Les Dames Dangereuses #1

The Assassin and the Libertine

Rate this book
The fate of France itself is at stake if these sworn enemies cannot change their ways—and their hearts.

Daphne de Duras is a proper French duchess by day and fledgling assassin by night. Her latest mission is to dispatch justice and protect the French aristocracy by executing Étienne de Noailles, disgraced former noble, legendary rake, and vampire emissary to the court of King Louis XV.

But Étienne’s alleged crime—the gruesome murder of Madame de Pompadour, the King’s mistress and Daphne's friend—doesn’t quite fit the dashing vampire’s nature. With his immortal days suddenly numbered, Étienne needs to convince his would-be executioner not only of his innocence, but that they should hunt the real killer together—a challenge almost as difficult as convincing himself that he isn’t falling for her.

Daphne reluctantly agrees to a temporary partnership when Étienne persuades her that something more sinister is afoot. He can, after all, help her find answers in places she’s unable to go alone. And despite her deep loathing for any and all vampires, she can't help but start thinking of a few other places she'd like to go with him.

This is a fun take on vampires - this time in the court of Louis XV in Versailles and in enlightenment Paris. No, Marie-Antoinette is not queen, but if she were, she might have said, "Let them drink blood." Peasants are having such a difficult time finding food to eat that vampirism seems to be the only option other than starving to death. Etienne is the vampire emissary to the court, and he's trying to pass reforms both to recognize vampire rights but also to reduce the amount of peasants "turning" to vampirism. Daphne is a part of a secret group that assassinates vampires to keep the blood plague at bay. She and Etienne join forces to solve the mystery of who killed Madame de Pompadour.

Look, if you want a fun vampire romance set in Paris, you don't have to look any further. The gestures toward social justice are a nice overlay to vampire lore, and the court politics in the age of Louis XV add a unique setting. The romance advances in fits and starts, but has a satisfying resolution. And who can resist a vampire love story where the woman has the best tasting blood ever?

This objective review is based on a complimentary advanced reader copy of the novel.

25% DNF I didn’t realize this was about vampires. The logistics of their life make my head spin. Plus I didn’t feel the chemistry between MCs.

2023 REREAD: First time returning to these characters and this world in years because I had pretty much forgotten everything outside of the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed this book the first time I read it. Nothing has changed on that front. Daphne is still as glorious and clever and stubborn as hell as she ever was. Étienne is still deliciously complex and wonderful. And their relationship/chemistry is fire and the twists in this book are excellent and the slow-burn is agonizing, but I love it. Also - Charlotte remains my absolute favorite.

Officially bumping this up to 5 ⭐

This book is a diamond in the rough. Criminally underrated.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
(4.5 ⭐)

Murder mystery meets paranormal romance in a historical setting, complete with a self-sufficient heroine that kicks ass, plus a sexy rake of a vampire with a secret cinnamon roll center. Umm... yes please!

This is such a great debut from Lily, I am genuinely proud of her!

I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry between Étienne and Daphne. You've got two people with their own sets of baggage and contradictory world views finding common ground, evolving, and - most importantly - falling in love.

While this book definitely has romance (and spicy goodness), the smut really does come second to the overarching story, and the hobbyist writer in me really appreciated that "getting naked and horizontal" didn't automatically resolve Étienne and Daphne's issues. It was a nice change of pace from what I normally read.

I also really enjoyed the political intrigue and social commentary as well... along with the nods to Dracula my first love ;)

AND THAT PLOT TWIST, THOUGH!

OH! And Charlotte is the G.O.A.T. Adore her. Can't wait for her book (which I believe is next)! If you haven't picked this up yet, you absolutely should!

