Monster Bites #2

Her Alien Ghost

Rate this book
Firebrook Castle is haunted.

What utter nonsense! I never believe silly ghost stories… until I suddenly inherit the crumbling Firebrook estate. And now I’m a human bravely staying the night in an old ruin to prove that tales of ghostly Hyrrokin soldiers are just that…tall tales.

And then I scream like a little girl when I discover a black-horned, satanic-looking male standing at the foot of my bed, who isn’t entirely corporeal. Which I must say, is a total bummer considering how unbearably handsome he is.

Each night this scary, shirtless apparition with an exquisite six pack of abs, hovers at my bedside.

Is this “ghost” stalking me?

And…why do I like it?

Author’s Note: No worries, this ‘Monster Bites’ novella includes all the consent and a guaranteed HEA! But, only read if you enjoy fire-breathing heroes and curvy-girl heroines!

Third time was not the charm with this author.

Cue the sad trombone.

I always want to love her books—the premises lure me in—but the execution doesn't do it for me, so I end up in "Eh, Okay" land and feeling a bit let down in the end. Her work is cute and pretty par-the-course for the alien romance genre, but they do not reinvent the wheel here and fall flat for me in several places where other peers are more successful:

1- The dialogue. Lordy, the painful, stilted, slightly juvenile dialogue—especially once sex scenes come into play.

2- She shies away from erotic scenes. They do not fade to black by any means, but they are sparse, do not have much detail, and always go by pretty fast, almost like skimming but with writing. I get the impression that they either make her feel uncomfortable and afraid someone is looking over her shoulder or like she's giggling at "being naughty" when writing them. Some erotic content, yes. Filthy? Not really. But my personal gauge for filthy is a lot higher than this, so. 🤷‍♀️

3- It's the same marshmallow "alpha" every single one I've read. I can never tell you their personalities except being obsessed with the heroine. And he's always paired with the bland, too perfect heroine. In this case, Emma's only real personality trait was being certain there are no ghosts and never could be. Just another Generic Nice Girl™.

(To be fair, the majority of alien romance is plagued with this issue. In the past I've compared it to Disney Prince Syndrome. The MMCs are basically just bland, generic stand-ins. The FMCs are rarely much better.)

The first 80% of this story was actually fairly enjoyable. I rather liked that there was not an instant solution—it even seemed a little Beauty and The Beast to me for some reason...maybe the run down "haunted" castle—but there weren't any true conflicts or peril in this story either. After so much hype and fixation on The Danger!!! the problem was resolved in less than a page with a literal flip of a switch. Why plant plot seeds that come to nothing? Not even a little tension or uncertainty.

Anywho.

If you enjoy other works by Mills, you'll probably eat this one up too. It wasn't for me.

All is not as it seems at Firebrook Castle as Emma Lavigne soon learns after mysteriously inheriting the crumbling estate. Determined to turn the place into a viable hotel/restaurant she ignores the superstitious local Gavarin warnings that it’s haunted and goes ahead with her plans to spend the night there to prove them wrong. So begins another lighthearted VERY entertaining Hyrrokin doozy of a narrative. This is just the read to warm you up, when the frost is on the pumpkin. LOVED IT!!!

I am glad to note that the lead female, Emma, is already familiar with the look of the Hyrrokin species, and it's hilarious how Skogg accepts her presence instantly.

The ghost story is fun; I wish there were more. However, I must mention the ridiculousness of this installment's "love" element. It was lust (and a break from loneliness) at first sight, but who am I to judge if they want to call it love?

And as is often the case, I couldn't help but smile at the end.

Overall good but....

Could have been executed better. Felt like pieces were missing in their connection. They go from hardly knowing each other to would you be my mate and I love you. Where was the growth in the relationship?

