I go back and forth on how I feel about Boaz, because he caused a whole lot of heartache for a certain necromancer, but Grier ultimately ended up where she needed to be with who needed to be with. So...okay. I didn't love how Boaz handled things, but I was pleased with how everything ended up.

That said, our boy Boaz had a more than a few issues he needed to deal with. While I completely understand why he'd be willing to do what he did when he proposed to Addie (because his sister WAS worth it even though she might not have believed it at the time), the guy is a hot mess. Full stop. He's just a hot, sexy, hunky mess. Who happens to be smart enough to pick up on the things Addie was trying to hide. As you might imagine, that made things a wee bit difficult for poor Addie.

Which isn't to say Addie can't hold her own, but those secrets Addie's been keeping? The fact they're secrets is part of what keeps her safe. It also means that she can offer Boaz the very thing he needs to keep his own sister safe. You know, this is starting to get complicated and...let's just say both Boaz and Addie have their reasons for getting engaged and they're both willing to see things through.

I might not have liked all Boaz's actions in regards to Grier, but he's growing on me with his reasoning and actions here. And I REALLY like Addie and her willingness to do what needs to be done to keep those around her safe. Also, I LOVE being in this dangerous world. More please.

Didn’t work for me

This idea has merit but it would have taken a lot more effort than was put into it. The first thing it needed was a refresher course in how A&Bs relationship evolved in the original books. Would have been a good idea to start the books later in the timeline. Their relationship was well done and real as it existed. This characters personality was not believable as Boaz at this point in the series, feels continuity error. The storyline didn’t make sense at the end either but I can’t explain it without spoilers. This actually made me think worse of him not better.

Meh

I don't really know about redemption. Boaz is just Boaz. I liked Eddie ok, but she has always struck me as too timid, which I would never expect from a bounty hunter, but there it is. Cass got really old really fast. The whole sexual harassment thing was tired, not charming.

I was kind of disappointed with this book. It says that it is supposed to be read between books 2 and 3, but honestly, I think it would be better read AFTER the third book. Why? Well, even though timewise, things are happening in the time between the books, it doesn't really make sense. I spent the first half of the book not really understanding what was going on. I mean, I KNEW what was being said, but the REASONS and the HOW were the things that didn't make sense (Like who the heck was Adelaide and where in the world did she come from?) When you read the third book and get to find out what is happening with the rest of the crew during this time, things begin to fall into place.

Other than that, it never really felt REAL. I can't really explain some of the things that bothered me because that would entail spoilers, and truly, the explanations of the HOW do not occur until almost the end of the third book. See...annoying.....

Regardless, this book was a major step down in my enjoyment of the series. I was already not liking Boaz and this book cemented that. Now, I TRULY despise him. Maybe I'll change my view going forward....who knows?

Another thing - since I'm going about this totally backwards and read the POA series first- I did not understand ANY of the dynamics that were occurring in that series when Hailey's family comes to Atlanta for the coronation. I actually went and found the correct book (it was book 4 in the Potentate of Atlanta series- Proof of Life) where we got to meet everyone. I went back and reread it to see what I had missed before. Not only did I understand a lot more, but it gave me a couple of peeks into what to expect in the future. A spoiler? Yep...pretty much (but I just had to know....)

So, as of now, consider me COMPLETELY Team Linus.

The author notes these events occurred between How to Claim an Undead Soul (book 2) and How to Break an Undead Heart (book 3). If you haven't yet started Beginner's Guide to Necromancy or started book 3, I would recommend reading this as BGtN #2.5 instead of #10 - it might better fit into the storyline, I think.

I went into this without knowing what the blurb said/would say and, based solely on the title, I expected it to redeem Boaz. I wouldn't say it did that, for me, but it did give fans of the series a peek into who Adelaide (Addie) is/was before Boaz' proposal, why they both agreed to it/get out of it and his attitude going into the marriage. I really like Addie, especially after having had some glimpses of her relationship with Hadley in Edwards' The Potentate of Atlanta spin-off. This just reaffirmed my feelings for her yet didn't really change my feelings for Boaz.

