I had been assuming this was an anthology of fairy tale retellings because of the title, but it isn't the case: these aren't retellings but original short stories by twenty different authors in a wide range of genres from historical to fantasy, all with a theme of helpfulness and solidarity throughout all of them. My ARC copy doesn't specify whether this is a charity anthology that'll donate proceeds, but the collection is dedicated to one of the authors, Elena Shelest, who is Ukrainian, and there's a statement of purpose that this collection will bring joy and smiles to victims of war and violence, so I'd not be surprised if proceeds were to go to help Ukraine as other authors have done with their books. If such is the plan, I'd certainly buy a copy to help, and would encourage others to do the same.

All of the authors here are new to me, I had never heard of any of them before, save for Alice Ivinya, so the major selling point for me has been the opportunity to discover new writers. When it comes to fairy tale retellings and fairy tale-like fiction, I'm very adventurous, and it usually pays off. It's not been an exception this time, for I've found a few authors I'd definitely read future books from because they write and have styles that are my cuppa. For me, the most pleasant discoveries as well as my favourite stories in this collection were "Forged in Fire" by Marie Reed, "Darkbow" by Alex Stubblefield, "Prove Me Wrong" by Dani Hoots, "The Killer Countess" by Bettany Hoefflich, "Maiden of the Bone Marsh" by Susan Stradiotto, and "The Enchanted Feather" by Elena Shelest. None of the others are bad, either, so you're sure to find at the very least a couple of stories to like that don't have to be the same ones I enjoyed best.

I still wish so very dearly there had been one retelling of a fairy tale, because I can't help myself, but when I think of it, some of the stories do have a feel and atmosphere like in a traditional fairy tale, so I can't really complain. The ones I mentioned above, for example, do have that feel, and have lovely characterisation that tends to go the bright and happy or happy-ish ending route and is clean for the most part, a plus to those readers that like their Fantasy to veer away from dark and twisted, which isn't to say there aren't some that will be twisty here.

Thank you to the authors for the ARC via StoryOrigin in exchange for a review.

This is a collection of stories that will leave you wanting to read more these authors.

The first story I read in this collection was "Maiden of the Bone Marsh" by Susan Stradiotto, and it honestly blew me away!

The storyline of Maiden of the Bone Marsh follows a young man nearly ready to be considered a 'man', who begins having visions of a mysterious maiden with an owl on her shoulder. When those visions cross over into his waking reality, though, he must choose whether to follow the destiny he's striven for, or the mysterious maiden who beckons him day and night.

I walked away from Maiden of the Bone Marsh wanting to read more about the world, the characters, the mysterious curse the Maiden is striving for freedom from, and who the person is who cast it.

A solid 5-5. I look forward to reading more in this amazing set!

I'm super excited for this anthology!
The story I contributed is called SOULLESS.
The name I drew was Catlin Browneye - Wraith of the Northern Storms.

Ohhh, I had so much fun with it!

I've read most of the stories in this anthology and I just can't wait for you all to get to read them too!

I happen to love fairy tales and tales of the unusual. Therefore it is with the upmost joy I definitely recommend you get this anthology! These tales are about one wanting to be better, to make life better for another or even for themselves. They encompass that deepest longing in our souls to know who we are and to be brave enough to take the chance to find out regardless of what the consequence might be.

I believe readers of all ages will enjoy these stories. They are short but they speak to the heart and make you feel good and better for reading them. That in and of itself is reason enough to read this anthology. The added bonus is to know you are helping in a small way and adding your voice to the horrors the Ukrainians are living through right now and adding your hopes and prayers this unjustified assault on them by Russia will cease!

I have read some of these authors before but I was amazed at the depth and feeling of others I hadn’t read and the warm feeling I got from reading their stories. They make me want to resolve to be a better person to my neighbors and those I encounter. Change comes from within and if everyone makes that sincere effort to change for the better in their circle of influence, the feeling will hopefully spread and can’t help but have a positive effect on everyone it touches.

These stories will warm your heart and make you want to be better and when all is said and done isn’t that what really matters the most in life!

This is a collection of sort stories by various authors, so are very short others a little longer but all great reads.
Soulless is a great read about friendship and judging a person by their deeds not rumours.
Goddess of Smoke and Steel is my favourite, a fun little story about the complexities of people and emotions, I could see this being part of a bigger series.
Forged in Fire was a good read with a twist at the end.
In The Mist was a lovely story with a sweet ending.
Ghost of the Night Dolls was an interesting story, I wasn't sure where it was going at first but as the story progressed it became very touching and heart-rendering.
Salty Sweet appealed to me as I cook for a living and I really enjoyed it
Baroness of Blood and Bone is a short, blood-thirsty shifter story-enjoyed that one a lot too!
All of the stories are great reads and I enjoyed the whole collection.