The Hyrrokkin is back! and this one happened on planet Salo. Remember the planet where the MultiGods Pilgrim came every year?! Yeah, that one. This one was a kinda beauty and the beast version but with Michele Mills fun style. A human inherited an abandoned ruined castle (or domicile as these aliens would call it) as a joke. You see, the place was haunted by the so-called red soldier ghost. And who would be a perfect person (or sentient) to take care of it other than a poor human student on planet Salo who tried to apply for permanent citizenship. Fortunately, our h was fierceless, smart as heck, and witty with a soft heart. And so she discovered the mystery of the haunted castle (or domicile).
description

Uggghh, Michele Mills always delivered, even more with this swooning magical story of ghost. It was sweet and swooning. And definitely fun to read with some unexpected twist and turn. I found myself kept on looking forward to how Ms Mills would turn our ghost H into a HEA. And it wasn't disappointing at all.

No virgin
No condoms
Human h and Hyrookin (demon looking alien) H
Dual PoV, 1st person
No cheating
No drama/angst
Safe read, HEA, epilogue
Overall score: 4 fun romance stars

A "haunted" castle bequeathed to a human lady who doesn't believe in ghosts. Emma's determined to show it isn't actually haunted and the locals are convinced she's 100% wrong. You know, because they've seeeeeen the Red Soldier haunting its halls.

Not surprisingly, she's a wee bit startled when a red-skinned, black-horned Hyrrokin materializes in front of her. She's also a wee bit taken with his sexy muscles and handsome face. She's also 100% convinced he isn't a ghost despite the fact he can materialize as needed (at night, at least) and he's invisible during the day.

On his end, Skrogg is holding out hope someone will eventually be able to figure out what's going on with him. The little human seems like his best bet (and his only one, really) and he's not AT ALL adverse to spending time with her.

Some ghostly (of a sort) shenanigans, a very superstitious group of locals, ghost hunters, a merc looking for a way out, and a human who refuses to give up. *thumbs up*

This is a good sci-fi alien romance, but I did have some minor issues with it. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

First, it was too short to have as much character development as I like. I would have liked a little more backstory on both Skogg and Emma.

Emma was likable, and I was glad she figured out quickly that Skogg wasn't really a ghost, just a victim of an accident that caused him to be non-corporeal much of the time. I liked that she was determined to find a way to save him, and fell in love with him along the way.

Skogg was likable, too, and so very honorable. He knew that Emma was his mate, yet he still worried that she would be hurt/killed in attempting to save him. He was willing to let her go to protect her, since he was afraid for her safety. I was glad, though, that she was determined to help him.

I liked that curvy girls were considered beautiful in Skogg's world, since everyone on his planet was much larger than any human. I also liked that Skogg was so very honorable, and tried to resist Emma to protect her.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

She is determined to make it a sucessful resort but first she has to prove it isn't haunted. She decides to spend the nightin the most haunted room in the top of the the tall tower. To her great surprise the room is clean and in good condition so she decides to use the bed and sleep for the night. The writing and editing of the ARC version of the manuscript was clean, with a fun, sparkling authorial voice. The world building was minimal but competently sketched out. The hero and heroine were both sympathetic individuals, if not especially nuanced. The romantic relationship was brief and sweet. The heat level in this very short story was three stars. The plot and pacing were competent, though the very short length of this story made it feel a bit cramped. There was low angst and somewhat high stakes in this story, which I enjoyed. The world building, plot, and pacing were all four stars. The characterization and development of the romantic relationship were four stars, considering the length of this story did not leave much room for characterization and relationship development. I therefore gave this story a combined rating of four stars. This story ended on a Happy Ever After ending instead of a cliffhanger ending, so that was a major plus. I recommend this story as a Kindle Unlimited checkout if you need something quick for a waiting room. I do not know if I will read the next short story in this series. I will not buy a keeper copy of this story, because it was way too short, which is a common frustration I have with this particular author.

The couple: Skrogg and Emma

Romance trope: alien
Series: Monster Bites
Length: 90 pages

Plot: Emma has inherited a "haunted" castle and she's determined to prove it isn't haunted so that she can turn it into a B and B/resort. One inside, she meets a half-spectral half-solid Hyrrokin warrior that was presumed dead. More than anything, both of them would like to figure out how to make Skrogg whole again.

