"I'll do meowmy best to make it happen." ᓚᘏᗢ

What a gorgeous way to start the reading year! Squidgy, squishy happiness. Like a jam roll that leaves your fingers sticky, and your tum happy.

It's come to that time where Mr.Kanda needs to make a serious life changing decision. After much soul searching and research, he decides to go ahead. His beloved cat Fukumuru will go to the vet to have "his cherries pickled!".

Such a delightfully quirky way to talk about being neutered. I will never look at cherries the same way again 🍒 (and it's cherry season here).

There's mention of a stinky durian, a clockwork mousie toy, kitty antics and the nerves of a first date.

This is such a beautiful story of love, companionship and hope. Anyone who has any pet (not only a feline) will know they're the meaning of unconditional love.

It's also about something as easy - and equally hard - as letting your guard down, and allowing yourself to lean on others. To let them into your life.

"No matter what anyone says, you are precious."

Book 3 in the story of Mr.Kanda & his puffball of feline delight, Fukumaru. The storyline is deceptively simple, yet deep. The illustrations! Gorgeous. A paw-sitive book to kick off 2022 with.

This is, hands down, the single most heart-warming series I am currently reading. There are sad moments, but it's ultimately about the bond between person and animal, and it is incredibly relatable in that.

Nothing quite compares to the heartwarming goodness of this series.

With more backstory on the characters, some deeper emotions, and a dramatic ending, vol. 3 continues to expand the world and stories of the series.

Plus plenty of ridiculously adorable cat expressions.

I love this series SO MUCH. It’s so cheerful and adorable. It does feel sad sometimes because this lovely, older man’s wife has passed, but Fukumaru is always there for him. And the rivalry between him and his best friend who owns a dog…Ahhhh, now I have to go cuddle with my puppy!!

As I said in my review of Volume 1, this is where more of a storyline is starting to develop. Without major spoilers, we find out how the protagonist went from being a internationally traveling concert pianist to teaching kids in a garden-variety music school. Note that psychological trauma is discussed and reactions to trauma are shown. Also, a plotline begins about a musician rivalry. But this is still a calm, bittersweet series with plenty of Cat Content.

(I think it is actually huge that it talks about mental health and trauma wrt an older man protagonist in an everyday setting, and in an understanding way. I keep on finding newer manga with much disability relevance that is not marketed that way at all, please also see Witch Hat Atelier.)

I feel like there is also an increasing amount of gay tension, one of the male characters has a crush on the protagonist, and there's more of that possibility with another character as well; but I don't know if it will actually develop into anything.

Now is my turn to beg the library to buy more, I suppose :)

After last volume's extreme focus on cutesy cat antics I was ready to drop this series. But this time around the author course corrects and changes up the storytelling format to amp up the human drama. Panic attacks and a professional rival suddenly draw me back into the series, and now I want to read the next volume.

Kanda and Fukumaru love and adore each other. Meowy heart just melts for them. Fokumaru is an adorable roly-poly bundle of fur. He was runt of the litter. Imagine that being neutered meant that he got his cherries picked. I was laughing and smiling at this cat’s antics. Kanda teaches but used to be a concert pianist. Kanda’s best friend loves dogs. A student is an awe of Kanda. Pianist Kanade was jealous in his rivalry and strove to surpass Kanda and appears to be adopting his own feline companion. I am rooting for them. All kitties need homes. 4.5 cat-notch stars.

I feel all the emotions with this wholesome manga. I love my cats and though they’re not as lovely and round as Fukumaru, I adore them just as much as Kanda does with him.

In this volume we see a bit of Kanda’s past and how and why he stopped playing the piano, the thing that he was so good at for the most part of his life.

With his wife gone, we see him struggle with loss and yet, Fukumaru, just like Kanda’s friend, are trying to lift some of the weight off his shoulders. I think their friendship and familiarity are on point and they made me tear up a bit.

Also, we see a beautiful and emotional scene with Fukumaru, his siblings and his mother, who promises she will always love them no matter what. And just remembering that scene makes me want to cry a bit. I hope they all could find places they could feel at home too.

Last but not least, we got introduced to a new character who’s gonna be the owner of a cat who looks like one of Fukumaru’s sister.

The pacing, and to a lesser extent the art, changes a bit as Sakurai gets accustomed to magazine (vs. internet) serialization. There's actually something like plotting going on over and above "grown men squeeing about pets," though, don't get me wrong, there's still a bunch of that. :D

A storyline featuring Moriyama, and a rival pianist for Kanda--though Kanda himself may not be aware of the rivalry--tells us why Kanda no longer plays professionally. The story will also potentially . Quite a melancholy feeling to the end of this one. We, and the author, know that not all real-life cats have happy endings...

We get to dig deeper into Kanda and his cat's past. I'm interested in where this story is actually starting to go but I'm still in it for the cute kitties!!

I know I have said this before, but this story is so lovely! You could think after 3 volumes it would end up in a similar formula as the previous installments, however, with different point of view through the chapters, many small chapters showing Fukumaru and Kanda's adventures, the introduction of new characters and the narration of many moments of these characters pasts, "A man and his cat" is a manga series that still has a lot to show. I especially liked that fact that it shows more of Kanda's story and personality (while not taking away time from his life with Fukumaru!), as well as his struggles. I really enjoyed the fact that this volume showed a grown man having a full on panic attack, due to what I suspect is PTSD, dealing with it after the best he can and then realize he needs help to get better, all while asking his best friend, another adult man, to help him deal better with this condition. I feel like this is rare in manga series, as well as literature in general, so it was refreshing to see (and painful, of course, but I am trying to focus more on other aspects ^^;). I cannot wait to see how this specific part of the story progresses, because I think it is really interesting.
Also, as mentioned, there are new characters introduced in the final chapters of this volume and one of them is little Marin, who is Fukumaru's sibling!!!, and I am so excited we are getting information on what kind of lives Fuku's sibling are having, I hope we get more!! And while Marin's introduction is not a happy one (I officially hate that woman), her story seems to take a turn for the better and that is great! While it shows a very true occurrence, that unfortunately, many pets are subjected to, she seems to have been steered to a better life and for that I am thankful.
I really enjoy this manga series and I cannot wait to find out more and see where the story goes from now on!

One of my Kobo Humble Bundle books and I just had to read this one, I could use something fun, chill. Though, given a few scenes, not always was this a chill manga, there are some sad moments with our MC to do with the death of his wife, how he cannot play on stage (or get anywhere near a stage). Thankfully, he has friends and a cute kitten to get him through things. I loved the scenes with our old man and his young kitten (either from his POV or the kitten's POV). The whole cherry operation and how our MC reacted made me laugh, sorry. I also loved getting the POV of other characters, though that other pianist can just go and fuck off, sorry again, but seriously that guy was so insensitive and rude. Bah.
I want more of this series!

Can't get enough of Fukumaru and Mr.Kanda. Can animals and humans heal the most tender and broken corners of each other's hearts? This precious duo shows us some of the ways that they absolutely can 💜

Cute 🥺 mostly episodic feeling with the hilarity of owning a cat, but I still enjoy the underlying plot of Mr. Kanda finding himself again after the tragedy of losing his wife.
