After the crowning of Robert the Bruce, Sir James Douglas is sent to the Scottish borders to wreak havoc on those loyal to Edward of England. But his plans go wildly astray when Lady Ailish Maxwell’s brother is captured by her traitorous uncle. James has every intention of finding the lad, but when Her Ladyship announces she’s joining the quest, he’s not about to let her go, no matter how beautiful her crystal eyes, or convincing her silver tongue.

And Ailish will not sit idle while her brother, the true heir to the Maxwell dynasty, is taken deeper into the enemy’s lair. After putting forth every ounce of reasoning she can muster, Sir James agrees to allow her to pose as his wife. But what she doesn’t count on is falling in love with the braw Highlander. And as they ride farther into enemy lands, they cannot ignore the intensity of the passion simmering between them—though it could very well ruin everything they have worked so hard to preserve.

3.5 an enjoyable historical, bloodthirsty romp, but I found keeping track of who was on whose side was beyond me so I was a bit lost there. The author did her best with an explanation of the historical context up front but I’m awful for muddling character names and places. I was also grateful I could look up some of the terms used to describe certain archaic articles of clothing or weapons which also lost me a bit. The romance side was really good though with some lingering, slow burn tension and smouldering scenes which is what kept me enthralled.

Complete story, part of a series available on ku. I would be up for reading more from this author, it felt authentic to the period but yet still deliciously smutty 😍

Highland Warlord by Amy Jarecki
The King’s Outlaws #1

What is better than having just finished a great story?
Knowing that it is the first in a series with more great stories to look forward to!

In 1306, when we meet James Douglas and Ailish Maxwell, Scotland is in the midst of turbulent times. Conflict is frequent with murder, rape, pillaging and more occurring across the border between England and Scotland. King Edward is working hard to subjugate Scotland and assert sovereignty over it. Some Scottish believed that the King of Scotland should be Scottish while others, for one reason or another, were on the side of Edward and having England in charge. James and Ailish have come to the inauguration of Robert the Bruce with plans to swear fealty to him and after doing so their story truly begins.

What I liked:
* Knowing that the story is set in history with some of the characters once real people and their biographies known.
* James Douglas: a young man, warrior, intelligent, caring and intriguing. He is interesting, in more ways than one, and perfect for Ailish.
* Ailisih: a young woman seeking to keep her brother’s birthright. She is resilient, determined, stubborn, independent, and sometimes chooses to go against what she has been told might be the safer course to follow. She is perfect for James.
* Robert the Bruce: from what I saw of him he seems a man who wants the best for Scotland
* Watching the relationship develop between James and Ailish
* That Ailish didn’t get away with her not so wise idea(s)
* That though James was a great warrior he could still suffer injuries
* The men with James
* What I saw of Ailish’s siblings and her lady’s maid
* Knowing that there is a book two to look forward to
* Wondering if Robert Boyd will star in a book of his own – will he be next?

What I did not like:
* Being reminded of how cruel conquerors were to those they invaded the lands of.
* Having to wait for book two

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Definitely!

Thank you to the author for the ARC – This is my honest review.

4.5 stars, rounded up

James Douglas, son of the Lord of Douglas meets Robert the Bruce on his way to Scone to be crowned. He pledges his fealty and hopes to right the wrongs against his father and retake his lands from the English. After he is crowned, the Bruce knights James, who saves his life and earns the Bruce’s trust.

Lady Ailish Maxwell is the daughter of the murdered Earl of Caerlaverock and sister to the true earl – her uncle Herbert sided with the English and claimed the earldom, Ailish and her younger siblings, Florrie and Harris have been in hiding for the last 6 years, but she has come to swear fealty on Harris’ behalf, as the boy is only nine. The Bruce acknowledges Harris’ claim to the earldom and promises Ailish that he will see her brother reinstated. He is concerned for her safety and tells her he will provide an escort back to the nunnery for her and her maid.