It was ok, but I would have preferred it ending on Boaz coming clean about Grier and us getting to see how Addie handled that.

I'm sure that's the bait for the next book.

Boaz Pritchard was one of those characters that I was never overly fond of and then he did what he did to Grier and I loathed him. However, reading this book has reduced my hatred somewhat, but I still don't like him. I admire his actions and what he feels he needs to do for the sake of his sister, but I still don't like the fact that he was never honest with Grier and even in this book isn't totally honest with Addie either. When's he going to grow up and man up a bit?

I loved seeing a side to Addie that we hadn't met before and her relationship with Cass was fun too. I did like the little mystery into the serial killer as a side story too. Hope we get to read more about Cass in the future books, but as those are not Addie's stories, maybe we won't. (Idea for a spin off maybe....)

A short story, 2.5 in The Beginner’s Guide to Necromancy urban fantasy series set in an alternate world usually revolves around Grier Woolworth in Savannah, Georgia. The focus in “The Redemption of Boaz Pritchard” is on Adelaide Whitaker and Boaz. But not in Savannah.

My Take
Edwards roused my curiosity with Cassandra’s appearance, and her friendship with Addie is so full of snark and sexual overtones. I’m not sure if I’m appalled or laughing. Sometimes it’s both.

Hmm, the action starts with the libidinous Ron Turner. It seems baby vampires really can’t keep it in their pants.

It is interesting to learn Adelaide’s history and how her family made such use of her. I can understand it, but geez. Her predicament certainly makes it a useful campaign for Boaz. And Addie has heard that Boaz’s experience means she can just lie there. Yes, Edwards uses first person protagonist point-of-view from Addie’s perspective — and I wish I’d read this in proper order in the series. No, it isn’t necessary. It’s just my obsessiveness with chronological order. Oy.

Now we get a firsthand look at this next sacrifice she’s making for her family. A family that is at the upper end of Low Society. One that will cease to exist. Mingled with loss is Addie’s thoughts on Boaz and her increasing feelings.

I can understand Addie’s assessment of her situation and Boaz’s. It’s incredibly sad and another loss for Addie.

What we learn of Boaz’s feelings is interesting, but pragmatic. Not what I would have expected of him. For one thing, he’s thinking seriously about his past behavior. About the karma catching up with him, assessing his situation and Addie’s as well as his relationship with Grier.

Cassandra’s past is the clue to her behavior today. I do love that she has embraced her self and has joy in her life. Addie's thoughts on Cass’ (and vampires in general) need and cluelessness to express friendship are definite food for thought. And I wonder how it expresses itself on vampires in general. As for Cass’ joys . . . crack me up. She loves everything vampire in the entertainment aspect of life, even with the betrayals in her past.

Edwards continues to reinforce the commercial focus of Society with its emphasis on moneymaking through making vampires. A cold, heartless group that doesn’t value anyone, and rarely family.

“The Redemption of Boaz Pritchard” is primarily of Adelaide’s thoughts but includes a good bit of action as she and Cass pursue their fugitive. Sometimes with Boaz’s help.

Thankfully, Cass’ humor balances out the sadness of Addie’s life while Addie tries to balance her not being a good person (in her own eyes) and not being caught.

Honey has a funny insight about this matriarchal Society with that quip about women doing all the serving. Hmph, “manners like a human”.

And it turns out that Addie isn’t the only one sacrificing herself.

The Story
The Whitakers are sinking fast and Boaz Pritchard could be the family’s lifeline — provided Adelaide Whitaker is willing to give up so much.

It should feel like a beginning, but why does it feel like the end?

The Characters
Adelaide “Addie” Whitaker is now Matron Whitaker as the eldest surviving daughter since her mother died three months ago. Dad is an alcoholic drowning his sorrow and leaving his daughter to struggle on alone. Hadley is the younger sister who died.