I'm still working my way through all the stories, but so far I have read and loved:
Yumiko and the Battlefrog by Sky Sommers
Ocean's Crown by R.S. Williams
Soulless by Lynn Rush
The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest
Goddess of Smoke and Steel by Alice Ivinya

Each story is completely different from the next, some sweet and romantic, brimming with folklore and traditional details, others dark and bloody and full of humour. If you're a fantasy fan, you can't go wrong with this collection, and you'll definitely discover some new-to-you authors who might just become new favourites.

Wow, I don’t know where to begin! This is an amazing anthology of weird and wonderful stories and all in the name of charity! There really is something to suit everyone’s tastes in here, the stories are really diverse so they may not all be your cup of tea but there’s 20 stories so you can easily just skip to the next one!

In The Nick of Time.
The first story starts at the end with a cliffhanger to get you hooked straight away! It is set in the future in a time of war and weaves a tale of espionage and resistance. The tale is full of suspense which builds throughout the story and has a twist towards the end. I felt like I could continue reading this story and finding out what happens next!

Maiden of the Bone Marsh.
This story is told in 2 points of view, Seraphina and Kitchi and is a tale of fate and mystery with self realisation and a curse

Sultana of the Mist.
This next tale is full of curious characters. The story is kind of gritty but lovely, about love and a journey of self discovery all in the name of justice. With a twist at the end.

Yumiko and the Battle Frog.
This is story of revenge and some self discovery again. There is a twist in the middle, some magic boots and a comedy feel to it, it certainly made me chuckle!

Sever.
This story has a feel of The Discovery of Witches as it talks about the manipulation of soul threads and tapestries. Again there is a twist in the middle and some anguish and grief but with a nice ending!

The Enchanted Feather.
This is a lovely, delightful story full of compassion and love. With a Slavic tone, it starts with a trapper in the forest who gets into a tough situation but benefits from it in the end and meets a lovely girl. I love that the FMC is disabled, it’s written in a great way more hinting at her condition than just blurting out with it straight away. I would love if I could have the same event happen to me! This story is coming soon as a longer tale and there is a link to sign up for the author’s newsletter in anticipation.

There was one story I couldn’t get into although it is well written. A Lesson in Refinement is set around the Ton with royalty, peers and a dryad. There is also information about each author after their story including where to find their other books/website/social media etc as well as learning a little about them and their lives.

Obviously I have not reviewed each story in the anthology but all in all I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to any fantasy lover and any general book lover should try it too!

This anthology was an absolute joy to read. It's very difficult to pick out a favourite story because each of them is incredible in its own way, but I would definitely reread The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest. I loved the magical mystery aspect of it. I also enjoyed Goddess of Smoke and Steel because of how it delves into the complex emotions of people. Another story that I enjoyed is "Yumiko and the Battlefrog" by Sky Sommers. The story takes place in this world and the witty humour made it so much fun to read. I would definitely recommend this anthology to anyone who needs a bit of joy and magic in their lives, especially during these turbulent times.

There's such a great range of stories here that I can't imagine any reader wouldn't find at least one to love. I'm so happy I was allowed to be a part of something so great. I'll be reviewing all stories but my own.

Soulless by Lynn Rush: not much explanation about the wraiths (fitting backstories into short stories are hard!)but the story is interesting and I would love to read a full length version

Goddess of Smoke & Steel by Alice Ivinya: cat goddess of destruction makes sense if you think about it. I would read more of this one as well. I love the fanboy cinnamonroll librarian.

Forged in Fire by Marie Reed: hey it's me!

In the Mist by Jo Holloway: short & sweet. Looking forward to the new series that this is a part of.

Darkbow by Alex Stubblefield: entertaining witchy mystery. I love the world introduced here.

Haunt of the Night Dolls by Sarina Langer: cute yet creepy (or maybe the other way around?) story about a haunted forest. I loved it.

Salty Sweet by Bekah Berge: who would have thought a high fantasy cooking competition could be so funny and cute? I will forever have a picture of Chef Ramsay as a troll in my head because of this.

Baroness of Blood & Bone by Lyndsey Hall: this was an interesting story. Will learning the truth change Tullia's plan for revenge?

Sultana of the Deathly Stars by D.M. Taylor: Nessa comes into her own power after being abandoned by her father. I would read more set in this world. The magic is intriguing.

Twisted Destiny by M.S. Weaver: there is so much in this one! It's dark and haunting, yet sweet and romantic. I would read a whole series based on this.

Ocean's Crown by R.S. Williams: I love a good pirate story. Could read a whole series of this one too. Ella is sassy and fantastic.

Prove Me Wrong by Dani Hoots: I hope there will be more of this! Arian's journey is going to be a very interesting one.

The Killer Countess by Bethany Hoeflich: I love the taste of the magic system given in this one. Even though there isn't much space to give a lot of time to building each character, their personalities come through so well!