James is tasked with raising an army for the Bruce, but on the way to the border, the Bruce asks him to escort Ailish back. Ailish is stunned by James, he literally takes her breath away, and James is just as affected. But sadly, they live in a time of war and uncertainty, with no time for romance. After an eventful return trip including a passionate kiss, Ailish is sad to see him leave, knowing their paths may never cross again. James too wishes things could be different, but his pledge to the Bruce and Scotland must come first.

Weeks later, Ailish’s uncle abducts Harris and Ailish seeks out James for help. James has been busy, he has razed his father’s keep, killed the English lord who was residing there and raised an army to fight for the Bruce, he has also cultivated a reputation and the English are calling him the Black Douglas. He is shocked to see Ailish again, but immediately offers to help her find Harris. And what an adventure it is!!!

I wasn’t sure I was going to like this story; I am always a little skeptical about fictional books that feature true historical characters as leads, but Ms. Jarecki nailed this story. She was able to seamlessly blend fact with fiction to create a riveting story, filled with adventure, betrayal, abductions, action, passion, heartache, defeat and finally a very sweet HEA. This is the first book in a new series and now I am looking forward to reading more installments. I really enjoyed this book and I am happy to recommend it.

Another amazing story by Amy Jarecki!! I have not read a book by this author that I didn’t love, her stories take you back in time and always lead me on wide internet research about the history of Scotland. This story features the famous and highly feared, James the Black Douglas, and I can’t help but hope the true James had his very own Ailish to love.

If you ever want to read an amazing story featuring highland warriors just pick up any of this authors work!

If the book synopsis appeals to you, my fellow Scottish romance book loving friends, I have a verra strong feeling you will likely enjoy this first book of a brand new series by the talented Amy Jarecki. You pretty much get exactly what is promised there. Instant at first glance attraction grows into a budding romance which blooms into much more. Intermixed with danger and drama of the Scottish vs English feud of that time period, all while the “thinks their love will be forbidden” main couple dance around each other until their true feelings will now longer be denied.

Ailish and James, the main couple steadfastly loyal to Robert the Bruce, repeatedly find themselves thrown together by fate and circumstances, as they tackle head on what must be done to rescue family and lands from their shared enemy’s hands. James was always the carefully calculating, weighing all the risks yet quick to jump into action hero, while Ailish had me a time or two thinking this lass would have been better off just doing what she was told. One impulsive decision in particular backfired in a big way. Of course, you could argue if she hadn't had gumption to begin with she might not have had the courage to make the trip resulting in her meeting her hero.

It all plays out at a pace that is easy to keep up with. I was actually quite surprised by the no nonsense, let’s just get right to it, romance wrap-up conclusion. It’s up to you how much detail you need or choose to absorb regarding the heavily charged politics and war driven violence of the era. As someone who reads for romance only, I can still appreciate the effort that goes into all the historical details this author weaves into her romantic tales. It’s done in such a way it is not overwhelming, too.

I got to say this is the first time I actually remember reading a romance featuring this particular famous character. This author gave heart to a man often portrayed as black hearted and ruthless.

I do know that I will keep coming back to her for more romantic tales and adventures, as she is one of my verra favorite writers in this genre.

Title: Highland Warlord, Series: The King’s Outlaws (Book 1), Author: Amy Jarecki, Pages: 261, pub date: 8/11/20, stand-alone but part of a series, accurate synopsis, instant attraction, eventually some very graphic smex scenes, lots of interwoven period historical facts/mention of characters, some violence, virgin heroine, no OW/OM drama, celibate during separations, noble birth heroine.

(I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I was not given any payment or compensation for this review. There is no affiliation or relationship between this reviewer and the author, publisher, or PR firm.)

Highland Warlord is the first book in The King's Outlaws series by Amy Jarecki.

The blurb about this book will tell you all you need to know about the plot so I don't need to go over any of that. What I do want to say is how much I love the fact that by reading this story I have learned so many historical facts about that time. I felt educated and entertained! The author explains at the end of the book where she used artistic licence so don't worry she hasn't re-written history haha!

