many Regency stories. They were both good characters that were moral and upright, if misguided. Murdoch is a lovely writer and this is a good series. I am happy to see it continue, although poor, Miss Clarke, the mistress of the Governess Bureau is going to have to relax this rule. I recommend it.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of A Governess of Discretion by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #agovernessofdescretion

3 1/2 stars that I couldn't quite round up to 4. I love a good Regency mystery, and this has some elements of an old fashioned Gothic romance, which I loved. Too bad the plot the H concocted to fool society, and to keep the ladies away from himself (poor guy--eyeroll), was so unbelievable. The mystery itself is rather interesting, although convoluted; it reminded me a bit of the movie "Vertigo" and kept me reading. However, the final revelation makes no sense at all, considering Louise's ambitious tendencies. Plus, there are inconsistencies/loose plot threads involving two key secondary characters.

I also had a problem with the H. He was an immature, arrogant snob, more often than not. I didn't really believe in his love or deep affection for h. The carriage ride to his ancestral home highlighted his jerkiness (it was very unrealistic that she would have been in a carriage alone with him for days). The h was a plucky young lady who was likable, but seemed to have little common sense when it came to H. I thought the condescending interior monologue she was having about him toward the resolution, when he was baring all to the solicitor, was humorous (this might have been my favorite part of the book). I think this was an attempt at a "Jane Eyre" sort of dynamic, but emotionally the H seemed to be all over the place. He was sweet toward his daughter--when he was with her.

There are editing errors here and there. Some reviews in August mentioned getting an early draft of the book, and I did notice a few notes still in this version, although I don't know if they were still left over by the publisher. I caught a few incorrect word choices and tense/punctuation errors, but the editing is actually better than in a previous book I read by this author.

I do appreciate that this author is trying to branch out into mysteries, which can be difficult to pull off, and I think she does a good job of sustaining mood during the first half of the story. Also, h's interactions with H's daughter are cute. You just have to be willing to suspend disbelief big time to get through the rest.

Heat level: 3. Nothing too explicit, only one sex scene, premarital. PG language.

The Governess of Discretion is book two in the Governess Bureau by author Emily E. K. Murdoch. This is a series bound together by a highly sought after bureau of skilled, refined, and disciplined governesses whom are available to raise and educate the nobility’s offspring.

The Governess Bureau has very strict standards and “When the nobility and gentility of England are at their wits end, they send a discrete note to Miss Vivienne Clarke’s Governess Bureau. Only accepting the very best clients, their governesses are coveted by minor royalty, with every governess following three rules:
1.   You must have an impeccable record.
2.   You must bring a special skill to the table.
3.   You must never fall in love…”

So far, In books one and two of this series the “rules” have been blown to pieces — this is the story of how Miss Anne Gilbert finds herself surrounded in a world of mystery and possible scandal as she tries to care and guide the Earl of Clarcton’s daughter.

I loved the mystery and subterfuge embroiled in this story. I wanted to know just exactly what hideous secrets the earl and all his employees were hiding and of course how these secrets would be brought to light. I did enjoy the way the author slowly reveals bits and bits of the backstory it made for an intriguing plot. I have to admit I felt like the romance between the H/h was vague and there were a lot of jumps the reader was expected to make. I would have liked to see more on page romance where the man actually worked to get his lady. It just felt a little skimpy for me, especially with all the hidden agendas and then arguments between H/h — there was very little reconciliation between the two characters. Needs more emoticons.

Overall a fun romantic mystery story 3.5 Stars | 3 Flames

I got a free copy of this from NetGalley for preview and this is my review for the same.

I really enjoyed the first and this second book in the series. I have not read a lot of Emily Murdoch, but she will be on my radar for future reads. I would say this is 3.5 stars; a solid read that I generally enjoyed.