Yumiko's Revenge by Sky Sommers: nothing is what it seems. Especially battlefrog sidekicks. This was the story that started it all and I'm glad the frog made it to the final version.

Sever by Arielle Willow: this story gives every feeling! At first it's lighthearted and fun, then turns mysterious, haunting, and painful, and finally it's bright and hopeful. Such a great story.

The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest: such a sweet, heartbreakingly beautiful story. I'm excited to read more about these characters. I love them.

A Lesson in Refinement by Ashley Steffenson: this one twisted most unexpectedly and I'm glad there will be more! Adara's journey is far from over.

In the Nick of Time by C.C. Sullivan: Paris, resistance fighters, and steam punk. What's not to love?

Maiden of the Bone Marsh by Susan Stradiotto: the Maiden wants to break her curse. Short and sweet, but also mysterious.

Sultana of the Mist by N.D.T. Casale: Ria fights to prove her worth as the rightful leader. A beautiful story of strength.

Not only am I thrilled to be part of this amazing group of authors, and ecstatic to be supporting a wonderful charity like Book Aid International with all the profits, but I truly love so many of the stories included.

Yes, I did write one of the stories in this anthology, but this review is about the other 19!!!

They were all different. Different character arcs, different personalities, different settings, and wildly different emotions evoked by each!

From the darkness of the goddess who lives off strife and destruction, to the pure light of a healer who can tackle even the most corrupt souls, and every shade of light to morally dark gray characters in between.

I also discovered some new to me authors. A couple stories that stand out from that group - Sever by Arielle Willow, The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest, Forged in Fire by Marie Reed, and Twisted Destiny by MS Weaver. All of them tugged at my heartstrings.

First, two things I love about the concept of this collection of short stories: 1) All proceeds are being donated to charity in support of reading and literacy; and 2) The MCs names were drawn from a fairy tale name generator!

I read and thoroughly enjoyed 7 stories from the collection, and my overall rating is an aggregate of these 7 (I cannot comment on the others, and my rating does not include these stories). Please find reviews for the 7 below:

Goddess of Smoke and Steel by Alice Ivinya had really strong characterisation and from reading the short story I wanted to explore more of the world through this characters' PoV.

In the Mist by Jo Holloway grabbed me right away, presenting an intriguing world through a strong voice.

Darkbow: Death on Hollow Clouds by Alex Stubblefield had a strong sense of place and magic. I would read more about Darkbow and I thought he had great characterisation! However, I was surprised/disappointed to see the name of the Woods, which to my knowledge has derogatory racial connotations.

Ghost of the Night Dolls by Sarina Langer had an MC with a relatable voice and a really strong world, including much Adult Fear and an interesting conflict. It got me wanting to read more from this author!

The Killer Chronicles by Bethany Hoelflich had a humorous, intriguing voice in a fascinating world, although I would have wished for a bit more emotional connection with the MC.

Maiden of the Bone Marsh by Susan Stradiotto explored a dreamy, intriguing world, and the strong worldbuilding foundations came across very well.

The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest was perhaps my favourite, with its emphasis on rich Slavic fantasy and firebird mythology. I was very intrigued by the characters and will look out for more from this author.

I am grateful to the authors for providing an ARC of Once Upon a Name: Tales of the Strange and Unusual in return for an honest review. These opinions are my own.

I received an e-arc from the authors via Bookfunnel in exchange for an honest review.
This review is going to be short because I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but if any of this catches your interest I would highly recommend grabbing a copy. You get a book to read and support a good cause (win-win, and I was not paid to say this).
Soulless was an interesting twist on wraiths. It felt too short for me because I wanted to stay in the world and learn more about wraiths. 4/5

Forged in Fire had me laughing because she tried to achieve her goal but she never stopped to think of the repercussions. And the talking rabbit foot 😂 4/5

In the Mist made me smile because the lengths people will go to to keep travellers safe. I also loved Kelcy's stubbornness (it is relatable). 4.5/5

Ghost of the Night Dolls this gave me such Coraline vibes it's not even funny. 4/5

Goddess of Smoke and Steel by Alice Ivinya is a cute story, but it confused me because it didn't follow the format of the other stories and maybe it changes in the actual book, but it was just there. That's why it's also the one with the author's name because it deserves better. 4.5/5

Salty Sweet is one of those stories where its like you've read one of them then you've read all of them. It is a cooking competition (I'm sure you can figure out the rest of it if you've read one of them). 3/5

Baroness of Blood and Bone is intriguing. It's like a wolf motorbike gang (that's the best way to describe it). 4/5

It was fun reading these stories and some of the names 🤣

This anthology is full of little gems. My favorite story was the one that surprised me the most and made me think about redemption and second chances: Sever by Arielle Willow. The twists were absolutely unexpected and brilliant.

