The last girl went missing…
Someone doesn’t want her to be found.

When Sloane takes a job at the infamous whitewater rafting camp, Widow Falls, she quickly learns that the camp has a reputation for more than just summer fun.

People go missing at Widow Falls.

The guide she’s replacing was just one of many. As Sloane settles into her new home—a one-room apartment she’ll be sharing with the five other guides—she can’t help asking questions and digging into the disappearances she’s heard about. Her new roommates tell her stories of dark legends and dangerous folklore surrounding the secluded camp but assure her there’s nothing to worry about. It’s all just superstition.

When Sloane stumbles upon a clue and a secret message hidden beneath the floorboards of their loft, she begins to realize there may be more to the myths than she’s been told.

The message gets her attention: Don’t trust anyone at Widow Falls.

As she follows clues to better understand the missing guide she replaced, Sloane can’t help noticing the similarities between the two of them.

What happened to the other girl?
Why won’t the others help her search?
Are they all in danger?

Whatever’s happening at Widow Falls, it’s clear someone doesn’t want her digging into it. As the seams of her reality are torn apart, making her question everything she sees, feels, and believes, Sloane will have to uncover the truth about the camp—and its occupants—before someone else goes missing.

Because this time…it might be her.

So I randomly saw this book at my library the other day, and I thought why not give it a chance? I read The Arrangement by this author earlier this year, and even though I think that book is a little overhyped, I think this author has a writing style that is really easy to get into, and this is exactly what I needed right now.

I liked the atmosphere in this book, we follow a woman who’s taking a job at a secluded whitewater rafting camp! There’s all these rumors about the surrounding woods and how people have gone missing over the years, including the guide that she is replacing at the camp. I just really loved the camp vibes in this, I think it’s a perfect summer read.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the twist in this book. I have read this twist before so I wasn’t really surprised by it. However, I did really like the second twist and I didn’t see that coming, so at least there’s that. I think this main character could be a little naive and a little annoying at times, which definitely affected my rating of this book, but overall I had a fun time reading it, I read the whole book in two sittings because this authors writing style is so easy to read. I would definitely recommend this for people who are wanting to get into thrillers, I think this would be a fun one to start with.

Kiersten Modglin pens some of the most inventive thrillers out there. This one is no exception, I was engrossed throughout and surprised at a few of the twists. A couple I had seen coming, but there were also a couple that really shocked me.

Sloane takes a live-in job as a whitewater rafting guide at Widow Falls, a remote wilderness area. She got the job late in the season because Landry, the girl who held the position before her, left mid-season. All of the guides--three men and two women, live together in the upstairs portion of the lodge. Things seem to go decently well at first, but then Sloane discovers Landry's journal hidden below the floorboards and starts to wonder if things might not be what they seem on the surface. Are people hiding things, or is she imagining evil where none exists?

I liked the pacing of the story and as I listened to the audiobook the tension mounted with each minute that passed. I felt like some of Sloane's choices were a bit too frantic, a bit too melodramatic, a bit too hysterical sometimes. I also found the epilogue/ending to be super confusing.

However overall this is an exciting thriller that will keep readers intrigued and wondering what will happen next through all of the twists and turns.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

Sloane thinks she has landed the job of her dreams. Being a guide at a white water rafting camp, what’s not to like? When she finds out her predecessors have gone missing, she becomes obsessed with finding out the truth behind the mysterious Widow Falls. This is a fast paced thriller with twists and turns throughout. The final twist was totally unexpected. The narrator did a great job bringing the characters to life and added an extra layer of intrigue and suspense. A constant sense of foreboding kept the tension going until the shocking conclusion. Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for my audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Widow Fall kept my interest throughout! Loved how the author jumped right into it by saying that the main character wished she never had come to widow falls.

I wanted to love this but I just couldn’t.

The premise was great but the execution was a letdown.

First off, the characters were a problem for me. What might have been these huge emotional betrayals felt like nothing. I had no feelings for any of them and so when I found out things they were up to, it had zero impact. It was hard to believe any of the characters were out of their teens as well with the way they acted.

The whole plot stems on the ability to believe that in this tiny little nothing town, there exists a baddie who is so bad as to be untouchable. Yeah, okay. If anyone in this story, including Sloane, had any sense at all, there would be no story.

Another big disappointment was the lack of descriptions and scenes regarding the rafting trips themselves. The setting had nothing to do with anything. Sloane arrived, she had some training. The training involved a river and some rafts and some groups of people. There was a swimming hole. The water was deep. The rafts were patched and old. The vans needed new tires. It was non-descriptive and boring and nothing memorable at all happened on a rafting trip.

I suppose the one saving grace for me was the diary. In my opinion the diary chapters were the most interesting part of the whole thing.