The Assassin and the Libertine, by Lily Riley. Ohhhh wait until you get a load of this book. Move over Twilight saga, we have a vampire saga for the adults. And oh boy is it a good one. Before I begin, I have to say this.
Etienne I LOVE YOU and yes I will lay down where ever you desire to take me. Uhm, now that I have gotten that out my system I will share my review with you. Now I normally don’t read paranormal romance books. I actually came across this book without reading the synopsis and I’m glad that I didn’t, because this book was astounding. Ladies you are absolutely going to love this romantic love affair.
A love affair between a woman who clearly knows how to handle herself in a bad situation, and an irresistible vampire that will have you wanting to read more about him and his rakish ways. Oh yes ladies. Etienne contributed most handsomely to my imaginations of a wet read and I think that he will do the same for you. Now, the partnering of Daphne and Etienne together was fabulous. The two characters fed off each other so well.
I loved how the writer crafted their dialogue, helping the plot move easily for the readers. The dialogue was a most added benefit to the dangers of the story. While reading these scenes my imagination took over, offering me not only the rage, but the fear of love and passion from the characters. When it came to the strong desires of Etienne and Daphne, the dialogue not only intensified their scenes, but ignited something so real. Their raw dialogue ignited the flames of passion to wear they had to continually flick their clothes off.
I will add this little side note to the writer, please add more detailed love scenes, naughty dialogue, the works. The steamier the better. Just enough to cover a couple of pages. I thought Daphnes characters was fantastic. Her cousin Charlotte was a beast herself, but back to Daphne though.
Daphne was hell fire in heels and she did not play. The woman knows how to take down vampires in darken alleyways and stare down the many faces of evil without breaking a nail or ruining her hair. I absolutely loved her quick wit and razor sharp tongue. It was her undeniable desires for Etienne that had me chanting for her to give in to her temptations, as well as that the little voice in the back of her mind, telling her to take that leap. Enjoy yourself.
Explore all the wonderful ways that he can give you exquisite, carnal pleasure. Ladies the plot wasn’t bad itself. I thought that would throw that in there, just to keep my review from being all about the fun times between the sheets. Bwahhahaha! Who am I kidding here?
Yes I am! Girl that Etienne, sauntered his way into the garden party like he owned the place. His words flowed through this book like a sugary sweet lollipop that Daphne excitedly begged to lick at. Etienne’s character is a very strong and dominant one who softens to the pleasure of looking upon Daphne’s sultry face. Not only does he challenges, but he fights the demons of hell, just to see that Daphne achieve her goals of fighting for what is right in the world that she believes in.
Their intimate relationship grows to a higher level as they try to save the people of Paris from the dangers that haunts the allies at night. Readers let me tell you, the plot was fresh and engaging with the characters. I said that I would talk about Charlotte and I will. That woman was phenomenal. I loved her brazen craziness.
She had me chuckling every time she kicked a certain person backside. Charlotte brought the humorous side to this story that collided well with the entertainment. This book is an exciting and easy read for me. The narrative and dialogue was on point. I don’t think that the story trailed away from the main points of the story.
The details regarding the history of Paris was informative. I thought that the action scenes were intense, adding to some good visual as I read these parts. This book reads with so much ease that I couldn’t put it down until I had read the last word. Lily Riley has provided a book that’s an awesome page turner. I recommend this book with two snaps and a, “Charlotte stop kicking the poor man’s head, he’s already unconscious”.
“I was making sure that he was still alive, Daphne.” Until next time my fellow readers… read on!

The characters and their chemistry are well-crafted, and that's the main thing that drew me to this book. The world-building left me a little wanting, especially in the believability department. This is mostly because I am a historian, and because of just how much I know about religious beliefs in pre-revolutionary France. Hundreds of thousands of human beings were murdered for being suspected of Protestantism (heaven forfend!) devil worship, witchcraft, and YES, vampirism, so I found a general acceptance of vampirism as a part of life that was welcomed by the peasantry (the most superstitious category of people ever), and without causing yet MORE religious massacres unbelievable. If the author had leaned in more to a throwaway line about secret societies and religious orders, that would have felt much more authentic to the tenor of the period, AND it would have made the tension between the two MC's that much more delicious, that much more intriguing.