Commentary: The characters were fairly bland and predictable. It was an odd take to have the ghost be someone who was actually not in a solid state for part of the time, but I think that was the most interesting part of the story. My favorite books (as in 4 and 5 stars) from this author are Die for You (a post-apocalyptic trilogy) and The Vandal and the Virgin.

Previous book in the series: Her Alien Priest
Next book in the series: Her Alien Angel

Ghost? Or the love of your life?

I really liked this story. It was entertaining and enjoyable with a touch (just a tiny bit) of spookiness thrown in for good measure. The characters were interesting and likable for the most part. The two ghost hunters were harder for me to like but the way they helped Emma endeared them to me. Skog had been trapped by boundaries and the limitations that were put on him. Emma was determined to prove that her new property wasn’t haunted so that she could get it fixed up. To prove that she was right she decided to stay overnight. When Skog showed up, she wasn’t prepared and reacted before thinking. Once she calmed down she tried to communicate with him. They were immediately attracted to each other. As the days went by, Emma took steps to help her “ghost”. I loved Emma’s determination. Their happily ever after had me smiling. I wish that the story was longer so we could have seen their love develop but the instalove worked. I recommend reading this book.

Listening to the audiobook was really enjoyable as well. The narrators did a wonderful job of bringing the story and the characters to life. Both of their voices were pleasant to listen to, in my opinion. I recommend listening to this audiobook.

The latest Monster Bites from Michelle Mills does not disappoint. It is not a long story but the romantic in me loves the idea of two souls (haha souls) from different worlds - literally - finding each other when they need each other - one more than the other. Emma has been given the deed to Firebrook Castle as a joke - she wants to make the most of it but the residents of the surrounding city are so superstitious that they wont even step foot on the property, let alone be hired to fix the historic building to its past glory. To get to the bottom of it all Emma decides to stay a night in Firebrook Castle but she is shocked to find out the Red Soldier is real, and even more shocked to find out he is not a ghost at all. I loved this story, it was short, it was sweet, it was sexy and it was realistic enough to keep me rooting for the romantic happy ending. The writing flowed well and I didn’t find myself having to sustain disbelief as the story behind the Red Soldier’s circumstances was explained. This is a fast story though so don’t expect a lot of depth, but you do get a lot of sweet emotion and a great happy ending.

Michele Mills delivers another sweet, fun, and mysterious read in perfect time for the holiday. This story immediately launches you into the spooky, mysterious approach by our heroine up to the “haunted” castle, which I loved. (Don’t worry any scaredy-cat’s like me who never read thrillers, this is not that kind of story!)

I loved Emma and Skogg together right away. She is more practical minded than most visiting the castle, not letting her fears and superstitions sway her from her goals. He is a sweet, protective Hyrrokin - like we have come to expect from this authors other books.

I love how there are teasers to the other books, but this is definitely also a stand-alone. There are interesting glimpses into social and cultural environment on Salo between Gravians, Creekans, and Humans, for fans of this authors other books that reference these.

Without question this is a fun read, perfectly timed to release by Halloween. No cheating, no cliffhangers, HEA! Highly recommend!

A beauty and the beast retelling?
by LNovotasky

This is the second book of the series Monster bites and is in the same universe as Monsters love curvy girls too. I really enjoy this writer's stories. She keeps adding styles to the stories she writes that make them very interesting. This gives me a beauty and the beast vibe. In this story we meet Emma, a human from New Earth that is studying in Planet Solo. As a joke she gets this castle that is "hunted" and that no one wants. She decided to take possession of the castle, prove that it is not haunted, renovate it and turn it into some kind of inn for pilgrims to use before they start their journey into the holy mountains that are close by. Skogg is a Hyrrokin soldier and has been trapped in the castle for over a year after a scientist experiment goes wrong. I will not say much more but this is a fast pace and a really interesting story. Two thumbs up