Sloane goes to work as a guide at Widow Falls after graduation, but she soon realizes the place had more secrets than it appears...

I am conflicted about this book. I loved the build up, the tension ratcheting up. I enjoyed the character of Sloane, who like many a thriller protagonist is a somewhat unreliable narrator due to the anxiety and paranoia that has plagued her since her parents' death. She felt like a real person who did the best she could in the circumstances she was in.

On the other hand, I felt the explanation fell a little flat after all that excellent tension - it felt too prosaic, and there were some last minute twists I was ambivalent about.

I really liked the narrator though. She did a good job with Sloane's quavery emotions and voice, and her narration really lifted the story and enhanced the tension.

Overall, a very good read for the first three quarters, a good read for the denouement.

Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I'm left rather upset by this book. I absolutely loved it, until the last couple of chapters. It was a psychological thriller that kept me guessing all the way to the big reveal. I could not put this book down. But in a matter of several pages this went from a five star read to a three star.

The twists and turns that this book took were absolutely amazing. It kept me guessing, I didn't know what to expect. As i read, I couldn't decide if Sloane was having some form of mental break, or if there really was a missing girl. When the other characters messed with her, it had me second guessing every theory I had as well.

The reveal hit me hard. Never had I thought that was the direction this story was going to take. But the human trafficking twist pulled it right out of the limbo between ghost stories, murders, and possible mental illness. (Yes, all my theories lingered in one of these three categories at some point or another)

The whole time as a reader we were built up to believe Claudia was the bad guy and potentially behind it until we're told she's just an unwilling victim as well. She goes to help Sloane escape, and again this works for the story.

This is where the story should have ended. Maybe an epilogue with the human traffickers being caught. But no, that's not what happens.

Instead there is this whole six year skip with Claudia having assumed Sloane's identity, then another one month skip with the real Sloane coming out to take Claudia's identity? This made no sense and absolutely ruined the story as a whole.

As is typical Kiersten Modglin produced a fast paced thriller full of twists and turns. I loved the writing as usual and I especially loved the tone of the Landry’s journal chapters. I really liked the final twist at the very end although I found many of the earlier twists to not be as out of the blue as I normally find with this author’s books. I loved the narrator and thought she did a great job bringing the whole cast of characters to life. Sloane recently graduated from college and wanting one last grasp of freedom before figuring out what she wants to do with her life she lucks into a mid-season job as a river raft guide at Widow Falls. She lucked into the position because the girl before her, Landry, left mysteriously. She’s trying hard to fit into the group when she stumbles across Landry’s journal which starts with telling her she shouldn’t trust anyone at Widow Falls. I did find some of the motivations of various characters to not totally make sense at times and I felt like Sloane especially had no sense and missed obvious stuff all the time. Overall this one was 3.5 for me which I rounded up for star selection.

Sloane lands a new job at a very well known whitewater rafting camp called Widow Falls. She quickly realizes there is something strange about Widow Falls when she learns that the guide she is replacing has literally disappeared. When Sloane starts asking questions about the camp she learns that the camp has a mysterious past with a lot of spooky stories to tell. But Sloane is also informed that it is all just tall tales and not to worry. If that is true, what happened to the other guide? Sloane sets on a path to find out!

Another brilliant piece of work from expert thriller author, Kiersten Modglin. I really enjoyed this story and couldn’t put it down until I had solved the mystery. The writing was engaging and the twists and turns were totally unpredictable. If you haven’t read a book by Kiersten Modglin…what are you waiting for? WIDOW FALLS is certainly one of her best novels so far!

Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Sloan Marshall has accepted a position as a Guide at the Widow Falls Whitewater Rafting Camp.
Many of the Guides have been at the camp for years; however the Guide Sloan is replacing disappeared.
Additionally there seems to be a bit of a mystery with others going missing.
Sloan finds a note, saying “Do Not Trust anyone at Widow Falls.
Coworkers laugh it off.
This reads like a Teen/YA ~ nothing wrong with a good YA story. However, these characters are in their twenties and a few are older; they are so immature that I found myself rolling my eyes at their reactions as well as the games. However things get really interesting!!!

This is only my second Kiersten Modglin novel, my first was Just Married which was a WOW 5 Star read for me! That had a twist that I didn’t see coming; so I was sure there was going to be twists and turns in this story.
Aww Yes! Wait for it!!!

Want to thank NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this audiobook. This file has been made available to me before publication in an early form for an honest professional review.

"I don't believe in ghosts, of course. I'm not a kid anymore, but that doesn't mean I wanted to hear about them while in the woods with strangers. If the old widow did jump over the falls, it was probably because she got tired of listening to men talk. I know I do sometimes."~Landry's journal

I LIVE for this woman's books, so when I got the ARC in my e-mail earlier today, everything came to a screeching halt. This is her 27th book, and she still managed to surprise me with an ending that was a sucker punch to the gut.