This story swept me off my feet with its captivating mix of historical intrigue and supernatural romance. Étienne and Daphne, with their complex backgrounds and sizzling chemistry, quickly became characters I couldn't get enough of as they delved into the mystery of Madame de Pompadour's murder. I adored Étienne's enigmatic charm and Daphne's fierce independence. Watching them grow from reluctant allies to passionate lovers was an exhilarating journey. The romance is passionate yet tastefully written, focusing on the characters' emotional growth alongside their physical attraction. It's a refreshing take that balances steamy moments with an interesting storyline, including a shocking plot twist that caught me off guard. I'd highly recommend checking it out!

I love historicals but I also love when they blend the paranormal in with them, and this was a fun read on several levels, not the least of which was because it was set in a time period that doesn’t often get attention in histroms. Lady assassin + sexy vampire + French court intrigue + a murder mystery to solve made this one a very entertaining and easy read for me, and the chemistry between Daphne and Etienne was super juicy. I’m just as excited for the fact that this is going to be a series, because I’m so curious about who Charlotte’s mystery hero is.

Lily Riley’s The Assassin and the Libertine takes you to a re-imagined version of the rich and vibrant court of Louis XV where women work as assassins for a secret society, and the growing population of vampires require an undead emissary to the king. Étienne de Noailles is a rakish vampire who I dare you not to fall for. This literal bad boy meets his match in the vibrant Daphne de Duras, a savvy heroine who has the gumption to go toe to toe with a vampire as a partner to navigate the intricate maze of a murder mystery. The historical detail is a wonderful theatrical backdrop to Lily Riley’s face-paced and heart pounding journey of love and death. A fantastic read.

THE ASSASSIN AND THE LIBERTINE was a really interesting concept but I quickly realized I don't like 1700's France as a setting. I rarely read historical romance but I was hoping the incorporation of vampires would make this more interesting for me. Sadly, it did not.

I wasn't interested in the political intrigue, the hero appears to loathe the upper classes yet has still managed to apparently sleep with all the women at court and the heroine was unappealingly delusional about the disparity between the wealthy and the poor. Just not for me, I guess.

Content Warning: up to the point I read there were references to the heroine being abused by her late husband

Summary: Daphne de Duras is a proper duchess by day, turned vampire hunter at night. Plagued by the deaths of her brother and a close friend, Daphne forces her way into The Order, a religious group dedicated to eradicating those infected by the blood plague. Tasked with killing the king’s vampire emissary, Étienne Noailles, Daphne finds herself conflicted and searching for the truth of her friend’s death.
Étienne is a fan favorite amongst the noble ranking women of the tonne thanks to his charming good looks and attention to detail in the bedroom. Longing for more, he teams up with his would be assassin to shed light on the true issues that advance the blood plague, attempting to stop a revolution before it occurs.

Thoughts: Indie author Lily Riley gives her own take on the vampire world in her debut novel set in 18th century France. Staying true to the time period, Riley does a phenomenal job using language that enforces the time period to transport you into a colorful French quarter; complete with French phrases that would likely make me blush if I knew what they meant. The story is thought out and completed in a way that gives end to Daphne’s story while opening the door for a supporting character to become a main character. I love when author’s do this! I appreciated the built attraction between the characters which was well paced and realistic, no room for instalove here!
Overall, I thought the story was good, but I never quite got past good. I figured out who the villain was about half way through and never really felt connected to the FMC or attracted to the MMC, when normally I feel like I’m standing next to them in the action. That being said, this could easily be four or five stars for someone who does connect to the main characters. Still looking forward to the sequel as Charlotte is a character I did grow attached to!

Daphne is an assassin for the Order, which takes out Vampires who commit the most atrocious acts. Étienne is a vampire hoping for a better future, but his plans go on pause when he is accused of murdering the king’s mistress. When both assassin and vampire team up to find the real killer, romance blooms as darker forces are at work.