This is the second book of the Governess Bureau. It was a bit slow going at first; the hero came across as an ass. Socially awkward, short tempered, a bit hot and cold. The heroine seemed to handle him rather well though. I liked her relationship with the child in the story; it seemed rather sweet and the child seemed to be starved for love and loveable as well. I warmed up to the hero when he did show his love for the child, despite his conflict about her.

A couple of the accessory characters and the relationships with them seemed a bit unclear, such as why the housekeeper was so hostile. The footman and his place in the story seemed a bit too short and rather unresolved in the end, as far as I was concerned; especially in light of his connection to the mystery central to the story.

The familial connection between the heroine and the hero, that was discovered later in the story, and the connection the mystery struck a bit of a cold note for me. Far too coincidental perhaps? But ultimately, I am looking for something fun and escapist to read that doesn't tax my brain power too much during these stressful times. Ultimately, I did find it novel with a heroine that was likeable and believable, and a decent romantic story line that had some conflict, was not too sweet and cutesy, a bit of steam, and an HEA.

Throw a dog or two in and I would have been even happier.

I enjoyed this book more than the first book. Anne is a governess of discretion, she doesn't give out her employers' secrets. Timothy is looking for a governess for his daughter, Frances and has more than his fair share of secrets.

Anne accepts the post but finds it strange that there's no countess around and the servants look at her strangely. Eventually she twigs that there's an unexpected link with Anne's own family. Timothy is very hot and cold. Should he make Anne his mistress, she's not of the same social strata as he is for her to be wife material...really!

Is Anne as calculating as his wife? Is he being duped. Why does Anne come out with the same phrases as his wife. This goes on a tad too long for me but eventually all is sorted. There were a couple of things I highlighted. Anne makes mention of a suit of armour that looked like a bear and she named it Teddy. Which seemed a bit odd as I thought bears were called Teddy after Roosevelt in 1902 and this romance is set in 1812. Timothy's friends wonder if he got divorced secretly, but I thought you'd need an act of parliament around this time so I can't see it would be very private. Uk Parliament web site tells me that there were 314 such acts between 1700 - 1857 mostly initiated by husbands citing adultery.

In my opnion this series is getting better as we progress and I'm intrigued to find out about the petite governess who specialises in twins.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is one of those books I really wanted to like more than I actually did. The premise seemed interesting until you realize that Timothy covered up his wife's death and pretended she was still alive. There were a lot of little things that just didn't make sense with this story. For example, based on everything we learn about Louise I do not for one moment believe she would lower herself to have an affair with a servant, let alone plan to run off with him. Then there is a suggestion that Holt was somehow involved in what happened to Louise but it goes nowhere - I also must have missed where he suggests he had something to do with it as Anne later tells Timothy. And why does Holt make a comment to Timothy about how he should not give up on Anne when her return would only bring to light everything he had done? Speaking of Holt, I would have liked just one more mention of him to find out how he reacted to his being sent off to the Navy. I also would have liked to know what exactly happened at Anne's prior placement - did her former employer appreciate her discretion regarding his mistress or him not paying her for several months?

I liked the parts with Anne and Frances and would have liked more them with Timothy - the ones we did get were sweet and made me root for them as a couple more than all of the ones with her getting her training for the ball. I wish that Anne hadn't run off to London after her argument with Timothy, I thought she was made of stronger stuff than that.

A Governess of Discretion is a regency romance, with multiple perspectives. Timothy needs a governess to help with his four year old child as well as a secret motive, to insure the eligible ladies of society stop throwing themselves at him. That is where Anne comes in, she is hired to look after this child, but getting information from anyone about her new charge or the household becomes daunting. As Anne and Timothy get to know each other, Timothy starts letting people back into their lives. Anne begins to understand the complex man that is her new master. I loved Anne as a character, she was sweet, dealt with bad behaviors and bad tempers, like a pro. Tims character, I really did not like him, even after I found out why he handled things the way he did. He just came off angry all the time or how he handled his child up until Anne showed up, pissed me off. So it put a bit of a hiccup in the development of the Romance between him and Anne. The plot and the writing were great, I liked how the storyline flowed. I was more of a drama and hardship kind of story. If you are looking for a more heavy hearted romance leaning more toward the plot , I would definitely check this story out. While I did have some problems with it, I still enjoyed it very much.
Trigger warnings:infidelity, accidental death, sexual harassment

