I've really been enjoying this series, having consumed all three available library editions in the last month or so. And despite this being the weakest collection of the three, I still enjoyed spending time in this world with these characters. It's become quite clear Remender has a formula that he is repeating throughout this series. But hey, if it works, why not run with it. It's just that his formula is starting to wear ever so slightly thin here, with a protracted, somewhat boring opening, at least in my opinion anyway, taking a while to settle back into the ongoing deadly drama that initially hooked me into this series. That said, the good bits that make up the middle section of this book don't last anywhere near as long as they did on previous volumes. And it isn't so long before the final arc returns to the bland and uninspired action that is getting just a little bit stale. It doesn't help that it is probably the dumbest story arc of the entire series. Taking a character I rather liked and doing something wholly ridiculous and disappointing. That and Wes Craig's art seems noticeably weaker, sloppier here throughout the entire duration of these arcs. The art had absolutely been the highlight of this series for me, despite Remender turning in his best work I've read thus far, but this really looks like he was half assing it. Whether he was burnt out, or was busy working on other material with deadlines looming, I don't know. All I know is, this is some fairly sloppy and uninspired art, at least when compared to what came before.
All in all, still a solid enjoyable collection, but undoubtedly the weakest of the three. Hopefully everyone involved can find their mojo in time to end this series on a high, because if it all descends into a bland and disappointing affair, it would spoil one of the better indie series I've had the privilege of reading. Still worth a look though. 3.75/5

This is another huge volume, as violent as the previous ones. in some ways, more crazy, but in others less coherent and sometimes difficult to follow.

Whatever.

Onto the last book and let's have the series completed.

While this volume did have a slight lull I am still very much enjoying my time in this series.

I find that these things happen in comics, however long the run is, somewhere around the 3/4 mark there tends to be a dip in the action then right after that things ramp up again for the conclusion. So these feelings are normal in my opinion but the series as a whole has been extremely enjoyable and even this slower volume still had my full rapt attention. At this stage in comics in general we can start to have a lot of what feels like filler. While I think we got just a tad bit of that here, maybe 2 of the 13 issues in here felt like they were take it or leave it. Overall, I'm not mad at it.

As it goes with a long running comic or manga series, you get to this point and you run out of things to say that you haven't already said. In an effort to avoid redundancy I am just going to briefly say that everything we know and love about Deadly Class in the previous 2 deluxe volumes is found in abundance in this 3rd volume as well. We have the same amazing character development, lots of action, there is emotional drama and suspense, twists and the same parallels to normal teenaged life that is so fun to behold reading about these badass teens.

Only 1 more deluxe volume left! I am so eager to jump into it but I also know this is going to be a bitter sweet goodbye to these amazing characters.

Another stunning edition. Characters are...dealt with in preparation for the finale and sometimes in ways you wouldn't expect. I like that they aren't all friends all the time. Remender writes natural conflict between them and it feels "real". Friends can drift away from each and they can also grow stronger. Marcus has a plan, but it still isn't really revealed. It's not exactly the calm before the storm because dealing with some of the characters wasn't exactly calm. Sprinkle in the music discussion that has been prevalent through the book along with Remender working through some of his therapy through Marcus and you have the next chapter in this series.

I feel like this volume is a mixed bag. (Probably should have reread the rest first.)

This volume can be very confusing to follow, too many characters individual stories. Visually there can be way too much going on in a single page.
Some pages even have around 2 pages worth of extra text at the side with no additional art or they have small alternating panels of 2 or more simultaneous stories on a single section of a page.

It has some really great moments though.
The page where he’s checking the bedrooms is priceless. I wish they had spent less time on the depressing narration in favour of longer, deeper character moments.

Remender even manages to squeeze in a weird naked cult(starting to think he has a fetish)
This volume seems to be a mix of character building, shock moments, preaching about things, moaning about things, deaths… Oh and a random tripping sequence which didn’t really add anything other than an opportunity to do some nice artwork.

Its not really all working together that well though, it feels like a lot of it is unexplainable despite the amount of narrative text.
I’m hoping book 4 clears everything up.