Cassandra “Cass” Desmond, a bounty hunter, is the vampy vampire who is Addie’s partner. Javier is the master of Cass’ clan. “Mina Harker” is one of Cass’ aliases. Sydney Delacorte had been Cass’ first master. Serena had been Cass’ girlfriend back when she had still been human.

Low Society, Boaz Pritchard, Grier Woolworth’s neighbor and love, is an Elite sentinel for the Society who is based in Savannah. And he’s desperate to save his sister, Amelie. Wilhelmina is Boaz’s motorcycle. Mom is Matron Pritchard. Dad is oblivious.

The Society for Post-Life Management is . . .
. . . a group of magic-users split into High and Low Society, which employs sentinels as their enforcement. Other sentinels include Abernathy, Parker, Jessica “Honey” Honeywell, and Mark Chambers. Cleaners are like the forensic crew in that they clean up a crime scene — before the humans show up. The Undead Coalition of vampires is part of this Society.

Vampire members of Clan Willis include Angelo Willis who paid for Ron Turner to be turned. Jaden had been one of Ron’s lovers. Demaryius Willis is the clan master. Ari is his mate. Gertie is one half of a vampire couple. Jack and Arlo, a healer, are more members.

Jean Patel, of Clan Patel, is not a vampire Boaz wants to deal with.

Twyla Thorn is a human child adopted by a vampire couple. It’s a popular and pragmatic practice, fulfilling several goals. Belle Francis is another human adoptee and a friend of Twyla’s.

Gustav, a warg, is a licensed bounty broker. Hecate is the goddess worshipped by the Society. Frank is a human Cass had bitten during sex. Mary Sue is the Oracle, an expensive information broker. Ms Nunez is a teacher at the local high school. Odette Lecomte is a famous seer.

The Cover and Title
The cover doesn’t really make sense. Oh, the blackness of the background of this narrow street lined by buildings on each side reflects the darkness of the story, but how it relates to the story? I don’t know. In the foreground is a golden blade of a wood-handled dagger topped by a silver skull, silver dog tags hanging from the hilt. The embossed gold title is where the dagger’s point is buried in the street. Below that is an info blurb and then the author’s name below that; both are in white.

The title is an exploration of Adelaide’s and Boaz’s thoughts on their upcoming alliance, “The Redemption of Boaz Pritchard”.

I have to be honest, I was a little underwhelmed with this. While Boaz was in this, the main focus of this story seemed to be Addie and Cass. I had hoped for much more Boaz and Addie.

I continue to enjoy the off shoot books in The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy series more than the actual series!

As I read the original series, I wanted to slap Boaz upside the head. However, even at the time, 2 things were clear to me. 1) Boaz was never intended to be Grier's soulmate. 2) Boaz was *not* a bad guy, he was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

This book cleared up a few things (very few things) that confused me from the first series, but I never felt like they were important. I think that is why I delayed reading this book for so long. Sad for me - this book is fantastic.

Addie is a delightful character. The relationship between Boaz and Addie is sweet and kind. Cass is outrageous and reminded me of a certain Gwylgi. The mystery was interesting.

Two things bugged me about this book. 1) Amelie's abuse by her mother was not addressed and should have been. So, either Ms. Edwards added this aspect of her life after this book was written (and I don't think so!) or Boaz was just clueless and that does not seem to be his personality type. and 2) the big question of Grier was avoided.

Still - loved the book. It was amazing.

Boaz is a character that I initially liked, then moved to hate, so I wasn't sure about this one. Not sure if I cared if he redeemed himself. I did find myself liking his attitude about the marriage to Addie, how he intended for it to be real between them and how he didn't judge her. By the end of the book about the best I can say is that I don't hate him any more, I'm more indifferent. The one thing that surprised me was how much I liked Addie and how practical she was about things. I'd love to see more with her and if it comes with Boaz...well at this point that is ok and the price I'd be willing to pay.

I want more! I am so lucky that I am part of the author's newsletter and she gave us all a chance to read the book for free before it goes out in the stores!

This was good! A large part of the plot was dedicated to introducing Boaz's fiance (and the other woman in the author's other series) and I loved it and her!

brief summ : Addie is a bounty hunter trying to make ends meet and figured that agreeing to marry Boaz would solve a lot of her family's problems....