Emma and Skogg

Emma is given the deed to an alleged haunted castle, but Emma? Emma doesn't believe in ghosts! Going into the castle she feels someone close by, something that is just out of range, and firewood in the bedroom? Waking up she discovers that she is not alone! Determined to find out the truth she is given an Hyrrokkin translator. Emma discovers he's not a ghost but someone who has been made no corporeal due to a science experiment gone wrong!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this engaging entertaining and compelling story! I just LOVE the characters! Emma is sweet and compassionate determined to help Skogg move on with his life if he wanted. Skogg had been alone after the accident and Emma was the only one that actually saw him! There's instalove steamy passionate scenes that will melt the kindle! Told from dual POVs reveals intimately their thoughts feelings and emotions as they explore their relationship. There's an epilogue and a HEA 💓

Emma, the human female lead, has been gifted a white elephant of a property “haunted” by a red devil ghost in a land where they are superstitious and terrified of such. Skogg, the alien male lead, is the “ghost” in question but he’s been rendered incorporeal by a malfunctioning piece of scientific equipment that killed the rest of his team and left him incorporeal most of the time with only the middle of the night as solid time. Emma works through the numerous issues surrounding the situation and they get to know each other.

This novella is dual POV, well written, and cute. It is set in the author’s previously established world with Hyrrokin and human history referenced. It does stand alone but will be enhanced by having read other works

What a sweet, quick story! While I liked Her Alien Priest better, this was a cute, perfect Halloween short story just in time for the October holiday. I absolutely love the Hyrrokin species (I always had a huge crush on Lord Darkness from Legend and think of him every time I read a ‘Monsters Love Curvy Girls’ book) and this was no different.

I also love how this one both loosely ties into the main MLCG series and also Her Alien Priest. Maybe in a future book, the two couples can become friends?

All in all, it’s got the Michele Mills staples: Hot alien men who love thick human women, loyal to a fault, and damn sexy to read about. This series is still a one click sell for me and this one is a great add to the series.

I love this shorter tale. Spooky and perfect! Emma has been left a property on the planet she is on and she is convinced it's a joke because it turns out to be castle, partly demolished and boasting it's own ghost. She is determined to see the possibilities so she decides to go there, stay the night and see what comes of it. Well, what comes of it is a startlingly handsome, rather wonderful smelling, Hyrrokin male who everyone else thought was a ghost. Not quite the truth but no one else stayed long enough to try to work out who he was or what happened. Skogg was caught in the explosion which was responsible for damaging the castle and it has affected his solidity. They need to find a way to make him whole and visible again. Can they solved the mystery together? It will take them getting acquainted with each other and maybe a bit more. Who could resist??

Emma doesn't believe in ghosts, so when she inherits a mansion that she's barely heard of, and that it's haunted, she knows that to make it her dream business opportunity, she'd have to dispell it's reputation. She decides to spend the night there and lo and behold, the "red soldier" appears to her. Skogg is floating around trying to get someone to help him and maybe Emma is the one. If only they could communicate. Even so, he feels attracted to her and hopes that she'll return, no one else has, but he feels she's different. Emma, at first is terrified when he appears, but still struggles to believe he's a ghost and is determined to help him even if then he won't feel the same about her. Another sweet novella. Loved it!

🔥
Spice/Plot Ratio: 5/95
Kinky: 0/5
Well written: 2/5

Plot:
Emma moves into an old Castle that is said to be haunted by a ghost. Quickly she discovers the “ghost” and starts to interact with him.

What I liked:
The idea of the story was cute. A “ghost” and a human who wants to save that being.

What I disliked:
The insta love is in generell not my favorite but that’s ok, what I really disliked was that it seemed extremely rushed with almost no real interaction between the two. Instead of the description of how he got to be a “ghost” for the 10th time I would have liked a real interaction that mirrors the deep connection they have.