So many other sweet stories in here and a couple of haunting ones too. If you're looking for romance, In the Mist by Jo Holloway, Sultana of the Deathly Stars by D.M. Taylor, Twisted Destiny by MS Weaver, The Enchanted Feather by Elena Shelest, and a little in In the Nick of Time by CC Sullivan.

Some amazing talent in this work, and it's 100% for charity. Definitely recommend people pick this one up!

I received a eARC as I was following Jo Holloway and the Immortal Voices series. I received a free copy to give an honest and free review.

Normally I'm not a huge fan of short stories, I usually prefer larger series. This book changed my mind. The stories were well written and each story had me looking for more. I'll be following the authors of the stories for more of their work.

Unfortunately the reviews will be short as I don't want to give any spoilers.

I got a kick out of the Sweet and Salty, my nephew is big into baking competition tv shows so I think he'll love the twist.

The Enchanted feather was a great story about a true hearts desire.

Really enjoyed Yumiko and the Battlefrog, I haven't read a lot of Urban fantasy and this story was an excellent introduction into it.

Sultana of the Mist follows a widowed Sultana who fights for her people so they can lead happy lives.

The Killer Countess was an excellent story of judging people not by their actions but by things they cannot control.

Twisted Destiny was a story between human and fae. Definitely had me wanting for more.

In the Mist was a great teaser for the upcoming series and can't wait until it comes out.

I enjoyed all the stories and look forward to seeing other works of the authors. I definitely recommend this book.

This anthology is SOOO good. I enjoyed every one of the stories I read and can't say enough how good they are!! Just a few I'll touch on. I hope many of these make it to bigger story lines.

Souless by Lynn Rush - This one was 5 stars and awesome. What a neat story idea and unique.

Goddess of Smoke and Stell by Alice Ivinya - 5 stars and SO darm cute and funny. This one was fun to read and giggle along with our goddess and how it ends, yas!

Forged in Fire by Marie Reed - 5 star again, this one gives you a lesson or 2 in such a short story!

In the Mist by Jo Holloway - This one was a fun read, definitely 5 stars. Little mysterious component to it, but also sweet and touching

Darkbow: Death on Hollow Clouds by Alex Stubblefield - 5 star story with witches, some action, but also reminds us, not every story has a HEA (happily ever after) for everyone.

If you are looking for a short fantasy collection of stories that supports a good cause, you've found it. "Once Upon a Name" is a quick, easy, read that showcased some unique works of fantasy. I particularly enjoyed "Goddess of Smoke and Steel", which made me laugh. "In the Mist" was a fun twist and a good character. And "Soulless" left me wanting to know more about the creatures and the world they inhabit.

Unfortunately I didn't receive the entire anthology for some reason with my ARC, but I will be buying it as soon as I'm done with this review so I can continue to enjoy other new authors and see how their imagination contributed to this heartwarming anthology.

Give it a try and discover some talented people as they share stories that are all about taking chances, helping others, and supporting something worthwhile.

What a novel concept!

This is an anthology of short stories that fantasy readers will embrace. I love reading how the authors came up with their stories simply because they were given a name to base their tale upon. The stories move fast and are fantastical, eventful, fun and clean. Good reading for a variety of ages who enjoy this genre. Most of the stories are about personal growth so there are even lessons to be learned.

I didn't encounter any stories I didn't like although there were a couple I enjoyed more than others. My favourite story in the bunch was Soulless by Lynn Rush, I think the setting made readers embrace the characters and I really enjoyed the overall flow. I felt like I could visualize what was happening.

I received an advanced copy of this book through BookSprout and am leaving a voluntary honest review.

Overall Rating 3.5 Stars.

This is a fun anthology that twists different tales and introduced me to some new indie authors.

Some of my favorite stories were Ghost of the Night Dolls by Sarina Langer, Salty Sweet by Bekah Berge and Baroness of Blood and Bone.

All ratings lower than 4 were due to the story feeling incomplete. A good novella is hard to write. But I do prefer a beginning middle and end.

If you like fairytales and want to try out some new authors then def pick this up.

I haven’t read all the stories in this fantasy and fairytale retelling short story collection, so I’ll base this review on the stories I have read, including ‘Yumiko and the Battlefrog’ which is set in this world, fun due to its dry humour, fast action, and characters that readers of Sky Sommers might recognise intermixed with new, kickass characters and villains.

I’ll probably do a revised review based on the rest of this collection soon.

This is a fabulous collection of short fantasy stories. I thoroughly enjoyed them. This anthology is well edited and although the stories are really short, they were all very enjoyable. My favourite in this collection was the story by MS Weaver. The forbidden love trope was done to perfection.

There's also a huge range of different subgenres represented in this book, so I can highly recommend it because there really is something for everyone here.