Miss Anne Gilbert would be considered the most trusted governess, in her position at the Governess Bureau. So, when the Timothy Lexington, the Earl of Clarcton, visits her employer, that is precisely why he selects her and whisks her away to Clarcton Castle within the hour. It soon becomes apparent to Anne, that Timothy has many secrets. When Timothy asks her to pretend to be his countess at the Christmas Ball to prevent rumours of his wife’s disappearance, he can’t quite tell Ann what has happened to his wife. Nor does he reveal her uncanny resemblance to his wife. Yet Anne knows that Timothy is only telling her half the truth, but despite this, she finds herself falling in love with him.
I loved both characters – Anne for her straightforward manner and her ability to see the good in everything. I loved Timothy for his ability to make Anne feel significant and for his undying love for his daughter. What a lovely couple! This book kept me captivated from beginning to end with all the twists. I must say I found it to be one of my favourite by Emily Murdoch.
I so look forward to more books in this series.

This is the second book in 'The Governess Bureau series" I haven't read the first book in the series but I don't feel this distracted from me enjoying the story. However I might go back and read the first book as I really enjoyed the and the character of Miss Anne Gilbert and have a feeling Meredith story, who has a cameo in this book would be just as entertaining.

Miss Clarke runs the very reputable Governess Bureau, and Anne happens to be one of her best members of staff who comes with great approval from her previous employees as she keeps the mans scandalous secrets.

Earl, Timothy Lexington, is in need of a governess for his four year old daughter and hears of Miss Gilbert from the disgraced lord who's secret she has kept, but everyone knows about as he is not himself discreet. I really enjoyed this book it was the perfect mix of historical fiction and romance. With characters who has a spark from the outset and we are along for the ride to see the feelings blossom.

I voluntarily received a copy of A Governess of Discretion in exchange for an honest review. Thank you NetGalley!

This book is a wild romp filled with lies, deceit, an insane plan, and of course romance!

Anne Gilbert is a Governess from a highly respected Governess bureau. So when Timothy comes in search of one who knows how to keep a secret he picks her out right off the bat. It doesn't help that she bares more then a passing resemblance to his wife. This leads to them attempting a most difficult charade - for one night she must pretend to be his Countess.

It is hard to talk about particulars with this romance. There was so many layers of lies and deceit that things get revealed throughout and it would be so hard not to spoil it. I really enjoyed this though! Even though quite a few of the twists were incredibly easy to guess. One thing I really enjoyed is that the way this book was structured it gave time for the characters to actually get to know each other so when they inevitably fell in love it made sense!

Discrete resemblance

Timothy took one look at Anne an immediately began his deceit! He knew when he saw her she looked enough like his wife (deceased) for an impersonation! Anne was discrete but was she smart? Not to me!
She agreed to the charade to fool several people at the ball an event Timothy groomed her for supposedly to run off all the women after him! These women believed since the countless hadn't seen for two years than he was fair game! This is all so bizarre to me! Timothy was proud and knew his wife had played him false. It wasn't the child's fault! Trying or even thinking to bed your child's governess and set her up as your mistress!??
Anne was too eager to be in love she gave him all the power as he never said any tender emotions! I found him arrogant and too full of himself! At least she told him if the villain and offered a sensible solution! Whew this series is beyond interesting but the heroes so far are lacking!! Timothy was selfish rude and unhappy but to keep confusing Anne with your dead wife and making comparisons!!??? What!!

Miss Anne Gilbert is a governess,  she has a reputation for being discrete and never gosiping about an employer.  Her last charges have outgrown her so she is looking for a new family to work for.