WIDOW FALLS was the most atmospheric of all her books with a thread of unease that quickly wound around me. The town itself is the subject of folklore and true crime buffs because over the years, dozens of people have gone missing.

Sloane has no family and is intrigued by the opportunity to work as a rafting guide in Widow Falls. She's nervous about signing on mid-season and not fitting in with the group dynamic already established, and the shared lodging amplifies her status as an outsider. The first hint of trouble appears when it's mentioned she's replacing Landry, a guide who abruptly quit and left...or did she? When Sloane finds Landry's journal hidden in her sleeping quarters, she begins to suspect that Landry didn't quit. And in a scene right out of a Shirley Jackson short story, Sloane realizes it's not really paranoia if they ARE really out to get you.

The queen of twists threw one big timely one in this story...when the missing ones have no family, no real relationships with others, it's easy to chalk up their disappearance to a local ghost story about an angry widow...but sometimes the living are far more terrifying than the dead will ever be. Brace yourself, dear reader, for that final twist that only she can deliver. I came up out of my seat.

Ok WOW I could’ve never guessed where this one was going!! That’s one of my favorite things about KMod, not only does she publish like ten books a year each and every single one of them feels fresh and unique. I feel like that’s so rare from a thriller author but she manages to impress me with each new release.

This one had a great atmosphere, a secluded campground where not only is Sloane the new girl at her job, she knows nothing about the people she’s working AND living with and I loved that sense of not knowing who to trust. While I was reading I felt a little twitchy and jumpy myself so there’s definitely a strong sense of dread as you read. Definitely another page turner and like I said earlier, I had no idea how this would end and honestly that’s the best part of a good thriller for me.

I opened this book to read a couple chapters and “came to” 4hrs later….holy smokes this one will suck you in!

Widow Falls sounds like a fun place, a place to hang with friends, spend the day on the water and get a few thrills……as long as you’re not an employee and you don’t believe the old tales about the area.

This book shook me in more ways than one, this is very different than any other Kiersten Modglin thriller and I loved every second of it. Widow Falls shows a different side to her writing and her ability to captivate her audience.

Make sure your life vest is securely fastened before you start this book, you are in for a bumpy ride! The last chapter will leave you speechless.

Ugh The Ending Sucks

Don’t waste your time with this book. The story is gripping and engaging. The entire time you think something supernatural might be going on. But the ending totally ruins the entire story. The author tries to pull off some big surprise twist and it’s convoluted and groan worthy. It’s still fun to read but almost all of the story is fake in the end so you really feel like the author jerked you around. Sad

Sloane has taken a job at Widow Falls as a rapids guide needing a change after some painful events in her life. She’s a mid-season replacement to another guide, Landry, that went missing and the secrecy around her disappearance raises red flags. Odd living arrangements, shifty fellow guides and the missing girl’s journey makes Sloane suspicious of everyone’s motives. What happened to Landry and why is everyone so cagey about the circumstances? As Sloane reads more of Landry’s journal and compares it with the versions of “truth” given by her guide-mates, and things don’t add up.

I felt drawn in as if Sloane was telling her story directly to me, her discomfort in the living/working situation and immediate suspicions gave an edge to her story right away. Short, suspenseful chapters made it imperative to get through the story to find out what the heck was going on. I will say that after the buildup finding out what was going on was a bit of a letdown, and the ending was a little odd and confusing. Still, Widow Falls was a fast, entertaining listen.

I thought Jess Nahikian did a nice job conveying Sloane's distress and she did a wonderful job with both the male and female voices.

This is my second Kiersten Modglin book and while I didn’t really buy into this one as much as I did with Missing…I still thought it was a worthwhile listen…I mean, it was really short, so I didn’t waste much time on it. I have to say I like that about her books; she doesn’t waste time on frivolous things. I also like how she draws you into her stories with pure craziness that is deeply shrouded in mystery. I will listen to more of her books in the future.

Oh my goddddd this book was so annoying. I literally said that out loud at one point.

“If only I’d known then what I know now” times sixteen thousand. The other sentiment I heard repeatedly was “I just couldn’t”. Whyfor? No reason. Just couldn’t say this, just couldn’t do that. UGH.

The narrator was a total pill. The other narrator was a diary, and it was like “This is my super important diary for the police in case I go missing” and then it’s like “My crush didn’t like me back”. Very srs problems.

There’s so much I hate about this book, every character, every event, it’s all stupid. Even just the writing was bad. “She drank the burning liquid and it burned on the way down.” Oh yeah? The burning liquid was burning? Incredible.