Ailish and James' characters were fabulous. James is a proud Highlander, whose loyalty and honour knows no bounds. I love how he protected Ailish and made her feel safe even before their romance blossomed. Ailish at times made me just shake my head because she just would not listen to reason and found herself in dire circumstances because of it. Lucky for her she had James to be her hero. Despite being there for her, he always made sure his loyalty to Robert the Bruce was true.

The passionate scenes between James and Ailish were so beautiful, especially when lust started to turn into love. A love that by all rights was destined not to be, not with her being a Lady and him just being a knight with no land or holdings. The battles were written superbly and kept me on the edge of my seat and when on occasion characters in the book were killed I couldn't help but shed a tear. A book that can make me run the gamut of emotions like this one does will always earn a top rating from me.

I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next in the series!

You can count on being surrounded by a story and pulled back in history when you read a story by Amy Jarecki. A must read author, her imagination with fabulous braw highlanders and the women who win their heart, are the stories of dreams.
Throw in loyalty to Robert the Bruce and the times of strife during this period of time, James Douglas and Lady Ailish are thrown together when least expected and the adventure begins.
Absolutely loved every word and could not put it down until the end!

One thing you can count on with this author is a true event in history with a smidgen of a missing fact where she'll inject her romance. Truth is, I never know exactly what part of the story is fiction until I read her notes at the very end. Which I highly recommend you do.

History writes admirably about the Black Douglas and this story brings him to life. He burnt down his own castle to rid the English of what was rightfully his....giving his his nickname. I also wondered if that may have been where the Scots got their idea to burn their crops before the English arrived so they couldn't take it to feed their army. But this is not history, only my assumption.

Both the Black Douglas and Ailish Maxwell had lost their land and family to the English so I thought they were perfect together fighting for the same cause. There are many hurdles and heartaches for them to undergo before they learn to trust one another.

MY FAVORITE LINE IN THIS BOOK: Time slowed as Douglas looked her way, his eyes boring through her as if he were indeed gifted the honed sight of a falcon.

Great read, highly recommend it. Especially if you love history, do not pass this one up. I was gifted with an arc before its release and cannot wait until others read this story.

I love when an author thoroughly researches history as Amy Jarecki does. Her stories are filled with historical tidbits that always captures my full interest. Anything to do with Robert the Bruce leaves me fascinated and how I wish I could have met him!!

Sir James Douglas was an actual person who fought alongside Robert the Bruce and the author has used her imagination to give him a love story that will melt your heart. I loved Ailish's character, she's such a strong and loyal lady who will do anything to save her brother. She and James share a passion that will be put to the test while the Scottish fight for their freedom from the English.

Very well written and once I started reading, I had a hard time putting the book down!

Ailish Maxwell has been in hiding from their uncle who has taken over her brother Harris’s birthright, he’s the true Maxwell heir. She travels to declare her allegiance to Robert the Bruce and encounters Sir James Douglas aka the Black Douglas, at the coronation ceremony. Sir James is tasked with returning her to the abbot where they’ve been in hiding when they find out her brother has been kidnapped and now they’re on a rescue mission. I’ve always loved Scottish heroes and Black Douglas has been one of my favorites. He comes to life in this early story of his being knights by Robert the Bruce and retaking his home and fighting for a free Scotland. These two are perfect together she’s a strong independent woman who stand up to James whether he likes it or not, and most of the time he doesn’t, but he respects her for it too. I know you’ll enjoy this captivating adventure as these two fight for Scotland, Robert the Bruce, freedom and they discover love along the way. An excellent story I voluntarily read and wrote this review.

Highland Warlord
The Kings Outlaws #1
Amy Jarecki
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sir James Douglas has just saved his kings life right after being crowned Robert the Bruce. He's now been sent to the Scottish borders to show those who are aiding the English king that it will not be tolerated. But his plans go totally astray when Lady Ailish Maxwell's young brother is kidnapped by her traitorous uncle. James has every intention of finding the young lad, but when Ailish announces that she will be joining the quest, he is not going to let her go, no matter how beautiful she is. Or how sweet her siren's song is sung.

