After narrowly surviving my debut into the magical world, I made a promise to myself: no more hiding in broom closets.

But with the Mages' Guild reorganizing faster than anyone thought possible, and naming me as their number one target, that promise seems a little far-fetched. Especially since my training with Callie and Dizzy, the highly experienced dual-mage pair, goes off like a cake in a cannon.

Left to find someone that can fill the role, it isn't until a formal dinner party goes horribly wrong that I find the best (and worst) solution imaginable: Reagan Somerset, the leather clad crazy woman who busted into my broom closet sanctuary in the first place.

Through an off-kilter teaching style and many punches in the face, I learn my true potential.

But with her happier busting heads and kicking in doors than staying put with a pupil in hiding, it isn't long before the world comes crashing down. The Guild has found me, and they intend to take me alive.

Okay, if I'm going to be brutally honest, there was only one reason I read this book, and it wasn't anything to do with the main character or her story arc. The reason is REAGAN (if you don't know who she is you MUST check out the fire and ice trilogy, set before this book). She is now my second favourite heroine following Kate Daniels and I just had to have some more of her after the end of her trilogy. Even though there aren't any chapters from her perspective, she still made reading the book tolerable.

Why does it need to be made tolerable you ask? I'll tell you. It's the main character, Penny. She is by far, one of the most irritating protagonists I've had the misfortune to read. I don't know if it's just me but from the first chapter, in her first book, she annoyed me. Yes, she suffers from typical chosen one snowflake syndrome, with special never seen before powers, plus everyone is drawn to her and thinks she's awesome, but that's not the problem. We've all dealt with that before in this genre and it's quite common. No, the real issue is that she behaves so much like a teenager, you actually forget she's in her mid twenties. Her mother is quite controlling and dominating, in a protective lioness kinda way, and this has supposedly caused Penny to become subservient and meek. Knowing that though doesn't make it any less cringe worthy to read when she constantly runs around acting childish, naive, indecisive, impulsive and weak. That's without even mentioning the ridiculous words she comes out with to avoid swearing. They are such utter twaddle and actively make me want to punch her. In fact I don't know how none of the other characters haven't by now, especially Reagan! I thought by the second book, after some experience she would have matured and evolved a bit. But nope! The only aspect of her that has developed is her magic, which has suddenly become the strongest and most awe inspiring magic in the world EVER because she is a snowflake and worth it. Heaven only knows what Emery sees in her, because I certainly don't. He loves that she is chaos incarnate, in fact he finds it outright adorable that she has an aptitude for putting herself into peril for no other reason than she wanted to. I mean despite the fact she's being hunted down and hasn't learnt control of her magic yet, she decides it's perfectly okay to leave the warded safe house, go into a dark cemetery known to be dangerous, just because she's curious! Argghh!

Anyway, now that we've established I really dislike Penny, I would say that the rest of the book is alright. Emery is a decent hero, albeit a little bit vanilla and often seems to play second fiddle to super Penny. We also get to see a bit more of some of the old favourites, including Darius, the dual mages, Red and no good Mikey, and of course, quite a significant amount of story time with Reagan. It's also the first book we actually have the shifters involved in any of the proper fighting. But even with these additions, the story was not hugely riveting for me. It mostly meandered through training Penny scenes and getting into fights with mages, that never really felt that exciting. I don't know if it's because Reagan's trilogy before this series was so much more of an interesting story, with a far more kickass heroine, but this series seems dull in comparison.

The writing itself was up to Breene's usual good standard, despite perhaps being a bit less imaginative. There with a few errors and repetitions here and there, but nothing severe enough to detract from the flow of the story, and it was a decent length of book. Overall though, I'd have to say I wouldn't really recommend reading this one, unless like me, and you're pining for a bit more Reagan in your life. And if you haven't read her trilogy, seriously, what are you waiting for? Go go go!!

The writing style KF Breene delivers is spot on with her writing style, her characters and the world she brings you into with her imagination. Well written with great characters.
The plot is amazing with action and strong characters.
You can not go wrong with this book at all.
It’s sexy funny and so much action best ever book and a great series.

"Clearly this is why Reagan and I work as a team. Because I don't know any better, and she's cracked."

I found the start slow but once Reagan arrives, the fun well and truly begins! I loved seeing her from someone else's perspective and her dynamic with Penny is so entertaining.

In fact, all of the characters are amazing. As usual, Penny (and her mother!) had me cracking up, and I was definitely excited to see more of some old characters.

Romance, humour, action, and lots and lots of magic. What's not to like?

Wow! This one ends with a clear path of book 3 being epic! The story was exciting, entertaining, and a great lead up to the finale! So glad I started reading Breene!

I love a read where there is action, drama, adventure, romance and comedy. This book has almost everything with the exception of heat. If you are looking for a sexy read this isn't it, but if you are looking for a great read pick it up!

At times I continued to feel the descriptive writing was lengthy and unnecessary which led to the 4 start rating....just FYI.

Happy reading,
DD 💕

Read these!