Teen Age Riot
Deadly Class deluxe 3

Marcus and Maria are back at Kings Dominion and still have lots of shit to handle,  teenage stuff but also more intriges and backstabbing, no one can be trusted and this book is again so very action packed its insane. This remains one of my favorite titles and i will be sad to see this series end. Only one more deluxe after this one and then its over. The script from Remender is great as always here, as i still think this is his very best book, but Wes Craig here, man. He goes all out yet again, with some seriously great artwork that pops because of the coloring of Jordan Boyd, this book is so much fun people what are you waiting for ! Dead cults, a Yakuza family that wants to annihilate them all, a trip at a cabin in the Woods going totally wrong and still struggling with everything on a school for assassins, this book is stellar and just a joy to read.

Still a fantastic book. This is how a large cast of characters should be handled. All the subplots intersecting into a grand and great storyline.

A lot of satisfying conclusions in this volume, while the book is charging up for a big finale. And still the book delivers with surprise twists and turns (death cult). Yes, some of the intro pages of each issues are dragging a bit, but I don't mind at all, to get slow breaks between the action.

If you're reading the review to book three, you're probably already invested in the series as well, but if not: jump in!

This volume really put things into perspective for me. I tormented myself by trying to get through it. Forcing myself to read as I slowly sipped from my wine glass. Too many characters, and too many stories going on at the same time. Defeats any ability to attach yourself to any one singular character. Some pages simply had too much shit, literal shit, going on. Confusing during some arcs is an understatement. When a character gets killed, I can care less…when they miraculously come back, I care even way less. The only exciting moment was seeing titties swinging during a few pages of being introduced to some sex cult. Remender can’t shy away from telling us he’s into BDSM. But anyway, I’m more so upset I spent my time reading this while drinking an expensive Cabernet. Could have read something with a lot more depth. I can’t wait to finish this saga with book 4…not because I care what happens but because I can laugh at anyone that considers this to be good.

This was awful. Logic is thrown out of the window in first couple of issues, where characters died only when plot required them to die, rest were just running around bleeding heavily, knife in the chest, a bullet in the gut and all of them get miraculously healed up in 10 days. Reading Marcus' inner monologue turned from bearable to painful since book one, I just dont want to read that crap anymore.
I like Wes Craig's art, but in this book, in some places it was rushed, scratchy, and just doodle drawings. But whatever good points this book has those are because of Wes Craig. I can't believe after a such a promising 2nd book, it has turned in this way. My only hope is final book ends in a good way, even mediocre is fine at this point.

Grade: B+. It’s disappointing to me to see so much of Marcus’s character development was rolled back. He’d built a solid relationship with Maria; that’s destroyed. He’d started to get less depressed; that’s undone. He was out of Kings Dominion; he’s pulled back in – understandably, and I’m okay with it, but it’s part of a larger problem. Also, the cultists are really goofy. There must have been a way to make them feel just a bit more grounded.

Still, at least Remender commits to character death! We lose Helmut and Viktor in the final issue. This is all the more moving given Viktor’s partial redemption early in the volume. Saya’s escape from Kenji is also very cool, and it’s heartbreaking when she kills Quan, who broke her out in the first place.

What a fantastic read.

"Deadly Class" has become one of my (if not the) favourite comic book series. From the story to the art, once I start reading "Deadly Class" I cannot seem to stop. The whole narrative in Marcus' mind, the twists in the story, the suspense...

I will be so glad and so sad the series will end with the next Deluxe, but everything must have an end, so here's hoping it will be the best one ever.

This volume starts with some of the best action packed Deadly Class issues so far. Then unfortunately we're back with Marcus dwelling and sobbing and being depressed but luckily the volume picks up in the end with more mayhem.

I love Deadly Class for the great artwork, brutal action and murderous way of treating main characters but every now and then Remender takes the Marcus as alienated protagonist a bit too far.

I’m starting to get really, REALLY sick of Marcus. There’s a lot of self-reflection that doesn’t add much to the story for me, a lot weird fantasies and dreams that distract from what’s going on, and not enough time dedicated to developing other characters. Still, I’m interested enough in the story to keep going. I hope the next volume contains less self-aggrandizing teenage angst.

The drama and action in this is unreal. Kinda feels like classic xmen in the sense that its a brilliantly constructed action soap opera starring teenagers that can kill you. Very excited for volume 4.

This continues to be a phenomenal series. The twist and turns keep you reading, the character development is strong even as the number of characters continues to grow. This book takes you on a ride and is not afraid to break your heart. This collection ends on a brutal cliffhanger. Not sure if I can wait for the final hardcover to come out. I may have to pick up the remaining issues digitally to see how this ends.

After all the years, this is still my favorite series by Remender.