I actually really enjoyed this book. It’s set in 18th century France and was a face paced read. What I would say is that it doesn’t really feel like 18th century France, the language is modern and the book has a very modern day feminist feel to it. So I felt the book could’ve just been set in modern times, because it being set in that time period didn’t really add anything for me.

I loved both of the main characters and loved the fact we got both POV’s. The character development is really good, mainly seen from Daphne’s side as she becomes more open minded throughout the book. Étienne was just a little darling and I just wanted to give him a hug.

The plot was really good. I loved the mystery behind the killings and the creepiness when we got to certain parts. The plot twist was just incredible and I really didn’t see that coming. I do want to find out more about the order and who is behind it, so I’m hoping we’ll find out more about that in book two.

Overall, I devoured the majority of this book in one sitting because it was such an easy read. The plot to romance ratio was perfect and I can’t wait to read book two.

Thank you so much to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I never go into a book thinking I’m going to dislike it. But I certainly wasn’t expecting to love THE ASSASSIN AND THE LIBERTINE the way I did! It’s such a wonderfully fun book! I had a hard time putting it down.

Daphne is a wonderful character, pushing the boundaries of her role in society to the breaking point only to pull back once again. She’s a broken individual who’s desperately trying to hold herself together, but comes unraveled in the face of Étienne. Can’t say I blame her.

Étienne is just as broken of an individual, just in different ways. It’s no surprise that he and Daphne are so drawn together. He’s very usual in terms of being the vampire love interest for the scorned duchess, but I have to say it’s a trope I love. I can’t help it. I can read those kinds of vampires all day, and Étienne is no different. He comes off great on page (heh) and I think the chemistry between him and Daphne is spot on. I couldn’t look away.

The story itself was fantastic, sucking me in from the beginning (heh). I didn’t see the plot twist coming, and I found it so fitting once it did. It added a level of sinister to the story and also looped other plot elements in for a more robust tale.

I literally have nothing bad to say about THE ASSASSIN AND THE LIBERTINE. I couldn’t get enough of it and I want to read more. Luckily, I have book two waiting for me.

The Assassin and the Libertine, Lily Riley

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: General Fiction (Adult), Romance, Sci Fi & Fantasy

well, romance, history, vampires – sounds great fun. And it was but....somehow I expected a bit more depth. Its weird saying this given the subject matter but it felt a bit light and fluffy for me despite the demon side, the vampires, the death of people from starvation – and of course the gruesome deaths.
If you want a read that's easy to follow along, has some sensuality to it, and yet more than just sex in the plots this is a fun read. I just didn't feel for me that it was a five star because everything felt a little surface treated. The parts that were dark, Etienne's past, Daphne marriage, were just sort of excused as “happened in the past” when for me they were a huge factor in how the characters behave now.
Its interesting, the premise of the Order was good, and I did like the characters but its just wasn't enough depth for me to rate higher. As ever though that's personal, it will be perfect for others who don't want that intensity to plots, we all enjoy different things in our reading. I'm unsure if I'll continue with the series, unless it gains more detail I suppose.

Stars: Three, a fun read, easy to follow, but ultimately a little light for me.

Vampires. Assassins. Secret Orders. Nobility. Seduction and intrigue. Can this book get better? Why. Yes, yes it can. Set in France during the era of King Louis, Daphne is tasked with dusting a noble vampire rumored to be draining women and leaving them to die but things grow even more personal at the death of a dear friend of Daphne's and the Secret Order has tasked to her to take out the rumored hand behind it. But when said vampire expresses his innocence, Daphne grows doubtful of what she's been told.

Romance. Suspense. Occults and secret sects, this story is a page turning addiction that I had a hard time putting down once started.

I love the balance between the two main characters as well as the different parts of the supernatural.