Sooo if you haven’t read this series yet I’m telling you to. This is technically book 5 even though the series is split into 3 and 3 but start at the beginning. The writing is great it reminds me of kate Daniels with the easy banter and vicious females and just all around good story telling. If you like vampires magic shifters blah blah blah then read these but also if you like action and humor and strong females that aren’t annoying and have their own issues but kick ass to...I really don’t want to read the next book because I hate when I finish a series I love (lately that hasn’t been the case with all the crap I’ve been reading) and I’m pretty sure most of you that haven’t picked this up yet ( I was late to this gem) will feel the same way.

Hilarious!

Adding Reagan back as more than a cameo is just brilliant. Penny and Reagan's dynamic make this book not only hilarious, but you want want to put it down. Can't wait to see what will happen next. So great that both The born in fire and Natural series are available on KU.

This book starts where the last book left off, bringing you more twists and turns and edge of your seat action. Penny is becoming more and more my favorite character in this series. She is learning her gifts more and more with the help of Reagan and Darius. And how to love and care with Emery by her side. I seriously can't wait for more.

I love KF Breene and I had never read her supernatural books before, only the romance ones. Let me tell you, this series is amazing! I want more, so, so, so much more!

This series had it all! Romance, humor, bonds and even a little witchcraft and some vamps! Who wouldn’t like it??

Fierce Magic!

I am absolutely addicted to this series. Whether Breene writes a female lead as dominant, fierce and in your face kick a$$, or timid, quiet, with a hidden strength of steel at her core, she nails it. I wasn’t sure if I would like Penny as much as Reagan, but she is becoming a force to be reckoned with in her own right. It reinforced that there is no ‘right’ way for a woman to show her strength, whether a ‘helpless damsel’, or a mouthy broad with a sword, there is strength inside us that can surprise even our own selves. I can not wait to read the conclusion of this series and see Penny come into her own as well as have questions answered between she and Emery!

This book moved quite a bit slower than the previous one in the series. It's a lot of Penny training. It picked up in the second half when she switched to training with Reagan, and I started to enjoy it a lot more.

Totally awesome

I love Penny and all the other characters in this book and this series. You have humor, action, adventure and so much more in this well written self-contained story. I’m so looking forward to reading the next book to see what else can happen.

I enjoyed this book but it seemed to lack purpose. It had a lot of action and more violence then I prefer.

Penny is likeable enough in parts, but as a MC she lacks shine of Reagan. Once Reagan was more in the picture and the Emery issue was resolved and they were reunited, it improved. There's plenty of action but I'm not sure where the larger focal point of the story is heading. Darius is infuriating in one scene, then disappears until the very end. I'm not as into the magic side of things but it's still a worthy series to invest in, mainly because of my interest in the original trilogy.

And what kind of love-nickname/endearment is "turdswallop"? I nominate it as the worst love nickname ever.

Not as good as the 1st

It was more of the filler episode with quite a few chapters unnecessarily prolonging the book. Lots of situations didn’t contribute to the story nor brought more enjoyment to the book. The girl was just too wimpy, trembling, fearful and clueless. Typical “chosen one” scenario with bumbling and fumbling heroine that was not very interesting, funny or smart.

Stronger heroine

I respect how Penny was able to continue without Emery. I actually think she dealt with the separation better than he did. She became stronger and faster once Reagan took over her training. I still can't believe Darius that it was a good idea to put Penny in such a life threatening training. Definitely over kill. I love the teaming up of these power couples as well. Its very exciting.

1.5 stars rounded up. Okay, my biggest beef is I just don't get Emery as a self-contained, actualized character. He doesn't appear to be very deep, and we only really get sketches of him despite getting POV (3rd person) chapters. Penny is better, with more nuance, though her weird "swearing" and other actions aren't nearly as funny as Emery seems to find them -- unless she's interacting with Reagan. To me, Reagan is the real star / powerhouse of this book (and even more so the next) despite it not being focused on her. It's exciting every time she shows up and she steals every scene she's in with her humor, unpredictability, and reckless confidence. I've felt I understood her better through Penny's eyes. And honestly, I'd rather read more about her and Darius's relationship from the outside than Penny and Emery's from the inside. Regarding other characters / forces, Veronica is basically a pointless non-entity slowly forgotten yet somehow still around (a real shame, actually), and the Guild is a faceless, empty shadow. It sure is hard to hold the high ground against such an enemy when you kill (often gruesomely) at least as many creatures as they (apparently) do off-screen, of course.

On top of this, everything happens to quickly. Penny apparently only needs a few days to get a decent handle (though this appears to teeter back and forth) on her magic and start fighting in battles with aplomb. The series weakness I mentioned in Reagan's series becomes painful here: we as readers don't have a strong grasp on the rules, hierarchies, mechanics, and consequences of magic, which impairs the effectiveness of the story.

And yet another amazing book from K.F. Breene Natural Mage is the follow on from Natural Witch in the Magical Mayhem series!! This brilliant read is full of magic and mayhem and you will find yourself laughing out loud. K.F is my go to author because she has such a natural talent for weaving a story that is so compelling that you never want to end. Who doesn’t love a paranormal story where all kinds of magical beings come together. With vampires and shifters, witches and mages and Reagan who has a wild side and enough sass and carefree attitude that you just love her and her ways.