I would totally want to read other stories centered on them.

I see you, Boaz.

Listen, I'm one of them that really carried a chip on my shoulder for Boaz for a long time. Crude nicknames were involved.

Ok... I might be warming up to him. Lol. Love Adelaide and Cass, too.

This was my first Hailey Edwards book, and while this book was clearly part of a series, I had no trouble following along. If anything, it made me want to check out what I have missed, and read more in the series. I feel like this was a great way to check out the series and get a taste for the rest. I found the characters intriguing, and look forward to finding out more about them.

Don’t read before book 3!!

I saw this warning and was glad I listened because it’s more happening at the same time as book 3 and it’s spoils something big for book 3. (Spoilers for book 3 below if you haven’t read it please scroll on)

Ok I did like the plot of this one on its own. It was exciting and intriguing. I liked cass and Addie as new characters too, they were interesting and fully rounded, I felt sorry for addie and what she’s been through. I even sympathised a little with boaz and what he’s trying to do for his family but there’s no redemption for what he did to Grier. Showing him feeling bad over it does not redeem him in anyway, there’s no excuse for not being honest with her and honestly that bombshell at the end of book 3 broke my heart and I do not forgive him

A quick book looking at the early stages of Boaz and Addies relationship. It slips between book 2 & 3 of the necromancy books. When the book starts they are already engaged, but don’t really know each other. Both are heading into this marriage to save others.

It was great to see these different POV’s, both Addie and Boaz’s. I loved seeing that Boaz had really changed, he saw that his old lifestyle wouldn’t cut it any more, that he needed to be a grown up, you could see he was making an effort to be a better person. And I love that Addie is not some genteel society matron. I would like to see more from their POV.... please

An Unconventional Love Story!

Boaz what he did to Grier was Unforgivable.... I am totally in lve with Linus but i wanted to jump in the pages and slap Boaz!

Even in this story i feel he is slowly giving his heart away while Grier is at home Pining for him!!! And for his sister who nearly killed the girl he cares for.....

I think his sister deserved what she got, and shouldn't accept him giving his life away for her mistakes.... Still i did like Addie alot i loved the story between them and if there wasn't so much background it would be better reveiw!

Why is this 2.5? Like 2 was about boaz and Grier together and going on dates... Now suddenly we have Addie. This doesn't make sense at all.

I don't even know where to start.

Firstly, I read a little of this on KU and was completely confused. The first two sentences of the synopsis is a giant spoiler for book 3, but I didn't expect this entirely new story to be happening from the jump as though it was a different series. So after reading a couple chapters, I hopped over to listen to How to Break an Undead Heart. After a couple hours of that, I was...not happy.

I see from the release dates that this is a retcon, hence being titled after his redemption. At this point in the series I'm not feeling the redemption very much.

This review originally appeared on my book blog, Flora's Musings.

A Fascinating Story of Loyalty, Duty, and Assassination.

I’m a huge fan of Hailey’s Beginners’ Guide To Necromancy series. It has firmly cemented Hailey Edwards as one of my favourite authors. I love her writing style and find her stories easy to listen to. Her plots keep me listening as they’re full of interesting threads and plenty of action. The world that she’s created is fascinating as are the different species that populate it. I love that all her characters have multilayered personalities even though most of them aren’t human – it makes them all feel real.

Sofia Willingham is a new-to-me narrator.
I enjoyed Sofia’s performance. The pace at which she read the story felt just right, and the emotion she puts into the narrative adds further depth. Sofia is able to adjust her voice slightly when reading the dialogue, it made it easy to distinguish male from female characters.

Although Adelade Whittaker is only in her early 20s, the weight of duty on her young shoulders, makes her feel older.
I already liked Addie from meeting her in the Beginners’ Guide to Necromancy series. But I’m so glad we got to know her better. Addie has all the personality traits that I love in a female protagonist; she’s resilient, courageous, puts others first, and has a great dry sense of humour. While we’re talking about fabulous female characters, I have to say how much I love Addie’s vampire bestie, Cass. Her inappropriate sexual behaviour and outrageous humour were hilarious. Every scene Cassandra was in was golden and she quickly became one of my favourite characters.

