Blood Moon by Aubrey Law is the fifth book of the Revenge of the Witch series also known as the Black Annis series, so named for the MC. Revenge of the Witch is also accurate since the entire series revolves around and stems from the Witch Queen, Amelia, Black Annis' mother having sacrificed Annis' father, for his human blood. Clearly, Annis is a little resentful for Amelia's actions and has vowed to take out Amelia despite her supposed immortality.

When judging a sequence of books in a series, it is always difficult to judge just one book. I had the first five books in a boxed set, and I expected that I owned the entire series. This book ends with a cliffhanger, which is a tad, tiny, little bit of f@$%^& annoying when you invest sacred reading time in what you believe is a completed series. So, there's that. But as you can see, I hold no grudge when it comes to this series.

Here, Annis has completed one of the tasks she has vowed to complete and regrets the sacrifice of a magic item for the completion of the task. Amazingly, the natural end of the story initiates a new one that seems post-apocalyptic as vampires attempt to take over the earth as a Blood Moon falls on the earth.

Annis, Gretchen, and Skye move forward along with prior friends and enemies, monsters, angels, demons, various fae creatures, to live, love, laugh, crush, kill, destroy and all that good stuff. The battles are epic in nature, bloody and gory in actuality, with existential, apocalyptic, hanging in the balance possibilities. I enjoyed the series, but I would not recommend this novel as a standalone book. I really believe the build-up is a necessary element.

What I like about this book, is the sacrifice she's willing to make for her friends even tho she's a black witch.

‘I’ve suffered enough for many lifetimes’

Los Angeles author Aubrey Law is best known for her collection of stories – The Pumpkintown Perils –for the adult reader despite the witch’s stories and fol-de-rol that have a hefty dose of fantasy, imagination, some clever mystery solving, and a bit of naughty. Now she steps away from the pure entertainment aspect to continue her initial ‘serious sci-fi dark fantasy novel’. It is a pleasure to report that she succeeds as handsomely in this continuing series BLACK ANNIS as she captured imagination and hearts with her prior series.

Aubrey knows how to mix historic fiction/fantasy with contemporary consequences – and that is a trick that usually takes practice in time travel and mythology writing. This opus opens as follows: ‘Amelia, the wicked Witch Queen and the vile woman who’d given birth to me, was finally dead. She’d been sliced apart and shredded into bloody pieces by the Judas Dagger that I’d since traded to an angel in exchange for Gretchen’s life. I had no regrets about saving the little German werewolf but I would definitely miss the unique magical weapon that I’d given up for her. The Heavenly blade that was no longer mine had successfully killed the evil bitch who was once both my mother and worst enemy. May she rot in Hell for all eternity…’ And those are only the opening lines…

This being Book 5 of the BLACK ANNIS series many will wonder if the book can stand-alone. The answer, yes – but the series is so well constructed that starting with Book 1 is recommended for full enjoyment. This episode is well suggested in the synopsis: ‘A mysterious red moon begins turning thousands of people into vampires and awakening ancient monsters. Annis and Skye must discover the source of the Blood Moon and save the world from being ruled by creatures of darkness. But the price of salvation may require great sacrifice.’

Aubrey Law steps solidly into the court of dark fantasy with the usual humor we all have grown to love. This is another strong novel and a fine continuation of a fascinating series.

I’ve read several of Aubrey Law’s books over the years. Now, though, her Pumpkintown Perils series seems light years away from Black Annis as the author delves further into the realms of Dark Fantasy.
Black Annis Blood Moon (Revenge of the Witch 5) opens with a quote from Revelation 6:12: ‘The sun became as dark as black cloth, and the moon became as red as blood’. Annis is imagining how life may have been if the deck had not been so stacked against her from the moment she was born. Even as she and her two friends, and lovers, Gretchen (a werewolf) and Skye (a werebear) are happily soaking up the Santa Monica sunshine, Annis is bracing herself for this peaceful hiatus to end – which it inevitably does. A mysterious red moon appears and begins turning thousands of people into vampires and awakening ancient monsters. Indeed, by the end of the book, Annis’ worst nightmare is about to come true.
Aubrey Law lets her imagination roam free as humans and non-humans perish in ensuing, give no quarter, battles. The trio fight, not just to stay alive, but to save the world. But, as Annis arrives at the point of willingness to sacrifice herself to save her friends, we see the beginning of what may be redemption. I am not particularly a lover of this genre and, from my perspective, this is a hard book to read. Yet, you cannot help but admire the dark, detailed and wondrous world the author has created.
I received this book as an ARC and voluntarily reviewed it.

Great!

Ok...come on! Don’t leave me hanging!

I love this series (with my normal complaint that the books are too short). However, I want to keep reading! And the next two books aren’t available yet! Argh! :-)

Aubrey - you are a great writer. Your story sucks me in. I am so happy to have found this series!

That ending though!

Holy crapola, what a freaking ride! The monsters and creatures in this story, the love and friendship, the death and sacrifice. I didn't think it was possible to love Black Annis as much as I do now!

Another excellent entry into the Revenge of the Witch series full of humour action and all manner of monsters. Each entry into the series has
given us something new and given Annis a new layer of intrigue

The Revenge of the Witch series is a guilty pleasure of mine and reminds me strongly of the Bayonetta as well as Bloodrayne series in that it stars a super-incredibly badass overthetop witch in the service of Hell but also against people even worse than her. She and Skye are fun characters and they do a lot of dungeon delving to murder huge numbers of baddies. Here, the Earth is about to be taken over by vampires and our antiheroine has to make a sacrifice she never thought she'd have to make. If you've read the previous books and enjoyed their fun mix of sex, gore, irreverence, and action then you'll enjoy this.

The story is quite interesting and there are several scenes where you wonder what's going to happen. Annis has been so unstoppable and brutal in the previous books that it was nice to see her in a more vulnerable position. If there's one thing I hate, it's flawless characters, and Annis was in jeopardy long before this book. However, Aubrey Clark kept everything well balanced.

Can Annis face her worst nightmares to save the lives of her friends, and the world?
To save the world, Lucifer offers Annis a deal, if she wants to save the world and the bear she loves all she has to do is turn down the offer an Angel is bringing her.
The Angel appears and offers Annis a way out for her friends and the world, all she has to do is agree to make a sacrifice, become the one thing she despises more than anything. She just has to become a Vampire!

Strange ending

It doesn't make sense for her to change in the end. I couldn't comprehend why god would interfere
at all. I thought for sure she could be happy after she killed amelia.

One thing I was glad about was that Gmok was alive - I like him as a side character. In this novella, Annis is making some good allies. I got a copy in exchange for an honest review.