The Governess Bureau only deal with the best governesses and clients.

Timothy Lexington, Earl of Clarcton needs help with young Frances. She is four years old and needs more than a nursery nurse.  Unfortunately he has some huge secrets that cannot be allowed to become public knowledge.

All of our hero's staff are very happy working for him,  but he does seem to have a hair-trigger temper.  The mysterious absence of his Countess has caused speculation.

Our heroine is very good at her job, but can't help being curious.

Is there danger in this home??

I loved all the characters. A fabulous storyline with a bit of mystery.

Although it is part of a series, each book is a seperate story.

Really good fun.

I found a certain amount of suspense in this novel as secrets abound. Selected by the Earl of Clarcton as a governess to his daughter, Miss Anne Gilbert, known as a Governess of Discretion, is taken aback not only by his speedy choice but also that he insists that they depart the city immediately for his home. Anne is concerned about the household as no one is willing to discuss the Countess with Anne. As she gets closer to the truth, Anne finds herself agreeing to a charade that goes against everything she believes in. Anne had my full sympathy, but Timothy Lexington is hard to like with his prevaricating and the manner in which he blew hot and cold towards Anne. He had so many secrets, that they kept tripping him up. Whilst the novel does come to a happy conclusion, I found the closing chapters left me with a grumpy feeling and a lot of questions. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Anne Gilbert is a governess with the Governess Bureau. She I s known for her truthfulness, intregetity, and keeping her employers families information confidential. The Earl of Lexington, Timothy is seeking just such a governess because he has some major issues within his household and after seeing Anne he believes part of his problems can be solved by her in two areas if he can get her to agree.

This book is truly an amazing maze because your on one path for sure and then you are turned around and blocked off and have to go back! The author has done a superb job in keeping the characters fresh and engaging which sometimes can be overdone in a series like this about a specific type of character! However, that is not the case with this series! Read on everyone because I can’t wait for the next release!

I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.

I enjoyed this book.
The one thing I applauded the author for was a very unique storyline with some twists. The tension that builds throughout is very well done as well.
Overall I came to like the character of Timothy. At first, he is quite cold and standoffish but then you start to see gentle traits to him and by the end, you come to understand his pain and hurt.
Anne however I didn't much care for. As a governess, she was quite out of line in terms of attitude. I understand she is outspoken but I felt too much so, especially if she was one of the best governesses at the Bureau.
There were some loose ends that were left hanging I felt, particularly when it came to the footman Holt and his part in the history of the family.
I do highly recommend this book, it is a sweet, slow-burning love story, HEA, mystery, nothing explicit written.
I received an advanced copy in exchange for my review

Timothy Lexington, Earl of Clarcton, needs a governess for his daughter. His life and home are full of secrets, and he wants to keep them there. Miss Anne Gilbert is just what he needs, a governess of discretion.

This is a story with secrets, a missing person mystery, a ruse, and a few twists and surprises. It has a bit of a Gothic feel to it. It takes place in an impressive (according to Anne) castle with a brooding Earl and secretive staff. Anne is intelligent and caring. She is immediately taken with Timothy’s daughter. Four-year-old Frances is delightful. The villain is a surprise, but he gives himself away. I enjoyed the story, and I loved the ending. Engaging story, interesting characters. A good read.

I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is voluntary.

*I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
It took me some time to get into the story, its slow at the beginning but towards the middle, the pace picks up and I couldn't wait to know all the Earl's secret. This is the second book of The Governess Bureau Serie´s and it can be read as a standalone.
I like Anne, she was discreet but she was curious about everything and a little fun at times. But when the Earl makes the request of being his wife for just a little bit, she is intrigued. But, that is his dead wife. I had a little trouble liking the Earl, he wants Anne to be "his wife" while taking care of this daughter and maybe be his mistress while they are at it. In the end, we get the secrets, there is no cliffhanger.