Ailish Maxwell has decided that she can't just sit there while her brother, the true heir is being taken further and further away from her. Now she has given James every reason she can possibly think of to let her come along when he agrees against his better judgment to let her come along posing as his wife. The thing she didn't count on was falling head over heels in love with the big Highlander. As they ride farther into enemy lands, they can't ignore the passion that is simmering between them even though it could very well ruin everything they have worked so hard to preserve.

Amy Jarecki nails it with the start of this amazing new series. Stories just don't get better then this. It had me from the get go and didn't let me go until the last word was read. These two main characters were perfect for eachother. James 'the Black' Douglas was everthing I thought he would be and more. Ailish was incredible. Sweet yet spicy and she let you know if you over stepped your bounds. This was one woman who was hell bent on getting things done her way. You could not have found a better woman for James. They had pure unbridled passion in the beginning that turned into an all consuming love affair that just got more passionate with time. Ms. Jarecki you have kicked this new series off with the perfect story and I truly can't wait for the rest of the books.

The Black Douglas in history was larger than life. Amy Jarecki has given us his heart in her take of what could have been given the facts that we know of his life. She has a gift of making what if, and bringing history to life. This story is one of her best.

Sir James Douglas was a hero, saving King Robert The Bruce's life the moment after James was knighted and Robert was crowned king. He was the Bruce's warlord, but who was James' wife? She had to be a strong woman to stand beside this larger than life man. Amy gives us Lady Ailish Maxwell who is all that and more. I loved this woman who saved her family from their traitorous and vile Uncle Herbert. She was loyal to Scotland and her brother, traveling alone from their sanctuary abbey hideaway to the coronation of the king. She was there to make sure Harris was recognized as Earl of Caerlaverock over Herbert who seized the seat being loyal to King Edward. Over and over again in this book she shows her bravery and courage that James cannot ignore. James is so focused on regaining his border lands from the English and fighting for his King he forgets to take care of his heart and give into his love for Ailish. Finally in a lul of hostilities the Bruce makes him see there is time for love in the midst of war.

James Douglas has lost everything to the English. Pledging himself to Robert the Bruce James is sent on a mission to escort Lady Ailish back to the safety of the monastery where she has been hiding her young brother the future Earl from her uncle who wants him dead. When things go terribly wrong and Ailish’s brother is captured, James vows to Ailish to return him to her.

Not one to wait Ailish decides to follow James to his camp to help find her brother. In order to travel to enemy lands James allows Ailish to pose as his wife, what James doesn’t count on is falling for the beautiful Ailish. When Ailish gets captured and thrown into the tower James has to devise a plan to save her. Both James and Ailish know during these unsettled times their can be nothing between them. I loved this story! I loved James and Ailish! A true love story. Amy Jaracki has outdone herself! Definitely a must read!

I love Amy's writing and this one was no exception! They history interspersed with the fierce love and passion makes for a wonderful read. And for the start to a new series all I can say is I can't wait for more. The settings are brought to life, the danger and battles and heartwrenching and the fight for love is just as emotional.
James and Ailish had their problems from the beginning. Snd it looked like everything was destined to keep them apart. But nothing can stop a highlander from getting what he wants, or keeping him from her. Love this story!! Great great start to this series!

Wonderful

This story walks you into intrigue, war and love. You can feel the tension and stress of the attraction between Sir James and Ailish in the first few pages and it just continues to build throughout the book.

Ms. Jarecki has done it again with a story that grips you and doesn't let go until the last word. Totally awesome descriptions and makes you "see" the places you will be taken.