The ending was so awful. Everything was so dumb and didn’t make sense. It was all so convoluted and terrible. This was like … Q anon level of ridiculousness. So that is the only audience I’d recommend this book for. No one else deserves this.

Happy PUB DAY 🎉
Excuse me while I forever obsess about this book!
Possibly one of the best I've read so far this year.
My favorite by the author.

This was a book that I never wanted to end. I could have read 1000 more pages of this amazing book. The cast of characters are fully flashed out and realistic as always, I found myself loving as Well as hating several characters. it's just overall shocking and freaking Awesome!!!! I cannot say much about this book without giving away to much of the book, but I felt it was a great book with mind-blowing twists I have read.

Another good one by K.Mod!

Widow Falls is an atmospheric thriller set at a camp, but not your usual kiddy summer camp. It's a white water rafting camp in Tennessee. That really excited me because I'm from East TN so I loved hearing about UT, Knoxville and of course Gatlinburg, our crown jewel(sorry, Nashville).

Sloane is fresh out of college and takes a summer job at this camp. Its name is steeped in local lore. Some people really come for sport, some come to sniff around like Scooby Doo because they like true crime or horror.

Sloane is nervous because the group already living here is tight-knit and she's the noob. She wants to fit in but immediately after arriving some of the staff are pretty rude and she stumbles upon a diary of the person whose place she took that causes her even more concern. Landry "disappeared" and that's all they're saying which isn't a good enough explanation for Sloane.

Who was Landry and why did she leave the diary? Is she out there waiting for her mystery to be solved or is she doomed to become another spooky story about Widow Falls?

This was published earlier but it reminded me a bit of Megan Miranda's latest novel "The Last To Vanish" which was good but I probably prefer this one.

“Everyone cares about fitting in, that’s the truth of it. Even the most self-assured person you know. The pretty. The popular. The loners. The ones who forge their own path. The ones who swear they don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks.”

Holy shit this is Kiersten Modglin’s best book that I’ve read yet!! It’s told in first person mainly from the POV of Sloane with some chapters mixed in that are from someone’s journal (nope not saying who because you have to read it!). The entire plot is extremely intriguing and captivating! I read this book as a buddy read with some friends on IG and it was absolutely perfect for that. We all loved the book and it created great discussion.

This book drew me in right away and I was hooked from page one. It was an absolute page turner that I did not want to and could not put down. I absolutely loved the characters (Sloane was the best) and also loved not knowing who to trust the entire time. The ending was absolutely brilliant. Definitely a great read that I recommend if you enjoy thrillers. Already can’t wait for KMod’s next book! I’m officially a fan 😍

Thank you to Kiersten Modglin for proving me with this eARC to read in exchange for an honest review. Keep writing girl 👏🏻

All I can say about this book is that it sounded way more interesting than it actually was. Maybe if Sloane was more of a likable character it would have been different but I don’t know since she wasn’t and it all was a bunch of boring nonsense for most of the book it just wasn’t great. I started this out in audiobook form to do an audiobook review however had the actual book not been out I would not have finished it because it was painfully boring. You could literally skip whole chapters and not miss anything. The story just wasn’t good the characters weren’t good and the ending was just bad. The narration was fine though. Honestly I don’t know how anyone at all liked this book that is the real mystery to me.

It’s not just a job for Sloane. She’s replacing someone that was a guide for an upcoming rafting trip. It doesn’t take her long to realize that there are a lot of rumors, perhaps myths, or folklore even, that are being spread about and she soon finds her self embroiled in an impossible situation.

One simple clue that includes a secret message begins a roller coaster of events that pull Sloane into a direction that she has no control over. One of the things that she wonders is who is it that she is replacing on this rafting trip? Why did that individual disappear and what is all the whispering and plotting that is going on every time she turns? Simply because Sloane wants answers does not mean that she’s going to get them. In fact, the more she pushes, the more danger she faces.

In this fast-paced story, the reader will be left guessing. Every time you think you have the answer, think again, because the tide literally turns quickly leading to a complicated web of activity, danger and suspense.

Many thanks to Kiersten Modglin and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

Widow Falls was awesome. Kiersten Modglin hasn’t disappointed me yet! Her novels just get better and better. Her talent for writing familiar, interesting dialogue just keeps me glued to the story. She skillfully pulls at me with her growing suspense and I’m all in until it ends. With few words she creates a complex thrilling outcome with fantastic mystery. I’m highly recommending this one who are fans of suspense-mystery.
Great job Kiersten! Please keep writing.

A suspenseful psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Who to trust? Who is telling the truth? Who is lying? What are the hidden secrets at Widow Falls? Can you survive when so many disappeared? This book is Kiersten at her best. Filled with twists, betrayals and what a surprise ending. You will never see it coming. Recommend.