Penny is in a fight for her life but first she must learn the tools of her trade and that is magic. As we see Penny and Reagan teaming up to prepare for a battle and fight for their lives against the Guild, fireworks explode and the fun begins

I highly recommend you grab this series and sit back and enjoy this wonderful ride. I can't wait for the next book in this series. This is more than a five star read.

Better than the first

Well, this book was quite an improvement on the first in the series. Additionally, it featured Reagan quite heavily but even so, this was the continuation of Penny’s story.

There was quite a bit of action in this second installment. I was a bit - just a bit - peeved on how Reagan was presented as so over the top. I get the author was trying to draw the contrast between Penny and Reagan but a slightly more subtle hand would have been better.

Most of the primary players are back for this book and it’s a turning point for Penny both in her magic and personal life. Although, have to admit, the pairing of Penny and Emery feels s bit forced somehow and doesn’t have the chemistry I usually like to see in romantic pairings.

My previous points are quite nit-picky and with an interesting and fast paced plot, this book earned four stars.

I’d say this was 2.5 stars. This was barely better than the first, but again the characters just aren’t doing it for me. Penny is the epitome of too-stupid-to-live characters. I would go so far & say she is the archetype of tstl characters. She is so frustrating because she is 24, but still acts 12. This poor girl has never met her backbone. The main reason this was slightly better than the last is because of Reagan’s large role. I mean she brought the humor & action, otherwise, it probably would have been on par with the last book. It’s odd because Reagan is the better main character, but she is a side character in this... so yeah pretty meh. If you couldn’t guess, I’m in it for Reagan.

Love the plot but..

This series is a reread. I love this storyline. But the character Penny being this all powerful being. And an adult at 24. But acts like shes 5. With her not swearing b.c her mom doesn't allow it and other behavior, and lets her mom and others around her dictate her life. Like who she can date. Who she can live with etc. To me her character is not cute to have an adult act like their a child or her frighten to easily, that she's constantly zapping ppl but yet she's lived in the human world. Went to school etc with this same power but it's never been a problem until now. Not realistic..

Natural Mage picks up about six months after the events of Natural Witch. Penny's been living and training with Callie and Dizzy despite the differences in their abilities and styles. With no contact from Emery except the occasional gift of a power stone, Penny's been in a state of emotional disarray. Not only is she missing her partner in (sometimes literal) crime, but she's just not feeling the same magical connection with Callie and Dizzy that she so easily had with Emery.

The plot takes us through these earlier steps of Penny's cohabitation with the dual-mages, and when the sh*t soon hits the fan. With Penny's magical potential, and her connection with Emery, the Guild can't let her slip away from them. Soon enough, it becomes clear that her skills just aren't progressing to a level that will help keep her safe and out of the Guild's clutches and influence.

I felt like the first half of the book went at a steady pace, but then it started to stagnate a bit. Natural Mage was in a bit of a slow, BAM, slow, BAM type of narration (real sophisticated description, right?). Slow progress, BIG MOMENT, slow progress, BIG MOMENT, rinse and repeat. For me, this type of pacing got a little bit tiring, but I still enjoyed the story as a whole. Overall, Natural Mage's plot line moves us easily into what feels like a natural third piece to the saga of Emery/Penny (and others) vs. the Guild and its corruption.

Additional note of importance: I'd never read any of K.F. Breene's other books before the Magical Mayhem series. Although I didn't feel like that mattered much when reading Natural Witch, I feel like I would have enjoyed Natural Mage more if I had read Reagan's trilogy first.

Penny and Emery are great as per usual. Along with introducing us to some new "curses", Penny definitely grows in her confidence and overall sass. I have to be honest, though, I think Reagan's winning me over, and I may be liking her more than Penny. The two women strike up a fun friendship built on a mutual respect, healthy fear (at least on Penny's part), and willingness to kick each other's butts. I really liked the camaraderie that the two ladies had, and I think they're a good balance for each other. It was refreshing to see Penny have someone else to rely on besides her mother and Emery, and I think it's going to be good for her mentally, magically, and emotionally to have a strong friend in her corner.

Reagan is sassy, violent, and powerful. In short, she's pretty awesome. Since I hadn't read her trilogy, I got to discover her "genetics" along with Emery and Penny, so it was an interesting surprise to find out who/what she really is. She makes me very curious because she's a rarity, and the other characters make it clear that a bond like hers and Darius's does not come along very often. I'm feeling pretty confident that I'll be diving into her books sooner rather than later.

Overall, Natural Mage was an enjoyable read. I can't say that it drove me crazy, but I think there was a lot of important character development and interaction, and the final chapters of the novel set up a strong direction for the rest of the series.

I just couldn’t do it. Couldn’t get invested. I ended skipping about half the book, reading the end, and then went back and read some other chunks I had skipped.
I love the characters but the second book didn’t draw me in like the first. Obviously there will be a third book. I’m hoping by then my interest in this series will be renewed.

Wow! A great book

I’m enjoying this series! The characters are fun and exciting. It would be great if we had more information on the guild as they are a somewhat mysterious enemy but we’ve not been introduced to any of them. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