Scotland 1306
James Douglas, known as the Black Douglas for his dark hair, has come to pledge his sword to Robert the Bruce. As his lands and birthright was given away by a foreign King. Now he wants it back but he knows he has to show the true King of Scotland, Robert the Bruce his loyalty, honor and respect. He had been apprentice to Bishop Lamberton who had shown him how to defend himself, but also knows he needs the Bruce to ever get his birthright back. Then during his coronation while James has just been knighted, an assassin made an attempt to sever Robert the Bruce’s head from his body! James acted quickly and bravely and saved the King. The King quickly honored his new knight with the job of guarding his King as his man-at-arms during all the coronation festivities. He also wants him to put an army together but first he has a special order to guard a female guest and bring her to a nunnery. Of course James doesn’t realize it’s the bonny Lass that had been holding his attention.

Lady Ailish Maxwell felt she has to appear at the coronation to show the King fealty from her clan. A Lass whose evil Uncle has murdered her father and takes her brothers place as Earl of Caerlaverock and chieftain to the Maxwell clan. Plus he has joined the English King, Edward Longshanks, the hammer of the Scots to sack their home when they murdered her innocent father. Yet her young brother is only nine summers and she fears all their lives are at stake. Plus she makes her father a promise that she would protect her brother with her life no matter what. They have been hiding in a nunnery for protection. Yet she is even more shocked that King Robert wants to make a match for her and find her a husband. Of course it would be a good alliance for him and her clan. She meets her escort to take her back to the nunnery and is surprised it is Sir James Douglas.

This is when the attraction between James and Ailish begins, yet they both have their own set of problems. Plus her brother is abducted and this is when Ailish finds James to ask for help. As she feels her Uncle will murder her brother, but she falls harder for James as he for her. Yet she won’t follow his rules and finds trouble every time she disobeys his orders. What is worse for James he has nothing to offer Lady Ailish not even a home! Yet he wishes he could wake up to her Bonny smile everyday.

Will her brother ever become the true Earl of Caerlaverock or is he even alive? Will James be forced to see the woman he loves marry another. What will the future hold for all of them. Will Sir James and Lady Ailish end up with shattered hearts with only memories to hold onto? Read and find out!

A phenomenal start to a brand new series by Amy Jarecki. Both Robert the Bruce and his warrior Sir James Douglas . On a personal note Robert the Bruce is one of my favorite heroes in Scottish history so I was ecstatic by this novel! Scottish historical readers will absolutely love this story from start to finish.

A book that has all the elements historical romance readers love! It will fill your heart with sadness too especially for the people who know Scotland’s history. The settings will knock your socks off! The multi-dimensional characters are totally brilliant, magnificent dialogue and the plotting will make you gasp and your pulse race, not knowing what to expect next!

This is a book historical romance readers and Scotland lovers do not want to miss!

So many different emotions concerning the h. She was very caring and loyal on one hand, then the other she was impulsive and put others at risk more than once. Granted one of her decisions caused her to meet the H, so that was a plus.

The h is responsible for two younger siblings and is living with nuns for protection. Of course, not all runs smoothly and she starts on her journey to find the H to help her with something (no spoiler's).

The H hasn't had an easy life either. He feels he needs to make a name for himself and seeks out Robert the Bruce. It was enjoyable to read some of the antics of this famous Scottish hero./King -Bruce. But, if you know even some of his life, it wasn't an easy road and fraught with much heartache. Some of that is experienced in this story.

You are treated to much suspense, violence, romance that builds slowly, tragedy, deaths, and a young brother who brings a lightheartedness to the story.

There is lovemaking, outside of marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and described a few times.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and spice. The story for me felt it ended abruptly. Yes, we get our HEA for the couple, but how much longer were they apart fighting for independence? Did they ever make it back to his home? I wanted a bigger bow to tidy up everything - lol. (ljb)

I’ve always tended to romanticize stories about the Black Douglas. This one was especially well done in the audiobook form which I listened to before reading the book. I always like books that are based on actual characters and or time periods. Of course authors take some liberties to tell their tales, that’s to be expected. This was a riveting tale during the period of Robert the Bruce. James Douglass and Ailish have quite a journey as they find their easy to each other. We’ll done. I’m happy this is a series and look forward to reading other books!
