A rip-roaring picture book adventure from superstar pairing Malorie Blackman and Dapo Adeola.Over the shimmering ocean, up the huge, high mountain, through the deep, dark forest . . . WE'RE GOING TO FIND THE MONSTER!Join two intrepid adventurers as their imaginations transform their house into a wild wonderland - and their big brother becomes a mighty monster. A joy to read-aloud with its cumulative refrain, and full of funny, relatable characters, this is a contemporary celebration of creativity, fantasy and family.Written by bestselling author of Noughts & Crosses, Malorie Blackman, this story was originally published as Marty Monster. This new version has been stunningly brought to life by the award-winning illustrator of Look Up!, Dapo Adeola.
In what sees a glorious partnership between Blackman and Adeola, this picturebook sees Charlie and Eddie playing in the garden until their father calls them in with a particular quest: go wake the monster upstairs. Fired up with an imagination that would make Shirley (Come Away From The Water, Shirley) proud, the real environment becomes enveloped in an imaginary one as they climb mountains and traverse oceans until they finally arrive at the monster's lair: there's nothing worse than being sent to wake up a teenager!
So much playfulness here with strong riffs on the Bear Hunt book but none of that detracts from the delightful prose and Dapo's characterisation. Extremely refreshing to meet a character with vitiligo too - which is never mentioned in the story but a few sentences draw attention to the condition on the endpaper.
Such a good book, it was really interesting to see the world almost through the children’s eyes as we get to live vicariously through their imagination. As they imagine this whole world, which turns out to be an exaggeration of their real world on a larger scale.
I really enjoyed seeing the main protagonist as a young black girl who has vitiligo. I was really happy to see that The Vitiligo Society supported Malorie Blackman and Dali Adeola in creating this book, alongside providing a link for reading to learn more about the condition to help educate children who may have never heard of vitiligo previously.
Wonderful to be able to puzzle out different elements of this story as you're reading, what is the monster, and where are they really? And then to have the answers to those questions revealed in the second half of the book before it ends in such a heartwarming way. Wonderful language and alliteration for children to enjoy throughout. One of the two protagonists has vitiligo, and the fact that this is represented without being mentioned in the story is really powerful. I thought it would allow those with the condition to see themselves represented without it becoming their defining characteristic or something they felt pressure to explain.
With the dream team of Malorie Blackman and Dapo Adeola as author/illustrator you would expect this picture book to be worthy of the accolade 'future classic' and I'm happy to say that We're Going To Find The Monster definitely is. A warm, family orientated story that takes us on a journey of the imagination with two young black protagonists , one of whom has vitiligo (a skin condition that causes white patches ) . The condition isn't even mentioned in the story but it is wonderful to see illustrations that are so inclusive and so charming , the book would be a great 'mirror' for any young children that have vitiligo. The story is amusing and even made me laugh out loud at one point , you ng children would love the repetition of all of the events that have happened as we go in search of the monster. I can't wait to read this one to my 17 month old granddaughter, I'm sure she will love it as much as I do.
This is fun and imaginative book will surely give the little one's idea to redecorate their home as a fun jungle adventure. Also pulls in kids with siblings playing together can having imaginations as a family. A great book for a 1st grader, they will be amused with the narrative, and there were plenty of opportunity for the kids to act out their parts such as climbing, sneaking, and roaring like the animals as in the book. It is definitely a great read aloud book!
"Over the shimmering ocean, up the huge, high mountain, through the deep, dark jungle, we're going to find the monster. But who IS the mysterious monster that these heroes are hunting?"
A story about imagination and all before breakfast time. It is nice to see diversity in the illustrations.
his book is about siblings going on a hunt for a monster. The book uses many describing words and includes a child with vitiligo from Barbados. Also includes representation
I read this to my little sister and then asked her how many stars she'd give it and said if it was one-star or five etc and she said 'mon-star' so I guess that translates to five? The book definitely got to her. Really considering making her a GR account lol
Cute picture book. In Sep 2024 copies of this book were delivered to all infant schools in Southend-on-Sea as part of Jacqson Diego Story Emporium's "Book Elves" initiative.
This book is a fairly-tale inspired read, about three siblings who decide to go on an adventure before breakfast. This story is great for encouraging curiosity and being imaginative. The illustrations fit very well with the story and are vibrant and action packed. You can make a story out of the illustration with how much detail were put into them.