Boaz Pritchard was not my favourite person from the Beginners’ Guide to Necromancy.
However, I’m glad that Hailey wrote this story – Boaz needed redeeming! Boaz is intelligent and an accomplished warrior. However, he’s also a long-term lady’s man with all the unappealing traits that come with being a manwhore. Thankfully, in this book, we learn that there’s more to him than that. I like the man that Boaz becomes around Addie.

The Redemption of Boaz Pritchard is an unconventional love story.
I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. I loved the new characters we met and learning more about those I already knew. My fingers are crossed that Hailey intends to write more stories starring Addie, Boaz, and Cass.

...😑

This short side story should show readers what Boaz was up to while away from Grier, after the Amelie/Ambrose scandal.
As the title suggests, it was meant to make Boaz more palatable to still have around, but for me it failed miserably.

For once, the supposed redemption consists just of a couple of scenes in which Boaz tries to be a decent human being with Adelaide, his official not so secret fiancé, while having inner crocodile tears thinking about his unsuspecting girlfriend - Grier. And it is quite the self-pity party, rather than him showing regret, feeling like scumbag for lying to her.

The focus is more on letting us know who Adelaide is, and while it was quite nice to discover her having such an unexpected job and friend - Cass was the highlight of the story and I'd be really tempted to read more about her- everything feels quite disconnected from the main storyline: many pieces don't clic.
Adelaide and Boaz's agreement is supposedly based on the Whitaker good family name and the chance to use Hadley's identity.
But Adelaide says more than once that their reputation took a dive with her sister's death and her father's alcoholism, she also reiterate how rundown the mansion is.
So? How can Amelie impersonate Hadley if the Society knows Hadley's dead? How can a family that is heavily gossiped about be the key to redeem the Pritchard's name? Not considering that Addie is going to take the Pritchard's name, and Whitaker is going to end with her...

Also, there's no closure.
We're not told how did they come to know about each other situation and meet to make the wedding contract.
In the main series Adelaide introduces herself to Grier because she knows of her past relationship with Boaz, that means he finally told her, but, despite him repeatedly thinking about it here, we are no witness to this important passage - and his only real chance at redemption.

On the bright side, this is not going to ruin any rereading of a beloved series, and I'm really glad I was able to read it for free (it was first serialized on the author's blog, and then offered as a free download for 1 week) because Boaz it's not worth of my money!

I enjoyed books 1 and 2 in this series, but this 2.5 book fell flat.

The description makes it sound like it will show you the romance or at least the getting there portion of Addie and Boaz, but what the book is actually about is 98% action crime and other people stuff, with only about 2% ever having any interactions between Addie and Boaz. And those interactions are quite generic and shallow.

It's very confusing at the start because you wonder wtf is going on and why Boaz is here and what is he doing. I even checked multiple times to see if this book really was supposed to be 2.5 instead of later down the line, because it was such a weird unexplained situation. It becomes clearer as you keep reading, but to be honest, I wasn't happy with it. I really liked Boaz and liked him for Grier, and could not really overcome the feeling of Addie as the 'other woman'. Bleh.

This book would be a 4 star probably if it were advertised as an adventure hunting some mystery killer, or getting to know Addie and Cass. But it was advertised as being about Addie and Boaz together, and there was about 2% of face time for them in the book.

I also thought that them caring about each other was very strange, given that, again, they barely ever had any conversation deeper than "Where are you?". What is there to care about? You don't even know each other.

These books and this whole series is hard for me to rate. Are they well written? Yes. Do I enjoy the characters - no. Boaz is just… yuck.