Cheating? NO
OW/OM? NO
POV? Dual POV

I will admit, I liked Her Alien Priest a bit better. I was really looking forward to this one and it was enjoyable - but I felt like the story was too fast to really get to know the characters as much as I would have liked. Plus I feel like the heat could have been turned up just a bit more for these two. Maybe if we had a few more nights together? It just seemed like the timeline was too short. Emma inherits this castle as a joke but is determined to turn it around. Skogg has been trapped in the castle for a while and is looking for help. The connection is instant between them but once they start communicating, our HEA really happens fast. This was an enjoyable read right before Halloween.

Good

When Emma Lavigne is told that she has inherited a castle, she knows it’s a joke being played on the human; after all, the castle is said to be haunted.
Skogg Blackstone is a Hyrrokin, who is stuck at the castle. The victim of an unfortunate incident, he is partially phased out and can’t communicate with people.
Emma won’t let anything hold her back from her dreams, and on meeting Skogg, she is determined to save him!

This is a quick, and fun read, and although it’s a standalone story, it does have some links to the author’s full length novels set on the Hyrrokin home world.
It has a plucky and clever heroine, and a hero that has perfected the art of survival.
It’s an enjoyable read for sci-fi romance fans, perfect for whiling away an hour or two!

Human Emma Lavigne inherits Firebrook Castle as a joke because it is haunted by someone called the Red Soldier. Emma laughs at that and thinks it is utter rubbish until on her first night there she is awoken by a black-horned Hyrrokin soldier who is standing at the bottom of her bed. It becomes apparent that his name is Skogg and he is trapped there - he just needs someone to figure out how to help him (and Emma is the person to do it).

I enjoyed this novella which is a spin-off from the Monsters Love Curvy Girls series. Emma was a clever and sassy woman who seemed determined to help Skogg even before they became romantically involved. It was a nice story that made me smile. Easy to read and understand. Contains sexual content.

What a great Halloween treat. Perfect for an afternoon fun book.
Loved the chemistry between the two main characters, Emma and her demon/ghost guest Skogg.
Quick, entertaining story. For the length the worldbuilding was great. Loved the epilogue. and Uncle Barnabas.
A wonderful HEA.
Emma is a strong character , not backing down for the challenges of getting Skogg back to "normal". And Skogg, well what's not to like about a red skinned, black horned and spiked tail Hyrrokin.
I would recommend this short , sweet Halloween treat.

Her Alien Ghost by Michele Mills is A Monster Bites story that was delightfully spooky and charming! Emma and Skogg made my heart happy.

Emma is resilient, intelligent, cute, driven, and kind! Skogg is determined, caring, fascinating, and deliciously possessive, in the best possible way!

This story is fast paced, sweet, delivers a lot of lessons about trust and honesty and patience, and has just the right amount of steam, in all senses of the word! If you're looking for another great alien story with the big red guys that we all adore, Her Alien Ghost will hit the spot just right!

P. S. Hi Barnabas!

When Emma is given the deed to Firestone Castle, as a joke, she is determined to make the most out of it. She doesn’t believe in ghost or the Red Soldier. But when she wakes on her first night to find a satanic looking being at the foot of her bed, she has second thoughts. Skogg has been trapped in this castle for a year. He has been trying to get someone to help him but in his present form, he scares everyone away. Except when a tiny little human comes to the castle. She isn’t afraid of him at all, quite the opposite!

Why are this author’s books so strange? It’s almost like she writes in some sort of strange version of stream of consciousness. She has some pretty good ideas, but then doesn’t do anything with them or does only the most obvious thing. She also tends to be rather repetitive and on the same page will repeat the same piece of information three times. Some of her phrasing is also very odd. Due to the strange stream of consciousness writing style and odd dialogue I really wonder if this stuff is written by an algorithm of some sort perhaps a preteen, I just don’t know. This is the third or fourth book of hers that I read and to be honest I’m not reading anymore.