I had so much fun with this and love the set up for the next book.

Content Warning: domestic abuse, violence, rape (off page and implied)

A thoroughly enjoyable supernatural romance! It's rare for me to be able to sit down and feel the drive to read a book from start to finish in the span of a single day, but that's what happened with The Assassin and the Libertine.

Full of endearing characters, a compelling plot, and meaningful world building, this is what Fred and Ginger were singing about in their song: "A Fine Romance."

I will also say that vampire stories aren't typically my thing, having had that ruined by a certain series during my jaded youth, but Lily Riley wrote about them in a mature way that I could connect with. Not to mention her ability to explain their integration during this time period was extremely clever.

10/10 recommend this one!

The first book in the Les Dames Dangereuses series a well written story that kept me turning pages. This is a new Author to me and it looks like this is her debut story. I will be watching to see what else she puts out. Daphne de Duras is a proper French duchess by day and fledgling assassin by night she has been sent to execute vampire Étienne de Noailles, but he is not guilty of the crime. They must work together to find out who really did it. The story has suspense, drama, danger, twists, turns, villains, and romance.I would recommend. Fully review posted at Thoughts Stained With Ink:

Friends, I found another romance author to absolutely obsess over their publishing schedule! And by that, I mean constantly check to see when they have another book coming out. Because even though The Assassin and the Libertine is my first Lily Riley book, it's absolutely not going to be my last.

I know the review might actually feel a bit subpar for an author I know want to obsess and watch over. 😅 Yet despite some of the negatives I had with The Assassin and the Libertine, I honestly had a great time with it. I even already own the sequel, The Outlaw and the Duke, so I'm planning to start that this week. These books aren't quite the steampunk romances I've always craving, but they have enough of the vibes that I'm enjoying them highly!

Okay. So. Historical romance (mid-1700s France) plus vampires (and more)? Uhm. Yes, please! I read this in one sitting and it could not have been more perfectly tailored to my tastes. Wow! I adored the characters, the setting, the plot. It was such a treat to read. I'm heavily invested in what happens in book 2--that teaser? Yep. Here for it. Have a found a new series to add to my absolute favorites? It's entirely possible.

What a great paranormal romance with plenty of mystery, action and romance. 3.5/5 for me.
The setting made this so unique and immersive. As a person who loves French history I was geeking out.
I think the characters were done really well too. Daphne in particular. Both main characters had agency and their own journeys to go through.
The pacing was perfect. I was never bored.
The cover is gorgeous too!
Can’t wait to see what happens with the next installment.

This was such a fun and exciting read. I loved this take on vampires, a vampire plague and Versailles France. Daphne was a headstrong kickass character and I loved her growth throughout. Etienne was everything a French vampire should be. This was a fast paced slow build romance. It felt genuine and not forced. I loved Charlotte and cannot wait for her next installment. This was such an entertaining supernatural romance! I’d highly recommend.

This book was so much fun! The characters were everything I want out of a romance heroine and hunk while coming across totally human and somehow believable despite being neither human nor real?? How does Riley do it? The amount of research that must have gone into the Parisian setting really paid off and the adventure and intrigue only made the steamy bits that much more… satisfying. Le sigh. Can’t wait for the next installment of the DD!

"Great love demands great sacrifice."

The cover is giving Regency romance.
The title is giving The Scarlet Pimpernel.
The synopsis (vampires in the court of the Sun King) is giving nonsense.

But when I tell you I loved every dang second of this I am as shocked as you are. I pick up things on Stuff Your Kindle Day just to have things for a rainy day and then I wind up reading them months later and being mad I waited so long. This is one of those.

So I didn't think I was a big vampire person, and then this book happened, and I've never been so happy to be wrong! This was a fresh new take on vampire romance that I couldn't put down. The chemistry between the romantic leads was sizzling and the historical setting added just the right amount of romance. The story was fast paced and kept me on my toes. All in all a great read!