This story, I guess, is supposed to be read when I read it, after book 2, but feels like it is filled with spoilers for book 3. Here’s hoping I didn’t just make a mistake. Speaking of mistakes, when I started this story I thought I accidentally clicked on the wrong audio book. Who are these people? Why do I care about some random girls named Addie and Cass? Why do I care about bounty hunters not even in the same state as Grier? Well, I guess off “camera” Boaz tried to save his family by proposing to a girl who has an even worse off family (but good name). Addie and Boaz are essentially an arranged marriage, that Boaz stresses is him turning himself honest, while all the while I lying to Grier? Weird weird weird.

There are definitely some choices made in this story that made me incredibly uncomfortable. Cass is taking advantage of people, assuming she can “convert” straight people, kissing people who don’t want a kiss, etc. etc. etc. It got real tired real fast. I was able to root for her to survive at the end, but it was a struggle. I guess the point of this story is to make Boaz’s betrayal less painful, but I found it extra painful to go through this knowing Grier doesn’t even know what he did. He is terrible.

You think you know a character, and then Hailey Edwards shows you how wrong you were.  Well, in Boaz's case we already knew how he was, here we see he is at least trying, but Addie was a surprise.  I like the way the character's are presented, they are fun and entertaining, but at the same time they are real and relatable.  Cass is a new character that I already love, and I'm hoping to see more of her.

For those who have read The Beginners Guide to Necromancy series, you need to know this book takes place between How to Claim an Undead Soul and How to Break an Undead Heart.  We hated Boaz there, but at least now we get to see his point of view, it wasn't as easy for him as I first imagined, but I liked to see him more as a person and not only the guy who broke Grier's heart.  But Addie and Cass are the ones that really matter here, because they were a delightful surprise.  For those who have read TBGTN series, or the spin-off PoA series, we already know that Addie is no pushover and that she is Boaz match, but here we get to see just how perfectly badass she really is.

This is the book I didn't know I needed to read, but that I love.  It looks like it's a stand-alone, but I really wish we could read more about Addie's and Cass' adventures, even more about Boaz and his work.

Outstanding Urban Fantasy!

Written by Hailey Edwards
Narrated by Sofia Willingham

Finally, Boaz and Addie’s story! I liked both characters in “The Beginners Guide to Necromancy” series but he didn’t always come across in a good light. In this story, he redeems himself and earns some respect. I knew Addie was a strong woman but she finally shines in this story. We also get to find out what a kickass she can be. I loved Kass and Addie’s friendship but I don’t know if I would want Kass as a friend. She’s a bit scary and overly handsy.

Overall this was an excellent story from the narrative to the storyline line. It was fast-paced and upbeat. I enjoyed it immensely and highly recommend it to others.

A start to redemption

This book is a peak into Boaz’s world but follows his betrothed more than him. While Boaz is a heart breaker in the BGTN series with Grier it seems he’s finally met his match in this book.

To understand the context of some of the emotional struggles Boaz has, you should read most of the Beginners Guide to Necromancy series and then this one and move on to his sisters mini series of the PoA books. I read all of the BGTN and PoA books (that have been published so far) and while I don’t love Boaz, this is a good start for him and makes his actions more understandable.

A bonus story out of The Beginner's Guide to Necromancy series focusing on Boaz and Addie. I read most of this when Hailey Edwards was releasing it chapter by chapter on her website, but was happy to buy a copy and support her when she published the story (it is available for purchase and also in the Kindle Unlimited library). I liked what was here, wish it would have been more, but I'll just have to hope she writes more from their POVs- there is so much more that could be told from Boaz's perspective that could go a long way to actually redeeming Boaz in the eyes on many fans of the TBGTN series.

Must read

I didn’t read this when it was released by chapters because I figured I’m not a glutton for punishment, there’s no way I could read a chapter and not want more. Well I was definitely right! Once I picked it up I couldn’t put it down. I feel for Boaz in a way I haven’t yet in any of the TBGTN books, it was a breathe of fresh air to see him as a real person just struggling to make the best in this world for the people he loves the most. I love that I have read other series enough to know that at least Boaz’s biggest wants/needs have been gloriously met!! Now it’s time for Boaz to experience for himself and not those around him.
